Another AQ plotter bites the dust

posted at 8:20 am on November 22, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The Pakistanis may not like the Predator attacks in the lawless frontier territories, but the US continues to prove their effectiveness.  They scored a big hit this morning when a drone-launched missile killed Rashid Rauf, the al-Qaeda plotter behind the failed 2006 transatlantic bombing attack.  The bombing also killed another wanted senior AQ figure:

The alleged Al-Qaeda mastermind of a 2006 transatlantic airplane bombing plot was killed in a US missile attack in northwest Pakistan early Saturday, officials said.

Rashid Rauf died when a missile hit a tribesman’s house in the village of Alikhel, part of a border district known as a stronghold for Al-Qaeda and the Taliban militants.

Also among the five killed in the early morning incident was Egyptian Abu Zubair al-Misri, another wanted Al-Qaeda operative, a senior Pakistani security official said on condition of anonymity.

“The transatlantic bombing plot alleged mastermind Rashid Rauf was killed along with an Egyptian Al-Qaeda operative in the US missile strike in North Waziristan early Saturday,” a senior security official told AFP.

Pakistan can complain all it wants, but in Rauf’s case, they have no one to blame but themselves.  They had Rauf in custody after the plot unraveled in 2006 but refused to extradite him.  Instead, Rauf escaped in December 2007, and most people presumed he went back to the terrorist camps — a presumption that found confirmation today.

The Telegraph has an interesting thumbnail history of Rauf.  His career started with murdering his uncle and transformed itself into high treason in a short period of time.  Rauf apparently masterminded the “liquid bomb” scenario that now forces travelers to limit fluids to 3.5 ounces in carry-on luggage.  He had every intention on killing people, especially his fellow Brits, in large numbers, as part of his efforts for al-Qaeda.

The speed and accuracy of the missile attacks over the last few months has been rather breathtaking.  The US has found some excellent intelligence sources in the FATA, which has to have AQ leadership wondering which day will be their last.  Pakistan continues to object, although some wonder how seriously, but the US has to keep playing out this string as long as possible.  At some point, those cowards in the caves will have to start purging their organizations to eliminate the potential leaks, and that’s when the best opportunities will appear.

And yet some liberal judge would want him released in the USA if we had captured him, because his home country would not be safe for him to return to, to plot more mayhem. Great work for our Pakistani allies. I hope this fiend is enjoying his 72 raisins.

Bush should be given credit for the extraordinary muscle he has flexed in helping lead our military to a victory. Just watch, Mr. (I was against the war from the beginning) Obama, will take credit for this once he get in office.

My biggest concern is what he will do to the military if he follows through on his campaign promises. It is the Commander In Chiefs job to keep American safe. If he strips down our amazing military might in order to satisfy the Code Pink types, we will be in for a turbulent four years.

59 days and counting…….

right4life on November 22, 2008 at 9:15 AM

Obama made a lot of promises he now knows he can’t keep. That’s the way presidents get elected, unfortunately. However, I don’t think he’s stupid enough to try and outguess our military officers as far as threats to our security are concerned. He is going to have to live in DC, after all, in a house that’s already been a target once. He wants it safe.

You are absolutely right. Bush should be given credit for just about every success we have had in the War on Terror over the past 7 years.

From January through September 2008 alone, his Administration conducted 18 cross-border missle strikes into Pakistan. (In 2006 and 2007 combined, there were only 10.) An October missle strike killed Khalid Habib, who had been the #4 ranking member in al Qaeda and responsible for planning attacks in Pakistan and overseas. Several other high-ranking al Qaeda personnel have been taken out this past year, too many to name here. It is getting hard to keep up with the body count. Of course, the MSM has given this only a passing mention, with no cumulative tallies.

Everyone, when you give thanks next Thursday, thank the Lord for President Bush’s resolve and for the Predator drone. Only the Lord knows just how many lives may have been saved by their actions just this past year.

OneVision on November 22, 2008 at 9:33 AM

The Pakistani complain about the strikes into their territory but I think that’s for the local folks. Nobody wants al-Qaeda living in their back yard.

He escaped or they turned him loose? Tracking him back to the Rat Hole, who else did he lead our Intellgence to? I get that our Government gets together, and packages a story for Public Consumption. If Pakistanis and the US could count on this “Tool” leading them to a geographic place of interst? They might just have helped him escape, and followed him…geeze what if they had some high tech tracking device, they used he wasn’t aware of…I should write spy novels- or stop reading them:)

hippie_chucker on November 22, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Obama doesn’t have the stomach to do the tough things Bush has done to fight Islamic terrorism but he will continue the practice of using predator drones to kill terrorists.

Democrats don’t object to killing terrorists per se. They naively think the war can be won without risking American lives to do so.

Basilsbest on November 22, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Pretty amazing what our intel people can do when they aren’t hamstrung with the ridiculous rules that President (please kick our ass) Carter imposed. But get ready to be disappointed again when President (a hug will cure the world, and kick our ass too) Obama nueters our intel aparatus again.

These hits have a cumulative effect. The big thing for terrorists on the lam is that they need support for food, shelter, etc. More hits equals fewer supporters. Eventually the terrorists have nowhere to hide.

Great job, US!!

jcheney on November 22, 2008 at 9:04 AM

Agree, which is why it is very important not to lose “control of the narrative” (I am not sure of the right way to put it and that sounds a bit Orwellian).

What needs to start now, is education, truth telling, presentation of facts, repeated over and over again to counter the expected onslaught of falsehoods. This transition period and perhaps the first few months are an opportunity to set the ground rules which will not come again. One may have to get creative about it, given the Obamatron media and the fact that they have invested too much into Obama to allow him to fail, much less to be criticised, so it should be gloves off for everyone now.

saint on November 22, 2008 at 3:52 PM

saint:

Agreed. To me, the first facts that needs to be communicated are that we have an extraordinary military (all volunteer), fighting an extraordinary war after an attack on our soil, by heroic American men and women, lead by brilliant military leaders under opposition by freedom-haters in our own country and ultimately that after a difficult decision, our Commander in Chief who’s main reason for doing what he did was to get the bad guys and protect us.

Thank you George Bush and the American Military.
