Owning a gun a disqualification in Obama administration

posted at 9:18 am on November 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

If a job application included a question about religion, especially for a government position, First Amendment advocates would rightly go ballistic.  The ire of Second Amendment activists is easily understood, then, arising from the questionnaire prospective Obama administration employees must complete.  The 59th question demands to know whether the applicant or anyone in his/her family owns a firearm, a sign of the hostility we expected to see towards gun owners from Barack Obama:

But even some Democrats and transition experts are baffled by the inclusion of the question.

Tucked in at the end of the questionnaire and listed under “Miscellaneous,” it reads: “Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.” …

It’s just one question on a lengthy personnel form — No. 59 on a 63-question list — but the furor over the query is a vivid reminder of the intensity of support for Second Amendment rights and signals the scrutiny Obama is likely to receive from the ever-vigilant gun lobby.

Obama’s transition team declined to go into detail on why they included the question, suggesting only that it was done to ensure potential appointees were in line with gun laws.

Oh, I get it.  Rather than just ask the traditional question about prior convictions, Team Obama wants to proactively ensure that their applicants don’t break laws.  Will we see questions like this?

  • Do you have children?  Please list proof that you haven’t beat or molested them.
  • Do you have pets?  Please list proof that you have them spayed or neutered.
  • Do you have alcoholic beverages in your house?  Please list proof that you’re not an alcoholic.
  • Do you have satellite television service?  Please list proof that you don’t buy pay-per-view porno or professional wrestling.

No, of course not, nor should we … well, perhaps except for the professional wrestling question, but we’ll work on that later.  Team Obama isn’t interested in enforcing gun laws through job applications.  They don’t want gun owners working in the administration, and they’re screening for that right up front.

Gun ownership is a constitutional right.  Employment discrimination on that basis should be illegal.  It certainly should be exposed so that we can get a sense of how the man who will swear to protect and defend the Constitution plans on doing either for the entire Constitution.

Will a religious test come next in the Obama vetting process?

And of course this stuff is like home movie night for GOPers…

benny shakar on November 21, 2008 at 3:44 PM

GOPers? Next time turn the sound up on that vid. Last time I checked, Hillary Clinton wasn’t a member of the GOP.

But I’m sure she’s glad to know she has the tweaker burnout demographic in her corner.

What I have loved so far about this blog is that there are many people willing to take part in an intelligent discourse instead of merely parroting party lines. Keep up the high spirits!

Shocking, isn’t it! Conservatives are almost like real people that think! Perhaps you could add to the growing body of research on means for understanding these strange and wonderful creatures!

Sheesh. It never ceases to amaze me how many liberals insist on treating their ideological opponents like cartoon characters. If I weren’t personally acquainted with enough of them that have, by force of actual interaction, learned not to I’d become convinced that it was some sort of trait imbued upon registration.

I suppose I should be grateful that this one is at least moderately civil and keeping the deliberate snark to the minimum, unlike his fellow travelers.

Indeed; a wise sage once opined, “Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?”

benny shakar on November 21, 2008 at 7:48 PM

Betcha that’s not the same wise sage who once spoke of traveling to 57 states, is it?

soundingboard on November 21, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Yes, I own a gun.

And 22 more guns.

Guess I’m not gonna get hired by Obama.

pseudonominus on November 21, 2008 at 10:24 AM

I don’t have a gun, so I have to ask those who do (according to the above quote):

Are guns like potato chips–once you get one, you have to have more of ‘em?

ProudPalinFan on November 21, 2008 at 8:33 PM

… and people are surprised that guns are “flying” off the shelves of gun stores?

Yeah, Obama believes in the second amendment. At least his interpretation of the 2nd amendment as conferring the right on the states to have militias. Private citizens? Not so much.

Personally weighing the question now, more guns or more ammo?

As I stated it was just a way to say there are other reasons. And no, if someone wants to defend the 2nd, it doesn’t mean he wants to change it.
It could also mean, as I also stated, that when someone tries to nail him on gun control, he can say “No, I don’t own one, but my Vice President does and 63% of whom I have hired do, so I don’t have a problem”. There are many reasons.
And screw the Latin, it is childish…

Wow! It’ll get no coverage in the news too.

From what I understand, although I do not own one, yes.

They are fascinating little devices, come with a wide variety of options, and are relatively inexpensive (although you can spend as much as you want.)

A hobbyist finds pleasure in things others find useless. If you have a gun for purely practical reasons (hunting or personal protection) you need one or few. If you take an interest in the weapons as a group, there is a nearly infinite variety to keep you busy.

Will a religious test come next in the Obama vetting process?

Yes, in order to require either Baal or Molech worship. Both required child sacrifice.

abcurtis on November 22, 2008 at 8:21 AM

Once an uppity woman (environmetal type) asked a bunch of us engineers why we had more than one kind of gun. I answered that it was necessary to have a firearm suitable for the target. I told her that a .22 was suitable for small children and a larger caliber gun like a .44 would be needed for larger men. I pointed to my 240 lb cubicle neighbor sitting across the lunch table when I said it. She never again spoke to me the whole ten years I worked for that company, which is exactly what I wanted.

When someone asks me if I like children, I usually answer by saying, “Yeah, I like my children.” That usually sends them on their way, and I get left alone.

Pelayo on November 22, 2008 at 9:16 AM

I haven’t read all of these comments, so forgive me if I echo someone.

I don’t see this as Obama not wanting any gun owners working for him. I see this as a CYA, making sure the media cannot scrutinize. I understand it. He’s working his propaganda machine.

Now that I’ve read many of these comments….
Umm…I think there’s some ODS going on. wow

Ed, why would he “protect and defend” a document that he believes is a “blindspot” in the vision of the founders?

Yes, in order to require either Baal or Molech worship. Both required child sacrifice.

labrat on November 22, 2008 at 8:23 PM

Incredible. This poor sick Republic has become hopelessly perverted when it discriminates against those exercising their Constitutional rights. Hang it up . . . the “United States of America” is no more.

rplat on November 23, 2008 at 9:42 AM

Ha. I’ll bet Obama doesn’t want people near him to have guns.

Obama wants to violate the 2nd Amendment rights of anyone who applies with his Administration for a job.
The handwriting is on the wall folks and NO court without power of contempt, such as the Supreme Court, can save us…. we will have to save ourselves.

nelsonknows on November 24, 2008 at 4:51 AM

Don’t forget, Obama stated “The First and Second Amendments became obsolete soon after they were ratified.”

nelsonknows on November 24, 2008 at 4:53 AM

There’s only one reason The One’s administration would bother putting this on the application: they intend to take aggressive measures to curtail firearm ownership/use in the U.S.

mondonico on November 24, 2008 at 12:49 PM

If I were about to lead this country, and perhaps the entire world, into the greatest depression history has ever seen, I wouldn’t want anyone around me to own a gun either.

TrickyDick on November 24, 2008 at 1:48 PM

And it starts. Going out to bury my guns behind the wood shed.
