Obamamania Watch: Elementary, my dear Barack

posted at 4:35 pm on November 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

We regularly name schools after presidents in the US.  Public schools with names like Washington, Lincoln, Kennedy, Roosevelt and Jefferson can be found in every corner of the nation.  Usually, though, we name these schools after presidents have served at least a day in office:

It was only a matter of time. A New York school has been renamed in honor of President-elect Barack Obama.

The former Ludlum Elementary School, in Long Island’s Hempstead Union Free School District, was renamed at a school board meeting Thursday — effective immediately.

School officials say most of the 440 students there are black or Hispanic, and Obama’s victory is a source of great pride.

It was only a matter of time? Well, how about at least one full term in office?  He hasn’t even showed up for his first day on the job and already people are naming schools after him.

Did anyone name a school after Richard Nixon in November 1968?  If they had, they would have been pretty embarrassed to have that name by August 1974, wouldn’t they?   Hopefully Obama’s administration won’t end that way, but maybe school boards ought to wait and find out first.

I found some very interesting results when analyzing the MSNBC exit polling. I didn’t do a state by state search, since MS-DNC appears to have scrubbed some of the results, but I was shocked to see that in 2 battleground states, Florida and Ohio, O’bama won a huge percentage of the high school dropout vote-70 percent to McCain’s 30 percent.

That’s 10 points higher than Al Gore in 2000; Al got 59%. In 2004, the two candidates got nearly equal percentages.

School officials say most of the 440 students there are black or Hispanic, and Obama’s victory is a source of great pride.

It’s a public school and the indoctrination now begins outside the building. Fairly soon I expect all institutions of learning to be called Obama Centers. As for a source of great pride, they wold be better off concentrating on reading and math. Have you seen this year’s SAT scores?

I was driving home from work when I heard this on the radio. I live in the town next to Hempstead. Trust me when I tell you that you would need to wear a kevlar vest to go visit this school. I guess the village is looking for some other type of notoriety other than the gang-bangers, murderers and drug dealers in the neighborhood.

Hillary is no longer my Senator and a school named after The One all in the same day!

What can Long Island expect next?

lorien1973 on November 21, 2008 at 4:57 PM

Don’t you get it? Obama WILL be a great president. To suggest otherwise is racist. You think the press was in the tank before the election, wait until after he assumes office. They will do all they can to support the Obama presidency because in their hearts they believe that if the first black president is a failure in office, it will set back the cause of race relations in this country. Thus he WILL succeed. Any failures will be ignored or blamed on the Bush administration. It won’t matter if the economy tanks further under Obama’s watch, Obama brought HOPE which is better than a healthy IRA. Or something like that ..

If you don’t believe me, refer to the history of the New Deal to see how economic failure can be rewritten as economic success with the right p.r. Seventy-five years after that fact and the country still thinks that FDR and the New Deal got us out of the great Depresssion, when all he did was make the depression, “Great”.

Shelby Steele makes the point that Obama achieved greatness simply by being the 1st black President — it’s all about race — and that since he probably doesn’t even have core values of his own, is unlikely to achieve anything else.

Consequently, he’s probably already achieved the greatest thing he’ll ever achieve, and it’s probably appropriate to name things after him on that basis alone.

Let’s hope that’s true. My own sense is that there may be achievements in his administration that correspond to the sort of notoriety gained by Neville Chamberlain, or possibly corresponding to the notoriety gained by Fidel Castro.
