New Hillary twist: She can’t make up her mind on State; Update: Yes, finally

All the more reason to demand her appointment. With the sole exception of the ‘Cuda, she’s the only inexhaustible supply of blogworthy drama on the political landscape. Four years of Hot Air content hang in the balance. She must accept.
And if you believe Politico and WaPo, that’s exactly what she’ll do. Why? For that, we turn to the NYT:
One friend said Mrs. Clinton decided late Wednesday to say no, reasoning that she would have more freedom in the Senate. By midday Thursday, the friend said, she was “back in the indecisive column again.” By the end of the day, another associate said she could accept by Friday…
[D]riving her consideration, friends said, is a sense of disenchantment with the Senate, where despite her stature she remains low in the ranks of seniority that governs the body. She was particularly upset, they said, at the reception she felt she received when she returned from the campaign after collecting 18 million votes and almost becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party.
“Her experience in the Senate with some of her colleagues has not been the easiest time for her,” said one longtime friend who insisted on anonymity in exchange for sharing Mrs. Clinton’s sentiments. “She’s still a very junior senator. She doesn’t have a committee. And she’s had some disappointing times with her colleagues.”
In particular, the friend said, Mrs. Clinton was upset when the leadership rejected the possibility of her heading a special new task force with a staff and a mandate to develop legislation expanding health care coverage.
Yeah, I think this is the grand hole in the conventional wisdom that the Senate has more to offer her than does carrying water for The One. Because she’s such an outsized national figure, we tend to assume that that translates into outsized influence legislatively. Tain’t so. If it was, they wouldn’t be straining to come up with symbolic honors for her that carry little real power. If she got to play quarterback on the health-care bill she’d probably stay, but Teddy’s decided he’s going to play quarterback. In which case, whom would you rather take a handoff from — Kennedy, as just one member of a larger team, or the president, to command the entire country’s foreign policy? In fact, I wonder if there’s not something deliberate going on in freezing her out from more influential Senate positions. All the same concerns about her overshadowing Obama or otherwise complicating his job in the cabinet are also true vis-a-vis Senators more senior to her. If you’re a committee chairman with her on the bench, why not stave her off and hope that it makes her more inclined to get vacuumed up into the cabinet? She’s Obama’s problem now, not Teddy’s.
The real question is what she does once she leaves State, which she’ll inevitably do before The One’s time in office ends. Run for governor of New York? Replace Billy Jeff as chairman of the Clinton Global Initiative? Accept formal investiture as feminist pope?
Update: The drama ends — for the time being. No shady Guardian scoop this time; the Times claims she’ll accept. Good luck, Barry.
“She’s ready,” said the confidant. Mrs. Clinton was reassured after talking again with Mr. Obama because their first meeting in Chicago last week “was so general,” the confidant said. The purpose of the follow-up talk, he added, was not to extract particular concessions but “just getting comfortable” with the idea of working together.
A second Clinton associate confirmed that her camp believes they have a done deal. Senior Obama advisers said Friday morning that the offer had not been formally accepted and no announcement will be made until after Thanksgiving. But they said they were convinced that the nascent alliance was now ready to be sealed.
What does “just getting comfortable” mean?

Good news: she’ll do less damage to our health care system as Secretary of State than in the Senate.
Bad news: what foreign policy experience? This is Berry telling Foggy bottom that they have the run of the place (and are on their own).
Fox should give Bolton his own show–he’ll have plenty of material.

The Dems sure seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket. If the Obama presidency is a failure, who will pick up the pieces?

I don’t know … she never did anything about health care during her time in the Senate, so far. Frankly, I can’t think of anything she’s done in the Senate, except sit.

So, when’s her first trip to Tuzla?

Hillary has brains, is tough, and understands diplomacy and foreign relations. I actually think this is a good pick.
We were not going to get Bolton, just like we’re not going to get Romney in Treasury, so we should be happy when we get someone who is competent and can do the job. Compare this pick to say Holder as AG or Gorelick in Treasury. We should be happy when we can, because we’re not going to see much good in bambi’s administration.

Based on what evidence?
Again, whatever would lead you to make these assumptions about Shrillary? What can you point to that proves that she knows anything about diplomacy or foreign relations? Just one or two little examples or reasons would suffice. And kissing Arafat’s wife doesn’t count.

You forget what happened when the Clintons cleared out (of) the White House. When Shrillary leaves the Senate, there probably won’t be any desks or chairs left. Her long suffering Senate seat is not going to get any rest :)

Oopps….There’s nothing left.
samhill on November 21, 2008 at 3:57 PM
Hillary will take whatever she can get.
Akzed on November 21, 2008 at 3:57 PM
I’m in your minority too. Lots of conservatives were probably running scared when Obama said he wanted to sit down with Ahmanutjob and invade Pakistan to get Bin Laden, and Hillary called both of these ideas “dangerous and naive” during the primaries. Hillary as Secretary of State will probably restrain Obama’s nuttier and ultra-pacifist foreign-policy instincts, and she will probably ensure that Ahmanutjob never gets the chance to eat Obama’s lunch in person, while he finishes his waffle. No, she doesn’t have foreign-policy experience, but she will be well-coached by somebody who does–BJ Clinton.
Another advantage (for Republicans) to having her at the State Department rather than in the Senate is that she won’t have time to push Hillarycare through Congress to be signed by President Obama.
Obama might think that he’s getting an advantage by “keeping his enemies close”, but this will probably backfire on Obama. If Obama goes through with his campaign promises, he will wreck the economy (unless the GOP retakes Congress in 2010) so that 2012 will make 1980 look good. If Hillary avoids any major foreign-policy blunders, she can run in 2012, claiming that she did well on foreign policy and protected Obama from himself, while Obama messed up the economy where she had no role. The danger for Hillary is that EgoBama might decide to do it his way and fire her.
Rudy for Senate 2010 !!!

joey24007 on November 21, 2008 at 4:00 PM
Someone I know well had a job interview for a Senate staff position. Out of all the Senators (he/she) was specifically told they were never to speak to Sen. Clinton even to just say hello while passing by. I’ve also had that corroborated by a police officer friend on a security detail for her. He was asked not even to look at her. Both are extremely credible sources.
What a strange woman. New Yorkers will not miss her.
diogenes on November 21, 2008 at 4:00 PM
Richardson at Commerce and Hillary at State. Heh. Given the way Bubba reacted to Richardson’s endorsement of Obama during the primaries, and the overload of Clintonistas now in the administration, Richardson may want to look for a soft place to land.

My feelings about this appointment have nothing to do with Senator Clinton’s suitability under ordinary circumstances. At present, we need a person in that position who has a wealth of experience dealing with foreign heads of state and making decisions “in the room” that could have real-world consequences.
I can’t believe I am saying this but… why wasn’t Bill Clinton on the short list?

Clintons never resign. No amount of humiliation or threats or anything can pry a Clinton away from a political office – except a better political office. Clintons are the undead of politics.

This is an insane selection. Makes no sense other than rewarding Clinton’s supporters for helping him in his campaign and/or keeping Hillary inside the tent so that she can be watched. Paraphrasing LBJ: Pissing out instead of pissing in.

Pretty much everyone did.
Her husband’s policies (which are a huge part of her “experience”) brought us a level of terrorism and terrorist threat never before seen. She was all for those policies, as far as I can tell.
Again, who didn’t? BHO voted for the FISA bill, but that didn’t give me any comfort.
Okay. This is sensible. But what does it have to do with diplomacy or foreign relations?
I’m not sure what this means. I don’t know too many people who are against going after the Taliban, at least in words. BHO, again, said that he would hit the tribal areas without any regard for what the Pakistani government says. I happen to agree with him on this, but I know that he’s just lying.
I don’t know. You could have picked up Joe Shmoe off the street and find that he had better, more sensible, views about these issues than Shrillary. Color me unimpressed. Sorry.
I agree with you on this – anyone else he picked would have been at least as bad as Shrillary, but that’s a different argument than saying that she is actually qualified, in any way, to carry US foreign policy. But, we have come to a point where people believe that there is no such thing as a specific skill set for a position.
All I can say about this coming government is: Peter Principle Cubed.

With all the Clinton people in cabinet posts and Hillary as Secretary of State, this will be the third Bill Clinton term.
Bill will be working the phones to all the people he gave a start to in his first 2 administrations and now working in the Obama administration and will effectively become the closet President.
But I will not believe it until I see Obama officially announce Hillary as the SOS. I still think Obama is doing a Clinton on the Clintons.

Sorry for the tardy reply, I’ve just been sniping today, not reading comments first as I usually do.
ANYWAY, I’ve been considering that very deeply since her name for SoS was first floated, and the only thing I have been able to come up with is:
That she and Soros have formed a partnership. With his money, expertise and contacts, her advance knowledge of 0bama’s intent, and Bill as their international bagman, there is NO limit to how much money they can make, no limit to the number of governments they can destroy or alter to their own profit.
If she really does take the SoS job, Hillary has pretty obviously given up on seeking domestic political power, so the only reasonable conclusion is that she is going for the money. And perhaps the opportunity to torpedo 0bama at the same time.
