Video: The Lonely Guy
posted at 9:15 am on November 20, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Perhaps the definition of “lame duck” is that stage when people can stop being nice to you. The Left has gotten a big laugh out of George Bush’s treatment at the G-20. Rick Sanchez chalks it up to Bush’s “bullying” presence on the world stage:
In the video, one can see Bush talking with a few of the other G-20 leaders as he walks to his spot on the dais for the publicity photos, but not shaking hands. It doesn’t look as if Bush offers his hand, either, but also gives the impression of a snub.
If so, it’s incredibly petty on their parts. Bush represents the US, not just himself, and that reflects on their attitudes towards us as a whole. I’ll give Angela Merkel a pass on this, after Bush’s odd neck rub in 2006, but the rest of them have little excuse.
And a couple of notes to Rick Sanchez. First, I’m 45 years old and we didn’t say “cooties” in high school 30 years ago. Maybe we said it in elementary school. Also, I googled Sanchez and idiot together, and I got over 500,000 hits. What exactly does that prove?

To those here who blame Pres. Bush for everything including the election of Barack Obama, F-you. Conditions beyond his control led to the election results.
Pres. Bush came into the office as a cocky spoiled son of an ex-pres. September 11 changed him forever. We will never know what kind of president he would have been because that day changed everything. In the early days and months, he was still fairly cocky but the difficulties of war and the burden of the office sobered him up. Reality bites as they say.
When Pres. Bush landed on that carrier, his approval ratings were sky high. People love a winner. The turning point for him and for the war came when the Democrats, realizing that his popularity spelled disaster for them, began sniping about the war, treatment of prisoners and whining that we were in another Vietnam. All this within a year to fourteen months in. Pres. Bush needed their support and they did everything they could to cut him off at the knees, including disparaging our own troops as murderers, rapists, mercenaries. You name it.
So, Pres. Bush didn’t veto a single bill until the last two years of his presidency. Well, thanks to the sniveling cowards in Congress, including those in his own party, he had to whore himself to get the support he needed for OUR troops on the battlefield. He may not have always made the right decisions, but there was never any doubt about who he supported and who he wanted to win in this war.
In the beginning of his presidency, his attempt at bipartisan cooperation led to the No Child Left Behind Act, written by Ted Kennedy. Laura Bush, a librarian and educator, no doubt had a lot to do with Pres. Bush’s desire to do something to fix the problems liberals have created in the education system. By all accounts, this act has not been successful, but again, the educators whined and fought it at every turn. Why, because they were now accountable for the results they were getting in the classroom, when all they want is a ton more money to fund their “progressive and innovative” education experiments with our children.
Pres. Bush has been an honorable man. Maybe not the best man for the job. Maybe unprepared for the realities of a complex world. Maybe too controlled by people more interested in their own careers than in serving this country to the best of their abilities. Maybe too naive and too loyal to those who were given jobs because of their support, but were not competent. But, he has always been gracious. He has done what he felt was right to protect this country. He did not sell it to China, nor sell out our allies.
Pres. Obama is entering office with a similar attitude. He believes the media hype and will come in thinking that he will change the world. But, the world will change him. We don’t know what he will face or what events will shape his presidency. What we do know is that we are all in this together. We all succeed or fail together. President Bush will leave office with little love of the people, both at home and abroad. So be it. But there is a higher power that knows his heart, and that judge will be more forgiving than those judging him so harshly now.
I pray that God will bless him. He deserves his rest. This generation will never understand the enormous sacrifices he has made on their behalf, nor will they appreciate the safety he afforded them after the greatest attack this country ever faced from a foreign enemy.

Oh good grief. I get so sick and tired of the creating news out of thin air.
It was Bush’s summit. He met each one of them as they arrived had a photo op with each one of them then took them into a private chat. You notice that not all of them on the stage shoke the hands of all those coming onto the stage, probably because they only shoke the hands of those they had not yet had the chance to exchange personal greetings.
This entire group was assembled then they took their places on the platform for the photo op.

Bush inherited a difficult mess from a President who was more concerned with being popular than effective leadership. I don’t think there is any question that popularity has not been the driving force for the Bush Presidency.
It is a national disgrace the way the left has behaved toward this President. Many instances where they should have put country first, or taken the high road, were instead turned into embarrassing displays of disloyalty to our country and infantile disrespect for our highest office.
I like and respect President Bush. He kept his counsel during times of great difficulty and dignified the Presidency with class. He kept his eye on the ball and tried to avert both an economic disaster and a post 9/11 security disaster rather than play politics. The Democratic Congress and complicit media will have Karma to deal with. There is no question they betrayed our country.
eaglesdontflock on November 20, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Anyone want to bet when Obama does something the “world leaders” dislike and they diss him, the Left will be whining about how racist, how disrespectful, how mean they all are?
And it’s rather funny how the Left seems to think the world is going to “like” Obama – they will as long as he is willing to denigrate this country – when/if he actually puts America first he will be just as unpopular as Pres BushOf course they’re still hoping he will be a push over.

They should all be kissing his a$$. If it were not for his resolve Afghanistan would be ruled by the Taliban, where Al Qaeda would have training bases all over the country.

If I were Pres Bush I would wait for them to raise their hands for a greeting.

After looking at it a couple of times I think perhaps it is being misinterpreted.
Perhaps Bush already greeted each one before this parade on stage happened (as they came in the room – he was the host) and did not seem it necessary to greet them each again.
The other leaders had not met each other publicly at this photo op and Bush already did as they came in the room.
No need to shake their hands twice.

Right on. The Democrats have their share of putting our country where it is, especially since they gave our enemies so much extra strength to continue the fight by oposing everything Bush has done, just like they did to Nixon in Vietnam. I wonder how many many more of our soldiers and marines have died in Iraq and Afghanistan because of the transfusion of strength the enemies received from the Democrats.

What a bunch of BS!
This is another myth we haven’t challenged strongly enough. The LEFTISTS of the world hate Bush. And yes, most of them hate America too.
The world is just like this country. There are those on the right and the left. The left ALWAYS makes more noise because they are boorish, rude, hate-filled zealots. The media focuses on them and not the normal working people who have no time to “protest”. The media template is that the world hates Bush.
Talk to a few people who have immigrated here legally. The world loves America and a whole bunch of them love President Bush!

Amen. I’ve been trying to compose something that eloquent over the past several days, and Jvette took the words right out of my heart.
I only disagree with one point he made: that Bush will leave office with LITTLE love. I for one think he will leave office with a LOT OF love by more people than care to admit it. I am one of them. I’ve always loved George and always will. He’s a fine man, and one of honor. I may have not agreed with every decision he’s made, but that kind of relationship never exists in reality.
Knowing the honor this man holds in his heart, I could have almost felt it breaking the day B.H.O. leaked their “private” talk. Bush’s aide was correct to suggest it would be wise for Barry to keep “close counsel.” I wonder if Barry even knows the meaning of that.

He ‘talks’ to one guy. The name is Gordon Brown. Brown doesn’t even unclasp his hands.
It is a sign of respect when somebody reaches out to shake the greater man’s hand. It is a sign of friendship when the greater man extends his hand for shaking. Neither happened hear.
In fact right when he left Brown’s line of sight and met Merkel’s he snapped his head down so fast it could of came right off.
All of this is indicitive of one thing, the meeting he had with the other leaders went so bad that it caused him to hate all the rest, and that’s pretty powerful stuff that your missing here. Also intersting to note is that all the western powers were in the top row, where as China and the Muslim guy were standing right next to Bush, seems like his advanced planning staff were snubbed out of the advance planning part.

Now where did I put my Troll-B-Gone?
I won’t address this to b.s. (Hey! Great choice of initials there, benny!) since he’s really not worth the effort, but I agree with the kudos for President Bush. The man’s made mistakes, but most of them had to do with trying to get along with the b.s. types who hated him no matter what he did.
Good presidents are the ones who get hated. As bad as Carter was — and he was probably the worst of the 20th century — he was never hated like Bush has been.
Good presidents are also the ones who get lied about the most. For the last 8 years, we’ve had the spectacle of watching President Bush be called a liar repeatedly by the biggest bunch of liars in existence. That’s why he’s going to be remembered as a much better president than people realize. His current low approval rating is primarily a product of smears and lies, and the truth will eventually come out.
I remember we used to talk about the left-wing bias of the media, and we would periodically get lectures from them about how they prided themselves on being neutral and impartial, and agonized about how they avoided the appearance of bias. I think they’ve given up even pretending any more.
