Video: The Lonely Guy

posted at 9:15 am on November 20, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Perhaps the definition of “lame duck” is that stage when people can stop being nice to you. The Left has gotten a big laugh out of George Bush’s treatment at the G-20. Rick Sanchez chalks it up to Bush’s “bullying” presence on the world stage:

In the video, one can see Bush talking with a few of the other G-20 leaders as he walks to his spot on the dais for the publicity photos, but not shaking hands. It doesn’t look as if Bush offers his hand, either, but also gives the impression of a snub.

If so, it’s incredibly petty on their parts. Bush represents the US, not just himself, and that reflects on their attitudes towards us as a whole. I’ll give Angela Merkel a pass on this, after Bush’s odd neck rub in 2006, but the rest of them have little excuse.

And a couple of notes to Rick Sanchez. First, I’m 45 years old and we didn’t say “cooties” in high school 30 years ago. Maybe we said it in elementary school. Also, I googled Sanchez and idiot together, and I got over 500,000 hits. What exactly does that prove?

Pathetic.

SlimyBill on November 20, 2008 at 9:20 AM

How foolish, most of the time he has met with them privately. He has no need to “glad hand” them.
You could pull up any number of clips from other presidents doing the same.
They just walk on stage, that’s all just walk on stage for the photo op.
Scraping the bottom of the barrel…in the next few days every leader will be shown doing this.

right2bright on November 20, 2008 at 9:20 AM

He even got turned down by the EU President, who is an empty suit who couldn’t even get elected in Portugal.

NYT Headline: “Morrissey Distances Himself from Cooties

Jazz Shaw on November 20, 2008 at 9:23 AM

It actually looked to me like it was a mutual snubbing. He showed no interest whatsoever in shaking any of their hands, only met the eyes of two of them (briefly), and was visibly crowding the person in front of him as he tried to hurry and get the photo op over with. If they don’t need him anymore, he needs them even less.

aero on November 20, 2008 at 9:24 AM

Cooties was definitely elementary school, when we didn’t want anything to do with girls. By high school we wanted to do anything with girls.

Hey world, we voted your guy in as president, show us some love back.

AlexB on November 20, 2008 at 9:30 AM

When I see idiots like Sanchez, I remember that Bush is way above this type of ridicule. He kept his head high and did the job of President.

We now have a trainee who is still trying to figure out the job description.

I watched it twice and don’t see the snub. Bush never offered his hand. The whole thing looked weird. They should have offered it too, but he didn’t turn to them, so they didn’t have the prompt to extend the hand. I think really, Sanchez, go this backwards. Bush snubbed them.

Desperado why don’t you come to your senses,
you’ve been out ridin’ fences
for so long now.

Oh, you’re a hard one, but I know that you got your reasons,
these things that are pleasin’ you can hurt you somehow.

Don’t you draw the queen of diamonds, boy,
she’ll beat you if she’s able,
you know the queen of hearts is always your best bet.

Now it seems to me some fine things have been laid upon your table,
but you only want the ones that you can’t get.

Desperado, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger,
your pain an’ your hunger
they’re drivin’ me home.

An’ freedom, oh, freedom, well, that’s just some people talkin’,
your prison is walkin’ through this world all alone.

Don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow an’ the sun won’t shine,
it’s hard to tell the night-time from the day.

You’re losin’ all your highs an’ lows,
ain’t it funny how the feelin’ goes a way.

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses,
come down from your fences,
o pen the gate.

It may be rainin’ but there’s a rainbow above you.
You better let somebody love you,
you better let somebody love you,
before it’s too late.

terryannonline on November 20, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Wasn’t Rick “the dick” Sanchez the loser reporter in south Florida who was sensationalizing right after hurricane Andrew?
I remember him standing over a map of Miami on the studio floor to illustrate the area of destruction, and in live coverage did not shave or shower for days to intentionally get a grungy look on TV. Once a tool, still a tool. (Geraldo Rivera wannabe)

gzelmiami on November 20, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Well if Bush had extended his hand – perhaps there would be a snub.

Bush snubbed if anything them from what I can see.

Google ‘Obama Bully’ and you get 3.63 million hits. OMG! Obama is a bully!

Mr Purple on November 20, 2008 at 9:53 AM

I happen to know that Bush shook hands with everyone of those world leaders in a private meeting a few moments before this video was taken.

Leave to the idiot MSM to be as shallow as my kids wading pool.

Mr Purple on November 20, 2008 at 9:54 AM

You don’t offer your hand to somebody of a higher status, you wait for him to offer his hand first. The POTUS is the highest status in the world, he offers his hand first, and if not, then HE did the snubbing.

Tony737 on November 20, 2008 at 9:55 AM

Sanchez doesn’t have much to say about anything beyond reading a script that is put in front of him and making stupid, inane and snarky comments that expose his political agenda.

Low rent, bottom drawer guy.

This hit piece is specifically designed to make the president look bad. Hey Rick, how about crawling out from under the Obama desk for a minute and roll the best of team Obama reel.

If I recall, Sanchez went after Joe the plumber in an interview and ambushed the guy with all of the dirt he and his news team could find to discredit and humiliate the guy.

Rick Sanchez was a drunk driver who killed a pedestrian and now uses his position to push a political agenda.

moxie_neanderthal on November 20, 2008 at 9:55 AM

You are absolutely right, Right. Bush just came out of meeting with those people and didn’t need to shake their hands. sanchez and the dirtbags at cnn and the rest of the media are great at taking things out of context and twisting them. What is sad is when conservatives, or so called conservatives , fall for it and accept it. The “Mission Accomplished” banner is the perfect example. That banner was put up by the commander of that air craft carrier and it was for the sailors on that ship who were returning home. The media and left are still using that distortion.

peacenprosperity on November 20, 2008 at 9:55 AM

Well if Bush had extended his hand – perhaps there would be a snub.

Bush snubbed if anything them from what I can see.

I’m think there might be more to the story than this video. Maybe they all greeted Bush already and were seeing each other for the first time so that’s why he shook hands. I just get the feeling we aren’t receiving the full picture.

terryannonline on November 20, 2008 at 9:57 AM

Rick Sanchez was a drunk driver who killed a pedestrian and now uses his position to push a political agenda.

Do you have info on this? Maybe someone needs to follow him around on his night off with a camera and video him climbing into his car after a wine fueled dinner. The left would do it, why can’t our side?

peacenprosperity on November 20, 2008 at 9:58 AM

sanchez and the dirtbags at cnn and the rest of the media are great at taking things out of context and twisting them.

peacenprosperity on November 20, 2008 at 9:55 AM

Yeah, but try quoting Rev Wright or Obama’s ‘my muslim faith’ comment and they shriek ‘taken out of context!’

I swear the 2 most common things I heard during this election cycle were ‘taken out of context’ and the ever vague ‘Bush policies’.

Mr Purple on November 20, 2008 at 10:00 AM

If you watch the broader video, you’d see that Hu started it. None of the four before Hu did so and the King, just before Hu, didn’t shake hands with any of the first 4 or five of the back row.

I don’t see it as having anything to do with a snubs, by Bush or anyone else, and everything to do with Hu starting something that was deemed irregular by most but, once started is hard not to continue.

This is just a case of controversy stoking by a journalist. Bloggers do this stuff better. Come to think of it, bloggers do most things better.

Madmonkphotog: I, too, am disappointed in the W presidency for a lot of reasons. National security and supreme court justices being exceptions to that, of course. But to blame Bush for getting BHO into office, and possibly a senate of 60 Dems isn’t fair. He had plenty of help from a pathetic lot of RINO and other Repub senators and congressmen. Blame them all. Then go to work and retake the house in 2010.

I’m pretty sure that if I had spent the last 8 years hearing from every America-hating world leader how awful I was and how awful my country was I probably wouldn’t have wanted to shake anybody’s hand either.

Just sayin’.

Why the f*** do we care?

I am SO SICK AND TIRED of hearing about the “fact” that other stupid, moron Countries don’t like us… Whaw, Whaw… So fricking what!!! They can eat my shorts AFTER I EAT MEXICAN FOOD!

If I was President, I would pull EVERY STICKING DIME from ANY Country that did not support the USA, period! Next, I would cut off ALL funds to the U.N., tell them to pck up and get OUT!

I would pull ALL our troops out from ALL Countries and say, Don’t call us again, till your ready to STFU!

Anyone want to guess how long before we were LOVED by the World again?

British protocol is that once you’ve been formally introduced to the Queen and shook her hand, you must never shake her hand again during your visit. Which makes sense. A handshake on the higher stages of public venues is a ceremonial gesture, and more meaningful in that sense.

It’s not a bunch of guys getting together for drinks and celebratory boasting at a ball game.

Someone asked about Rick Sanchez and his DWI and accident which killed a pedestrian. The man, Jeffrey Smuzinick, later died from his injuries. It should be noted, Rick left/fled the scene and then returned. Nonetheless, prosecutors decided not to charge him with causing bodily injury while driving drunk, a third-degree felony.

Link to news bits.

moxie_neanderthal on November 20, 2008 at 10:18 AM

Maybe there wasn’t any hand sanitizer available. Don’t mean to be snarky, but didn’t we read something recently about the President using hand sanitizer after shaking hands (or was the use of it only reserved for “That One”?). In any event, who cares what they think. I like the President and am going to write and tell him so. We all should. Recognition from the people he served would mean more to him that some plaque on the wall or accolades from some craptastic talking head/news org. Those people are lined up behind the new Prez. He likes that kind of stuff.

Monkeybrains220 on November 20, 2008 at 10:18 AM

This is so ridiculous. I watched the G-20 and when all the leaders arrived. He greeted each one, shook their hands and walked them into the White House. What this looks like to me is a first time meeting by those leader who hadn’t met since they arrived. Why the heck didn’t they show the initial arrival? Instead they have to bash Bush…..again.

It seems to me the whole idea that these leaders don’t like Bush is crazy. He called the leaders of the 20 major industrialized countries and said ‘come on over to the White House so we can talk about the economy’ and they ALL excepted.

Give me a flipping break.

You are either a woman or a child. Pulling the “If you don’t know, I’m not going to tell you” horsecrap is their tool, not the tool of anyone with testicles.

Dirty Sanchez is a classless rube.

Who cares? Sanchez is a tool…why the hell would he need to shake their hands in the first place? ‘Oh, hi, we talk all the time but I need to shake your hands so some idiot at CNN doesn’t twist it into a snub and blame it on me being a bully.” Really?!?! Stupid…of course, Lefties think foreign policy is just a popularity contest, so I can see why they’d be bothered. They’re probably expecting Obama to go in there high-fiving everybody…

So, who’s doing the laughing?
The leaders? The military leaders?
And which countries specifically?

Dave Rywall on November 20, 2008 at 10:44 AM

You want a laundry list? Is that your cutesy way of pretending that your reserves aren’t pitiful, your air forces could protect anything more than an ice cream truck, and that your naval capabilities are anything more than bumper boats?

MadisonConservative on November 20, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Rick Sanchez is a colossal idiot, as anyone who has watched this goof more than once can attest.

BTW Ed, Googling Sanchez + tool yields 8,700,000 hits. Just sayin’…

he still has more power in his office than all of those stunods put together

joey24007 on November 20, 2008 at 10:56 AM

Are you kidding Rick Sanchez? “Here, let me show you this again.” Really? Is this Mean Girls? CNN is a massive clubhouse for the cool kids. They get together and enjoy their superiority via gloating and mockery of others. Arrogant fifteen year olds judge the ‘losers’ like this, and believe that they are above it all.

Citing a Google search as potential proof of anything, much less the Bush-hatred phenomena everyone knows to be virulent online, is not merely bogus, but as couched here, rawly malicious.

This isn’t about Bush. Those here who are arguing about whether Sanchez is right are missing a larger issue: the entire segment is another joke from CNN. Picture world leaders failing to offer Obama a handshake: That’s a declaration of war liberals could agree on.
