Rush Limbaugh did not lose the election

posted at 2:00 pm on November 20, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Two editorials in the past two days have attempted to shift blame for two successive election losses onto someone who has never run for public office.  Both Mort Kondracke and Karen Harper blame Rush and other conservative talk-show hosts for the GOP’s descent into the minority in Washington DC.  Neither, though, explain how a conservative talk-show host whose policy positions got largely ignored over the last eight years cost Republican candidates votes.

Kondracke:

How can the Republican Party rebound? The first step would be to quit letting Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham set its agenda. …

Step One is to fire Rush Limbaugh and his ilk as the intellectual bosses of the GOP. They shouldn’t be muzzled, as some liberals want to do by reviving the “fairness doctrine” in broadcasting, just ignored more frequently.

In recent years, Republicans have let right-wing talk show hosts whip the GOP base into frenzies — over immigration, brain-damage victim Terry Schiavo and same-sex marriage — that have branded the party as troglodyte.

Huh?  Did Rush or any of the other people Kondracke mentions support an explosion of pork-barrel spending?  As far as I know, Rush never uttered the phrase “compassionate conservatism” without irony or contempt.  Rush, Laura, Sean, and the rest of the talk-show circuit certainly didn’t back the biggest expansion of discretionary spending by the federal government in decades.  Other than the war and judicial nominations, Kondracke would be hard-pressed to identify which parts of the Republican agenda as pursued by GOP officeholders over the last decade belonged to Rush.

Harper falls into the same trap, only more insultingly:

However, Governor Jindal and other moderates must contend with Rush Limbaugh and others like him.  Limbaugh, the Jerry Springer of radio, continues to encourage his listeners to support the right wing conservative wing of the Republican party as he trashes anyone who disagrees with him and that includes moderate centrist Republicans.

Irony spill on Aisle 1!  Harper complains about Rush “trashing” people with whom he disagrees at the same time as she calls him the Jerry Springer of talk radio.  Well, thanks for the tolerance lesson, Karen!  We’ll put that right up there with Kathleen Parker’s “Oogedy Boogedy” description of Christians.

And how exactly is Rush equivalent to Jerry Springer?  Does he host fistfights between mutants over politics?  No.  Rush gives his opinion on politics, avoiding the incessant talking-head shouting matches we see much more often on cable television.

You know, it’s odd; when Republicans won elections, no one seemed to mind Rush and his energy to bring conservatives to the table.  When Republicans stopped being conservatives, or at least stopped acting like conservatives and more like the kind of Democrat Lite that Kondracke and Harper prefer, they stopped winning elections — and started blaming Rush Limbaugh for it.  Kondracke wants Republican politicians to ignore Rush, Laura, and Sean, but they’ve been doing that since 2001, and that’s not Rush’s fault.

The GOP will go nowhere if it engages in scapegoating talk radio for the next couple of years.  Republicans have lost two successive elections because American voters will choose Democrats when given a choice between an authentic Democrat and a fake Democrat.  We’re not going to win elections by making Republicans more like Democrats.  We will win elections when Republicans do the following:

  • Find a First Principles approach that will unite the conservative coalitions, as Reagan did in 1980
  • Have a zero-tolerance policy for corruption
  • Stop supporting pork-barrel spending
  • Take concrete steps to shrink the federal government
  • Take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences for them instead of scapegoating talk radio

Note to Kondracke and Harper: Rush doesn’t work for the Republican Party.  The Republican Party doesn’t follow Rush’s policy agenda, and hasn’t since George Bush came to office.  The notion that the main problem with the GOP is Rush Limbaugh is profoundly foolish, so much so that only Beltway insiders could possibly reach that conclusion.

Mort is a jerk. He was so appalled by the selection of Sarah Palin that he referred to her as “the right wing whacko”. These guys will say and do anything to get their name in the news. Must be a very ugly competitive atmospher these days. Everyone wants a guest spot, a half-hour special or a radio contract. Freaks.

Kondracke has the IQ of a grape. You can be sure he stole this idea from someone else, as he has never had an original thought of his own.

over immigration, brain-damage victim Terry Schiavo and same-sex marriage

As an Independent, I do want our borders secured and immigrants coming in only the legal way. I do not think Terry Schiavo should have been a federal issue, but there had been an agreement that her husband later tried to break. I would be happy to vote for SSM, but it is a change and as such should be left to the political branches, not the judicial. And apparently very blue Oregon and California don’t want SSM.

It’s when elephants start acting like donkeys that they are in trouble.

Every. Single. Time.

All these talking heads are now telling conservatives to IGNORE conservative principles when it is PC to do so, as Bush and McCain have done. Then if we would only nominate politicians like Bush and McCain, we would start winning elections! Great idea, thanks! Thanks, thanks a lot.

Rush has been spot on a good 95% of the time and Kondrake hasn’t been panned out quite so well.

We’ve lost because Democrats ran to the right of Republicans on multiple winning occasions.

It’s simple, either we stand for Conservative principles or we’ve lost our way before we even start.

Speakup on November 20, 2008 at 2:12 PM

Let’s see. Palin? Effectively executed by the press and McCain, who, despite the fact that the rumors were a hoax, didn’t move to decry them.

Huckabee’s gone after every conservative that ran for office.

Now we’re working on taking down Rush?

Something tells me that the Republican Party would rather avoid the blame for abandoning conservative principles altogether, in the most mafia-like manner possible.

Letting Mort Kondracke prescribe strategy for conservatives is like letting Syria advise on Israeli defense policy.

Cicero43 on November 20, 2008 at 2:12 PM

The reason the election was lost was because people didn’t listen enough to the likes of Ingraham, Limbaugh, etc. They were practically screaming against McCain and he still ended up on the ticket. Their message of conservatism works if you listen to it and apply it.

You know our first and most important battle to re-establish oursleves is with ourselves.

There is going to be a growing storm of spineless jelly fish conservatives in our party like Mort that want to use this loss as a reason to move even farther to the center and maybe even left on some issues because they honestly believe that is why we lost the election.

This is the battle that we must win and win with new ideas wrapped in solid conservative ideals and values. If we fail to do this first before we even think about fighting liberals then conservatism is doomed forever.

Rush Limbaugh did not lose the election

Sorry Ed. Wrong.

Limbaugh and Hannity have become synonyms for rabble rousing and populist flame-fanning. This was Mort’s point. The GOP, at the prodding of talk radio, began talking to it’s base to the exclusion of independent-leaning and moderate Republicans. The base can’t win you elections. And as long as you have a megamillionaire, cigar-chomping showman as your mouthpiece (who’s more interested in himself than the country), ordinary Americans are going to be turned off.

Even the ultra-lib Barbars Walters calls Rush one of the ten most fascinating people in the world.

technopeasant on November 20, 2008 at 2:34 PM

Rush, Laura, and Sean often articulate and define conservative positions on issues and events, and are seen by many to represent conservatism–as in a way, they do–but they are not the fount from which all conservative ideas flow. Personally, I am not a fan of Rush Limbaugh’s for a number of reasons, but I like Sean Hannity, his obvious love of the fight, and think Laura Ingraham is one of the more attractive ilks I have ever seen.

One call to Rush’s show by McCain would have gone a long way towards getting more conservatives to trust him (McCain) for more reasons than his selection of Palin as running mate.

On the contrary, “ordinary Americans” are the ones who listen to Rush, Sean and Laura, and were the ones least catered to in this election cycle. If moderate Republicans and Independents could rule the day, then McCain would have won. It’s the base that stayed home or voted for someone else other than McCain or Obama, and look what we got…

Mort Kondracke is a boor who is past his prime.. if he ever reached it in the first place. And Karen Who? Rush, Sean and Laura will continue to keep the pulse on conservatism and continue to win their audiences. In four years I doubt if Mort Kondracke will even be on television.

For all our claims to be the party of “personal responsibility”, there sure is a lot of finger pointing going on….

Diogenes Online on November 20, 2008 at 3:00 PM

My friends, the fact that so few of you realize that Mr. Limbaugh is merely a comedian is a source of endless entertainment to the rest of us.

benny shakar on November 20, 2008 at 3:00 PM

Here’s an Idea for the future of the Republican Party. Let’s take pages from losing campaigns, and use them. For example, our next candidate could sweat a lot and look shifty on camera, ala Nixon during the Kennedy Debate. We could tell the people that rising energy costs just mean you’ll have to put a sweater on, ala Jimmy Carter.

Only Dolts with less brain power than a forth grader would even consider doing that, and yet, the Moderate wing of the Republican party insist this is the way to go to win. If you have the same policies as your opponent, then it’s a popularity test, a test of charisma. Now, who do you think is going to get more favorable press and be presented in a light that the American people would like. Democrats, or the wannabe Democrats, the Republicans?

How can the Republican Party rebound? The first step would be to quit letting Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham set its agenda

. …

How is Rush setting the agenda? People listen to him because the agree. I love Rush

Step One is to fire Rush Limbaugh and his ilk as the intellectual bosses of the GOP.

Fire him and you fire me. OOps, you already fired me when you planted McCain in the primary

They shouldn’t be muzzled, as some liberals want to do by reviving the “fairness doctrine” in broadcasting, just ignored more frequently.

Like the public ignored your candidate in the last election?

In recent years, Republicans have let right-wing talk show hosts whip the GOP base into frenzies — over immigration, brain-damage victim Terry Schiavo and same-sex marriage — that have branded the party as troglodyte.

Rush does not have to whip me up into a frenzy.

Those are my values

Since you consider those values the values of troglodytes, why not rewrite the platform to attract the non-troglodyte voters you are seeking i.e. democrats

Here is a clue Nemo: if Rush is able to whip troglodytes into a frenzy over over “immigration, brain-damage victim Terry Schiavo and same-sex marriage” why don’t you set up a venue supporting gay marriage, amnesty, and murdering more brain damaged Terri Schiavos to attract those non troglodytes to your fold?

Do you think the public is so Neanderthal they cannot understand your arguments but they can understand Rush?

Kondracke may be the missing link

By “the rest of us” you’re referring to the small percentage of the population that still believes Obama just wants what’s best for you, and that the government will always be there to swab your boo-boos and clean up after you? That “rest of us”. Do-nothing, lame brain, lazy, liberal SFBs? It figures.

AubieJon on November 20, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Republicans lost this election simply because Conservationism WAS NOT on the ballot.

You can criticize Rush for his ego, millions, cigars, bravado or anything else but he is a conservative. He preaches it 15 hours a week.

When the Republican Party decides to become conservative again it will win elections again. Like too damn many of our fellow citizens it’s always gotta be someone else’s fault when we fail. Heaven forbid we should held responsible for our actions……………..

Rant over…

So the “republican media” types are writing articles asking if Rush Limbaugh,Sean Hannity,Laura Ingraham & Sarah Palin want to be blind folded & smoke a cigarette before they are given the politcal execution?

I say its high noon, and the sooner we destroy Kondrake,Noonan,Parker,Frum,Brooks and their Ilk the better off we are in 2010. The longer they think they speak for conservatives, the worse it will get. They will try and hijack the 2010 races electing RINOS and making this imaginary Tent they speak off so big it will let in anyone with a pulse. ENOUGH.

portlandon on November 20, 2008 at 3:12 PM

We need all the help we can get to stand up to the “drive by” media. In my mind it was the MSM that cost us the election. The polls that show people did not know who said “57 states” or why Bill Ayers was like Tm McVey– prove it. Mort is a Dem–so why do we care what he has to say. Join Rush 24/7 –its worth it. –and Mike Curch at 9:00 on Serrius Patriot is really good, too.

Where is the liberal version of Rush Limbaugh?

Where is the moderate one?

Hmmmmm.

The liberal version of Rush was Al Franken–jeane Gerafalo–and still on Serrius–Lynn Samuals–but they are so crazy no one listens

I dunno, I think there are a lot of people out there that think that this is the job of government. Are you sure it is just a “small” percentage?

I would love to think there are more of us than there are of the person you were responding too, but I am just not convinced we are that smart anymore.

Yeah. What you said.

I’m obviously a troglodyte, so forgive me if I just sit here and nod appreciatively.

hillbillyjim on November 20, 2008 at 3:17 PM

Whenever I read criticism of Rush and Sean I get the distinct feeling that the critic has never actually listened to their shows, but is instead just passing along the “received wisdom” that they are doing this or saying that.

I recall that a year ago or so, a third party survey showed that Rush’s listeners we among the best informed people in the country on political and economic matters. Maybe, just maybe the geniuses in DC should stop yakking and start LISTENING.

in_awe on November 20, 2008 at 3:18 PM

We lost because we had a crappy candidate, not because of Rush Limbaugh. He KNEW what was going to happen. He knew we would lose the electionn because there was not a conservative on the presidential ballot.
