The obligatory “Everyone getting pretty tired of Kathleen Parker’s shtick” post

“Everyone” in this case being Jonah Goldberg and the amens that greeted these two shots fired from the Corner at her latest. Count me in, albeit reluctantly: If you think her martyr complex is irritating now, wait until she starts citing those posts as evidence that she’s been excommunicated, oogedy-boogedy-like, from the church of conservative opinion. I suspect the reply column — doubtless to be entitled, “Here I Stand, I Can Do No Other” — is being written as we speak. Goldberg:
Please stop bragging about how courageous you are for weathering a storm of nasty email you invite on yourself by dancing to a liberal tune. You aren’t special for getting nasty email, from the right or the left. You aren’t a martyr smoking your last cigarette. You’re just another columnist, talented and charming to be sure, but just another columnist. You are not Joan of the Op-Ed Page.
The bragging in today’s piece wasn’t the worst part; it’s limited to one jokey line about risking the firing squad for criticizing Christians, an amazing show of restraint given how she’s devoted entire op-eds to her hate mail recently. In fact, I wonder if blog readers familiar with the phenomenon of disgruntled conservatives building shrines to their own magnificent bravery aren’t visiting the sins of others on her by overestimating how self-righteous she’s actually been. Patterico put it well:
On the Internet, when you say things that people disagree with, people are sometimes nasty. It’s a fact of life. Usually, it’s the “other side” that gets nasty, but if you say things that your own side intensely disagrees with, your own side can get nasty too.
When that happens, some people flip out. And the way a lot of them react is to sprain their shoulder patting themselves on the back for their own Incredible Courage. Andrew Sullivan is the quintessential example of this sort of blogger…
While it’s very seductive to have people call you brave, and I don’t mean to be rude to people who are trying to compliment me, I utterly reject any such notion as ridiculous. If you’re going to regularly spout opinions, you have to be ready to have people disagree, from whatever side. That just comes with the territory.
The worst is when these self-described paragons of integrity abandon all their principles out of pique, and run to the other side. I do not respect Sullivan because I think he has no core principles. To me, he seems to crave adulation, and when he didn’t get it from the right, he ran to the left and positioned himself as a supposedly “courageous” conservative — a Fearless Man unafraid to Speak the Truth.
Parker hasn’t gone running to the left or abandoned all her principles, but there is a sense that we’re in the early scenes here of a movie we’ve seen before. And “Fearless Woman Unafraid to Speak the Truth” is shaping up to be just as insufferably strident and predictable as the earlier flicks. Even so, like Ace says, the worst part isn’t the bragging but the smug cutesiness of it all. Arch, patronizing, preoccupied with Palin as a foil, overly fond of gimmicky language like “oogedy-boogedy” and “‘pubbies”: I’ve seen this movie before too, and one Dowd, really, is enough. Exit question: Is that an unfair comparison — to Dowd, I mean? After all, she’s never written a column seriously asserting that McCain picked Palin partly because he thought she was hot.

It’s time for Parker to shack up with Noonan and grab two seats on The View.

Fair to compare her to Dowd? Long-term, no, lately, yes.

“Talented and charming to be sure” is too gallant praise for Kathleen “Who?” Parker. Is tearing down accomplished women a talent in the Tanning Bed Media? It’s anything but charming.

I don’t care if Parker turns on Obama with a vengeance. I will never forget what she has done. If I had the power I would work to end her career. Since I don’t I’m just going to refuse to read anything she writes and pretend she doesn’t exist.
D0WNT0WN on November 19, 2008 at 4:24 PM
Kathleen Parker is really repulsive.
She obsesses about Palin endlessly, describes her in the most despicable terms, and then cries like little infant when she gets critical response.
This is my opinion about her, Peggy Noonan, David Frum, George Will, David Brooks and the other East Coast elites: STFU!

Wasn’t one of her complaints about Gov. Palin about the way she speaks? The person who writes “oogedy-boogedy” is going to whine about “You betcha”? Sorry but the trophy bride lost all of her credibility when she whined that her husband thinks Gov. Palin was attractive.
Cindy Munford on November 19, 2008 at 4:28 PM
Who? Are ya’ll talking about some dead-tree columnist? Who cares? Other dead-tree writers will certainly wring their hands and moan and mutter and tear at their sackcloth.
But in the long run, her core audience is made up of regular newspaper readers. An audience which clearly skew liberal, and is just as clearly shrinking faster than the stack of free cookies at a Weight Watchers meeting.

She wants to be known for something, she can’t be Palin, she can be the woman, er women..er men, well a member of an enormous crowd of people, who bashed Palin in the Media…she’s just trying to keep her head up higher then the rest of the Palin bashers, so someone will remember her for something. But I don’t read what she writes so I am not going to remember “diddly squat”..so if she uses that phrase “diddly squat” which is what her Palin bashing has amounted to, someone let me know GRIN.

progressoverpeace on November 19, 2008 at 4:36 PM
Kathleen Sullivan is best ignored.
Even when she was on the “right” side, she very rarely had anything interesting to say. But now that she is doing her martyr routine, she has even less.
I simply do not click on her columns anymore. I know what they say, and I know I will find them annoying. I know that by ignoring her, I am doing the best I can to make her go away.
gridlock2 on November 19, 2008 at 4:37 PM
“Obligatory” means our author is self-aware about the inevitable (one might say obligatory) echo-chamber effect of blogging. It allows us the readers to recognize that we are reading quality blog, a cut above the hacks who dont recognize an echo when they post one. This in turn makes us feel better about ourselves.
And if Allah wants to be condescending to his readers he has the actual content of the post to do that in.

I get a little tired of people who write or say provocative things then cry when they get flak for it. You write the things Parker’s has to get attention. Coulter often intentionally writes provocative things. You don’t hear her cry when people assail her for it. I’ve been pretty tired of Peggy Noonan’s shtick this cycle too. Make up your damn mind Peggy!

Parker Who? Never heard of the woman before she tore into Gov Palin.
Parker needs to thank Gov Palin for giving her a career.
unseen on November 19, 2008 at 4:39 PM
She is exactly who Palin was talking about, when in her speech she mentioned she wasn’t going to Washington to meet these snobs…and Parker knew she was talking to her.
So as far as Parker is concerned, Palin threw the first insult…Parker just can’t admit it, being a snob and all.
right2bright on November 19, 2008 at 4:39 PM
We do not see why she has to play the martyr card. After all, as an opinion-based pundit, she is welcome to spout her opinion. As bloggers that opine on all aspects of current events and politics — at least as much as we can — we know there will be critics out there ready to pounce at the slightest mistake we make, or the smallest opinion we might make.
It comes with the territory.
We share Jonah’s opinion about her. Everyone is plain sick and tired of the conservative pundits that turned away from our nominee. We could say the same of Michelle Malkin, and her distate and distrust of John McCain. The difference between Michelle and Kathleen is that Michelle isn’t setting herself up as some sort of martyr. That, and we agreed with her when it came to McCain — that we really couldn’t trust him much — and yet we voted for him anyway. Why? Because he was better than Obama. For that matter, a rock on the side of the road was better than Obama.
But as to Kathleen’s “oh-woe-is-me, pity-me” routine, what is truly irritating about this is that she thinks that conservatives turned their backs on her. Not true. It was she who turned her back on conservatives. She did it with the snarky columns and apparent jealousy (possibly, though not confirmed) of Sarah Palin. Even in this piece, just two weeks after the election, she is still bringing up Palin.
I wrote about this on our site. And I stand behind what I said. “Sarah Palin went back to her job as governor. It’s time for Kathleen Parker to go back to irrelevance and mediocrity.”
MrAndMrsSmith on November 19, 2008 at 4:39 PM
What I want to know is how Kathleen “who?” Parker manages to type her columns, her hands being nailed to a cross and all.
Or I assume they are, judging from her “look at me I’m so courageous and pesecuted can I be on MSNBC now” drivel.

Dead on! Few people read her column prior to Palin’s arrival on the scene. How sad for her that she is desperately trying to make a name for herself by slamming another. Outside of trying to get a cocktail party invitation, I think she is rabidly jealous of Ms. Palin and is using her column as therapy to get over it.
sherry on November 19, 2008 at 4:47 PM
Who would draw a bigger crowd? Palin or Parker? Whose book would sell better? Who does Parker’s husband (or anyone else for that matter) find more attractive? Who is more beloved by the conservative masses?
Kathleen Parker seems just petty, like she can’t handle the popularity of Sarah Palin. Why else would she panicky grasps at any untrue rumor about Palin and endlessly obsesses about her. She is not being intellectual, its more like an extremely immature high-school act.
It’s amazing to me that this woman has a nationally syndicated column. She makes Maureen Dowd seem like an intellectual giant.

I wrote her an email that was terse, without being downright nasty. So she can add me to her list of dissenting haters.
joliveroconnell on November 19, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Can someone please explain to me how long Andrew Sullivan is going to be called a conservative? As long as he is a pretender to that title he will be the “token” on pundit panels. Now of course they can add Noonan and Parker to the list with Brooks, Will and Gergan thereby giving the MSM the illusion of being fairand stifling any true conservative message.

This snarky, “Mean Girls”-esque backbiting behavior directed at Sarah by women in the media and in her own campaign camp, etc. is exactly the kind of junior high nonsense that perpetuates stereotypes of women as catty and overly emotional. We are, sadly, our own worst enemy. Poor Sarah is like the pretty new girl in school who gets all the boys’ attention and all the girls’ derision and contempt. They don’t like the competition. I can just picture them all huddled together in some metaphorical girls’ bathroom whispering about how they will stab her in the back next.
I have been so ashamed of my gender these past several months, and esp. of those in my own party who are behaving this way. It is really disheartening. No other “protected class” is known to cannibalize its members in such a manner.

ddrintn on November 19, 2008 at 5:07 PM
As far as I know Kathleen Parker has never apologized to Sarah Palin for claiming she ‘cannot string two lines’ together’, implying she is a functional illiterate. All Sarah did after your famous comment on the Couric interview was to rout Biden in the debate complete with coherent thrust and parries and give one fabulous eloquent and convincing speech after another until the end of the campaign. As for the current column Ms. Parker you need not apply for martyrdon anytime soon. Unlike the left’s intense animosity towards Sarah and their wish to literally crucify her, we on the ‘religious’ right only pity you. We would never dream of or sanction taking your loving affection for your husband away from him.

…for Sullivan, you could substitute Parker…and Buckley…a few bloggers here…a few bloggers there….
…the truth is the first casualty of war…principles are the first casualty of any election cycle…anything to win…once one, you then have to either rebuild your integrity from scratch (if you ever had any), or govern in the all-too-familiar “poll-to-poll” method…pandering scientifically, as it were….
…that a class of people, whose fingernail hold on the language and style make reading their dribblings bearable, seem all of them — not just Sullivan and Parker — a bit thin of skin when their tripe isn’t swallowed whole. Selling ones opinion is a little like whoring…except that a whore services you…it would seem that those in the punditocracy wish the public to service them….
…quite a few of the posters here on HA are as qualified, both by the quality of their prose and the accuracy of their aim, to sell their opinions for at least the same rate as the many talking heads we suffer through daily…and few of them are so precious about their image as to kvetch on cue….
…maybe these hothouse flowers might do well to visit with the inhabitants of “flyover country” and find out how the other half lives….
Puritan1648 on November 19, 2008 at 5:39 PM
Kathleen Parker before the election looked at the likely outcome and decided that the Republican Party was going into the Wilderness. Fair enough.
Then, realizing that demand for her punditry (we’re talking income here folks) was going to drop off, she made an economic tactical decision.
Start bashing Conservatives and make the Liberaltards swoon. Get a lot of calls for her to write more traitorous columns.
Run to the bank, Kathleen. Run to the bank.
While you’re there, ask if you can get a discount on a safety deposit box for your soul. Someday you may need it.
