Perino: Conditions in Iraq now amount to victory

posted at 9:29 pm on November 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

Or, to be more precise, “the victory that we’ve had so far.” Much depends on those last two words, needless to say. I appreciate the spirit of the blogburst Zombie’s organizing for Saturday, and lord knows he/she has plenty of credible milblogger opinion to support the argument, but five years of having to wear the “Mission Accomplished” albatross around our necks is enough to make me blanch forevermore at declarations of victory, especially when Petraeus himself has vowed never to use the word. How about, in lieu of Victory in Iraq Day, we celebrate Tremendous Progress in Iraq that Almost No One Thought Possible, Least of All Our Modern-Day Lincoln Day instead?

Speaking of Lincoln, the relentlessly anti-war McClatchy is dumping all over the new security pact but read this WaPo story from yesterday to see how much easier it makes things for The One. He gets his timetable after all — with Bush’s name on the dotted line and, just maybe, Bush’s defense secretary to see it through. Click the image to watch.

Update: Did I neglect to mention that the pact still needs to be approved by the Iraqi parliament? Gulp.

O All-Peaceful Bestower of Peace, when does Perino get to the part about how Bush spent 700 billion dollars and 4000 lives so that the Iraqis could write shari’a law into their constitution and create a defacto Islamic state?
Is that the “victory” of which you speak?

matoko_chan on November 19, 2008 at 9:36 PM

… we’ve been able to have tremendous successes on the security front, both because of the bravery of our soldiers and the work that they’ve done …

Cool, now let’s get more troops to Afghanistan and pray that Barry doesn’t screw it up.

Uh. Huh. The reason that we have progress in Iraq is because of Bush and the SURGE.
If we would have listened to the messiah’s plan, we would be under attack in our own country, with the government having to take over our financial and uh, well, we would have fallen into socialism…uh, Nevermind.

The reason we are winning in Iraq is because of our soldiers, not because of that asshat Obama.

HornetSting on November 19, 2008 at 9:39 PM

Good. Now the rest of the Middle East can follow Iraq’s beacon of hope and freedom. The OPEC oil cartel is broken. We have an ally which will make peace with Israel and hopefully invade Iran and Syria without us having to do it.

Read “America’s Victories: Why the U.S. Wins Wars and Will Win the War on Terror” by Larry Schweikart.

“America’s armed services are under attack. From college campuses to the floor of the Senate, the Iraq war is portrayed as a quagmire, the Army is described as “broken,” and our men and women in uniform are maligned as torturers. Hollywood keeps producing anti-war films, and the media celebrates liberal anti-military activists such as Cindy Sheehan.

“These critics fail to understand the real nature of the American military. By seeing everything through the distorted lens of Vietnam — a war shrouded in harmful myths —they have lost sight of our country’s real military record, and the factors that have enabled us to win with remarkable consistency, in situations even more dire than Iraq.

“In America’s Victories, Professor Larry Schweikart restores the truth about our amazing military heritage. Just as he did in his acclaimed previous book, A Patriot’s History of the United States, Professor Schweikart cuts through the distortions passed along by academia and the media.”

Were you saying the same thing while he was at the UN making the case for the Iraq war?

And you reference Salon and TNR on your comments as “proof”. Please, take your faux intellectualism, back to the Atlantic with Andrew Sullivan and write again about how you know that Palin lost us the election.

some truth to that, but consider the lefts dispersal of erroneous and at times out right lies of the efforts involved.

The commies last thing they want to see is any middle east reform.

Not only will the liberty of the nation of Iraq be a threat to the totalitarians of the middle east because the economic disparity between the two will educate all.

The introduction of law will make it so much harder to grift from these places.

The left are nothing more than ” global ghetto builders”.

True, but…

It takes no space cadet to understand this is a setup. Shortly after the Obama inauguration, or maybe even before, the Iraq war will be re-opened, mainly by Iranian aggression. What’s uncertain is the strength of Obama’s response.

The Iraq war has been won, but the victory won’t be sustained if we decline to stabilize the peace for at least the next several years. I want to think Obama will act decisively and responsively, but it’s too soon even to guess.

Once again- to those parroting the ‘mission accomplished’ meme- that was referring to the US armed forces in general, and that ship in particular- seizing control away from Saddam. This is a standard exclamation of success in the US military. Bush’s speech on the deck of that ship clearly stated that the effort in Iraq was not complete and that there was much more work to do. So stop referring to that event as something it wasn’t.

……… Spot on!

And yet the trolls, or anyone forget, the MSM and leftist Democrats have used this war for “political fodder” since day one, without any regard for the millions freed from ruthless totalitarian rule, rape rooms, and mass graves to our fallen and still fighting brave soldiers.

How many intelligence weapons were “leaked” to the press, how many speeches by Democrats that our soldiers were Nazis to the war was lost, how many recruiting tools and propaganda did they actually provide our enemy to draw out this war?

All you have to look at apart from the 24/7 onslaught on President Bush is how they went after “Joe the Plumber”, but especially Gov. Sarah Palin. Mix that with the love fest for Mr. Barak Obama, President Elect, the Office of… and we come to following conclusion.

How, with the MSM being totally in the bag for the Democrats can we actually know what is or has been going on in the War Against Terror, current campaign, Iraq?

It’s because they stopped reporting the dead count, day in day out, every ten minutes, drumming down the American resolve, as we started to turn the corner and actually begin down the road to Victory.

They want to change the story line to Mr. Obama, President Elect, the Office of…… but those of us that have supported the troops, the mission, and know the dangers in this world that still exist will never let this story fade away.

After 9/11 President Bush understood that the cause was the absolute disregard for decency and law fostered by the tyrants of the middle east.

Catching obl in itself would have changed nothing in the dynamics, thats why the commies were OK with only the Afghanistan part.

And thats why president Bush invaded Iraq.

He didnt want revenge, he wanted real change and that will only come with proactive measures that rid the middle east and elsewhere from tyranny.

He could have started with syria or iran, but iraq da the strongest case.

What is occurring now is that a coubtry named Iraq, with hard fought liberty and free of international sanctions will now dismantle the status quo of the middle east.

Economic disparities will be amplified and exacercerbate due to the reckless and innefficient management, and thats being kind, of the despots.

The only way we can fail is by cowardice in the face of evil.

And yes, if your intent is to hack out the legs of our leadership during a time of war you are treacherous.

I hope the Iraqi people will be ok. I hope that Bush declares Victory soon. I can see a few vile and despicable trolls in here. Is ok, the sheep will pay. We will know who they are. We will make them miserable. Because they are miserable. They hate themselves for the cowards that they are. They couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag. They don’t know the truth. They only know their own lies. I can’t wait to hear them whence when The Dictator f***s up. And when he doesn’t keep his promises to the sheep. He lied to get their stupidity. As I can see by what they wrote. They are just plain stupid.

Jim…

Perfect, just perfect.

I think General P deserves a few streets and avenues to bear his name.

But knowing libs, they’ll probably be in Iraq.

swami on November 19, 2008 at 11:42 PM

Sure, it’s a calculated risk- but once in awhile I’ll feed 10 trolls on the outside chance of educating one…

Bush wins war before Obama can surrender

Left declares something and sucks pink thumb.

Make that 4,201 (and 4,062 since “Mission Accomplished).

Oh… and 30,000 wounded.

Benny (or any other liberals walking by), who is responsible for the deaths of these brave volunteer American soldiers? Bush or terrorists?

faraway on November 19, 2008 at 11:51 PM

For Benny the Butt-Boy and his friends:

I wonder why we didn’t have Nightline keeping a running total of murders in U.S. cities with Democrat mayors for the last 8 years? Chicago alone is ahead of the entire country of Iraq year-to-date.

That would be the Chicago of Rich Squeaky Daley, Rahm the Ballerina Emanuel, Jesse The Lesser Jackson Jr., and Barry The One Obambi.

My friends, please keep listening to Rush, Fox, and of course your fellow bloggers, you’ve become real political insiders.

But the real enemy on our streets is Winchester, Colt, Sig, Mossberg, Remington, HK, Savage, Bushmaster, and the evil gun shop owners who supply all the criminals with their weapons. Thank goodness they will all soon be in Chap 13 and we can get back to planting daisies in inner city parks and turn all those guns into basketball hoops.

thanks benny- you made my point for me- and I don’t listen to Rush, or Hannity- just the network that both Hillary and Obama said covered the prez election the most fairly.

If you think GWB finally admitting and apologizing for his boneheaded move somehow makes your “point,” you’re worse off than I had feared. Not that I’m surprised.

I don’t understand the people that go crazy over the mission accomplished sign. The mission of removing the brutal regime and defeating the standing military WAS accomplished. The commander in chief was going to pat the soldiers who risked their lives on the back…for heaven’s sake, what did the detractors expect? No banner? Maybe a banner that said, “good job on that tiny task, much more ahead you lousy bstards.” ?? Or maybe “mission sorta accomplished partly halfway!” ??

People neglect the fact that the military victory in so quickly removing the despot and his regime and the military defending that regime was brilliant as far as military campaigns go.

I just never understood the outrage over the banner.

TheBlueSite on November 20, 2008 at 1:17 AM

…forevermore at declarations of victory, especially when Petraeus himself has vowed never to use the word.

Yeah, it’s called Military Vision

“They are our next-door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska”
-Klondike Barbie, 9.2008″

I’m sorry, but does ANY rational person really think Palin was trying to use this as a claim of foreign policy experience?

Besides- this quote is cut off. It continues with “–from an island in Alaska.” Now, she didn’t name the island, and she didn’t seem to know what the island’s name was. So, we can assume she’s probably never been to the island. So, we can sssume that she’s not touting this as foreign policy experience by saying that humans, (but not her personally) can see Russia from an island in Alaska, the name of which she doesn’t even know.

This is the entire part of that interview:

PALIN: First off, we’re going to continue good relations with Saakashvili there. I was able to speak the other day and giving my commitment, as John McCain’s running mate, that we will be committed to Georgia. And we have to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have asserted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable. And we have to keep …

GIBSON: You believe unprovoked?

PALIN: I do believe unprovoked. And we have to keep our eyes on Russia. Under the leadership there.

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions particularly in the last couple weeks does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.

GIBSON: You favor putting Georgia and Ukraine into NATO?

PALIN: Ukraine definitely yes. Yes. And Georgia. Putin thinks otherwise, obviously he thinks otherwise.

Now, this probably didn’t come out as well as she wanted, but from that statement alone, her attackers think that this is somehow indicates she believes this counts as foreign policy experience by being in close proximity to Russia? They’re not even talking about foreign policy experience…so those who claim she was touting this as such experience are spouting nonsense.
