Huckabee: I wish I could have gotten an easy ride to national prominence like Sarah Palin

posted at 5:27 pm on November 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

He’s not saying it critically, mind you. Since when has Huck ever been critical of a rival, overtly or otherwise?

Huckabee had some interesting observations about Sarah Palin, a potential 2012 opponent, suggesting that she didn’t earn her spurs and was more appealing to the base of the party because she hadn’t been scrutinized in the primary.

“What John McCain did for her was to give her the capacity to sort of leapfrog over the process and get right to the center stage,” he said of the GOP’s vice presidential nominee.

Unlike those, he added, who had competed in the Republican primary.

“She didn’t have to get bloodied like us. Few people on that stage didn’t get bloodied.”

He did allow, though, that she did get bloodied — “but not by the people Republicans care about, you guys.”

Fearing that this lament might sound a tad resentful, he went on to stress that he was merely envious, nothing more. Oh, and he also reminded McCain that he blew the race by not opposing the bailout and probably would have lost the nomination to Huck himself if so many state primaries hadn’t been winner take all.

Exit admission: The only thing keeping me blogging through this long, long winter of conservative discontent is the dream of a Huck/Palin death match in 2011 to determine who the one true “Christian leader” is. Followed, of course, by 15 Kathleen Parker columns proclaiming the end of conservatism, and then 15 more describing the resulting hate mail. (Just kidding. She’ll have renounced the right long before then.)

Yes.

Christians are a majority in this country.

If we worked together and only voted for the Laity, we would not be having problems like this(Barack Hussein Obama/Mccain).

Romeo13 on November 19, 2008 at 7:09 PM

The excerpts that I have read on Huck’s autobio sound like a lot of sour grapes and general whining.

Which is too bad, because his concession speech (from around 8 months ago) was the best speech of the last political season.

I have also enjoyed seeing and hearing him on Fox as of late.

But, let’s get real.

He complains about being jilted by the 400 lb. polyester televangelist, John Hagy, from whom McCain wisely dissasociated himself after Hagy called my church, the Catholic Church, “the great whore.”

Why on earth would Huck want to be endorsed by someone like Hagy, who pays himself over $1,000,000 per year from his church funds and whose last marriage ended in divorce due to his having an affair?

I used to have a good bit of respect for Huck, but he has lost me for good this time.

For that matter, Huck kind of personifies the mediocre slate of Republican candidates for the 2008 nomination.

Maybe Chris Buckley was right after all – just kidding.

Somebody send this no talent assclown hillbilly preacher back to Bumf*ck, Arkansas where he belongs.

Percy_Peabody on November 19, 2008 at 7:12 PM

Rasmussen Poll: Sarah Palin has a 91% favorable rating among Republicans. When asked who they would support for the 2012 nomination, Sarah trounced the competition with 64%. The Huckster got 12%.

The more I see of Huckabee, the more I dislike him. I would be suprised if he got into double digits in any primary in 2012 (Except maybe Arkansas). He is just a loser.

Norwegian on November 19, 2008 at 5:46 PM

You know I wasn’t into the Huckmania when the primaries were happening b/c I was and have been learning this process. But he dared step on my girl’s territory and that is a big no-no. Norwegian, no he is not wanted in AR because he raised taxes there. Just the Clintons.

Somebody, anybody volunteer to put him in a wagon and wheel him to your closest church? He seriously needs to confess his transgressions.

chunderroad on November 19, 2008 at 7:18 PM

Oh, I forgot to add:

NEVER, EVER write anything that you might regret later. As I have been advised here, the “Preview” button is your best friend.

No editor dared to pull his ear and advise him to, perhaps, reread what he wrote and change his message? Even Britney’s mom delayed her book at the last minute to change things after her daughter got pregnant.

As far as Sarah goes, she was battered, deep fried and smothered in every single media outlet out there. Ignorance was such that when she gave her press conference at the Rep. convention, a reporter asked her about that one being the first press conference that she has ever given. Sarah, slammed that one down because she has given many in AK.

Rush, please roast him again…

SaintOlaf on November 19, 2008 at 5:55 PM

Talk about having your head up your a$$. There were only 112 – 115 million votes cast in the general. If the Huck was so great, why did COB (Cranky Old Bastard) win the primary?

I’ll answer that question. Huckabigot split the vote between Mitt and COB. Thanks alot idiot.

It is my opinion that he would do himself a great service by stifling himself. He gives republicans a bad name.

TheUnrepentantGeek on November 19, 2008 at 7:31 PM

I’ve caught parts of his show a few times. Not impressed, but it didn’t suck quite as bad as I expected. However, it doesn’t belong on a news/commentary channel like Fox News.

Maybe one of the Fox owned entertainment channels, or the WB or whatever. From what I’ve seen, the show is about what you would get if you got a young Johnny Carson to spend a moderate amount of time on superficial discussion of political news from a pseudo-conservative / populist perspective.

In his show,He has good TV presence, and he comes off as kind of likable, (unlike his biggest fans), but rather shallow understanding (much like his biggest fans).

We live in a fallen world that is permeated with evil. Human nature has not changed in 5000 years of recorded human history — and sin rivals gravitational attraction in its reliability/predictability. It should not surprise us that bad things continue to happen. Jesus Himself told us to expect trials and tribulation in this life.

My collie says:

What WOULD be strange would be if we woke up tomorrow and we found that all wars, disease, natural disasters, and death had ceased. And yet, that is precisely what God has promised will occur at the end of days.

Mike Huckabee is always saying positive things about Sarah Palin. He has a lot of respect for Sarah Palin and has defended her MANY times on his show and his blog.

SaintOlaf on November 19, 2008 at 7:54 PM

Isn’t it amazing that the one Republican who is not attacking fellow Republicans and who even gave a shoutout to George Bush for protecting America in the last 7 years from another terrorist attack is still being attacked by fellow Republicans for simply doing her job for the McCain campaign-locking down the base, enhancing McCain’s fundraising efforts and getting the base to intensify the GOTV effort. Sarah’s overzealous attention from the media was media-induced-she did not seek it. To suggest that ’she has gotten an easy ride to national prominence’ as Huckabee is now suggesting is completely absurd and preposterous-Sarah is probably the most vilified politician in America since Lincoln in the 1864 election.

Somebody tell Huck it comes down to likability:

People like Sarah Palin, who’s warm, genuine, and positive. Those are admirable qualitites and people like people who possess and reflect those qualities.

Huck, on the other hand, is petty, vindictive, sleazy, and prone to throwing tantrums and back-stabbing his fellow Republicans when things don’t go his way.

Petty, vindictive, sleazy, backstabbing, and prone to throwing tantrums, generally aren’t considered likable qualitites.

Just ask John McCain.

SuperCool on November 19, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Romney had ZERO chance of winning the election..ZERO.

He is probably one of the most hated men in America..I don’t see why this is so hard for you to understand.

Romney would have lost every single southern state. IT’S A FACT.

Romney is a very easy person to stereotype and does not seem trustworthy whatsoever..Axelrod would have had a hayday with him.

Remember that the voting public are practically brain dead zombies with an average 70 IQ..they go by impressions alone not policies.

Huck would have been able to get 100 million of those votes.

Huckabee: I wish I could have gotten an easy ride to national prominence like Sarah Palin

Glad you brought this up, AP. All Huck needed to do to get the love would have been to govern his state like a conservative – just like the Governor of Alaska!

Instead, he acted like a nitwit liberal pretending to be a Republican: tax increases, fun perks for illegal immigrants, corruption for big Arkansas employers, etc.

Huck and Palin are like a case study in what is right and what is wrong with the GOP.

Sadly, the Republicans didn’t pick the Republican nominee. Too many open primaries allowing Dems and Independents to vote for our nominee – and you end up with McCain and Huckabee as the last two men standing. One had the endorsement of the New York Times, and the other had Chuck Norris going to the bathroom with him – the media (MSM) ate it up.

The one candidate the media never looked favorably upon was Mitt Romney. Had Republicans and only Republicans been allowed to vote in the primaries it would have come down to Mitt vs Fred! and the party would have been better off.

At the very least the race against Obama would have been about the issues instead of John McCain’s POW record.

Huckabees whining is outrageous.

Well, it looks like we have found the GOP version of Joe Biden. Mike Huckabee says to stupidest crap sometimes.

If you follow his logic, Sarah Palin didn’t “pay her dues” to the GOP. She cut in line. She wasn’t chasing every television camera that would point at her and beg for TV time like all the RINO’s this year. She entered the national stage with a great big bear hug by social conservatives and some fiscal conservatives.

Mike Huckabee will always be the chubby little kid on the inside, who gets picked last for the team and complains about it for the rest of his life.

His book, the Palin bash, and his Fox show is the Obituary for the Hucksters Presidential future. Bye Bye.

The only thing keeping me blogging through this long, long winter of conservative discontent is the dream of a Huck/Palin death match in 2011 to determine who the one true “Christian leader” is.

Extra! Extra! Huck and Palin are on the same team. There is no reason that two Bible believing Christians should be fighting one another. There is ample room for the both of them. Truth is, we need more Huckabee’s and Palin’s. Christian values should dominate our government. NOTE to Mr. Huckabee and Mrs. Palin: United we stand, divided we fall. It can’t be any clearer than that!!

I am always very skeptical of people who feel they always need to remind people they are the “christian leader” of this generation. As Huckabee routinely does. I also find it deplorable that he often criticized Mitt Romney on his mormon faith. Look I’m a Christian and dont believe a word of the mormon religion, but I’m not going to criticize people for practicing that religion. The thing I absolutely LOVE about Sarah is that she doesnt need to tell people she is a christian leader. She lives her values, and it is VERY easy to see that she is a Christian by her actions.

Do as I say. not as I do. Ah, I see. I get it.

apacalyps on November 19, 2008 at 10:43 PM

I know a few Kenosha conservatives that would be happy to drive up for the occasion.

We will get Vicki McKenna out there and have a ball!

kcarpenter on November 19, 2008 at 10:07 PM

She’ll join us for the party, but won’t open carry with us. Already talked to her about it.

MadisonConservative on November 19, 2008 at 10:44 PM

I am always very skeptical of people who feel they always need to remind people they are the “christian leader” of this generation. As Huckabee routinely does.

ousoonerfan15 on November 19, 2008 at 10:42 PM

Blah, blah, blah… none of that is true. You are a liar.

apacalyps on November 19, 2008 at 10:47 PM

wow I am watching Greta now and they are showing behind the scene pics of Sarah. Did anyone just see that pic of Todd and Sarah praying before a rally. This is just what I was saying. She lives her values. Really strong in her faith. I thought that was an AWESOME picture.

ousoonerfan15 on November 19, 2008 at 10:48 PM

God, you’re an annoying little troll.

MadisonConservative on November 19, 2008 at 10:48 PM

I also find it deplorable that he often criticized Mitt Romney on his mormon faith. Look I’m a Christian and dont believe a word of the mormon religion, but I’m not going to criticize people for practicing that religion.

ousoonerfan15 on November 19, 2008 at 10:42 PM

How do you feel about a Mormon President?

apacalyps on November 19, 2008 at 10:50 PM

How did people feel about JFK at first?? He was a catholic, but didnt govern through his faith. I have a strong feeling that Mitt would have been a good president who also would not have governed through his faith.

ousoonerfan15 on November 19, 2008 at 10:50 PM

none of that is true. You are a liar.

apacalyps on November 19, 2008 at 10:47 PM

Oh, and apacalyps? Watch the first damned ad on this link. Huckabee’s own ad, calling himself “Christian Leader”.

So, no. You are a liar. Feel free to disprove his own damn words.

MadisonConservative on November 19, 2008 at 10:51 PM

If you don’t understand that the little posts that you and I place here are not the same as Presidential candidates spouting visceral judo chops on Live debates & Television interviews than you should seek help. No really. You should talk to someone. Your perception of reality……not so good.

I’ve seen that ad several times and Mike was identifying himself as a Christian. He was not calling himself the leader of all Christians. Do you think I would go for that? C’mon, you guys are so pathetic.

So that’s why the ad said in large, capital letters:

CHRISTIAN LEADER

Denial is a stinky cologne.

Oh I see. Huckabee should just put a Jesus Fish on his forehead, that way he won’t have to say it outloud and all. Did you notice how people don’t have to wonder if Governor Sarah Palin is a Christian? It’s because she LIVES HER VALUES AND DOESN’T NEED TO JUSTIFY THEM TO ANYONE.

apacalyps, you’re so much fun. Were this 400 years ago, you’d be calling me a witch for pointing out what a lying little hypocrite you are.

You still haven’t shown the balls to own up to the fact that Huckabee called himself a CHRISTIAN LEADER in his own television ad, someone pointed it out, and you called them a liar for it. You slandered that person either out of ignorance or dishonesty. If you haven’t the integrity to admit you were wrong, guess what pal, whatever god you have knows.

As I said, but you apparently don’t want to listen to… Mike was identifying himself as a Christian. That’s why he said, “We (Christians) believe in some things, we stand by those things, we live and die by those things.” Stop making stuff up. Get over it, already. Duh.

None of the other candidates had to put on airs and identify themselves as Christian Leaders in their ads. Of course, none of the others were using their faith as a wedge issue to beat a Mormon.

I’m still trying to figure that one out. I’m pretty sure you’re a reprobate though.

apacalyps on November 19, 2008 at 11:12 PM

The Huckster reminds me of the 1930’s con men that were selling rain during the dust bowl.

Can this man just shut up? No one cares and no one is listening.

Hatred for Huckabee reveals RINOs and Elitist Country Club Republicans for what they are—NOT conservatives.

Hot Air proves it.

Pro God, Pro Gun, pro small Govt CONSERVATIVES give the guy a hearing, just like Palin.

We dont let the medias version or view of them define them for us, but their records.

Palin would NOT have survived the primaries and you know it. Rudy and Romney would’ve ate her lunch.

It was better she was thrown in like she was, just like even Huck said.

Now she has time to get some chops, creed and more credentials for 2012.
The Rinos will get them a candidate and try to smear her (as they alreay have in McCains camp) but maybe after a few yrs of OBam Bam, enough REAL conservatives will stand up and say enough is enough.

We want a CONSERVATIVE-social and fiscal and will setlle for nothing less.

The voice of one crying in the wilderness…..

John The Baptist on November 19, 2008 at 11:20 PM

Now I’ve heard everything. I’ve lived in Arkansas through many a Governor’s term, and I can’t think of many who were as ineffective as the Huckster.

Seriously, he was a joke. On his inaugeration day the Dems locked him out of the governor’s office in the state capitol – nailed his door shut – and wouldn’t let him in until he agreed to make enormous and wholly unnecessary concessions, including the appointment of one of the most racist and spiteful affirmative-action judges I have yet to see. As a lifelong Republican, I was not at all happy with either his policies or appointments. I was actually glad to have a Democrat recently take office as governor instead of him; now the state government is at least effective again, and political appointees, although more liberal than I would like, are not laughably incompetent.

Huckabee is a good talker, he’s a good Christian minister, but he is an inept, ineffective, and indecisive politician. He would be a disaster as president. And if the press hadn’t been giving him the “free ride” he thinks he is owed, you would have heard all this stuff before.

Bah!

thecountofincognito on November 19, 2008 at 11:11 PM

I’m glad he identifies himself as a Christian. Huckabee is a man of faith and is a Christian leader, and he is not a person to hide his faith. He wears it openly and honestly. But that doesn’t make his candidacy is a religious discussion. Huckabee’ candidacy is about:

-Protecting the 2nd Amendment.
-Fighting the war on terror.
-Deealing with Iran
-Protecting Israel
-Protecting traditional marriage.
-Introducing a plan to secure the border without amnesty
-Abolishing the IRS and institute the Fair Tax
-Cutting taxes and cut spending.
-He took the no new tax pledge.
-He is a life-long committed pro-life conservative.

Which one of those is bad?

Of course, none of the others were using their faith as a wedge issue to beat a Mormon.

You are such a HYPROCRITE. Romney was calling himself a Christian which is a LIE!!! The Mormons have a different god than Christians do. Just because somebody says the word “god” does not mean they are talking about the same person that is the God of the Bible. HOW COME YOU DIDN’T CALL HIM OUT FOR BEING A PHONY CHRISTIAN!?
