Huckabee: I wish I could have gotten an easy ride to national prominence like Sarah Palin

posted at 5:27 pm on November 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

He’s not saying it critically, mind you. Since when has Huck ever been critical of a rival, overtly or otherwise?

Huckabee had some interesting observations about Sarah Palin, a potential 2012 opponent, suggesting that she didn’t earn her spurs and was more appealing to the base of the party because she hadn’t been scrutinized in the primary.

“What John McCain did for her was to give her the capacity to sort of leapfrog over the process and get right to the center stage,” he said of the GOP’s vice presidential nominee.

Unlike those, he added, who had competed in the Republican primary.

“She didn’t have to get bloodied like us. Few people on that stage didn’t get bloodied.”

He did allow, though, that she did get bloodied — “but not by the people Republicans care about, you guys.”

Fearing that this lament might sound a tad resentful, he went on to stress that he was merely envious, nothing more. Oh, and he also reminded McCain that he blew the race by not opposing the bailout and probably would have lost the nomination to Huck himself if so many state primaries hadn’t been winner take all.

Exit admission: The only thing keeping me blogging through this long, long winter of conservative discontent is the dream of a Huck/Palin death match in 2011 to determine who the one true “Christian leader” is. Followed, of course, by 15 Kathleen Parker columns proclaiming the end of conservatism, and then 15 more describing the resulting hate mail. (Just kidding. She’ll have renounced the right long before then.)

Huckabee sees Palin as a threat to his chances in 2011 primaries. So he has to bring her down a couple of notches to get even more negative attention directed to her.

The blooding she had from the MSM in three short months was more than Huckabee ever endured in his run for the presidency.

I like Huckabee. I think he has a great personality on screen, but this kind of attack with a smile on his face is quite irritating.

jencab on November 19, 2008 at 6:02 PM

Exaggerate much? You sound a tad unhinged.

Did you know Mike Huckabee was an intolerable religious bigot?

Huck, you are irrelevant. I would call you a toad, but it would be a slam on all the toads.

Ohhhhhhhh….that’s right…..that guy that LOST the Repub nomination.

SaintOlaf on November 19, 2008 at 5:36 PM

Most everyone knew Huckabee was a phony long before this latest incarnation where he opened his cavernous gaping a-hole to expose his festering plaque caked colon.

jencab on November 19, 2008 at 6:02 PM

Huckabee is not saying anything negative about palin.

Huck always has only positive things to say about her.

This is just another smear job taking Huck out of context by AP.

BTW Huck is not running for President.

He has learned that the presidential selection process is not democratic and has gotten himself a television show where he will be able to affect more positive change.

Say what you want about Huck but the fact is, the man has good intentions and wants to make a positive difference in this culture and in this country.

Watch his TV show(It’s probably the best show on the air in years)…and relax.

SaintOlaf on November 19, 2008 at 6:08 PM

I wonder…are we going to get a new attack on Sarah Palin from now till the next election cycle..?

Lord help us…

Dritanian on November 19, 2008 at 5:50 PM

That does seem to be the trend, doesn’t it? Just today we have news that some Alaskan citizen has lodged an “ethics complaint” against her because she gave her interview with Greta Van Susteren in her Anchorage governor’s office. The horrors! Imagine, being interviewed in your office?! What next — a used tanning bed in the governor’s mansion?

“…he went on to stress that he was merely envious, nothing more.”

Envy?

Isn’t that one of the 7 deadly sins? Does he really need anything more than that? Perhaps when he lost weight he traded gluttony for envy. Either way dead is dead.

It’s okay though, there is still time to repent. However, if he spends too much of that time capaigning against those he is envious of he may waste his opportunity.

She was the VP candidate, not the top of the ticket. McCain wasn’t obligated to choose one of his rivals in the primaries. This is just prima donna whining by a wannbe.

If it comes down to Palin vs Huckabee, he’ll know what real “bloodying” is.

ddrintn on November 19, 2008 at 6:16 PM

Whatever..you bailout neocons have destroyed the republican party.
I still don’t think you even realize that yet.

You don’t have a chance of winning another election ever.

Quit your anti-Christian bigotry and get out of the way while the real patriots such as Huck and the HuckPac republicans take back this country from the socialists.

SaintOlaf on November 19, 2008 at 5:44 PM

Why must you view everything thhrough the lens of Christian vs non-Christian? Not one commenter said anything derrogatory about Christianity. Not one. We said plenty of critical words about Huckabee though and deservedly so. The man is slime. Christianity is fine.

The fact is, Huckabee had no business staying in the race as long as he did and politically I hope he pays for his sins. He only appealed to a small segment of the population. He was despised by the vast majority of Republican voters. There are only two possible reasons for why he stayed in the race as long as he did, ego or spite. He strikes me as a very bitter man. There is a slimy evil about him. I’m leaning towards spite.

Zetterson on November 19, 2008 at 6:17 PM

Allah,

Sarah Palin is not competing to be a Christian leader. She just happens to be a Christian; she doesn’t use it as a marketing tool. She’s like Reagan not like Robertson.

gatorgirl on November 19, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Okay, I’ll give it a shot.

I think Huckabee’s remarks are unfair, and sort of beside the point. No one ever rated a vice-president by mandatory trench duty in the primaries, and this year was no exception. In lieu of any other merits (please note that caveat), all that losing in the primaries proves, is that you are… well, a loser.

In some respects, Huckabee was a good candidate. But he proved ineffective in certain areas, such as immigration. Not that McCain was any better, but he had other (for want of a better term) advantages. Palin’s success was with the party base, and in being comfortable in her own skin. That and the lessons she learned from this campaign (as long as we’re touting such experience) will help her prospects in the future, provided she stays on message, and does her homework.

Being relatively inexperienced, in and of itself, wasn’t much of a liability this year. If you don’t believe me, look at who won.

manwithblackhat on November 19, 2008 at 6:17 PM

The only thing keeping me blogging through this long, long winter of conservative discontent is the dream of a Huck/Palin death match in 2011 to determine who the one true “Christian leader” is.

Like it or not, Mr. AllahPundit, Barack Obama is God’s chosen leader for America. Voici:

1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Romans Chapter 13 (NIV)

Why must you view everything thhrough the lens of Christian vs non-Christian?

How could it not be?

It’s REALITY!

The armies of the Beast have consistently been warring against the followers of the Way for 2,000 years.

Someone must not have told you of the true history of Christianity.

50 million Armenian Orthodox Christians have been marytered over the course of several hundred years.

Have you ever heard about that?

70 MILLION ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS HAVE BEEN MARTYRED BY THE SOVIETS DURING THE 70 YEARS OF COMMUNIST RULE.

Have you ever heard of that?

Untold millions or billions of Christians have been maryred over the last 2,000 years simply because they would not renounce Christianity.

It will happen here in America too.

It’s only a matter of time.

SaintOlaf on November 19, 2008 at 6:28 PM

Any EASY ride?

Huck must live in a different universe, given to inhuman assaults she and her family endured with grace and charm.

The Christian candidate?

Sarah just lives it, and makes Huck look so very small in the process. Sanford, Palin and others will be in the mix based on how they govern, not where they goes to church.

Huck finds so many ways to be an unlikeable person, I doubt he will do much on a national level.

robertnyc212 on November 19, 2008 at 6:31 PM

Interesting. I would not vote for Huckabee unless the alternative were as bad as Obama (I would have even voted for Hillary against him, if that were my only viable choice). I have many things against him as a candidate and as a possible President. Given that, though, his show on FNC is quite good. I assume a Bill Clinton show would be very interesting as well, and I would avoid voting completely before I would vote for him. TV hosts don’t need to be good at governing.

First impressions…

Huckabee is a player today and has the hearts of a lot of evangelicals and social conservatives.

He is a mostly reliably conservative, and has a proven track record, certainly as much as Rudy or Romney who we were also relatively happy about despite their squishiness.

He was also, flat out, the best communicator on the primary scene, bar none.

Now he has some big negatives… he has a definite petty mean streak and penchant for cheap shots against a candidates wealth, upbringing, religion, etc. and he’s a big gov’t Bush-type conservative nanny-stater, but too damn bad.

Deal with it. Hate him or love him, he’s got a future and we need him. Not saying I’d have him as the nominee, but we gotta take the talent as it is and use it. The bench ain’t that deep to begin with folks.

You misunderstand my mangy mutt. He’s NOT suggesting that Christians should refrain from participating in politics. Collie and I are agreed that we have an obligation (as citizens) to vote and to participate in campaigning, fund-raising, etceteras. Some Christians should even consider running for office (but not without some serious soul searching and prayer).

My collie says:

It is AllahPundit’s notion of a “Christian leader” that we find objectionable. There are Christians and there are political leaders. Some political leaders happen to be Christians. That’s as far as it goes. Mixing politics and God along the lines of theocratic rule however should be viewed as an anathema. If we have not learned that by now, then we have learned NOTHING from history. God rules in Heaven and in the hearts of some men. The Prince of the Power of the Air rules here on this earth. As long as we exist in temporal (organic) form, we should not kid ourselves into thinking otherwise (that things can somehow be different). The idea that men can somehow build utopia on earth (through Christianity, or any other means) is one of the most dangerous ideas that Satan has ever foisted upon us. God Himself will end Satan’s rule here on earth. In the meantime, we Christians have plenty to do in our assigned work of spreading the Gospel.

“As a lifelong Republican evangelical, I find Sarah Palin to be an utterly repugnant cretin.” –astroturfer

ddrintn on November 19, 2008 at 6:48 PM

He’s not saying it critically, mind you

Cmon AP, you have a misleading headline and then this little disclaimer. Yes, you are right he didn’t mean it in a critical way and I believe he is smart enough to know that he has no chance if Palin and Jindal are in play in 2012.

Its time all of us stop covering about Huckabee in Hotair. Let him do or say whateva.. This is just another ploy for AP and others in hotair to generate website hits. You know it.

I am a wait and see person, I have always preferred governors as president and we have a really fine crop. I want to see what and how they do, not listen to a bunch of tripe. Show me a conservative.

The Huckabee/Lou Dobson/Pat Robertson contingent? Huh?

kcewa on November 19, 2008 at 6:53 PM

IMHO, Huckabee is just another RINO POS who is much like McCain politically sans the benefit of having Sarah-cuda at his side.

Any so-called republicans who work to throw her under the bus are no different from those who did the same to Newt, which in turn began the fall of the once reputable, and honorable GOP. Any real change will exclude these damn fools, or fail miserably.

DannoJyd on November 19, 2008 at 6:54 PM

The only way to protect ourselves as Christians is to vote only for Laity members that run for office.

What is so hard to understand about this?

Most of the large scale martyrdom of Christians has occured in countries with a majority Christian population.(Russia,Armenia,Constantinople etc.)

Frankly America deserves Barack Hussein Obama and the destruction that is coming..

SaintOlaf on November 19, 2008 at 6:55 PM

You know what the irony is here?

If it weren’t for the Huckster, we wouldn’t know who Sarah Palin is. At least… I wouldn’t.

I anticipated this response. I haven’t got a good answer for you except that I am delighted that Goerge Washington and the founding fathers ignored Romans 13 and threw off King George III.

My collie says:

The thing that we need to be reminded about is that God frequently allows bad things to happen to good people — thus, American Christians are now ruled (instead of served) by Barack Obama. It is an example of the oldest and most debated theological issues in the Bible (going back to the book of Job, which many scholars believe to be the oldest book in the Bible). God uses suffering, pain, tragedy, and calamity to refine us. It’s tough love, but sometimes it is the only way to get through to us, because we are SO hard headed.

Personally, I believe that the election of Barack Obama is a calamity that was uniquely designed by God to deal harshly with AllahPundit. What do you think?

Huck has made his career at selling Jesus. And thers nothing wrong with that but Sarah has made a life at living Jesus. He wears his on his sleave as a pastor typically would. Sarah uses her faith for guide her descisions.

Allah do you not see a difference?

If Huckabee keeps giving us all these opportunities to make mockery of him every time he opens his mouth, these next four years will fly by!

To be honest, the whinning and blame throwing like this is what the GOP needs to get away from, not move toward. The GOP needs to start offering alternatives, not excuses as to why the failed, or screaming “not fair” when someone else gets what they want.

Palin had a history of fighting corruption, and in her own state. That fit the theme that Mcain was trying to produce. But even more so, he saw the fact that she was an actual conservative (something that I dispute either huck or mit can claim with great quantity), and would inspire his base.

Going with Mit or Huck had the potential to cause division similar to what happened with the PUMAs when Hillary got bumped. Choosing one could have been an afront to the other. All in all though, Palin’s rise to fame wasn’t so much her flamboyance, charisma, religion, and aggressive conservative attitude as much as it was all that in comparison to Mcain’s “lack of”. All of that, however, did keep her on the spot and is continuing her forward. Her addition to the ticket was a blindside surprise for conservatives, and one alot of us enjoyed.

All that being said, I would have rather seen Romney or Fred on the ticket in the number 1 spot. Though I did like the reformist spirit of Mcain, he was not a true conservative; a fact he did little to try to hide.

Cindy Munford on November 19, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Exit admission: The only thing keeping me blogging through this long, long winter of conservative discontent is the dream of a Huck/Palin death match in 2011 to determine who the one true “Christian leader” is. Followed, of course, by 15 Kathleen Parker columns proclaiming the end of conservatism, and then 15 more describing the resulting hate mail. (Just kidding. She’ll have renounced the right long before then.)

ROFL!

ProudPalinFan on November 19, 2008 at 7:04 PM

Please folks don’t equate Romney and Huckelberry. Romney is light years ahead of the Huckster in brain power, economic sense and political solutions, its not even close.
If this anti-mormon bigot would not have been flying wingman for McLame we would not have been stuck with an old, inarticulate, not terribly bright, Democrat Lite buffoon for our nominee.
Sadly, I fear there are enough anti-Mormon bigots to make Romney unelectable thus:
