Huckabee: I wish I could have gotten an easy ride to national prominence like Sarah Palin

posted at 5:27 pm on November 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

He’s not saying it critically, mind you. Since when has Huck ever been critical of a rival, overtly or otherwise?

Huckabee had some interesting observations about Sarah Palin, a potential 2012 opponent, suggesting that she didn’t earn her spurs and was more appealing to the base of the party because she hadn’t been scrutinized in the primary.

“What John McCain did for her was to give her the capacity to sort of leapfrog over the process and get right to the center stage,” he said of the GOP’s vice presidential nominee.

Unlike those, he added, who had competed in the Republican primary.

“She didn’t have to get bloodied like us. Few people on that stage didn’t get bloodied.”

He did allow, though, that she did get bloodied — “but not by the people Republicans care about, you guys.”

Fearing that this lament might sound a tad resentful, he went on to stress that he was merely envious, nothing more. Oh, and he also reminded McCain that he blew the race by not opposing the bailout and probably would have lost the nomination to Huck himself if so many state primaries hadn’t been winner take all.

Exit admission: The only thing keeping me blogging through this long, long winter of conservative discontent is the dream of a Huck/Palin death match in 2011 to determine who the one true “Christian leader” is. Followed, of course, by 15 Kathleen Parker columns proclaiming the end of conservatism, and then 15 more describing the resulting hate mail. (Just kidding. She’ll have renounced the right long before then.)

Oh Lord! That was better left unsaid.

Huck’s first debate performance was the only thing that gave him any national prominence in the first place. It was downhill after that.

lorien1973 on November 19, 2008 at 5:30 PM

I think Huck might secretly being saying these things to deliberately piss people off and generate buzz for his show.

HornetSting on November 19, 2008 at 5:32 PM

Who knew who Huck was before he won the Iowa primary? Didn’t that kind of give him national prominence? If he hadn’t won that first primary I don’t think we’d still be talking about him. He became a media darling overnight.

El_Terrible on November 19, 2008 at 5:33 PM

Fearing that this lament might sound a tad resentful, he went on to stress that he was merely envious, nothing more.

Ok, so he committed one of the seven deadly sins, no?

Knucklehead on November 19, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Huck’s place of worship must be named ‘First Church of the Petty, Small & Resentful’. The man shows no generosity of spirit, no grace in defeat. Another thing, too: it’s unfair, I think, to cast Palin as the ‘Christian Leader’ candidate for religious conservatives. I would guess her faith is part of her, as it is with many of us, and informs her stance on many issues, but I can’t see her going around currying favor on the basis of that faith. On the other hand, I can very easily imagine Huckabee doing just that for the simple reason I have seen him do that.

malan89 on November 19, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Someone needs to go ahead and let the secret out. Huckabee had his stomach stapled. No way he lost as much weight as he did the old fashioned way. Maybe that would shut him up, if only for a day or two.

Sue on November 19, 2008 at 5:39 PM

Huckabee cost Romney the nomination. By staying in, he hurt Mitt’s chances agaist McCain. In a three way race, Huck divided the base and those who were more moderate voted for McCain. Romney would have won the election. He would have gone after Obama on Wright, Ayers and the rest. He knows what to do economically. McCain nor Obama do.

For the zillionth time, Palin did not run as a “Christian leader,” she ran as a reformer. Huck is the one who touts his preacher creds. That’s why one appeals to a much broader segment of the party than the other one does.

Rasmussen Poll: Sarah Palin has a 91% favorable rating among Republicans. When asked who they would support for the 2012 nomination, Sarah trounced the competition with 64%. The Huckster got 12%.

The more I see of Huckabee, the more I dislike him. I would be suprised if he got into double digits in any primary in 2012 (Except maybe Arkansas). He is just a loser.

Romney would have lost every single southern state. IT’S A FACT.

Romney is a very easy person to stereotype and does not seem trustworthy whatsoever..Axelrod would have had a hayday with him.

Huck on the other hand is a very likeable guy is funny and is trusted by republican and democrat alike.

Remember that the voting public are practically brain dead zombies with an average 70 IQ..they go by impressions alone not policies.

I’m running for President in 2012. It’s official.

Just to mess up the Huck/Palin deathmatch.

Imagine this: The primary stage. Huck and Palin at podiums, arguing over who’s got the credentials. Suddenly a masked figure comes out from behind the curtain and hits Huck with a folding chair, knocking him out. The masked figure gives Palin a hug, then suplexes her. You can just hear Chris Wallace:

“Now, Governor Huckabee, are you seriously stating that Governor Palin doesn’t have– OH MY GOD! Governor Huckabee’s been knocked out with a folding chair! Some masked figure– and now the masked figure is hugging Palin! It was a huge set up for the GOP Nomination belt. But wait, the masked figure just bodyslammed Governor Palin! Who is that masked figure? Why, it’s Doc! Doc from the Autopsy! And he’s pouring Budweiser over the two governors! He is just too one-dimensional: Baptist vote and some other Evangelicals. He is not an all-round conservative like HOPEFULLY Palin and Jindal. The jury is still out on Mitt. Give him some time to get our trust, which will be tougher for him than Palin studying up on national issues.
