Good news: Canadian school deputizes RA’s to police students for political incorrectness
posted at 3:45 pm on November 19, 2008 by Allahpundit
A curveball from Weasel Zippers. I’m stunned. Since when do Canadians overreact to thoughtcrimes?
And on a university campus, no less.
I love the name: Facilitators. Bureaucratic, innocuous, yet vaguely menacing. Much like that Star Chamber office Ezra Levant was interviewed in.
Students at Queen’s University who sprinkle their dialogue with an assortment of “homo” or “retarded” could find out the hard way that not everyone finds their remarks acceptable.
The Kingston university has hired student facilitators to step in when they overhear homophobic slurs, remarks bashing women or racially tinged insults, along with an array of other language that could be deemed offensive…
“If people are having a conversation with offensive content and they’re doing it loud enough for a third person to hear it … it’s not private,” said Jason Laker, dean of student affairs at Queen’s…
“Having a program like this in place could stifle public discussion if people are worried their private conversations are being monitored,” said Angela Hickman, managing editor of the Queen’s Journal, a campus newspaper. “For a lot of people, their opinions get formed in conversations and so stifling that is dangerous.”
And if students feel uncomfortable about a “facilitator” butting in and getting in their face? “I would say it’s a beneficial tension,” says Laker. Provocative exit question: Isn’t this just the university’s version of blog comment moderation? Only now does the terrible possibility occur to me: Dude, am I O’Brien?

Will the be filtering all possibly insulting things or just the acceptable PC ones?
Will the overweight, underheight, super tall and bean pole skinny be protected?
What about white folks? Is it o.k. to say they can’t jump/dance/sing? Or are we going to protect their feelings too?
If someone says, “F-ing Mormon Nazis”, will they be ‘facilitated’? If so, will it be because Canadians are worried about insulting Mormons or worried about offending Nazis?
If they heard my conversation with my friend yesterday where I said, “Boys are so dumb!” would that get me on their radar?
I love Mountain Dew and feel bad when people say it tastes like crap…..can I be protected from opinions on products and services as well or does it only extend to types of people?
They’re really going to need to make a handbook of acceptable opinions to make sure people don’t get in trouble.

Universities pride themselves as being bastions of free speech. They can’t have both.
As an additional issue, this just shows that western education is in the final stages of liberal infestation. I don’t want 95% of educated individuals becoming hedonistic, arrogant politically liberal atheists/liberal christians(redundant, I know). I already feel pretty lonely when my english professor said McCain suggested Obama shouldn’t be president because he looks different and the rest of my class either nods or smirks approvingly.

For years, the over-riding emphasis of frosh week planning for my Canadian university’s engineering-centred (though all-inclusive) frosh week has centred around how allow the new students to have fun without condoning explicitly offensive behaviour. It has become more and more difficult each year.
When I started at this university (Pre-9/11), we were taught that there were humorous stereotypes for every faculty (including our own) that were emphatically not true in the least, but were still acceptable to speak about.
I’ve since learned that any humorous comments during frosh week were likely to run awry of the least humorous people on the planet. Every year, the limitations on this frosh week were restricted more and more. It’s particularly sad that my university has the longest running independent engineering-oriented frosh week in Canada (if not North America), but that it’s under threat by the thought police of the university… :-S
There is nothing worse than cracking a joke on a canadian campus and having someone decide that it’s offensive to them, regardless of their race, religion, background, or age. I will gladly suffer a wide variety of jokes because I understand that they are exactly that – jokes in good faith. Anyone who decides that they will make fun of militant muslims or feminists will find that you have no free speech. You will suffer greatly and may or may not be expelled, depending on the mood of the university senate.
It’s a sad state of affairs, and I highly recommend anyone who thinks that free speech is alive outside of the USA to look up Ezra Levant and Mark Steyn and their respective encounters with the law up here…
The Human Rights Tribunals is the main reason that I would rather renounce my Canadian citizenship and become and American… My uncle (who has never regretted serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War) is probably the soundest voice on how badly things have gone in Canada since he left shortly before our socialized health care.
God bless America.

Canada scares the crap out of me.
Once I read a book called “THEM: Adventures with Extremists.” One chapter was about a British man named David Icke. This guy is totally convinced that Earth is being taken over by extraterrestrial, shape-shifting lizards in human form, which include George W. Bush [*gasp*], Princess Diana, and Boxcar Willie. He lives in Canada now, where is is constantly harassed and many of his books are banned. Why? Because he is crazy? No. Evidently, according to the Canadian Politburo, “reptilian humanoid” is the new code-word for “Jew.”
I don’t believe in “reptilian humanoids” but I’ll stand up for his rights just as much as I would for mine. These people looking under rocks for racism are just as crazy and paranoid as David Icke.

Inalienable Rights of Citizenry – Non-existent – Only the Queen fully and Titled nobles enjoy most of these rights.

Free speech is not enshrined in Canada, as it is the states. Here, even comedians can be brought before Human Rights tribunals. Having a website that speaks poorly of islam, for example, like jihadwatch, is a crime in Canada. Canadian liberals codified a carte blanch legislation years ago that basically says that if someone, and they will determine who that is, has said something derogatory about race, color, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation that person has committed a crime against the state. They call it “promoting hatred” against an “identifiable group”. In other words, hate is now a crime in Canada if expressed. It is such a insanely nebulous idea, even more vague in its definition, that to use it in a legal sense blasphemes all we understand about criminal jurisprudence. But by making it so nebulous, that can apply it whenever, and wherever, they desire.

Is it terrorism if you make the people in the smoke filled rooms…. behind the closed doors…. that line the halls of power… to fear, not death or pain from the pirate, but that the pirate / terrorist may not allow them to possess those things with which they bargain for their own power and wealth.
There are pirates; there are Pirates. And some are called, (and call themselves) pirates, who actually only keep the Looters from looting the ones that innovate, work and earn.
I’m pretty sure the ranks of those sort of Pirates are, in the very near future, going to swell to much greater numbers than those off the coast of Africa or on Wall Street.

JellyToast on November 20, 2008 at 8:00 AM
Ahem, I am a recovering Canadian, and am now a proud pistol packing American citizen. Education… Canada’s public school’s finest.
The Prime Minister is appointed by the Queen. The Queen often consults Parliament as to who they would like to see as PM, and tradition dictates that this person be the leader of the dominant party. This is only a tradition and is not codified in any Canadian law. The PM serves at the pleasure of the Queen. I know this is a bitter pill for Canucks to swallow but it is true.
When Canadians go to the election booth, the only federal position they vote on is for their MP (Congressman). The PM does not appear on the ballot. So before any Canadians insult any Americans over perceived value of their respective educations, show me a ballot with the PM on it.
No ballot, no democracy.
BTW, wrong on 11 of 13? BS, it’s all absolutely true and you are shocked as to how ignorant you actually are.
