Video: How Obama Got Elected; Update: Zogby confirms poll, denies “push polling”

posted at 7:57 am on November 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

I’m sure we’ll all be linking to this video today. John Ziegler interviews Obama voters to gauge their knowledge of various issues that came up during the election, and gets very … entertaining results.  His new website, How Obama Got Elected, marries this with a more disturbing report from Zogby that emphasizes a great deal of ignorance in the vote:

Let’s start with Zogby’s numbers.  The poll surveyed over 500 self-professed Obama voters and has an MOE of 4.4%, with 55% having a college degree and over 90% having a high-school diploma.  It asked 12 multiple-choice questions; only 2.4% got at least 11 correct. Only .5% got all them correct.

  • 57.4 could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by guessing)
  • 81.8 could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by guessing)
  • 82.6 could NOT correctly say that Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by guessing)
  • 88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by guessing)
  • 56.1 % could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by guessing). And yet…..
  • Only 13.7% failed to identify Palin as the person their party spent $150,000 in clothes on
  • Only 6.2% failed to identify Palin as the one with a pregnant teenage daughter
  • And 86.9 % thought that Palin said that she could see Russia from her “house,” even though that was Tina Fey who said that!!

On the last point, though, Palin was the only candidate from Alaska.  Palin did state that one could see Russia from the state as an answer to an interview question about her foreign-policy credentials.  I don’t believe that the survey gave Fey as a choice, so Palin would have been the obvious answer from those provided.

However, the rest of these results show the abysmal state of media coverage of Barack Obama.  It’s not that the voters couldn’t absorb data provided to them by the Tanning Bed Media; these voters quite obviously learned plenty about Sarah Palin.  In the video, the subjects demonstrate that by assigning every stupid thing said on the campaign trail to Palin whether she said it or not.  Meanwhile, no one can figure out what Barack Obama said, how he conducted his campaign, or his political history.

As for the video, without the Zogby poll, it would be hilarious but without context.  Anyone can find fools for “man on the street” interviews; Jay Leno does it as a regular staple for the Tonight Show.  Zogby’s poll shows that Ziegler’s video is no anomaly.  Wait for the end, where the ignorant endorse their favorite media outlets, which is the real highlight of this project.

Update: Zogby confirms Ziegler’s numbers, and barks back at accusations of push-polling:

“We stand by the results our survey work on behalf of John Ziegler, as we stand by all of our work. We reject the notion that this was a push poll because it very simply wasn’t. It was a legitimate effort to test the knowledge of voters who cast ballots for Barack Obama in the Nov. 4 election. Push polls are a malicious effort to sway public opinion one way or the other, while message and knowledge testing is quite another effort of public opinion research that is legitimate inquiry and has value in the public square. In this case, the respondents were given a full range of responses and were not pressured or influenced to respond in one way or another. This poll was not designed to hurt anyone, which is obvious as it was conducted after the election. The client is free to draw his own conclusions about the research, as are bloggers and other members of society. But Zogby International is a neutral party in this matter. We were hired to test public opinion on a particular subject and with no ax to grind, that’s exactly what we did. We don’t have to agree or disagree with the questions, we simply ask them and provide the client with a fair and accurate set of data reflecting public opinion.” – John Zogby

I know some people wanted to see a link to confirm Zogby’s work, and here it is.

lodge on November 18, 2008 at 8:05 AM

The Left in America has been taken over by the marxists. The radicals long ago gained control of the Democrat Party and now they have captured Congress, the White House, and a majority of State legislatures and governorships. The groundwork for this political takeover was laid by marxists who inserted themselves into positions of power in the universities, the schools, the entertainment industry, the news media, and the government.
The marxists have used the influence over our society in these positions to undermine, weaken, and erode the foundational institutions of our civilization. They have attacked the traditional family, turned the courts into a sick joke, brought our popular culture down into the gutter, used journalism to rig elections and push their agenda, and turned our schools into left wing indoctrination centers.
The marxists have indeed pursued many strategies for breaking down American society in order to build it back up as they see fit. But perhaps the two most effective of these have been 1) Attacking religious faith (especially Christianity) and 2) Using political correctness and speech codes to control our language.
G.K. Chesterton famously said, “When people stop believing in God, they don’t believe in nothing, they believe in anything”. Our culture has become more and more secular, more and more atheistic, and more and more hostile to people of faith. Marxism is an expressly and fundamentally atheistic creed. But human beings have a built in need to believe in something greater than themselves. So liberalism, secular humanism, radical environmentalism, and marxism become their religion.
It has also been said that if you control people’s language you control their thought. The marxists have succeeded in corrupting our language. Words no longer have meaning. Marxists change the language, they play with the meaning of words. Does the phrase “new speak” ring any bells? Liberal doesn’t mean liberal anymore and now they’re trying to drop liberal and move to progressive. And all this results in people getting confused and simply rejecting all labels. Talk to young people. They think calling someone a liberal or conservative is like using a racial epithet. That’s why Obama’s empty rhetoric works. For far too many Americans ALL the words are meaningless. It’s ALL empty rhetoric. They don’t care about the lyrics, they just want to hear the music.
The election of Barack Hussein Obama was not political. It was cultural. This is the end result of years and years of dumbing down American education, feminizing boys, infantilizing adults, extending adolescence into the 30′s, and putting a tremendous focus on entertainment and distractions above all else. We have gotten soft. We value style over substance. Our Presidential election is now American Idol: White House Edition.

D0WNT0WN on November 18, 2008 at 8:06 AM

This also shows why McCain was in trouble from the start. How do you explain to the voters the dangers of a White House and Congress controlled by the same parties when voters have no idea which party controls Congress? And if they don’t know who Frank is, the Fannie Mae argument is probably over their head as well.

LastRick on November 18, 2008 at 8:08 AM

Yeah, that says it all…when talking to my neighbors who voted for Obama, just about the same results.

Could it be that people remember what they hear when it is funny or possibly scandalous? And that soap operas, reality shows, and the popular media as a whole have exercised and strengthened this particular faculty?

njcommuter on November 18, 2008 at 8:10 AM

YES WE IZ!!

Now you know why the center-right distrusts not only the media, but also the public education system.

Both combine throughout a young person’s lifetime and developmental stages to make the populace STUPIDER than any that has preceded it in recent history.

Then, when they’re sufficiently stupid, they vote Democrat.

Whenever some leftik goes on and on about the lack of education of neoconz or whatevs, send them this video and ask them to explain the ignorance of their fellow voters.

Congratulations, America. THIS WAS YOUR LIFE.

The opposition party won by explaining to people how miserable they are. And he was new and fresh. The out of power party can do the same in 2008, definitely by 2012. Obama could have won in 2004 I’m afraid to say.

Ignorance is what the MSM counted on. They aimed their coverage at the people represented in the video. Because of that audience, they did not have to be jounalists, only sycophantic entertainment reporters.

Howard Stern did such a “man on the street” piece, I think it was in Harlem. Though Howard does seem to have some issues with blacks. Beat up by black girls for his lunch money when he was a kid! Anyway, the interviews went something like this:

Q. Who do you support?
A. Obama.
Q. Why do you support Obama?
A. He seems more knowledgeable than McCain.
Q. Does his firm stance against abortion bother you?
A. No, it’s ok with me.
Q. Do you think his running mate Sarah Palin could do the job if something happens to him?
A. I think she could.
Q. How about his position against stem cell research? Is that a problem for you?
A. No, not a problem.

Paul-Cincy on November 18, 2008 at 8:15 AM

C’mon, we don’t need to know EXACTLY what Obama said on the campaign trail!! HopenChange, remember???

I had to break it to three or four people that Obama was part white, part black and part Arab. I wondered where they thought the names came from, considering they are Arab names. I also had to explain who Vladmir Putin, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Bashir Assad were. And why Russia invading Poland is a bad, bad thing.

Oh and why Russia invaded Georgia this summer.

I don’t expect that everyone be as interested in world events as I am, but come on!! That’s just pathetic.

I said this on another thread, but it bears repeating:

Most of Obambi’s voters had no clue where he stood on any issue, except maybe that he was going to “give 95% of us a tax cut.”

This election demonstrated that the Founding Fathers’ aversion to direct democracy was well-grounded. The ‘blacks’ voted for Obambi’s skin color. The rest voted for ‘change’. What a travesty!

MrLynn on November 18, 2008 at 8:20 AM

The scariest part for me: This the same media many rely on to report the news on what is going on in Iraq, Afghanistan, and so on.

Nope. I blame stupid, reality show obsessed people who couldn’t name a foreign leader if a gun was placed to their heads. I blame people who can name Britney Spears’ husband that she married in Vegas, but can’t figure out what the CRA is. I blame people stupid enough to fall for “HOPE and CHANGE” without bothering to understand what exactly is going on in the world or why other countries actually matter. I blame a media who was so obsessed with destroying Joe the Plumber that they couldn’t be bothered to proper criticize the VP and Presidential candidates from the Dems. I blame people who yelled “RACIST” everytime a legit question about Obama came up and people who were scared off by that.

I blame an electorate so seduced by a man who can’t lead a state, a Senate, or a Sunday school picnic that they can’t be bothered with critical thinking. I used to laugh at people who asked why the electorate was so stupid as to elect George Bush twice. Now I really wonder if they actually had a point.

This is what people want. I really do hope he proves me wrong and turns out to be an awesome leader. But frankly, it ain’t looking good, baby.

Since under Obambi non-taxpayers will get a ‘tax refund’, under such a rule they would be defined as ‘honorary taxpayers’, or something.

I have long argued for a Constitutional Amendment, to this effect:

No citizen receiving payments from the Federal Government, which payments are not in exchange for goods or services rendered to the Federal Government, shall be eligible to vote in any Federal election.

That video and poll are no surprise to me. I have been writing on my blog, about how the public schools, universities, the media and the arts have been deceptive, manipulative and biased.

The clearest example of this is the global warming theory. I find it amazing that an unproven theory, that defies common sense, is being taught in our schools and universities, as if it were fact.

I have a niece who is studying to be a “rocket scientist” in a liberal California university. At my first opportunity, I will ask this budding genius those twelve questions. I will be surprised if she gets many correct.

These days when I see college students, I do not admire them for their quest for knowledge. They have no wisdom. They follow a heard mentality toward whatever is considered to be cool, and in opposition to love of God, family and country.

They have been brainwashed to believe that diversity, in and of itself, is a virtue. Thus they celebrate and embrace the most negative and bizarre forms of diversity and are admired by their peers, teachers and even parent(s) for it. This is what they have been taught since they were young.

They question, reject and vilify, anything that helped make our nation, the freest, wealthiest, most benevolently powerful nation that this world has ever seen.

However, change is taking place. I see the bricks that form the foundation of this nations greatness being removed one by one. We are on the road to becoming a third rate corrupt and poor nation, like Mexico and Venezuela.

It is sad to see this happening before my very eyes. What is saddest, is that this downhill spiral from American exceptionalism to economic and spiritual bankruptcy, is being lead by today’s students and the universities that fill their heads with mush.

My brother in law could be a participant in this video and the scary part is that he is the CFO of a major software company! One of his and our main concerns is the Estate tax… a year ago, he sat at my kitchen table petrified about what we would do if/when something happens to his mother… we would owe an astronomical amount of money.. more than either of us could pay for…(long story). When my husband asked him why he wouldvote for Obama, he simply stated “he’s not a republican, they had their chance and f8cked up everything”.
I hope nothing happens to my mother in law ( I love her), but if the gov’t comes after us, I will tell him that his vote for Obama qualifies him to pay the majority of the bill………
By the way, he also claimed he is a libertarian, but agrees with the food police, etc. because “it’s for our own good”

As I have said before… the smartest people I know happen to be the dumbest!

Where do the ignorant go to remain clueless?

My bad, I assumed this was going to be a HotAir ad.

It’s shocking that Ed would latch onto a completely unscientific poll and trumpet it as a condemnation of the media. If blogs are a much better place to get news, a blog like this one should take a second and say “wait a minute, this poll is a crock, filled with push poll type questions, including one with a ‘trick’ answer, and doesn’t ask a random sample of Americans who controls Congress, offering no baseline to compare whether or not Obama voters are MORE misinformed than McCain voters, maybe it would damage my blogs credibility to post this as legitimate?”

jerrytbg on November 18, 2008 at 8:41 AM

This doesn’t surprise me. As Paul-Cincy mentioned above, Howard Stern did a similar bit before the election showing how Harlem voters had no idea what Obama’s positions were. They were voting for him strictly on race. These voters Ziegler interviewed presumably were voting based on campaign rhetoric like “hope” and “change”.

The thing that frustrates me the most is how few people knew which party controlled Congress since 2006. I hope to God that now the Dems have overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate not to mention Obama as President, these same morons realize who’s running the show.

But ultimately the point of that clip was to show what a pisspoor job the media did this election. And unless things change between now and 2010 and 2012, it’s gonna be an uphill climb for the GOP to regain power even if Obama is the 2nd coming of Hoover or Carter.

3) didn’t know or understand his policies and voted without knowledge

Any of those choices are undesirable for anyone who loves this country… yes I am saying that any of those choices are un-American… I said it, I mean it and you can kiss my a$$ or move your lazy a$$ to one of the myriad of socialist countries that already exist!

And don’t blame the media for what happened to Palin.
The GOP sprang an underexposed candidate on the electorate, and than put her in campaign purdah so there was no way she could become vetted by the electorate. It is far more important to be vetted by the electorate than by the campaign. The GOP allowed SNL and the media to define her.
Now the Fey satires are indelibly engraved on the memories of a whole generation of young voters that the GOP desperately needs. Palin got burned up before she was ready. Two months just wasn’t enough time.

I don’t think she will ever be a contender now.

If an electronic voting system came with a ten question knowledge test and then weighted votes according to scores acheived.. the democratic party would have to start paying positive attention to education, wouldn’t it?

Questions for McCain/Palin voters.
Did dinosaurs roam the earth with humans 6000 years ago? No. Don’t tell me you fell for the “Sarah Palin is a young-earth creationist” hoax.
Is Barack Obama a muslim? No.
Are fertilized eggs human beings? That’s a matter of opinion.
Is sexual orientation a reason to discriminate against your fellow citizens? I personally don’t think so, but you should ask all the Obama supporters out in California the same question.
Does the youth vote count? That’s a sloppy formulation; I can’t even tell what you’re asking. Best we can tell from exit polls with their limitations, the increased youth turnout from 2004 was anywhere between 1 and 6 percent.

Golly, Beth –

You’ve learned some new words since you moved to Georgia…oh my virgin ears! (HAHA)

We seem to be having a Troll invasion this morning. Listen, y’all. If you don’t like Ed’s views or our views, then go hang out at KosKids or Huf ‘n Puf. You’ll be more happy that you are there…and so will we.

The real people to blame are the people. They do not demand better news reporting.

I think news should teach not entertain.

unseen on November 18, 2008 at 8:55 AM

Obama really started running for president four years ago, with his speech at the DNC convention.
With a four-year start, Palin could have been a contender.
Now, sadly, she is just a punch-line.

matoko_chan on November 18, 2008 at 8:55 AM

Anyone that voted for Obama falls under the following catagories:
1) knew and agreed with his policies, and if so, they are socialists ( at the least ) or
2) Do not know what a socialist or socialist policies are or
3) didn’t know or understand his policies and voted without knowledge

Any of those choices are undesirable for anyone who loves this country… yes I am saying that any of those choices are un-American… I said it, I mean it and you can kiss my a$$ or move your lazy a$$ to one of the myriad of socialist countries that already exist!

beththebaker on November 18, 2008 at 8:49 AM

Excellent! However, you missed the main reason people voted for him – “He’s different.” Nothing about policy or issues, didn’t even bother to check. “He’s different.”

Oy! If I have to hear that one more time…

Karen_VA on November 18, 2008 at 8:55 AM

Really. Look how many people voted for Dion. That guy makes Sarah Palin sound like Cicero.

I lost a friend this election because of this. He argue’s politics with me by repeating the MSM narrative verbatim as the truth. He is a typical Lib – could not name the three branches of government if you spotted him two and could not name ten presidents if his children’s lives were at stake.

His is blissful in his ignorance and will continue to blame GWB for every fool thing Comrade Barry does.

Sadly he has revealed himself to be too dumb to hang with.

Questions for McCain/Palin voters.
Did dinosaurs roam the earth with humans 6000 years ago?
Is Barack Obama a muslim?
Are fertilized eggs human beings?
Is sexual orientation a reason to discriminate against your fellow citizens?
Does the youth vote count?
And also, all the other questions.
Neither side has a lock on ignorance and stupidity.

matoko_chan on November 18, 2008 at 8:33 AM

Hey Troll, you’ve provided us a good example of why your side is so damn insidious. Repeat after me, these are subjective questions because the answer to them is a matter of opinion (you know, the opposite of facts). That’s entirely different than simply not knowing the answer to a question. The point of this video isn’t that the people didn’t have the right opinion, it’s that they didn’t even know the basic facts.

That you confuse the two and consider an answer that you disagree with to be the same as plain old ignorance says a lot about you and it says a lot about people like you in schools and colleges who think opinions matter more than fact. Now go away and get back to making sandwiches.

No citizen receiving payments from the Federal Government, which payments are not in exchange for goods or services rendered to the Federal Government, shall be eligible to vote in any Federal election.

MrLynn on November 18, 2008 at 8:27 AM

Fat chance of that ever happening unless we get a supermajority in the senate….
Having said that though….I think that’s the wrong approach .
I believe, educating the electorate is the way….
We can start by disbanding the NEA and getting the feds out of education.

jerrytbg on November 18, 2008 at 8:36 AM

I don’t disagree. This quote pretty much sums it up:

The reason this country continues its drift toward socialism and big nanny government is because too many people vote in the expectation of getting something for nothing, not because they have a concern for what is good for the country. A better educated electorate might change the reason many persons vote. If children were forced to learn about the Constitution, about how government works, about how this nation came into being, about taxes and about how government forever threatens the cause of liberty perhaps we wouldn’t see so many foolish ideas coming out of the mouths of silly men.
—Lyn Nofziger

(from this useful page of quotes)

However, the left’s control of public education—and the universities—means that it will be an uphill battle to reintroduce the Constitution and the values of the Founding Fathers into the curriculum. How do you propose to “disband the NEA and get the feds out of education”?

It would be interesting, though, to start a movement to return conservatism to education. Maybe some organization like the Heritage Foundation could start the ball rolling. . .

Getting my Amendment passed would also take an herculean struggle, but without it I fear for the future of this nation. As Benjamin Franklin said,

When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the Republic.

It’s happening, aided and abetted by a population stuffed with bread and circuses and ignorant of even the basics of Constitutional government.

MrLynn on November 18, 2008 at 9:01 AM

I’ve often thought “how could ANYONE vote for Obama? Once you understand his positions, there is no way a sane, knowledgeable person could vote for him.”

Well, that video explains it all.

matoko_chan on November 18, 2008 at 8:33 AM

Yes, there is stupidity all around. Most people just want to put their hand in the sand about one issue or another. The Democrats want to pretend Islam isn’t the religious equivalent of Nazism, because to believe that lie makes them feel better. The people here at HotAir want to ignore our environmental crisis. The people here are aided and abetted by the environmentalists themselves who decided to pretend the biggest crisis is global climate change, because they fantasize some magic technology will save us on that issue. Thus the environmentalists avoid the hard work of confronting the ecologically crazy anti-abortion movement. I’m not 100% hopeful about the future.

Yeah, there are uninformed Republican voters too, and a couple conservative leaning news outlets too. But it doesn’t even come close to evening out. The tuquoque arguments don’t work in this case. Obama dominated the idgit vote, and the MSM did all they could to keep them idgits.

My favorite line from the whole video was the guy, not knowing the answer, saying “I’ll put that on Palin”.

Of course! Haven’t you see the Flintstones?

Is Barack Obama a muslim?

Yes, he has a funny name.

Are fertilized eggs human beings?

Human eggs or poultry?

Is sexual orientation a reason to discriminate against your fellow citizens?

People are discriminated against for anything and everything. What is one more?

Does the youth vote count?

Only if they voted properly.

kingsjester on November 18, 2008 at 9:12 AM

Palin did state that one could see Russia from the state as an answer to an interview question about her foreign-policy credentials.

A great example of ABC’s mythmaking in this election. She did NOT say that in answer to a question about her foreign policy credentials, although ABC edited her answer to make it appear that she had. And now even Ed has bought into it!

The MSM played a huge role in demonizing Palin and electing Obama.
