OneGyT on November 18, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Let the market settle this dustup.
Giving them a bailout will just prolong the inevitable. The Unions priced themselves out of the market. While the big three continue to build what no one wants. The dealerships don’t care about their customers, just their money. The service depts. treat you with contempt. You have to be an irate customer just to get anything done.

Talk about after a big three sale leaving skid marks out of the parking lot.

The man who should have been president except the self annointed political class, left and right, feared him and both sides worked to keep him out. If it had been Romney/Palin, you dimwit bill kristol, we would be anticipating the inauguration of President Romney.

2012…1st look…MITT!!!

It’s about time somebody that actually KNOWS what he’s talking about speaks out about this impending debacle!

Mitt’s right on the money….They don’t need a bailout, they need a turnaround!!!

Can I get an AMEN, brothers & sisters??

Tim Zank on November 18, 2008 at 11:06 PM

I’d really like to see every talking head on cable news that comes on calling for a bailout disclose what cars he or she owns. At least there will be some entertainment before the bailout goes through.

Mitt Romney will never be elected in 2012. Ever. It will never happen.

Sarah Palin with Mitt Romney as VP could pull it off and both would bring strengths to the table.

Mitt Romney as Presidential candidate? No way. It would be suicide.

If one of the big 3 were able to hire Mitt, they’d be guaranteed survival. He is America’s greatest turn-around artist.

In other news, McDonalds was going to hire Hickabee until they figured he wouldn’t fit in the drive thru window any more.

You people that think Sarah freakin Palin would be a better candidate than Mitt Romney need to open your eyes and see the big picture. Mitt Romney is one of the most intelligent businessman in the world who has proven time and time again that he can solve any challenge. I challenge you Palin supporters to examine Romney’s record of achievement and compare that long list to her’s. Mitt would have won this election hands down.

The problem is that this government is bailout happy. It saddens me to see our President preside this way. How can he give all this money and power to a doofus like Paulson? Bush gives too much trust to people who are so disloyal.

Man, let corporations fail. This is capitalism and it has worked in this country. When the government gets involved, it becomes an epic failure.

I have a Honda that works fine and not a problem. American cars break down. This is my experience as well as my father’s. He has bought American cars even when he was in Cuba before Fidel came to power. When he came to the USA in the early 70s, he bought American to this date. Now he is considering a Japanese model for the first time in his life.
He always told me, these American cars are not like they once were. These old cars from the 50s are still operating in Cuba.
The government, unions, liberals, and crappy environmentalists have ruined the American car industry.

Hey! Didn’t Mittens win the Michigan primary by promising to pump money into the auto industry? Funny how that principle changed all of the sudden.

Illinidiva on November 18, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Let me guess. That’s from your “memory”.

Here’s some facts for you: “I am not open to a bail out, but I am open to a work out. Washington should not be a benefactor, but it can and must be a partner.” Full speech. Welcome.

“First of all, we have to be honest about the problems we have and tackle them head on. If I’m President of this country, I will roll up my sleeves in the first 100 days I’m in office, and I will personally bring together industry, labor, Congressional and state leaders and together we will develop a plan to rebuild America’s automotive leadership. It will be a plan that works for Michigan and that works for the American taxpayer.

“And as part of this, we will directly address and rectify the enormous product cost and capital cost disadvantages that currently burden the domestic automakers. From legacy costs, to health care costs, to increased CAFE standard costs, to the cost of embedded taxes, Detroit can only thrive if Washington is an engaged partner, not a disinterested observer. The plan is going to have to include increases in funding for automotive related research as well as new tax benefits including making the Research and Development Tax Credit permanent.

“I am not open to a bail out, but I am open to a work out. Washington should not be a benefactor, but it can and must be a partner.

“But that’s only one step. Washington also has to stop loading Detroit down with unfunded mandates. Of course, we all want fuel mileage to rise, but discontinuous CAFE leaps, uncoordinated with the domestic manufacturers, and absent consideration of competitiveness, kills jobs and imperils the entire industry. Washington dictated CAFE is not the right answer.

“We also have to stop Washington politicians from imposing enormous unilateral energy costs on American manufacturing, including automotive manufacturing. For example, the McCain-Lieberman bill pending in Congress unilaterally imposes new high energy costs on U.S. manufacturers, with no safety valve. The Energy Information Agency estimated that this bill would raise electric rates by as much as 25% and gasoline by as much as 68 cents a gallon. And their estimate of the cost in U.S. jobs – 300,000 jobs. So it’s not just a job killer, it would also make it harder for families to make their ends meet.

“Now of course we have to tackle the threat of climate change. But we don’t call it America warming, we call it global warming. Placing caps and taxes on the U.S. alone just drives manufacturers to China and India, and does little more than make Washington politicians feel welcome at the embassy cocktail parties.

“Next, and you’ve heard this before, there is more healthcare cost in an automobile than steel costs. We got healthcare insurance premiums down in my state and we got everyone on track to be insured. We will work to do the same here and for the rest of the nation.

“And then a final burden, it’s time to fix the tax code. Corporations, like individuals, need lower and simpler taxes. Embedded taxes put our products at a disadvantage in our home market and wherever they compete around the world. When we send for example, a Ford Mustang overseas, it’s not just loaded with accessories. It’s loaded with our excessive healthcare costs, our excessive regulatory burdens, our excessive legal liability burden, and the taxes paid by every single automotive supplier to help put product into that car. You take off those burdens and let’s show them how fast a Mustang will actually go.

I was raised as a mormon for the first 18 years of my life and a born again Christian for the last 14 years. I can honestly say that Mitt Romeny has NO chance of winning as a Presidential candidate. I see both sides of this debate and see there will be NO middle ground with these religions. This is sad but true.

The country was willing to give Kennedy the benefit of the doubt in 1960 as a Catholic, but Mormonism is a long ways off. Mitts Grandfather George Romney (the former President of AMC/Rambler corporation)had a hard time with this in 1968 when he ran for President.

America just elected Barack Hussein Obama, a half Kenyan, half Kansan child raised as muslim in Indonesia & Hawaii. He accepted Christianity as an adult in Chicago.

If Obama had accepted Mormonism in Chicago? Wouldn’t have made it out of the Primary.

There are great things in the Mormon church, so I am not a Mormon basher….but it is very secretive and the Media would have a field day with it. Remember the Texas raid eary this year with the reformed wing of the Mormon church and the sex abuse garbage? Just the whiff of this story hurt Romney and he had nothing to do with it.

We own four cars. Two American cars that are semi-permanently parked because they BOTH suck gas like fiends and need new transmissions. And. Two Mazdas that are unstoppable gas sipping joys to drive. We keep the American built cars for nostalgia and fix the problems when we have nothing else to spend money on.

HOWEVER. I was listening to a clip on Mark Levin tonight with three squids trashing SUV owners for being greedy and stupid and I damn near turned around to head into my nearest Chevy dealer to buy a Suburban. Of course I would then need to buy Prius or something to tow behind it to soccer games — just to make a statement.

Green people need to back off.

BrideOfRove on November 18, 2008 at 11:32 PM

KBird on November 18, 2008 at 11:34 PM

Mitt didn’t learn much from Daddy.

He’s partly right, but when he starts carping about management of the Detroit automakers, he goes off on the same wrongheaded road members of Congress are taking.

It’s not management as much as it is unions — asserting themselves with lots o’ Congressional backing, an excess of dealers (ditto), and a cyclical market that, until recently, was sucking up all the SUVs everyone could build.

Detroit has deep problems, but the best way to help them is to ease some of the burdens government has imposed on them, not let the “car designers” in D.C. tell them what to build. And — maybe — make some loans available, not Paulson-esque no-strings giveaways like the financial sector is getting.

Oh, and by the way, Mittster: I went past the local American Motors dealership today and they didn’t seem to have any new cars to sell…Daddy didn’t do as great a job as you think, did he?

Mitt as President? Let’s try never.

The bailouts need to stop. Handouts only encourage more to stick their hand out. They aren’t using our money to bail these companies out, they are borrowing it from foriegn banks, and then it becomes our debt to pay back.

It’s time for something we haven’t had in quite a while, “hard times” and “sacrifice”. Maybe one of the big three won’t survive, but the two who do will come out stronger for it. Either way, if they can’t do it on their own, I dont’ want to pay for their bad management.

Granted, this anticdote is almost 25 years old, but when I was working for a consulting company to the big three, I can remember one particular meeting with the upper management at Cadillac when I asked how they were going to respond to to the Japanese companies introducing luxury lines (Honda=Acura, Toyota=Lexus, Nissan=Infiniti.). I was almost ushered out of the room as a pyriah. They were so very derisive, and I was told, (I’m a woman, this was MOST insulting), ” Honey, you don’t understand, we ARE Cadillac, OUR customers would never, never buy foreign cars. These start ups don’t worry us. our customers are loyal.” I oh, so wanted to respond with “YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE 90! THEY ARE DIEING.” However, I was a twenty-something and just put my tail between my legs and shut up.

Romney gets right to the point in this article: crappy management, too much union influence, myopic stock focus, lagging technology with respect to fuel efficiency. I’m only 25, but my three cars have all been foreign. Unfortunately for the big 3, I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Romney would have been such a good choice as VP, I’m still shaking my head. The guy is an economic genius. I mean he probably doesn’t know the words to Redneck Woman, but come on.

Palin in 2012 is an absolute joke. She knows next to nothing about world affairs, and to call her understanding of the economy rudimentary would be generous. Does she even know what credit derivatives are? Does she know anything other than energy? I mean seriously guys, do you really think she could beat Obama in 2012? Anyone with a cogent argument other than “she’s one of us” please indulge me. Her “this is the real America” garbage she talked about in Virginia is so ridiculous I couldn’t believe it when she said it. She is a fascinating woman, and I voted for her – but the Senate is the highest office I see her occupying with competency.

It is refreshing to read from someone who has some economic credentials and knows what they are talking about.

The problem with Barry is that he sees economics as a means to enact “social justice.” He does not seem to have any sense about how the market works and what it takes to get business unshackled and growing again.

I don’t watch 60 Minutes. Apparently, Barry exclaimed his admiration for FDR’s efforts in the 30s. We are in deep sh*t if that is the case. Read about the myths of the Great Depression and how FDR bungled the recovery.

Lets HOPE someone can CHANGE Barry’s understanding about economics before he sends the country into a spiral.

Mallard T. Drake on November 18, 2008 at 11:59 PM

I, for one, welcome our new chinese overlords.

And, as a roundeye, I can be useful in rounding up other roundeyes.

I think Mitt is dead right on this one, except for the naive belief that Detroit can ever be restructured to be anything better than what it has always been. You can’t restructure culture. Americans don’t want small, gas-sipping little Toyota econocars. Well, many do, but they live in cities, where GM long ago lost their advantage. GM sells dominantly in rural America, which is why the pickup truck, ironically the Ford F-150, has been the perennial best selling vehicle in America. In rural America, you won’t be caught dead driving a foreign car. GM has been milking this loyalty and is the only thing that keeps them from being dead long ago.

Ultimately, what will happen, is that the car business will go the way of the electronic business, the clothing business, the housewares business, etc., and it will go to China. Cars are made in such a rout method today, that slapping together an econo car is no different that slapping together a DVD player. Division of labor will see to it that these vehicles will be made by the human robots of China and India. Only luxury cars, like any luxury item, will be manufactured by big brand names in the 1st world. GM, Ford, Chrysler, will cease to be relevant in 30-40 years. Maybe sooner. Bailing them out is like the British government bailing out British Leyland. The British no longer have an auto industry.

Mitt (who reminds me of Max Headroom –but more fake) is a gun grabber and not worthy of any conservatives vote—-

but he’s dead right on this one and on alot of other things.

Prseident? No.

Otherwise…..almost anything else, sure.

Dude, nObama couldn’t tell you what a derivative was either. Could Biden? Last time I checked, neither one of them was running for POTUS (okay, Biden gets a pass). Heck, the people selling them can’t even describe what exactly they’re selling, and you expect Palin to know???

cubsfan: I agree.
I also agree with his article. I wish one of the big 3 would put him in as CEO – I bet he would take no money for the job and turn the darn company around. Give him a chance.
There is no way he would be elected president – the evang can’t get over the fact that he is a Mormon. So let him do what he does best, and we now have the most liberal Pres thanks to those who can’t see past his religion. Maybe, he wouldn’t have won, but he would have given a darn good account of what he would do.

Look, I am Mormon. The fact of the matter is this – Mormonism isn’t going to fix the economy or keep this nation safe. Neither is any other religion for that matter.

I think Mitt would serve as a fine president.

I think he would serve this nation better if he founded his own college or built new businesses though.

People like Romney can do far more for this nation in the private sector.

The article fail to point how this mess started and why.
Govmint, namely democrats, encouraged lenders to give out bad loans. House flippers made a business of buying and selling fixer-uppers, that’s not wall street.

[Teh] Great Depression was caused by borrowing on margin.
It’s somewhat similar to today’s problem, except it more like living beyond one’s means.

By the time “Feed the Pig” slogan came along it was too late. Fiscal conservationism and good business practice regulation is the key to fixing this. Not over regulation, but sound biz.

Wow. Can you say buyers remorse. People that put McCain over in South Carolina have to kicking themselves. This? We copuld have had this!!!! Mitt Romney versus Barack Obama with the economy as the biggest issue. I can say I proudly voted for Romney as the last best hope for victory.

Althought I think he would have been a big a wuss on calling out Obama as McCain but he would have KILLED him on the economy. The Black Guy versus The Mormon! Two minorites enter, one minority leaves…

I agree with you about Obama and Biden, but that wasn’t my point ;)

My point was that Romney is one of the brightest economic minds in America today, and he would have been solid as a rock for McCain in this sense. And hey, I know what credit derivatives are, and I sell them for a living ;)
Options were the easiest part of the Series 7 for me.

Mitt’s right on this…The trendsetting auto makers(NOT) in Detroit and the self-serving union bosses have almost destroyed a vital American industry by their inability to see past a 3 year contract. Just wait until January ‘09 when the demo Congress gives them big bucks and Card Check and see how much faster the Rust Belt economy falls.

In my area, dealers are selling 2008 F-150’s for 11k and F-150 Super Crews for 16.5k, HALF of normal price…it’s the same for Dodge and Chevy…

For the record, I have driven Honda’s since 1985 and currently have a Civic Si.

What’s all this stuff about “derivatives” that sounds like BOSS talk to me. I’d rather vote for someone who looks like they work on the assembly line like Huckabee. Than someone who knows all this corporate boss talk like Romney.

Romney is just not average looking enough to earn my vote.

I also heard he doesn’t spit in public neither. And he pulls the skin off of his chicken before he eats. Romney in 2012? In a pigs eye!

“Mitts Grandfather George Romney (the former President of AMC/Rambler corporation)had a hard time with this in 1968 when he ran for President.”

First of all, George Romney was Mitt’s father, not his grandfather and he was a great man. No he did not have a problem with his religion when he ran for President in the 60’s.

Second: I don’t know where you were raised for 18 years, but it wasn’t in the Mormon Church or you would know that the people down in Texas have no NO NO connection with the Mormon Church. Polygamy was outlawed in the late 1800’s and some people broke away from the church because of it. They are the progenitors of those people.

Third: Exactly how many families in Texas have been charged with sexual child abuse? How many again? I’m waiting for the answer.

Bambi on November 19, 2008 at 12:27 AM

Can we get off the kick about religion as a prerequesite to the Presidency? Carter is a devout Christian, but was a horrible President. Kennedy was a Catholic, he gave the country hope but stumbled into two things (Bay of Pigs, Cuba Missile Crisis) that he should have avoided. But I do have a line, muslims need not apply.

We elect a President to be the Chief Executive. Not the Chief Preacher.

I was a Romney supporter before he stepped aside. I felt the country needed a good business man and someone who wouldn’t surrender the War on Terrorism. Now we got neither. We must stop eliminating good people because of their personal faith (muslims exluded) and judge them on their record of success and failures. Romney has his faults, but he has a record of doing good things under pressure. But that was ignored because he was a Mormon.

If our elected officials stopped handing out money left and right, I wouldn’t care if they prayed to their toilet.

Hog Wild on November 19, 2008 at 12:28 AM

Portlandon, this quote alone shows, raised one or not, you picked up a lot less about the LDS church than you think you did. With helpful friends like you and Huckabee, it’s no wonder a Mormon would have a hard time being elected to the Presidency in this day and age. So I guess you’re a Christian the same way as Timothy Mcveigh was a Christian, right?

OldManC on November 18, 2008 at 11:56 PM

No,No,No. I was merely pointing out the same problem Palin has with the media. As soon as the Texas Rangers were raiding the Fundamentalist Mormon compound, within Hours the Media was talking about how “this would effect the Romney campaign”. It was ridiculous. Romneys Mormonism is like night & day to the whack jobs that perversed his religion. It is just a fact that people are very skeptical about mormonism already and THE MEDIA didn’t help that by mentioning Romney name in the same sentence.

Palin & the Wardrobe, Palin & Troopergate, the media keeps things going. Romney was hurt by the Texas raid thing. Also, Romney made alot of money by busting up companies and selling components which laid off alot of workers over the years. The media was already foaming at the mouth for McCain to pick him. The Media & Obama had the “Gordon Gecko” noose ready for Mitt.

And as for you questioning how little I learned in the Mormon church, My grandfather was a Bishop, Stake President, and my parents are still very active. Believe me, I learned plenty.

Bambi on November 19, 2008 at 12:27 AM

First: Whoops! George Romney was his father, and a great man. I liked him and not just because I own a 1959 Rambler. He was a brilliant thinker, but people did question his Mormonism. He made a political statment about Vietnam & Brainwashing that hurt his campaign pretty badly.

Second: The Texas Group was a looney off branch of the Mormon Chruch (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). Polygamy IS a big no no in the Mormon church, but Mitt Romenys Great Grandparents were polygamist ( Gaskell Romney & Anna Amelia Pratt) who went to Mexico to keep this Polygamist lifestyle going. This was a very contentious break in the Church Doctorine. That is why there were so many offshoots of the Mormon church. Those who decided to do away with Polygamy and follow federal law and those who quietly broke away and “did their own thing”.

Third: The Texas Raid was a Travesty of Justice. It should never have happened. The Government overreached their authority. They should have simply sent in social workers and investigated. Nobody has been charged.

My point in the Texas raid was to say that this just brought negatives to Romney that he didn’t need. I like Romney. I would have voted for him over McCain. But I don’t think he is not electible. The media loves to attack him on the Mormon thing. That jerk Huckabee kept making it an issue. If your own party makes it an issue there really is no hope for it as a plus.

portlandon on November 19, 2008 at 12:49 AM

We could have had a smart guy like Romney…but oh no, he’s a Evil Rich guy and a Mormon. Can’t have that.

Instead we get a guy that is being pushed as a cross between Lincoln and FDR and all the good things that America can be.

Our elites, our media are rotting from their core. It can not be a good thing.
