Inevitably, first “Draft Sarah” website appears

As if to confirm my hunch that Palin could flip millions of conservatives on amnesty simply by issuing an edict on the subject, the man responsible for the “Draft Sarah” website turns out to be an ardent opponent of illegal immigration. The more I think about that Frum video from last night, the more I think he’s missing an enormous opportunity: Since much of the base now regards Palin as Conservatism Incarnate, the fastest way for him to bend them towards the center is to embrace her and get her to bend that way first. She’s living, breathing vindication of KP’s “great man theory” of political evolution, at least with respect to the primaries. I fear for the boss, though, having to choose between her Palinmania and … a path to citizenship for illegals.
Tellingly, even the straw poll on the “Draft Sarah” website has The One out in front of a hypothetical 2012 match-up by a two-to-one margin.

Oh please, the poll is just a indicator as to which side sent more traffic to that website already.

Sometimes it looks like Palinmania is sort of Victimeter – a victimized conservative’s response to the left and the media hating her.
As long as she is vilified nobody will worry about Amnesty or other issues.
Aristotle on November 18, 2008 at 4:48 PM
Minus the “great”.
Palin needs to focus on her decreasingly likely re-election in 2010 before she can run for President. The price of oil is going to kill her budgets, she’s made a lot of enemies in Alaska, and the Democrats are probably sitting on a pile of opposition research.
Big S on November 18, 2008 at 4:50 PM
As if elections will be allowed in 2012, and if they are, those ‘racists’ who don’t support Odummy won’t be allowed to vote anyway.

I’m skeptical. Rarely, I think the base is in a compromising mood still from having to face the reality of having to vote McCain vs. Obama. Palin is so far more palatable to conservatives then McCain is, that right now, one disagreement isn’t going to be a deal-breaker.
Unless, of course, a better candidate comes on the scene. Of which there are none (yet).

If they were, they would have used it already, instead of telling us about her second hand tanning bed.
CurtZHP on November 18, 2008 at 4:53 PM
I have been wrong before, but I strongly believe that the stance Sarah took on immigration in her interview with Univision was to undeniably accommodate McCain immigration orthodoxy, and the price Sarah had to pay for McCain to ask her to join him on the ticket. A small minority may claim she ’sold out’. but I believe a greater majority will decide to ‘roll with the punches’ especially if she comes out with a strong ‘build the fence, keep the illegals out’ stance sometime in the next year.
technopeasant on November 18, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Her approval ratings have been dropping. In addition to the massive troubles she will be up against in the next two years, I think I’m justified in saying that her re-election is decreasingly likely.
Big S on November 18, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Oh yeah. I’m sure the “She fired a man who wouldn’t fire a man who tasered a 7-year-old” commercials will go over great.

Sure, she’s made enemies in Alaska. And she doesn’t appear to give a damn. She just goes over their head and direct to the people.
She’ll pass a balanced budget, also.

RushBaby on November 18, 2008 at 4:57 PM
Yeah, I think it is extremely unlikely she would contradict him on the need for immigration reform or on campaign finance reform as he was touting both.
We will definitely get a more full picture of her views on those issues now.
Spirit of 1776 on November 18, 2008 at 4:57 PM
Palin will not side with open borders. She will be for strong border enforcement & pathway to citizenship. How do we even know how big the problem is if we don’t even have an exact headcount on who is illegal? If we get illegals registered, we can deport them in waves and they can apply for citizenship without penalty.
If the whole country has to have a national citizenship card we could nail those without easily. Maybe that would be the best route.
portlandon on November 18, 2008 at 4:57 PM
I have to disagree. What are these supposed “massive troubles”? Are you taking stuff straight from the mouth of the AP these days? You are completely delusional.
jimmy the notable on November 18, 2008 at 4:57 PM
She has no troubles just great opportunities.
She will be just fine.
Firebird on November 18, 2008 at 4:58 PM
Sure Sarah has to get elected in 2010, but Sarah is a charismatic politician. If she wants to run for re-election as Governor she will be the favorite. Of course, a win is not automatic, but neither is her defeat either.
technopeasant on November 18, 2008 at 4:59 PM
Maybe not. The result of the election was not really in doubt for at least a month before it happened. Obama was not in danger of losing at any time during the month of October. I’m sure the campaign knew that and decided to keep its powder dry. Also, any new revelations about Palin’s past would not have helped Obama’s campaign because they would have knocked her ridiculous interviews off the top of the newscasts. She did a good enough job killing her own image that the Obama campaign really didn’t have to do too much.
Big S on November 18, 2008 at 4:59 PM
In one interview ( fox Greta ) she said that when the oil money started to flow into the state people wanted to spend them but she opted to save for the future, if that’s true she’s got nothing to worry about.

If she had skeletons, they’d be out now. Even the manufactured ethics charge is completely dissolved now. She’s in great shape for re-election and continued fame. If she can achieve continued success in Alaska in a 2nd term, she’ll be in prime position come ‘12. But I hope she runs in ‘16 barring a BO meltdown.

Her approval ratings fell like 20 points in Alaska as of July and oil prices are down.
That’s not surprising, nor is it likely long lasting. She was an attack dog and absent. Now returned, she’ll gain most of it right back. She was very high, so a drop for her leaves her higher still then most govrs.

Firebird on November 18, 2008 at 5:07 PM
What is this “campaign” you speak of? The massive amount of Democrats in freaking ALASKA??
And the troubles you speak of? Are you talking about budget problems? She was sending out checks to people because Alaska had so much money when oil was high. Since oil is down, she’ll have to stop sending checks. That’s about it. Its not like its freaking California where they have massive entitlement programs or something that need to be funded.
And by the way, its clear from you “she destroyed her own image” baloney that you are biased against Palin from the get-go, so please stop pretending that you even want her to win re-election. Even the craziest Kos Kid wouldn’t pretend for a second that anyone has a shot against Palinmania in her home state. Ted Stevens was convicted of a felony, and he might freaking win. Palin was found to have done nothing wrong in the “troopergate” scandal, and you want to pretend that there’s some MASSIVE thing that the Democrats have that will totally destroy her? Unless she’s secretly a serial killer who drowns puppies in her spare time, I think you’re delusional.
jimmy the notable on November 18, 2008 at 5:07 PM
As many have pointed out, the primary role of a VP candidate is to defer to the top of the ticket in all things, on all issues, so Sarah Palin has not yet fully defined her stance on many positions, so the next two years are crucial for her–and for those of us who want so very badly to support her. The 2-1 straw poll is a snapshot, in my view. In two years, Obama will have met with Putin, backed the Saudi Middle East peace plan to the hilt, raised capital gains and other taxes, and achieved the overall results most conservatives anticipate, and even a madly spinning MSM won’t be able to diguise the true state of things. Even so, it isn’t so much what Obama does or doesn’t do in the next two years. It’s what Sarah does, what we do or don’t do that matters most.
troyriser_gopftw on November 18, 2008 at 5:08 PM

ameripundit, if you’ve followed enough Big S posts, you’d know that he’s one of those that constantly blames social cons for this most recent defeat and typically sides with a more Brooks-like or Frum-like approach to the direction the Republican Party should take.
So STFU and quit whining, because that’s what the aggregate of Big S’s posts here shows – he’s a RINO that thinks conservatives should sacrifice their principles.
thirteen28 on November 18, 2008 at 5:08 PM
Maybe you should stop criticizing over ratings. Everyone knows numbers go up and down. Her capability is far more important then her numbers at any given time. Criticizing her numbers doesn’t even address her or her policy work – it’s criticizing her because of a poll. That’s weak gruel.
Spirit of 1776 on November 18, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Hey Big_S(nookem Doodles)….
I haven’t called you a “Name”… So where is that link that proves her precentage is how high/low in Alaska.

Sorry amerpundit, but Big S is crazy, he’s not just some well-meaning conservative. Palin’s reelection is an inevitablitity, anyone who wants to pretend otherwise is out of his mind. So her approval ratings are down…so what? That still puts her at, what…70% approval? Bush was reelected President with barely 50.
jimmy the notable on November 18, 2008 at 5:12 PM
Sarah is in an enviable position. Four years out from the next Presidential election, she has enhanced her position and has the grass-roots behind her. As a previous poster said unless ’she is a serial killer who drowns puppies in her spare time’ Sarah will retain her high ranking, despite the intentions of both Democrats and Republicans in the next 4 years to shake her supporters from her ‘tree’.
technopeasant on November 18, 2008 at 5:12 PM

I think Big S is exaggerating, but she’s far from bulletproof. And I am definitely a big Sarah fan so please know I am pulling for her and I do think she will ultimately win, but:
-There is no sales or income tax in Alaska. The budget is almost entirely paid for by gas revenues. Which, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, are going down. It’s much harder to balance the budget when the oil revenues aren’t flowing in. For all I know she’s got a great plan to deal with this contingency but for now it’s a big question mark.
-Her approval ratings were significantly lower during the campaign when she had to cast aside her bipartisan cloak and sink her teeth into Obama. Sure, Obama isn’t too popular up there, but her new role took a bit of the sheen off of her.
-I don’t know what people’s impression of Troopergate is up in Alaska but some of the big papers up there seem ready to discredit her with it and I don’t know how badly that will affect her. Looks like Anchorage Daily News is not entirely fair and balanced on the whole matter.
I don’t know about the oppo research, though. what the hell do they have on her that none of those 30 NYT/Obama people couldn’t find digging through the trashcans in Wasilla?

Grow Fins on November 18, 2008 at 5:13 PM
Well I think his point was that every problem is an opportunity. People don’t turn on you because something bad happens, people turn on you because you handle it poorly. Conversely if you handle it well then people will like you more because of it.
As for approval ratings I’m sure that at least a significant portion of that drop is due to simple partisanship. Presidential races are extremely polarizing.
Also I will remind you that Bush’s approval rating in 2004 was around 45 percent and he beat Kerry by a very similar margin as Obama beat McCain. Approval ratings are not an accurate picture of the way people are going to vote.
Kronos on November 18, 2008 at 5:13 PM

Palin’s Alaska approval rating dropped from a high of 82% to her new low of 68%. HAHAHA! Any governor in the US would be begging for 68%. This is a temporary drop, I imagine it would average out to mid 70’s in a few months. She has nothing to worry about. Alaska will fair better than most of the lower 48 because of the “rainy day fund” she put away for.

I stated in many posts after the election that I favored Sarah running for Stevens’ Senate seat once he is given the boot by his fellow Senators. Well it now appears that Begich is going to win that seat precluding Sarah from going to the Senate now. So with that in mind what Sarah should do now is fulfill her term as governor, write her memoirs ($7m book contract); not run for re-election and run full-out starting in 2010 without any government responsibility and with the total backing of the grass-roots to the the Republican nominee in the 2012 Presidential election.
technopeasant on November 18, 2008 at 5:25 PM
For the record, upinak, I opposed Palin while you were pushing her before the VP selection. I warned that she’d scare away moderates and would kill McCain’s claim to greater “experience”. We all saw what happened: her favorables went negative, she made a fool of herself on national TV, and independent voters told exit pollsters that she was a major negative on the Republican ticket. McCain stopped using the experience argument.
I’ll match my political instincts against yours any day, even if I’m doing it from afar. Sometimes distance helps you see the big picture a little better.
Big S on November 18, 2008 at 5:26 PM
Play the victim. Someone needs to, I guess.
Here’s the truth. I’ve not read all the posts here lately, but where has there been any criticism with merit?
There have been repetition of the “leaks” out of the McCain camp, which even MSNBC retracted. Repetition of those here deserve scorn, as they are not to be taken seriously. Some criticism has been over her intellect, which is also absurd. And today, concern over her popularity dropping to what is high for other states, when it is likely to rebound.
I’m happy to field some criticism that has merit. Let’s hear some of that.

Wishful thinking. All the opposition reesearch issues have been aired and she still has a mid-60% approval rating.
If you know anything about Alaskan’s (my wife’s family is from there) you know that cutting the state budget will be very popular. These aren’t people who think much of welfare or whine about tough times.
And she can has no problem with making the choices necessary to cut budgets. I posted info on this is another thread but will post it here for those who didn’t see it (yes my posts are that important :-)
She’s faced budget choices before and done the right thing. These are copied from Townhall.com (Matt Lewis blog. The link is: Palin the Fiscal Conservative Reformer
Palin’s veto ax lops $268 million from budget”
- Achorage Daily News Headline, 5/24/2008
The Palin Fiscal Record:
July 1st, 2007 – Massive line item vetoes (lopping almost a quarter-billion dollars off of a $1.8 billion capital budget).
Dec. 11th, 2007 – Palin’s proposed budget slashes earmark requests, and dramatically slows growth of government.
March 23rd, 2008 – More vetoes in the “supplemental budget”. Palin also demands that legislators explain their pork projects to her personally before she signs off on any of them. This issue was particularly hilarious because the budget was for “emergency spending” and it included (among other things) the construction of batting cages and gun ranges.
May 24th, 2008 – Second consecutive year of huge line-item vetoes in the state’s capital budget (over a quarter-billion dollars this time, 10% of the total capital budget):

I’ll wait and see how she walks that “pathway to citizenship” tripe back. IIRC, she made no reference to just letting attrition work some magic when employers of illegals get nailed and punished. She emphasized the inefficiency of trying to round them all up as part of the citizenship gig. I’m willing to listen to her new tack if she has one. This is a pretty important issue and will continue to snowball now that the La Raza types have their feet in the door with Obama’s election. She’ll need to do better.

The One isn’t even president yet. Do you really expect him to have lower ratings without even doing anything to earn them? Still, I would take Palin, Jindal, or someone fresh and new with good ideas. I do not idolize Palin, though. I will not participate in Palinmania because it would almost be as bad as Obamamania. Whoever’s best for the party’s got my vote.

This worries me. We should have an open mind for 2012. There are plenty of other choices that may reveal themselves to be best for the party. Bobby Jindal being the one I am watching the most.

Why would that criticism of her performance be vapid? When your child comes to you with a C on his report card when you know he can do better and has done better (see her interviews on energy earlier on) is your criticism of him vapid? Do you hate him because of it?
Now obviously I don’t see myself as her parent or superior, but I criticize her when I know she could’ve done better.

Don’t let it. What is going on right now is a push-back against the media and laying down the roots for a conservative resistance. It’s centered around Palin becasue Palin is who the media tried to destroyed. What is going on right now is essentially a big f-u to the media.
The primaries will be just like any other primaries. Lots of candidates and a dog-fight.
