I’m torn. On the one hand, we can spare the octogenarian libertine vote. On the other hand, when an entrepreneur savvy enough to build a commercial empire out of wearing pajamas all day while naked women frolic in his midst gives you advice, it’s probably wise to listen.

As I mentioned in another post, Sarah is like the second-string QB that comes into the game when her team is down three TD’s. She manages to score mega-points but her team still loses by a TD despite her great, heroic efforts. The first string QB had just performed too poorly and the defense didn’t play well at all. After the game the pundits would comment, as if by rote, that Sarah has promise and given more seasoning will be a first-stringer QB and perhaps a Hall of Famer one day. Isn’t that what we really have in Sarah-a gal with a tremendous amount of potential who we know can perform in the clutch and given more time to refine her craft will become even better in executing the game plan (stating policy positions).

Hefner was lucky enough to be the right lech in the right place at the right time as societal standards changed.
A lot of people (me included) were looking at George Allen the same way after the 2004 election. I think that was why he was targeted so hard in 2006. A lot can and will happen in the next 4 years. We shall see how it works itself out.

When I was in college, there was a guy known as the pajama man because he wore pajamas all the time. He was enrolled in the College of Music. Ah, but the genius of Hef is that he saw that porn didn’t have to be “seedy.” He recognized the men who like to look at naked women aren’t perverts, they are just men. Many are smart, capable men who also might enjoy reading John Updike short stories, investigative journalism, and interviews with Ayn Rand.
There were plenty of girlie mags around before Playboy. Hef rose above the rest because he didn’t insult the intelligence of his readers.

One of the best bits of analysis I ever heard about Playboy was from Calder Willingham, who co-wrote the screenplay for “The Graduate” and whose later book “Rambling Rose” won some Oscar nominations in the 1990s.
Calder once complained that the average Playmate of the Month didn’t actually look like the girl next door, but more like the whore next door.

Sort of. I’m not a subscriber, but I do respect the man’s business sense and foresight. He was one of the first people who openly recognized that being sexual and being intellectual don’t have to mutually exclusive. There are precedents to this kind of thinking, but he mainstreamed it.
