New Huckabee book rips Mitt, Fred, evangelical leaders, pretty much everyone; Update: Romney camp fires back

A desperately needed fix of campaign drama during this post-election interregnum detox. Just give me a little hit of score-settling to get me through the day, bro. Just one hit.
Ah, that’s the stuff:
Mitt Romney, Huckabee’s principal rival in Iowa, comes in for the roughest treatment. Huckabee writes that the former Massachusetts governor’s record was “anything but conservative until he changed the light bulbs in his chandelier in time to run for president.” He notes that Romney declined to make a phone call of congratulations after Huckabee beat the oddsmakers to win the Iowa caucuses, “which we took as a sign of total disrespect.” He mocks Romney for suggesting, during one debate, more investment in high-yield stocks as a solution to economic woes. “Let them eat stocks!” Huckabee jokes…
He calls out Pat Robertson, the Virginia-based televangelist, and Dr. Bob Jones III, chancellor of Bob Jones University in South Carolina, for endorsing Rudy Giuliani and Romney, respectively. He also has words for the Texas-based Rev. John Hagee, who endorsed the more moderate John McCain in the primaries, as someone who was drawn to the eventual Republican nominee because of the lure of power. Huckabee speaks to Hagee by phone before the McCain endorsement, while the former Arkansas governor is preparing for a spot on Saturday Night Live. “I asked if he had prayed about this and believed this was what the Lord wanted him to do,” Huckabee writes of his conversation with Hagee. “I didn’t get a straight answer.” Months later, McCain rejected Hagee’s endorsement because of controversial remarks the pastor had made about biblical interpretations.
In a chapter titled “Faux-Cons: Worse than Liberalism,” Huckabee identifies what he calls the “real threat” to the Republican Party: “libertarianism masked as conservatism.” He is not so much concerned with the libertarian candidate Ron Paul’s Republican supporters as he is with a strain of mainstream fiscal conservative thought that demands ideological purity, seeing any tax increase as apostasy and leaving little room for government-driven solutions to people’s problems.
Kudos to Time for a choice selection of representative quotes: Waging low-grade class warfare by sneering at Romney’s wealth and appealing to evangelicals to vote along religious lines is Huck to a T. As is the bit about “government-driven solutions,” of course — this is a guy who once endorsed a federal ban on smoking in workplaces, remember — although that’s qualified by the fact that he’s been a loud and, for most conservatives, righteous opponent of the bailout. Whether that’s because he knows an unpopular issue when he sees one or because an extraordinary intervention in extraordinary circumstances crossed some sort of statist threshold in his mind that ordinary interventions in ordinary circumstances wouldn’t, only he knows. We’ll learn more circa 2010, I imagine.
InstaGlenn will interview him later this week; I eagerly await their exchange on the merits of libertarianism. Exit question: In a Huck/Palin primary showdown, who escapes with the lion’s share of the Christian vote? Don’t answer too hastily. Guilt is, potentially, a factor here.
Update: Another hit on the drama pipe. Mmmmm yeah.
Asked to respond, Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Huckabee was acting small.
“This type of pettiness is beneath Mike Huckabee,” Fehrnstrom. “If we’re going to move the party forward, we need to offer more than personal recriminations. Unfortunately, in this book, Mike Huckabee is consumed with presumed slights, and he seems more interested in settling scores than in bringing people together.”

Good for Romney. I’m a firm believer in telling even blatant lies if they are inconsequential and beneficial to the overall cause.
Dusty on November 17, 2008 at 12:56 PM
I realize it was said by an aide and not the man himself, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. However, let it be known that any man that is busy worrying about whether somebody disrespected them or not is not a man that should be leading the country.
JadeNYU on November 17, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Huckabee is the hypocrite and the liar. We have been having to deal with him for 2 years, so we know him and it’s 100% in character for him to trash conservatives.
It is BECAUSE of the huckster that Mitt did not get the nomination because Huck split primaries and threw VA/WV (whichever it was) to McCain.
IF ROMNEY HAD BEEN THE NOMINEE, WE WOULD HAVE PRESIDENT ELECT ROMNEY NOW, INSTEAD THE COURTS ARE LOST FOR 2 OR 3 GENERATIONS. THANKS, HUCK!

AMEN bigred! I failed to bring that up. I almost despised Huck during the primaries, and loved it when Fred kicked his ass in the last debate. He is a charlatan, and this book is further proof, not that we needed it. He and Chip Saltzman, and Ed Rollins and others ran the DIRTIEST and lowest class campaign of any Republican in the primaries, and he stoked a lot of anti-Mormon bigotry.
ReaganConservative3 on November 17, 2008 at 1:00 PM
Huckabee wants Federal legislation dealing with smoking. That is Anti-Federalist (and I don’t mean that in the good Anti-Federalist way that Henry and Jefferson were) and it is un-Constitutional.
So for him to act like he is a “pure” Conservative is a joke.

cjs1943 on November 17, 2008 at 1:07 PM
Let’s see…
A whiny, backbiting, divisive, bitter, acidic populist who held the social right hostage to bludgeon Romney long after the man dropped out, just to make sure the guy didn’t get picked as VP, THEN continued the barrage to cauterize any future thoughts of a Mitt candidacy…
or
A young, effervescent, decent, gracious, hard-hitting, corruption-busting current governor with an 80% approval rating in her state who practices what she preaches under the most trying of circumstances, offers to babysit the children of the woman who has been savaging her every Saturday Night for weeks with no hint of resentment, and electrifies crowds?
I considered carefully whether my support for a McCain/[] ticket would increase or decrease depending on my choice. I went Palin.
I considered the rockstar quality of one with the carny-folk vibe of the other…and picked Palin.
I considered the rhetorical quality of each candidate’s HotAir supportership…and picked Palin.
Huck fights dirty, but Palin is used to taking on adversaries who fight dirty. With a few more years’ national experience, Palin will be a juggernaut.
I doubt a 2012 rematch, though. I suspect Palin will bide her time, build a network, cultivate some gravitas worthy of her potential, and only then make her own run for the top spot.
sulla on November 17, 2008 at 1:07 PM
The campaign that was most divisive during this entire season was Flip Romney’s campaign. His tactics were reprehensible.
If Flip is the direction the GOP takes, God help us all.
Al-Ozarka on November 17, 2008 at 1:08 PM
I guess I’ll need to buy his book and try to understand his argument better. However, based on the report here, it strikes me as being very disturbing. True libertarians are not a good fit in the Republican party; their ideology basically reduces to anarchy, which is not going to fly anytime soon.
But the gist of the paragraph leads me to believe that Huckleberry Hound is a proponent of big government, “compassionate” conservatism. If that’s the case, Huckleberry Hound just wrote himself off as a significant player in the Republican Party going forward. Compassionate conservatism and neoconservatism have both been pretty forcefully repudiated as “good ideas.”
Outlander on November 17, 2008 at 1:08 PM
I should have gave this guy an earful when I had the chance during the primaries. very small press avail would have been easy to get in his face – oh well, a lifetime of regrets now.

Every time the man opens his mouth, he makes himself more despised. Why WOULDN’T we hate him? Everything he says makes him more and more despicable.
I know too little about Romney to make a judgement on him. Huck on the other hand has made himself more than heard. And we don’t like what we’re hearing.

Excuse you, but what basis do you have to believe that Romney is a “faux-con?” It’s not like he was avowedly pro choice until Mormon Central Command told him to shut his pie-hole. It’s not like he supported a giant mandate program for health care that drove costs up and didn’t work. Focus on the important stuff — he vetoed a bill about stem cells. What more proof do you need?

Corrupt Huck
In Arkansas, Mr. Huckabee was investigated by the state ethics committee at least 14 times. Most of the complaints centered on what appears to be a serial disregard for government rules about gifts and outside financial compensation. He reported $112,000 worth of gifts in one year alone, nearly double his $67,000 salary.
Five of the 14 investigations resulted in admonishments: Two for failing to report gifts (one was later overturned), the other three for some $80,000 that Mr. Huckabee and his wife received but failed to initially report. One of these admonishments involved a $23,500 payment to Mr. Huckabee from an opaque organization called Action America that he helped found in 1994 while lieutenant governor, and that was designed to coordinate his speeches and supplement his income.
Mr. Huckabee caused an uproar when he used a $60,000 account intended to maintain the governor’s mansion for personal expenses, including restaurant meals, dry cleaning and boat supplies. He also faced a lawsuit over his assertion that $70,000 worth of furniture donated to the mansion was his to keep. Sprinkled among all this are complaints about the misuse of state planes and campaign funds, mistakes on financial disclosure forms, and fights over documents related to ethics investigations.
Any one of these episodes individually may appear penny ante, but they add up to a disturbing pattern. People I’ve spoken with who worked with Mr. Huckabee in Arkansas dispute the idea that he is “corrupt.” They instead ascribe his ethical mishaps to a “blind spot” rooted in his beginnings as a Baptist minister and a Southern culture of gift-giving; they suggest he never made the mental transition to public office.
Some will also argue Mr. Huckabee is no more ethically challenged than Mr. Giuliani, who is getting pounded with questions about Judith Nathan’s security detail and Giuliani Partner clients. The difference is that Hizzoner is a celebrity whose past bones were long ago picked clean by the media crows. Even the Nathan flap is an extension of news that made the rounds five years ago.
The obscure governor from Arkansas is, in contrast, a deep sea for media diving. Most recent have been stories about his pardons and commutations, as well as the news that R.J. Reynolds contributed to Action America. Mr. Huckabee–who now wants a national smoking ban in public places–responded that he never knew he accepted tobacco money, which has inspired a former adviser to claim Mr. Huckabee is being “less than truthful.” What’s next?

Romney is the Godfather of Gay Marriage.
Romney is the Godfather of Socialized Medicine.
Romney is the Godfather of tax payer funded abortions.
Romney is the Godfather of FEES as the new tax.
Romney is the Godfather of “who let the dogs out”.
Romney is the Godfather of “air tight kennels for dogs”.
Romney is the Godfather of accusing someone of Amnesty while also defending them against Amnesty.
The list is endless. If you want to bash Huckabee for some things he done as Governor that could be interpreted as un-Conservative, then you should also add Romney to that list. And just to be fair, the last time I checked, a windfall profits tax against oil companies was considered a Liberal view by most Conservatives, so through Palin in that list as well.

If one weren’t tithing half their paycheck to some sort of government entity they would probably have more to give to charity, to their imaginary friend (Jebus or what not), pay their crummy mortgage, pay down their debt. Yes those heartless fiscal conservatives that realize money would be able to help the poor more efficiently in the private sector. Also lower taxes across the board lowers prices so poor people would be able to afford more goods in the first place.
And your final sentence is complete plagarism, I have to go back and read Vlad Lenin tonight and find out exactly where you pilfered it.

Phony populism is better, as long as it agrees with Huck.
/sarc
Hopefully, Huckabee and Romney will both be history by 2012.
Jindal, Sanford, Palin and others don’t have their baggage and communicate better to the average voter.
Huckabee can be the new O’Reilly, without paying for phone sex. At least compared to O’Reilly, Huckabee almost looks like he has class.
Right_of_Attila on November 17, 2008 at 1:28 PM
Yes, but that’s not what I said.
YOU said that UPINAK’s opinion was worthless. I’m asking where you get the right to say that.

Al-Ozarka = Huck troll
JustTruth101 on November 17, 2008 at 1:29 PM
For the record…I DO NOT think Palin is “dumb” I think Huckabee is smarter, more conservative, and a lot quicker on his feet in an interview or debate.
That’s not even debatable.
Al-Ozarka on November 17, 2008 at 1:30 PM
You just don’t get it do you? I don’t hate him, I’ve never met him.
I hate his ideas.
I hate his behavior.
I hate his lies.
I hate his politics.
But as with all Huckapoligists, you won’t talk about his record, because you lose the argument. For you it’s just “Huck Hate”, because your eyes are blinded to the stinking corruption of your Televangelist.

“IF ROMNEY HAD BEEN THE NOMINEE, WE WOULD HAVE PRESIDENT ELECT ROMNEY NOW, INSTEAD THE COURTS ARE LOST FOR 2 OR 3 “GENERATIONS. THANKS, HUCK!”
Why do you think he would have beaten Obama when he couldn’t beat Huckabee and McCain, despite spending a fortune and having the backing of the “establishment” conservatives?
Do you think he would have opposed the bailout? Has he taken a position on the bailout of GM?
kcewa on November 17, 2008 at 1:31 PM
Grue.
It’s MY OPINION!
God gave me the right.
Just like he gave you the right to have an opinion that disagrees with mine.
Al-Ozarka on November 17, 2008 at 1:31 PM
When the hell have I ever liked Huck? Sniffing glue again?
LevStrauss on November 17, 2008 at 1:31 PM
That’s it in a nutshell, friends.

Stop yelling…we can read. And really…to herald something as idiotic as this aloud is not very flattering for you.
Al-Ozarka on November 17, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Good point. I’m not religious, but I admire Palin and would vote for her again. Huckabee is a sham.

I believe the name of the song is “Just One Fix”……

Grue,
I suspect that if you get right down to it, you could state the same hates about every other potential GOP leader on the radar-screen.
