Guardian: Hillary says yes; Update: Or does she?

The golden age begins, my friends.
Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned…
Clinton would be well placed to become the country’s dominant voice in foreign affairs, replacing Condoleezza Rice. Since being elected senator for New York, she has specialised in foreign affairs and defence. Although she supported the war in Iraq, she and Obama basically agree on a withdrawal of American troops.
Clinton, who still harbours hopes of a future presidential run, had to weigh up whether she would be better placed by staying in the Senate, which offers a platform for life, or making the more uncertain career move to the secretary of state job.
The main stumbling block, supposedly, is the risk of governments trying to buy influence by donating to Bill’s charity, but (a) the public’s already assumed that risk, albeit to a lesser extent, per her role in the Senate and (b) like Conason says, it’s hard to believe The One would have made her an offer unless he’d already been given comfort about any major conflicts of interest lurking in the financial disclosures. Plus, it’s not like Billy Jeff’s an unmitigated liability: The only reason there are potential conflicts in the first place is because the Clintons have a preexisting line of political credit with the sorts of people she’ll be leaning on in her new job.
I never thought I’d see the day when the Standard, Commentary, and yours truly were all (relatively) pleased with Hillary Clinton being given a cabinet post, but here we are. Goes to show how much she rehabilitated herself with the right during the campaign, and how far a little Iran hawkishness can go in winning conservative hearts. And the best part? We’ll never want for drama again. Exit question: Er, why would the Guardian know this when American news outlets don’t?
Update: Hitch? Slightly less pleased.
Update: If the Guardian’s right then the news is breaking late, because both WaPo and CNN claimed this afternoon that Clinton’s finances were still being vetted. Maybe she accepted conditionally, i.e. if they pass the vetting?
Update: Ace says he’ll be surprised if she takes the job, as will I for reasons stated here. The only logic to it that I can see is if she thinks she can broker some sort of Mideast peace or deal with Iran that’ll secure her legacy.
Update: Peter Beinart doesn’t get it either, and wonders how Hillary’s going to deal with oversight not just from The One but from his NSA. I think that part of it, at least, is overblown: There’s no sense that Stephen Hadley has Condi Rice on some sort of short leash, for instance, and I’m sure Her Majesty would demand on some sort of concession from Obama up front about how free a hand she’d have.

Just an example about how overrated or underrated Senate “experience” can be. Clinton has little, Obama less, McCain and Biden have more and in the right areas but they are the big losers after this election.
McCain is essentially persona non grata among real Republicans for the way they were thrown under the straight talk express. Biden will actually become the VP but has been so absent from any discussion during and after the elections I’m beginning to think we need to put milk carton labels on bourbon bottles.

It is a little weird he didn’t take Kerry though. I mean he owes the guy huge by basically giving him his first shot of national exposure. (I’m not downplaying this, that speech in 2004 is the start of everything for him. Without it he wouldn’t have even been in the running for the 2007 campaign plus the early endorsement didn’t hurt either hurt.) Oh who am I kidding, he threw his grammy under the bus when it to his political advantage so no surprise he’d do the same thing to the guy who’s basically responsible for him being prez. Still, I don’t get what he gets out of this. (I mean if it’s to stop her running in 2012 he doesn’t need to do this. If he’s popular enough to win re-election then he’d beat any other dem easily. If not, well then all dems are up the creek anyway.)

Yup. Obama slashes the defense budget and McCain is left twisting in the wind.

I would be embarrassed to have that pompas ass John Kerry in the post, a walking talking sleeping pill.

Uhh…how exactly is she qualified for this job? We’re going from Condoleeza Rice, to Hillary Clinton? Jesus. One is clearly intellectually superior to the other.

Sounds like something Obama would do, it would certainly take her out of the picture in 2012. But if this report is accurate and she takes the position, I sure hope Obama has somebody other than Joe Biden to rely on for foreign policy expertise!

Hillary’s term would be filled this way:
1. Gov. Patterson would appoint a replacement who would serve until the next regular election in 2010;
2. In 2010, an election would be held. The winner would serve until 2012 (the conclusion of Sen. Clinton’s term); and
3. In 2012, another election would be held for a regular six-year term.
http://wnyt.com/article/stories/S662411.shtml?cat=10112
This sets up two NY senatorial elections in 2010 (with the regular expiration of Schumer’s 2nd term). Unfortunately, the NY Republican party sucks and only Guiliani would have a chance.

Umm, you all are missing the most important aspect of this:
An open US Senate seat in New York.
Not that we Republicans would have a great chance of winning her seat. But it’s a chance none-the-less.
Does Patterson get to appoint an interim replacement, or is there a special election?
Anybody know any prominent New York Republicans who could run for the seat?
We need someone with Gravitas, and also a Social Moderate.
Anyone?

You are not exhibiting the proper reverence for this incoming administration and the POTUS – Elect. We are dealing here with superior intellects. At least I think so. We still have not seen any of his school grades or thesis.***snort***
kingsjester on November 17, 2008 at 8:39 PM
Are you calling Hillary graceless? I’d agree. Diplomacy requires a certain vocabulary and set of skills that Hillary simply doesn’t have. Even failed SECSTATES like Albright and Powell understood that they had to speak in measured tones and broad sweeping meaningless rhetoric for about 90% of their workday.
A SECSTATE can never make it “all about me” which is a Clinton signature tactic. It’s also not the place to hang out if Hillary has visions that Obama will so screw things up she’ll be in a position to run for the Presidency in four years because she’d have to use that valuable political time supporting Bambi’s administration (which she would be a part of).
My guess is that there will be a great show of attempting to “find” a place for one or both of the Clintons in the upcoming regime. The offers will actually be poison pills for future political aspirations (which means Hillary needs to stay in the Senate where the morons from NY assure her employment for life). Even Obama is shrewd enough to understand that you don’t put a Clinton in place where they can leverage their own agenda.
As to your “loose cannon” theory, I don’t see it. Contrary to all the hype, Obama is not entering the Presidency from a position of strength. He doesn’t have a mandate by any measure. Fully half the nation distrusts his motives and is concerned about his utter lack of experience or qualification beyond the age/birth requirements of the Constitution. Any missteps by Obama’s cabinet will be blamed on his lack of qualification for office and inexperience. He simply doesn’t have the luxury of allowing Hillary Clinton hang herself in the court of public opinion.

That was actually very interesting. Despite his love for Obama, Matthews still has some lingering disgust for the Clintons. He certainly didn’t go easy on Eddie Haskell. Meanwhile, the Hitch states what we all know, that the Clintons are corrupt to the bone, but no one wants to hear it. As usual.

Not weird at all and why I don’t think Hillary is the first choice either. Obama isn’t coming to office in a position of strength. Kerry or Clinton (either) brings so much baggage that would be the story instead of whatever the hell Obama wants to accomplish- not that the bastard has ever made that clear.
With either a Clinton or Kerry choice, the story would always be a comparison about what Obama wants as opposed to the “what ifs” that are far more fun to consider than a SECSTATE on message for his/her boss.

I blame Pataki. We have one party Dem rule next year in NY — for the first time since the 20s. Pataki’s “moderation” helped destroy the NY GOP. They had just barely been clinging to power in the state senate. We have one of the worst, most corrupt state governments in the country.

if this country would elect Hillary after 8 yrs of Obama, it would definitely be the end of things as we know it at that point. political parties rarely hold power for more than 2 terms.
I guess if Obama is able to add enough new voters(hispanics)to the rolls, and white guilt liberals still exist in same numbers and blacks still vote overwhelmingly Dem, it could happen.

Hillary as SecState will be Hillary sidetracked. It will mean that Hill-Bill can move out of Chappaqua (improving the neighborhood) and back to Arkansas, or to Washington, or wherever they like. Even Manhattan sounds good.
It will also mean that we can watch Hillary making a fool of herself trying to represent what is sure to be an erratic policy. Not that I want it; if Obama actually does play International Chess effectively I will be glad. But far more likely is that she will be the mouthpiece of fecklessness. Very bad for the country, but less so because it is bad for Hillary’s reputation.

In the military (which Obama is about to lead) there is a truism that one can delegate authority but not accountability. I think you are right in Obama’s motives but he does it at his own peril because he will own the results of letting others lead.
highhopes on November 17, 2008 at 9:38 PM
Doesn’t that depend on what the bastard wants to do with foreign policy? I’m not convinced he has figured that out now. His election reminds me of the film The Candidate where Robert Redford’s character knew how to get elected but didn’t have a clue how to be a Senator. In 2008 we’ve got a real-life sequel. Obama knew how to distance himself from terrorists, racists, criminals, and extremists enough to get elected but he doesn’t have a clue what to do now that he has been elected. For all the hype, his transition team has no real guidance about what kind of people will help Obama further his agenda because the bastard doesn’t have one and the few hints about what he wants to do are so broad in scope they will never pass the cold hard reality of daily operative politics.

Goes to show you I’d rather trust Sarah Palin than an egoist like Hitchens, or Obama for that matter.
Imagine, Hitch and Co. were telling us “Obama is so smart” blah blah blah. Wrong again elitists!
Richard Romano on November 17, 2008 at 9:58 PM
First the obvious. Presidents are elected by, we the people, and don’t have to be confirmed by the Senate. No scrutiny and embarrassing questions other than those they avoid during the elections. How do you suppose a terrorist sympathizing, racist Christian, socialist friend of criminals just got elected? Hillary Clinton looks like Mother Theresa in comparison with the corrupt anti-American bastard who actually won the election. Obama did it all by smoke, mirrors, and MSM advocacy and America will suffer as a result.
Secondly, I disagree with Morris. The Senate refuses to get involved with this advise and consent stuff. So long as a nominee isn’t a conservative Catholic with “too white” kids, they get a complete pass. Even then, they are likely to get an easy confirmation so long as the opposition can’t find a rabid liberal to accuse the nominee without providing proof. In any case, it is only if the conservative nominee suffers through his/her entire character attacked and his/her spouse accused of wearing a suit that looks like sofa fabric by the whorish Washington Post fashion propagandist that the confirmation holds. Liberals don’t even get that level of superficial scrutiny. Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s ideas about legalizing prostitution alone, not her dracula-like persona, should have disqualified her if the Senate wanted to really advise before providing consent.

Hillary Clinton or John Kerry as Secretary of State. This thing is becoming a farce.
ddrintn on November 17, 2008 at 10:03 PM
There are really only three things required to be President. 35 years of age; Natural born Citizen (and that is getting more flexible, perhaps) and the big one: Con enough people / steal enough votes to get elected.
You can be previously convicted of treason, rape, murder, fraud and robbery and if you get the votes, you get the job.
There are no requirements for a security clearance, or anything.
Getting confirmed through the Senate for a cabinet position actually requires certain other things, even if it is going to be a rubber stamp by a compliant / complicit body. (They can ignore them, but they gotta go through the motions.)
Doesn’t make much sense, but that’s the way it is.

What a coward. She refused to stand up to her husband, who treated her like feces and then rode his coattails into office (the Senate). She refused to stand up to another man who tried to destroy her (when she gave politically correct answers to O’Reilly about Jeremiah Wright) and is now riding his coattails into another office.
She seems to enjoy submitting to men who hate her. I wish she were a bitch; at least she’s have some guts.

And I’d be wary of riding the train with Biden.

Well, Allah, you didn’t use the goofy picture of Hillary like you’ve been doing lately. I think that’s my old school uniform she’s got on!

Don’t believe it.
Hillary was not good enough to be VP – wasn’t even asked or really considered so the rumors go, but yet she is good enough to be Secretary of State? Hmmmm….
And if Hillary was Secretary of State PLUS you add all the other former Clinton people going into the Obama administration then they have the makings of a 3rd Clinton term.
Will Bill Clinton be secretly pulling all the strings of the administration via his contacts? Even the rumors of it are not good for the Obama legacy. The “first black President” running things for the first black President...
(And if Hillary is given a post and Bill “Judas” Richardson denied…well, that would show the Clintons are in charge.)
Just can’t believe it happening – Hillary as Secretary of State. Anybody talk to John Kerry lately?

As one speaking from the other side of the Atlantic, the Obama presidency does not bode well for us Europeans. He will probably make the US more like Europe, when some over here would like Europe to be more like the US. My particular concern is mostly his foreign policy. I do not see Hillary accepting, really, it would probably all become an internal Clash of the Titans. BUT, if it happened, I personally would be happier, for one. She has principle, and at least we can tell where she stands.
