Guardian: Hillary says yes; Update: Or does she?

posted at 7:27 pm on November 17, 2008 by Allahpundit

The golden age begins, my friends.

Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned…

Clinton would be well placed to become the country’s dominant voice in foreign affairs, replacing Condoleezza Rice. Since being elected senator for New York, she has specialised in foreign affairs and defence. Although she supported the war in Iraq, she and Obama basically agree on a withdrawal of American troops.

Clinton, who still harbours hopes of a future presidential run, had to weigh up whether she would be better placed by staying in the Senate, which offers a platform for life, or making the more uncertain career move to the secretary of state job.

The main stumbling block, supposedly, is the risk of governments trying to buy influence by donating to Bill’s charity, but (a) the public’s already assumed that risk, albeit to a lesser extent, per her role in the Senate and (b) like Conason says, it’s hard to believe The One would have made her an offer unless he’d already been given comfort about any major conflicts of interest lurking in the financial disclosures. Plus, it’s not like Billy Jeff’s an unmitigated liability: The only reason there are potential conflicts in the first place is because the Clintons have a preexisting line of political credit with the sorts of people she’ll be leaning on in her new job.

I never thought I’d see the day when the Standard, Commentary, and yours truly were all (relatively) pleased with Hillary Clinton being given a cabinet post, but here we are. Goes to show how much she rehabilitated herself with the right during the campaign, and how far a little Iran hawkishness can go in winning conservative hearts. And the best part? We’ll never want for drama again. Exit question: Er, why would the Guardian know this when American news outlets don’t?

Update: Hitch? Slightly less pleased.

Update: If the Guardian’s right then the news is breaking late, because both WaPo and CNN claimed this afternoon that Clinton’s finances were still being vetted. Maybe she accepted conditionally, i.e. if they pass the vetting?

Update: Ace says he’ll be surprised if she takes the job, as will I for reasons stated here. The only logic to it that I can see is if she thinks she can broker some sort of Mideast peace or deal with Iran that’ll secure her legacy.

Update: Peter Beinart doesn’t get it either, and wonders how Hillary’s going to deal with oversight not just from The One but from his NSA. I think that part of it, at least, is overblown: There’s no sense that Stephen Hadley has Condi Rice on some sort of short leash, for instance, and I’m sure Her Majesty would demand on some sort of concession from Obama up front about how free a hand she’d have.

Strangely, this is a wonderful thing. Imagine how bad it could have been, hmmm?

clnurnberg on November 17, 2008 at 7:30 PM

But what does Michelle Obama say? Perhaps she concurs in LBJ’s philosophy of how to deal with rivals: “Better to have them inside the tent pissing out than outside the tent pissing in”?

Wethal on November 17, 2008 at 7:31 PM

Is Bill in Europe again?

upinak on November 17, 2008 at 7:31 PM

I won’t believe it until she says it’s true.

jukin on November 17, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Well, good news for New York. How about some good news for Massachusetts now?

ctmom on November 17, 2008 at 7:32 PM

I don’t see this as a good thing.

So… what DID the New Yorkers get for the last 6 years?

Skywise on November 17, 2008 at 7:32 PM

The One thereby assures that no matter how craptastic his 1st term is he will not be defeated by the ultimate “I told you so” candidate. The Clintons also risk taking the fall and all the blame once things get bad on the foreign policy front. Obama has bought himself a fall guy (or gal) and political safety from his chief rival in one fell swoop. Well played.

BrianBoru on November 17, 2008 at 7:33 PM

Well, it will make those 3 am phone calls to Hillary asking what to do a little less embarressing. He can legitimately “consult” with his SoS.

Wethal on November 17, 2008 at 7:33 PM

This Obama cabinet will most likely be interesting at the very least.

Carl on November 17, 2008 at 7:34 PM

This guy doesn’t have any of his own friends that can get a security clearance does he. He is bringing all of the Clinton’s thugs to run his administration.

cjs1943 on November 17, 2008 at 7:34 PM

On the bright side…if Hillary is the SecState in a failed Administration, assuming we will be met with any number of foreign policy Gordian Knot’s over the next four years…she has squandered political capital precipitously. In 2012, if Obama’s foreign policies result in harm to America, or any number of American allies, Hillary will no longer be a viable 2012 candidate.

coldwarrior on November 17, 2008 at 7:34 PM

How is it a conflict when Hillary divorces Bill Clinton? When Hillary lost in the primaries, the last reason for this faux marriage to continue disappeared. Obama has the nomination locked up for 2012 even if he is universally despised by that point. That makes Hillary McCain-like ancient by the time she gets her next turn. She doesn’t need Bill and Bill hasn’t needed her for over eight years.

That being said, she’s an idiot if she attaches herself to a real public policy position in a Presidential administration. Given the rampant stupidity of New Yorkers she can stay in the Senate for life.

highhopes on November 17, 2008 at 7:35 PM

My collie says:

What better use for a mean b*tch than to sick her on foreign dignitaries? Is that it, then?

I’m not so sure that this is a good idea.

Of course, I’m sure BillyJeff is ALL FOR IT. Hillary will be on travel — a lot.

CyberCipher on November 17, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Hillary will be on the job until after the Nov 2010 midterms.

She will have inside knowledge of the Obama administration

and will use that as leverage in her bid for the 2012

presidential race.

izoneguy on November 17, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Well Hitch, you voted him in. I don’t see how you have any place to complain.

MadisonConservative on November 17, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Btw, 6 years ago she was busy fighting off Rick Lazio and had zero foreign policy experience if you don’t count junkets and photo ops as First Lady. Now she may be the Secretary of State. This is another example of how fast things can change.

BrianBoru on November 17, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Secretary of State is a weak position…wimpy diplomats… for the most part, the only thing they can do is weaken strong US positions. The last one worth anything was Baker under Bush 41.

I guess she’s better than Kerry or Richardson, but to me, this is a figurehead. The most important pick is Sec. of Defense. That’s the one to watch. McCain?
Best pick under the circumstances. I know I would feel better.

joepub on November 17, 2008 at 7:37 PM

He’s not going to choose her. Just trying to look like he’s reaching out.

orfannkyl on November 17, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Hitch? Slightly less pleased.

Tough. He voted for The One, he was going to get Clinton and her cronies at some point.

amerpundit on November 17, 2008 at 7:38 PM

is it me or is Chrissy Matthews getting upset that Hilary is being picked?

upinak on November 17, 2008 at 7:38 PM

Btw, 6 years ago she was busy fighting off Rick Lazio

Excuse me, 8 yrs ago. How time flies when you are having fun.

BrianBoru on November 17, 2008 at 7:38 PM

She is definitely good for the status quo.

She is also good for Republicans. This is change I remember from the 90’s.

Spirit of 1776 on November 17, 2008 at 7:39 PM

I have some friends in New York. They are jumping with JOY! I am wondering, if The One, will hire her. Then claim she wasn’t cutting it. Then fire her? She is out of the Senate now. Guess we wait to see.

sheebe on November 17, 2008 at 7:39 PM

After her stint as SOS, what state will they move to then? She won’t go back to being a senator from NY. Maybe they’ll move to CA to be with their Hollywood friends. No, they went over to BO’s camp. What a predictment.

cjs1943 on November 17, 2008 at 7:39 PM

If she turns it down, I wait for the hypocritical, “The voters of New York sent me to DC for a six-year term, and I have an obligation to serve it out…”

Wethal on November 17, 2008 at 7:40 PM

I know why the Messiah wants to give her the post (keep enemies close), but I’m not sure why she wants to accept. Perhaps, she thinks that stabbing the Messiah in the back from State will work well.

Illinidiva on November 17, 2008 at 7:40 PM

This is actually good news. Have you heard of anybody who went to the State Dept who has not wound up permanently damaged goods politically?

Just A Grunt on November 17, 2008 at 7:41 PM

I eagerly await the day she is testifying in front of Congress about some catastrophic Obama administration blunder and has to defend him.

This is inevitable.

Jim62sch on November 17, 2008 at 7:41 PM

Wow.

Well, it gets her out of the way, in case Obama royally screws up, in 4 years.

JetBoy on November 17, 2008 at 7:41 PM

Who cares what Hitchens says now? Who did he imagine would be in Obama’s cabinet, Rashid Kahlidi? Maybe that’s what he was cheering for? How brilliant, how new, how changey?

Jim62sch on November 17, 2008 at 7:42 PM

I thought we were supposed to improve our image and “moral standing” around the world with a BO presidency.

Guess Barry scrapped that idea, too.

Imagine all the swag Hillary can collect selling American defense technology to foreign governments in this gig!

Cicero43 on November 17, 2008 at 7:43 PM

Sec. of State is a very compromising position. Look how bad Powell and Rice have been in it. Neither accomplished much. It is a great decision by Obama. Very high profile to assuage her ego and he gets to keep her right where he wants her. She will be the fall guy for any huge foreign policy disaster. She will fall just like Icarus for having flown too close to the One. I mean, the sun!

JAM on November 17, 2008 at 7:43 PM

I guess I should have some consolation that she’s not being offered a SCOTUS position.

:-(

OTOH if she’s tough and puts NObama in his place then it’ll make it all the more sweeter. But never trust a Clinton.

Domino on November 17, 2008 at 7:44 PM

Obama and Clinton are both Alinsky trainees. This could be just Obama playing politics, or it could be something very, very bad in the making.

I, myself, was not too enthused about change, so back to the 90s is OK with me. The Clintons and friends will be a moderating influence.

What the hell is Hitchens doing sober?

hillbillyjim on November 17, 2008 at 7:47 PM

Given the other options I’m okay with Clinton. Still not sure why she’d really want it considering that he could force her out at basically any point (Michelle’s pissed at her, Bill’s getting on Axelrod’s nerves, etc.).

Ya know, this is a perfect set up for Bill to also step in at the UN. Bill runs (appeases)at the UN. Hill (cuts &) runs US diplomacy and Obama runs (taxes) our economy into the ground.

The trifecta of cowardice. There’s some hope and change, baby!

Is anyone taking out extra life insurance on Dear Leader, VP Biden, President pro tem of the Senate and Speaker of the House? (I think that’s the line of succession)

(Just kidding)

rbj on November 17, 2008 at 7:50 PM

I wonder if:

She’s been told by the current Dem powers-that-be that she cannot consider challenging thr One in 2012. No divisive 1976-like primaries.

She has no desire to be another Teddy Kennedy power-in-the senate for the rest of her life.

Harry Reid is not going to leave as SML. And Hillary as SML could be a competing president.

She’s been told SCOTUS is out because Obama will only nominate sitting judges who can be prestented as having outstanding judicial (albeit liberal) credentials.

Wethal on November 17, 2008 at 7:50 PM

While Obama wants to neutralize Sen. Clinton as a potential rival in 2012, he has to be careful. Clinton associates have this odd, coincidental habit of dying untimely. Hence, if I were Obama, I would not offer Ms. Clinton anything so close in the line of succession.

How does Hillary benefit from taking the job? I haven’t heard anyone make a compelling argument for her taking it. I don’t think being the SoS helps her 2012 chances. Personally, I think talk of Clinton in 2012 is stupid no matter what she does. Shit would have really had to hit the fan and Obama would have had to do something incredibly stupid for there to be any chance for Hillary.

SteveMG on November 17, 2008 at 7:57 PM

OK, the wild conspiracy corner of my mind is on overdrive…I wonder what she knows about the Obama administration in terms of forced longevity through the repeal of the 22 ammendment? Does she know that this administration is going to go for a looong time and this is the best shot she will have in this lifetime for any semblance of real power to satiate her needs. I’m having a hard time believing this woman is giving up on the Presidency in 2012.

Geochelone on November 17, 2008 at 8:03 PM

Hillary lacks the finesse and light touch a Secretary of State requires. Maybe Obama plans to let her run loose until she makes such a fool of herself that she’s no longer a threat in national politics?

snaggletoothie on November 17, 2008 at 8:04 PM

So the woman who, according to Obama, “only attended tea parties overseas” will be his Secretary of State? Does this mean Obama really IS going to rely on the clown he put in the Vice President’s office for his foreign policy experience. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

Dee2008 on November 17, 2008 at 8:05 PM

The One would have made her an offer unless he’d already been given comfort about any major conflicts of interest lurking in the financial disclosures.

Hmmmmm. I think you give Obama too much credit. He doesn’t seem to be very concerned with conflicts of interest. (Think Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.) From my perspective (north of y’all), it seems that conflicts of interest are rife in Congress and the Senate. But perhaps when it comes to foreign powers they are taken more seriously (except when it comes to scrutinizing Obama’s foreign campaign donations, that is)?

ProfessorMiao on November 17, 2008 at 8:10 PM

hooray, I think this is a great indication that we will be far more moderate in our foreign policy than the Berlinapalooza suggested.

And thank Gawd, I have been seriously fearful for Israel and I know Hillary will stand by them,. If Livni wins and wants to negotiate a pullback, Hillary will I believe help get it done without hopefully anyone giving up the Golan Heights.

I am way out of my depth on this background but Hillary is a wonky goddess and a work horse who is well respected internationally and a hawk for our protection and for Israel. I couldnt be happier. I was dreading Kerry or Richardson.

ginaswo on November 17, 2008 at 8:12 PM

I still don’t believe that in the end Hillary will accept it.

If she does, either she is stupider than I thought, or she and Bill have figured out some sort of international scam that they can pull off easier with her as SoS than as Senator.

I can only think of one of the latter. Hill’ry as SoS could team up with Soros, (with Bill as the bagman), and really wreak some major havoc and make some major profit.

I agree. We need to maintain seats in the Senate. With BO’s propensity for throwing people under the bus, anyone who has lost elections to him, better watch out. They will be expendable, and probably sooner than later. Any problems with national security, and BO would use McCain as the fall guy, thereby, making mid-terms and 2012 difficult.
Both McCain and Hillary would be fools.
