Quote of the day
posted at 10:00 pm on November 16, 2008 by Allahpundit
Kroft: There’s been talk on Capitol Hill and a number of Democratic congressmen have proposed programs that are part of sort of a new New Deal. The possibility of reviving agencies like the Home Ownership Loan Corporation.
Mr. Obama: Two points I’d make on this. Number one, although there are some parallels to the problems that we’re seeing now and what we say back in the ’30s, no period is exactly the same. For us to simply recreate what existed back in the ’30s in the 21st century, I think would be missing the boat. We’ve gotta come up with solutions that are true to our times and true to this moment. And that’s gonna be our job. I think the basic principle that government has a role to play in kick starting an economy that has ground to a halt is sound.
I think our basic principle that this is a free market system and that that has worked for us, that it creates innovation and risk taking, I think that’s a principle that we’ve gotta hold to as well. But what I don’t wanna do is get bottled up in a lot of ideology and is this conservative or liberal. My interest is finding something that works.
And whether it’s coming from FDR or it’s coming from Ronald Reagan, if the idea is right for the times then we’re gonna apply it. And things that don’t work we’re gonna get rid of.

I’m no economic expert, but it seems to me that the lending business requires trust, and that can’t be bought by throwing more promises and more paper. Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac laundered TRUST, and unless and until that is addressed and fixed, all the paper money in the world is not gonna earn trust.
The government’ promises are empty because the government is the mob. You can’t buy trust, you can only earn it. This government hasn’t, Barack Obama hasn’t, and nothing either one of them do is going to win that back among people who live in the real world.
Obama says the government will do whatever it takes to fix the economy. I’d say throwing a bunch of crooks in office and passing reforms to make sure they can never screw the American people again would be a nice start. But that’s not what he meant. He meant the government will make as many empty promises as he thinks it’ll take. Ain’t gonna work.
Just my take on it.

Some people seem to forget that we were attacked, not once but several times before we started doing something about it.
Ayers, Wright and these other ding-dongs have repeatedly said this was all our fault and we had it coming. They’ve never given a reason why and how we had it coming. Just what did the US do to deserve to be attacked?
Except for our moral direction and the money we dole out to the very people/countries that hate us, I don’t see what needs changing about our moral stature in the world.

mildly off-topic rant warning
It is a fact now that one in six mortgages are upside down at this point. Regardless of ability to pay those mortgages, that is a lot of potential spending (debt) lost to this economy.
It is also a fact that credit companies are lowering the credit limits of one in five customers. That lowered debt ceiling also affects the potential growth of our economy in the near future.
Those two facts alone point to an economy that won’t be cured by government stimulus of any sort.
17 to 20% of our economy has effectively been put in a cash only purchase position, which is hard to do when that same percentage is heavily debt-laden.
My prediction is that this economy will not heal as a whole until it retracts from the frivolity of today’s society, shucks the shackles of feel-good green policies, and puts people to work in energy and manufacturing production.
This economy won’t grow until it shrinks to the point of buying necessities with cash as opposed to satisfying our desires of the day.
Let’s see…granite countertops, or a simple new refrigerator?
Family plan cell phones, Cable internet and tv…or a sensible economical car?
The list could go on and on, but you get the idea.
Our needs have long since been met, and much of our economy has been directed towards our wants and wishes, and that is a lot of jobs to be shed.
The pessimist in me and the realist in me agree that three to five years of protracted recession lie ahead.
Government may want to help, and government may try to help, but little will improve our situation until we are allowed to produce the energy we need and the products the world needs.
PS think how galling it is that we need the government to allow us to produce that which is good for us.
OneEyedJack on November 16, 2008 at 11:41 PM

When the buck stops at your desk, even if you try to throw it under the bus, everyone with half a brain already knows the buck is still on your desk.
Times for promises are over. In a couple of months it will be time to deliver. If Bush was so bad, it shouldn’t be a very difficult bar to jump over.
The world loves us, so no more terroism. High taxes is the way to go so everyone but the rich should be happy, unless the rich decide to stop spending their money, which they have according to a freind of mine who build yachts for a living.
We are quickly approaching where the rubber meets the road. Where talk no longer matters, just results.
