NFL Sunday open thread: Steelers vs Chargers

Last week, I wrote that I deserved a break after watching Notre Dame get beat and Barack Obama get elected with larger Democratic majorities. Did I get that break? Nope. Ben Roethlisberger threw three key interceptions that allowed the Indianapolis Colts to steal the game away from the Steelers.
Today they play the San Diego Chargers, another team mired in mediocrity, at Heinz Field. Can Big Ben recover his early-season form and beat the 4-5 Chargers? If not, the Steelers will lose their grip on the division lead and have a very difficult time regaining momentum. They still have to face New England, Baltimore, and unbeaten Tennessee in the remaining weeks of the season.
What will your favorite teams do today? What are your predictions? I’ll say that my luck will continue from yesterday’s Notre Dame victory and Pittsburgh will beat San Diego at home, 27-17.

“I am so bitter, so very very BITTER”
Grab hold of your shootin’ iron and your bible, Obama wants both.
Here we go Steelers, here we go!
NoDonkey on November 16, 2008 at 8:03 PM
Oh joy, it’s “green week” at NBC. That moron, Olberidiot was just driveling/mumbling about saving plastic bottles…
Zorro on November 16, 2008 at 8:14 PM
That’s on you for watching NBC, I’ve got ESPN on. Much safer, ObamaUberAllesMann doesn’t darken ESPN.
NoDonkey on November 16, 2008 at 8:17 PM
Dallas at Redskins on… where else can we watch it??
Zorro on November 16, 2008 at 8:23 PM
There is no question, Keith Olbermann is a certified oxygen thief.
Zorro on November 16, 2008 at 8:25 PM
Vntnrse got ticked off and went to Comedy Central to watch Blue Collar Comedy Tour and then Larry the Cable Guy Health Inspector. I refuse to watch NBC as long as Olberhitler is on NBC/MSNBC!
Vntnrse on November 16, 2008 at 8:26 PM
“Dallas at Redskins on… where else can we watch it??”
Watch it until half-time and then immediately switch channels so you won’t have to watch Obama’s errand boy spew inanities.
NoDonkey on November 16, 2008 at 8:28 PM
Springsteen is serenading Obama at half time. I almost had tickets to this game. I am so glad that fell through.
CookeyD on November 16, 2008 at 8:30 PM
That wasn’t a um kick ass game. Thought the Steelers would have stolen some more Touch Downs……….
sheebe on November 16, 2008 at 8:32 PM
“Springsteen is serenading Obama at half time.”
Uh-oh, Olby’s going to be jealous, he might scratch the Bosses eyes out.
NoDonkey on November 16, 2008 at 8:35 PM
Incidentally, that’s the first 11-10 game in NFL history, according to ESPN.

I don’t like the Steelers. However, I was pulling for them tonight despite the goofy colors and the endemic and universal love of Democrats in that organization.
Why? I have never gotten over the 1994 AFC Championship game so I wish the Chargers ill for all time!
The Steelers had a defense for the ages that year and it was built to face the ‘west coast’ offense like that in San Francisco at the time. Rod Woodson was a big part of it and they thrived at shuting down the slants, short curls and etc. I wanted to see them face San Francisco.
Then San Diego came to Pittsburgh in January. I laughed at the prospect of the beach boy bolts playing in frigid temps.
Well, it was 70 degrees at game time. The only defense the bolts had was some fatties that could clog the middle and stuff the run. And the Steelers were predominately a running team. HA.
Based on a trick toss to the tight end and the Steelers failure to convert on fourth and goal from the four, the Chargers beat the Steelers and went to the Super Bowl with a pass defense rated 30th. Yes, 30th. To look up some guy named Joe Montana who looked at the Charger offense and must have thought all the prayers he said at Notre Dame had been answered. He was quoted as saying “I can’t wait.”
Meantime, the Chargers danced at home and bragged about how they kicked Pittsburgh’s rear. They also claimed to be the best team in years. They were mostly a one trick pony but it worked for them.
I wanted to see a game for the ages and instead watched some key elements and breaks put a pathetic contestant in a zero sum game with a skilled and relentless foe. A disaster followed.
Strange how that can happen. Do you think it could happen (has happened) in our presidential election process?
IlikedAUH2O on November 16, 2008 at 8:51 PM
Go Seahawks, perpetual heart breakers, though they “was robbed” in Super Bowl against the Steelers. Therefore, I will never cheer for them…unless they play Chicago.
rlwo2008 on November 16, 2008 at 9:08 PM
Titans 10-0, and all the media wants to talk about is the GIANTS.
This Titans team could go all the way.
ZzzzDad on November 16, 2008 at 9:11 PM
There’s never been a 11-10 game in NFL history?!
That’s insane!
YYZ on November 16, 2008 at 9:50 PM
All’s I gotta say is, that was a hellava game!
…even if the Chargers lost. :-)
RedbonePro on November 16, 2008 at 9:50 PM
Didn’t see you on the field, fornicating face, let’s just hope we don’t meet on a street corner…………. Especially in San Diego.
Seven Percent Solution on November 16, 2008 at 9:54 PM
Detroit Lions: 0-10 Baby! C’mon 0-16.
I pick them to lose next week too. I always pick them to lose. Any bailout of the big 3 should be conditional on the Fords having to sell the Lions.
Canadian Infidel on November 16, 2008 at 9:58 PM
Hey NBC — F**K off! Quit polluting the NFL with your silly little green agenda. If you had any principles, you’d refuse to broadcast any football game with an artificial field. NBC? Principles? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH what BS.
Fishoutofwater on November 16, 2008 at 10:01 PM
It hasn’t happened in 12,873 NFL games, according to ESPN.
First time ever.
wccawa on November 16, 2008 at 10:05 PM
BTW, I’m offended at the green Peacock NFL logo. At least the rainbow peacock promoted diversity and all. And while you’re at it, isn’t the NFL’s carbon footprint just too egregious for you asswipes to be involved with? All the helmets, pads and uniforms – made from oil-based plastics! Artificial turf? Don’t even go there. NFL Cheerleaders? They’re just exploitation on a massive scale. Dammit – Plus, in the NFL – THEY KEEP SCORE!!!!! WTF? All outcomes are supposed to be EQUAL!!! Let’s not even talk about “mascots” like “Redskins”, “Cowboys”, etc – they should all just be football “Clubs” or something that doesn’t offend me. Oops, If I can’t get into their “Clubs” that makes them DISCRIMINATORS!!!!
Oh well, Thanks NBC for ruining football for the rest of us.
Fishoutofwater on November 16, 2008 at 10:13 PM
First time on here but, I am proud to report that I was at the STEELER game (SEAT 111 14 gg) tonight. There was a young man appx. 7 years old behind me in the club seats with mom and dad and he was cheering for the Chargers, although the parents wore Black and Gold. I turned to the child and asked him why he was for the Chargers and he said “I don’t know”.
I said “OH, Just like an Obama supporter”.
They all left within seconds and THIS IS A TRUE STORY.
CBFLATLINE on November 16, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Woot! Steelers win!
RobertCSampson on November 16, 2008 at 10:58 PM
Heh, any chance the refs will hold a press conference doing some explainin’ as to why they took away that TD? Or why they were babying SD?
Heck I am bitter, dumped in snow for the rest of this week (at least till Wed). Gonna show my DH that Mormon video on food preservation/storage see if I can get him to change his mind and start stocking up. And kitty litter for the car.
Can somebody call Al Gore and have him explain to me why are we having a winter storm before Thanksgiving, and not sunbathing a-la-Caribbean?
ProudPalinFan on November 16, 2008 at 11:16 PM
Woot!
My Titans are 10-0 BABY!
powerpro on November 17, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Yep, Titans are my team too. But the New York Giants are going to get more coverage regardless. Plus they’re the champs til someone knocks them off.
ddrintn on November 17, 2008 at 12:07 AM
The GIANTS baby…the Titans-Jets game next week should be good…
DCJeff on November 17, 2008 at 12:14 AM
First, Steve Young was the Niner QB, and yes, Obama could get shellacked with huge economic and foreign policy problems that make it obvious that his and the Dem Congress’s solutions are a disaster.
Although our currency has had a short-term run up due to the slowing economy worlwide, many other countries are better postitioned to get out of the recession sooner than us and we have a government that wants to reinforce foolish behavior in personal, government, and business areas by creating more debt and adding more money supply. Eventually, the US dollar will continue it’s generational slide as many nations gradually ween themselves off of it and find other reserve currencies. The party may be over. Also, be careful buying gold. Much of gold demand is driven by jewelry which is more of a luxury.
Sapwolf on November 17, 2008 at 12:23 AM
Albama and the Titans, undefeated through another week.
Some kickin good news before the Messiah goes to the White House. Get out your palm fronds people and pave the road for him.
Sapwolf on November 17, 2008 at 12:25 AM
Carolina Panthers: 8-2
They’ll probably have to win at NY in January to make the Super Bowl, but I think they’re built for it. Great defense, running game and special teams. One or two big plays from Steve Smith and it’s on to The Big Game!
Mr. Wednesday Night on November 17, 2008 at 2:19 AM
I have a hard time feeling sorry for you Ed. I am a Lion’s fan. And I gave up on the Lions this year after the first quarter of the first game.
NotCoach on November 17, 2008 at 2:55 AM
I didn’t watch the SB game between San Diego and San Francisco. I had a feeling it wouldn’t be much. So I didn’t know about Steve Young. I did hear that the Niners were pulling their starters early. That is sad.
SAPWOLF rules.
Sevenpercentsolution I am confused. After the suggestive remark about my face — do you think you like me and that is why you want to see me on the streetcorner? You need to find another web site.
Finally, I thought the Steelers needed four yards and now I find some saying that they needed three.
Well, those facts just destroy the whole metaphor don’t they?
IlikedAUH2O on November 17, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Hey, if it’s any consolation, the Giants and their fans had to put up with an off-season of stories about how they’d finish third at best in their division this year, behind Dallas and Philadelphia, and be lucky to make the playoffs after winning it all last season.
If the Titans beat Favre and the Jets next week in the CBS early national game, then they’ll start getting more respect from the national media.
jon1979 on November 17, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Thank God we got a win Ed. That was the CRAZIEST game I ever did see. I couldn’t believe they changed the score after the game ended! It was the first 11-10 score on NFL history so I was happy Troy lost his TD.
The rest of the games are gonna be tough.
