Hottest October on record … was really a September

posted at 9:42 am on November 16, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The main statistical facility for global-warming activists compounded error with folly and have undermined their credibility entirely.  NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies announced that last month was the warmest October on record, surprising meteorologists who had seen colder temperatures and unseasonal snowstorms and wondered where all the heat originated:

GISS’s computerised temperature maps seemed to show readings across a large part of Russia had been up to 10 degrees higher than normal. But when expert readers of the two leading warming-sceptic blogs, Watts Up With That and Climate Audit, began detailed analysis of the GISS data they made an astonishing discovery. The reason for the freak figures was that scores of temperature records from Russia and elsewhere were not based on October readings at all. Figures from the previous month had simply been carried over and repeated two months running.

The error was so glaring that when it was reported on the two blogs – run by the US meteorologist Anthony Watts and Steve McIntyre, the Canadian computer analyst who won fame for his expert debunking of the notorious “hockey stick” graph – GISS began hastily revising its figures. This only made the confusion worse because, to compensate for the lowered temperatures in Russia, GISS claimed to have discovered a new “hotspot” in the Arctic – in a month when satellite images were showing Arctic sea-ice recovering so fast from its summer melt that three weeks ago it was 30 per cent more extensive than at the same time last year.

When outside analysts showed that GISS used September temperatures in Russia for its conclusions about October, GISS admitted that it has no quality control over the numbers is uses for its analysis:

A GISS spokesman lamely explained that the reason for the error in the Russian figures was that they were obtained from another body, and that GISS did not have resources to exercise proper quality control over the data it was supplied with. This is an astonishing admission: the figures published by Dr Hansen’s institute are not only one of the four data sets that the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) relies on to promote its case for global warming, but they are the most widely quoted, since they consistently show higher temperatures than the others.

And Dr. James Hansen, one of Al Gore’s chief allies on his global-warming crusade, has cooked the books before, as have his associates:

Yet last week’s latest episode is far from the first time Dr Hansen’s methodology has been called in question. In 2007 he was forced by Mr Watts and Mr McIntyre to revise his published figures for US surface temperatures, to show that the hottest decade of the 20th century was not the 1990s, as he had claimed, but the 1930s.

Another of his close allies is Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the IPCC, who recently startled a university audience in Australia by claiming that global temperatures have recently been rising “very much faster” than ever, in front of a graph showing them rising sharply in the past decade. In fact, as many of his audience were aware, they have not been rising in recent years and since 2007 have dropped.

NASA must investigate this episode at GISS and insist on reliable production of accurate statistics.  If they have scientists who can’t tell September from October and can’t recognize a cooling cycle in the Arctic, then they need new leadership at GISS, starting with Hansen.  The admission from GISS that they can’t verify their source data when reaching to conclusions should embarrass scientists throughout the profession, as verification of data is absolutely necessary before reaching any conclusions.  Without that, GISS may as well be studying the entrails of goats to make predictions about the future climate.

The politicization of science will continue and get worse…especially now that the left has gained a decisive role in appointing the people in the agencies that monitor this stuff. They will continue to manufacture whatever data they need to support their claims and advance the GE agenda…this is a case where it is not incompetence, so much as willful distortion. It’s clear that Hansen and his team will do whatever is necessary to support their political agenda…and now have an administration that will gladly expand and enlarge their efforts.

We fail to understand that science is still based on reality. Science now is based solely on getting money from bureaucrats so you can keep your career. If you think that life came from anything other than lightning striking mud, you’re screwed. The earth has been cooling for a decade and “scientists” call that global warming.

Oh well, time for my leeching visit with the apothecary to drain out my imbalanced bodily humors.

BTW Go watch the movie “Expelled” by Ben Stein. It will illuminate this new attitude we find in “scientists” for you.

It’s too late, however. The damage has been done, the headlines written and the communion wafer of Warming has been swallowed again.

How long before we see some reporter with laser-like focus ask some non-believer what they think about October being the warmest on record? Oh, send them to Alaska to beat up on SP with this nonsense.

When you can’t put a finger on any truth, and then you can’t trust the media’s science, we have nothing left but po-mo mysticism.

We may as well worship fire.

I just woke up to 2 inches of snow. The most insidious thing about this global warming theory is that it prospers in the minds of the public despite all the anecdotal evidence to the contrary right in front of them. The brain washing has been so successful, that no matter what actually happens to the weather or temperature, no matter how cold it gets where you live, no matter how much snow you get that you normally don’t, no matter how many record breaking cold days you get every winter, the narrative of global “warming” advances. The propaganda has already indoctrinated the public into disassociating the weather outside from the narrative. They are saying, “Who do you believe, us, or your lying eyes.”

With all the new, and more accurate date coming out, it looks like Al Gore will soon be out of a job. The whole thing was about money and control by the environmentalists.

Scientists who came out in opposition of it in the beginning were at risk of losing their jobs and were mocked.

I never drank that Global-Warming-junk-science-kool-aid and have taken a lot of criticism for it.

It will take a while to undo the damage, but believe it will be…. eventually. Remember, some used to believe the world was flat.

Once again, an organization with a liberal agenda commits a type of fraud, and I have to come all the way here to learn about it. If some conservative cooked up numbers on something like the caribou population, I would have heard about it on the five-o-clock news, the six-o-clock news, 20/20, the eleven-o-clock news…

I guess you get the point.

Sir Corky on November 16, 2008 at 10:09 AM

And when you go to the links cited in the article you read even more potential for error.
Such as the thermometers for measuring temperature are on heat producing buildings – not out in the wilderness away from man made heat- and some are surrounded by external heat pipes heating up the air; the ground is so cold in Siberia they put the heat pipes above ground. It is a fraud.

Dr. Hansen has an agenda (Al Gore’s agenda) and is manipulating government information. The man should be removed from his position.

The corruption of our institutions has been happening for decades: it was the goal of the former Soviet Empire. Whether or not their efforts from the 1950′s through the 1980′s were the direct cause of the current quagmire, they would be delighted with the effect.

The corrupt institutions will ultimately collapse. Maybe Hope O’Dopey will be our Mikhail Gorbachev and preside over the disintegration of much of the government.

I for one am a fan of Hubble’s discoveries and the cutting edge things its finding out and it may even make sense of dark energy and also the spinoffs its technology gives us.

As far as Gore goes, I think he has gotten his hands on some NASA data from one office most likely and thinks he has some decisive data on warming, but that data is old. We are finding out all of the planets have the same thing and it seems to be tied to solar activity affecting all planets. Now the OZONE thing was a big deal. Thats all over though. Reports are that the glaciers are growing again. The earth has many cycles we still dont fully understand and geologists are seeing the cycles in soil core samples. They also see asteroid impact information and dark times in the past.

I agree there are some bonehead scientists, but some aren’t. Maybe cut them in half and we’d be ok.

I ran a large organization at one time that was filled with a diverse group of scientists and engineers. If Hansen had worked for me his first error would have put him on my watch list. The second mistake would have resulted in his pink slip.

These kind of errors would put a private company out of business. Only in the government, on the taxpayer’s dime, would this kind of output be tolerated, or even rewarded.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on November 16, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Back on GW, it’s going to be a cold winter: there was an unusual lull in sunspot activity in the past few months, and there is a correlation between energy (heat) in the atmosphere (for which the bogus “global temperature” purports to be a proxy). So are we going to hear about increases in Arctic ice? Decreases in sea level?

The bright side is that, from my admittedly limited and anecdotal evidence, only the “true believers” harbor no skepticism of (A)GW. Most people who are capable of following a rational argument and who have given the debate more than just superficial attention know it’s complete hokum.

Ahhh… my favorite misunderstood climatologist. Hansen.

The guy who was being “silenced” by the Bush administration just because he kept presenting overblown data. Being “silenced” of course meaning appearances on every news show known to man, crying about how misunderstood he is.

Then there’s a Y2K glitch in the analysis method, so the 30′s are actually the hottest decade on record. Quick, change the analysis method so its a tie… -fixed.

I can’t count the number of times Hansen and the GISS have “changed methods” because the results weren’t what they wanted. That’s simple scientific fraud. The only reason he hasn’t been fired is because too many other people want to believe the fraud.

And when these things have been proven categorically false, there is no apology, no retraction, just on to the next boat load of bull sh!t. I have a friend with a ton of MRE’s because of Y2K. We see bubbles in the the financial sector time and time again but we fall for it every time. And maybe this is the first time it will be true but the current fiasco has the same odor. This was evident in the release that referred to the end of any cooling.

Clearly, this was with the clear purpose of countering a fragment of sanity that had entered the public discourse.

Whether the data was purposely rigged, or done so out of zealous incompetence is of little relevance – though purposeful may be lent some credence with the attempt to find a “hot spot” in the Arctic – note this from the UPI…

NASA must investigate this episode at GISS and insist on reliable production of accurate statistics.

That’s extremely wishful thinking on your part, Ed, I have to say. I don’t believe you were around here, and not sure if you covered last year’s story at your old blog, but the previous GISS fraud was even more egregious, particularly in how they dealt with it when it was exposed. Silently changing numbers on a data portion of their website, with no announcement to calm the previous alarmism.

The point of these things is to lie to the public, stoke fear, etc. And when the corrections come in, just silently delete old references to the lies, or at best, bury reporting on the correction as deeply as possible. That way, the majority are still left with the false impression, and funding dollars still flow and we all continue to feel the need for a “global solution”. You can see this in anything… Look at Haditha for instance. How much did we hear about the “massacre”? Now how much have we heard about the acquittals?

At any rate, I give us a few years before the scientists proclaim “oh, we were wrong all along BUT NOW WE’RE RIGHT, it’s global cooling that we need to fear”. They did it 30 years ago, and by all honest accounts a decades long cooling trend has arrived… Wait and watch as the ignorant public follows these liars as they successfully pull off this 180.

And anyone who looks at the Vostok Ice Core data can easily see that we are headed into a HUGE, HUGE, GIGANTIC cooling period (if one believes the periodicity that is easily seen in that core data). But to the left, black is white and cold is hot …

If we are accepting Russian weather data without any quality control, this is a huge problem. The Russians, most definitely, have a vested interest in the Global Warming sham. It is they who stand to gain more than anybody else, because they are sitting on a huge pile of carbon credits that they can sell on the open market, because their CO2 production is so much lower than pre-Soviet collapse figures.

gridlock2 on November 16, 2008 at 12:33 PM

MB4 on November 16, 2008 at 12:55 PM

The choice, as always, is incompetant or corrupt.

Serial incompetancy leads to irrelevance, at least outside of politics and especially in serious science.

What conclusion can be drawn when a group of professionals whose focus is, by its nature, on empirical data when it chooses to rely upon data whose source has proven again and again to be mistaken or biased? The conclusion is, of course, that the group of professionals no longer honors its scientific integrity and has found a new loyalty, whether it be money or ideology or simply personal advancement. The biggest problem with corruption is that the more extensive it becomes, the easier it is to become corrupt, and the harder it is to take a stand against it.

What will it take for climate scientists to regain their integrity? They simply have to decide to do it, and do it. Regaining their credibility will be a longer road, but not so long that it shouldn’t be done. The alternative is sequestration and extinction, as even the most corrupt regime will never trust those that lie for them. It’s funny how the short and easy route always, always leads to Hell.

What will it take for climate scientists to regain their integrity?

A whole new set of climate scientists … ones who are actually scientists.

It’s funny how the short and easy route always, always leads to Hell.

That’s the global warming they’re really talking about :-)

If you think the current economic crisis is bad now, wait ’till our Dark Lord and Savior, Darth Barack gets done implementing CO2 limits and carbon taxes on industry. Our utility rates will increase anywhere from 40 to 100%, industry will shutdown, and we’ll all be left with only imported goods we can no longer afford.

Our dim-witted govenor here in The People’s Republik of Oregon, emboldened by the election of Darth Barack, is implementing a CO2 cap and trade program. He wants to cap CO2 emissions to 07 levels then reduce by 20% with an overall 80% reduction by 2012. Power plants will be given an “at current level” cap free of charge. All other industries will have to purchase their carbon emissions from the remainder left in the pool at a state auction. A minimum of $30 per ton CO2 tax will be charged for those operating without credits. You can see where this is going… Viva Revolucion!

But your not basing your belief in global warming on that are you? It is 54 degrees in northern Florida right now, with a projected high of 60.

No, I have no belief in it at all.

I think NYC is as polluted as it’s always been. I worry about my lungs, the reason I paid out of pocket for a CT lung scan a few years back when I was diagnosed with lymphoma.

Thank God, my lungs are fine. It’s not uncommon here to see people diagnosed with lung cancer who never smoked a day in their life.

“If we are accepting Russian weather data without any quality control, this is a huge problem.”

[gridlock2 on November 16, 2008 at 12:33 PM]

While I agree with your general point, it ought to be clear this 1) that this is not Russian weather data of the old Soviet variety — this kind of data disinformation just can’t be done in the age of information — and 2) it remains to be seen that this is the data that was “given” to GISS.

The folks at the blogs linked in the story quickly accessed October weather data for Russian cities from the internet and just as quickly and accurately surmised that the data GISS used was wrong. There has been no evidence to given to show that this data is what the Russians gave GISS.

I give the Russians more credit for competence, duplicity and competent duplicity, than to GISS for theirs. Since it was easily debunked, I chalk this up to six letter problem at GISS: H-A-N-S-E-N.

Dusty on November 16, 2008 at 1:43 PM

The global warming theory (and yes, that’s all it is, an unproven theory) is based on computer models and scientific consensus. Computer models that predict the weather dozens of years in the future. They can’t even correctly predict the weather two weeks from now, but we’re supposed to accept that they can accurately predict weather many years from now. Makes no sense. And scientific consensus? There was once scientific consensus that the earth was flat and that the sun orbited around the earth. Scientific consensus is not scientific; it’s just a bad case of groupthink, and we know how dangerous that can be.

But the people who’ve invested money in things like wind farms and solar panels and carbon credits know they can make a lot of money off this scam, and they’re not about to clue in the public. And unfortunately, most of the public is as illiterate in science as they are in economics, and they just believe whatever the so-called “experts” tell them, through the complicit MSM.

AZCoyote on November 16, 2008 at 2:11 PM

Yep, and Gov. Ahnold was on This Week Sunday morning claiming that Global Warming was the cause of an extended fire season that California is experiencing. It amazes me that this bs continues. I guess if he tells people that southern California is basically a desert, and prone to fire, he’ll loose the tax base from the over building that’s taken place for the last 30+ years in that region.

mossberg500 on November 16, 2008 at 2:17 PM

no one was allowed to see the raw data or algorithms used to massage it.

A point I skipped on my previous mini-rant. A condition of publication for most peer-reviewed journals is that data and methods be provided if requested. Hansen and his crew have been unique in getting away with not providing that information. If the journals followed their own rules (rules anyone else would have to follow) those articles would be retracted. Science does not flourish in darkness, politicians do.

Thanks, I’m fine, in remission. The vehicles, the buses used to be a big problem but they are better, we have the electric ones.

What people need to understand is that there is no proof of “Man-Made” Global Warming without using irrelevant computer models. Yes computer models have a place in engineering but are utterly useless at fortune telling which is what Hanson is doing at NASA.
Garbage In – Garbage Out. GIGO

Climate Prediction cannot be done using the current modeling methods without huge inaccuracies in the results. With engineering you can build and test in the real world to confirm the computer model’s accuracy.

You can do no such thing with the planet Earth and it’s climate.
You cannot build a planet and it’s atmosphere to “test” your computer climate model.

I used to be in the business of building computer simulators and anyone can program a computer model to do whatever you want. If you program a computer model so that X amount of CO2 increase “forces” X amount of temperature increase then it will happen, this does not make this true in the real world.

If you’re not familiar with the blogs mentioned in the post, here they are:

Watts Up With That? by Anthony Watts and Climate Audit by Steve McIntyre. They stay on top of this.

They continue to work on developments in the story. Here is the latest post: GISS, NOAA, GHCN and the odd Russian temperature anomaly – “It’s all pipes!”.

In investigating the Russian temperature anomaly, he has a lengthy post up looking at how and where temperature measurements are made.

He provides maps, research and pictures of an old Soviet system of district heating in which pipes are run all over an area (over the ground and outside buildings) to provide heat, with some being uninsulated and leaking heat to the outside environment. The conclusion:

If Russian weather stations are located in cities that have this district heating plan, and a good percentage of the pipes are uninsulated, how much of the waste heat from the pipes ends up creating a local micro-climate of warmth?

Remember when I said that the NOAA map anomalies centered over Russia seemed to be prevalent in winter but not summer? It stands to reason that as winter temperature gets colder, more waste heat is dumped out of these inefficient systems to meet the demand. Basically, we have an active UHI situation in the city that increases in output as temperatures drop.

In the areal photos above of Verhojansk, it appears that some pipes are insulated (white, what appears to be main lines) while others are rust brown, and appear near buildings and dwellings.

I got to thinking about why these pipes might be uninsulated. First there is the classic inefficiency and carelessness of Soviet workmanship, but another thought occurred to me: Russian people might like it that way. Why? Well imagine a place where you walk to the market every day, even in subzero temperatures. Since many of these pipes seem to follow streets and sidewalks, wouldn’t it be a more pleasant walk in winter next to a nice toasty steam pipe?

He also quotes some work Steve McIntyre has done in which McIntyre wrote:

Now there are many puzzles in GHCN adjustments, to say the least, and these adjustments are inhaled into GISS. Verhojansk is in the heart of the Siberian “hot spot”, presently a balmy minus 22 deg C.

Watts goes on to state:

Maybe it’s the steam pipes. We need to send somebody to Russia to find out. Of the many station lat/lons I looked at, Verhojansk was the only one I found with enough Google Earth resolution to see the steam pipes. Maybe the heart of our Russian temperature anomaly lies in central heating.

Global warming will destroy the world if the global warming alarmists don’t get there first.

The real aberration is the independent science that The West somewhat fostered for a few centuries. The world is actually reverting back to the normal state of science which has existed at least since ancient Sumeria. Of necessity the priests and the kings have to agree on things as important as origins and threats.
