Lobbyists in key positions in Team Obama transition team

To put the old song on its ear, everything new is old again.  Remember when Barack Obama said this?

To rousing applause, Barack Obama formally announced this afternoon that the Democratic National Committee will follow his lead and begin refusing donations from registered lobbyists and special-interest political action committees.

“They do not fund my campaign,” the presumptive Democratic nominee told a small-town southwest Virginia crowd, after delivering a standard refrain that blames drug and insurance interests for blocking universal health care. “They will not fund our party. And they will not drown out the voices of the American people when I’m President of the United States.”

They may not have funded his campaign, although that’s highly questionable, but the Washington Post reports that they’ll be running his government.  Obama has tapped a number of lobbyists for high-profile positions in the transition team, and most of them will likely end up with significant leadership roles in the coming Obama administration:

Barack Obama campaigned on a pledge to change Washington, vowing to upend the K Street lobbying culture he encountered when he joined the U.S. Senate.

But more than a dozen members of President-elect Obama’s fast-growing transition team have worked as federally registered lobbyists within the past four years. They include former lobbyists for the nation’s trial lawyers association, mortgage giant Fannie Mae, drug companies such as Amgen, high-tech firms such as Microsoft, labor unions and the liberal advocacy group Center for American Progress.

Mark Gitenstein, one of the 12 transition board members who will play a significant role in shaping the Obama administration, worked on million-dollar lobbying contracts with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and promoted legislation for giant defense contractors Boeing and General Dynamics. Until this fall, he was registered to petition Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission on behalf of AT&T, Merrill Lynch, KPMG, Ernst & Young and others.

Gitenstein has blue-chip credentials for the volunteer role on the Obama team. He was chief Democratic counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee during confirmation hearings for controversial Supreme Court nominee Robert H. Bork; was a close adviser to Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s White House bid; and served as counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Hey, nothing says post-partisan culture change than hiring the lobbyist that engineered the shameful attacks on Robert Bork!  Gitenstein isn’t alone, either.  Matthew Mosk notes the other significant lobbyists now rising to power under President Hope N. Change:

  • Ron Klain – Joe Biden’s chief of staff, had lobbied for Fannie Mae on “regulatory matters” until 2004, when the fraud got uncovered after years of Congressional interference with regulators.  Klain also lobbied for companies defending asbestos lawsuits and for ImClone, the drugmaker that faced charges of fraud.
  • John Podesta – The man running Obama’s transition spent the last few years lobbying for the far-Left group Center for American Progress.
  • Patrick Gaspard – Lobbied on health care issues on behalf of the SEIU, now associate personnel director for the transition team

Podesta has an even more interesting tie to lobbying.  Bill Clinton enacted a five-year ban on former White House staffers lobbying present and future administrations in order to curtail influence peddling.  However, after George Bush won in 2000, Clinton rescinded the order to help his staffers get jobs in the wake of the Republican sweep to victory.  The man who helped write the revocation?  John Podesta.

There is nothing inherently wrong with lobbying.  There is plenty wrong with hypocrisy, especially on the grand scale committed by Barack Obama during this campaign.  He regularly indulged in the populist demonization of lobbyists and claimed to lead a new movement to purify Washington of their eeeeevil influences.  Now that he has the power, Obama has no problem working with lobbyists for fraudulently run mortgage giants and drug makers, smear artists, and asbestos-lawsuit defenders.

That’s change that 63 million suckers believed in.

Alas, we’ll learn the hard way.

Hipocrisy comes and goes. It seems to inherently be the common realm of politicians in general, and Democrats in particular, but Barack Obama may just be the most blatant hypocrite ever elected to office.

You have to feel bad for some of the people who will work for Obama for any length during his administration. When they leave his employ they aren’t going to be able to write tell-all books. Nobody is going to want to read more than one book that just repeats, “Wow, Obama is so great. And he is so cool. I loved working for Change and giving people Hope.”

It reminds me of that saying: “If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a noise?”

So to borrow that phrase and update it with this Obama untruth and any future Obama untruths:
“If Obama tells a lie and 63 million voters don’t want to hear it, did Obama lie?”

I am so sick of conservatives saying “although I don’t agree with his policies, you must admit that this is a historic moment in time to have the first black President blah, blah blah . . . .” I think that this is one of the most shameful periods in our history. The MSM is being run by a bunch of dictators who decide what information the American people should be told and not told. My mother, who is a huge Obama supporter, knew nothing about Bill Ayers, Acorn or Khalidi two days before election day and she watches a lot of tv, including the news. I’m Asian American and if Obama were Asian, I would be horrified and ashamed; not proud. Obama successfully pulled the wool over the eyes of 60 million plus voters and, hopefully, in the end they will realize what a big mistake they made.

Obama plans on spending billions/trillions of dollars. In addition he plans on a massive increase of government regulations. Like flies to honey the lobbyists will over flow DC. If there is any one topic that will illustrate the contradictions of Obama the campaigner verse Obama the president, it will be the massive growth in size and influence of lobbyists and interest groups. Sadly they will do a great deal of damage to this country, but it will give us something of an opening in 2010 and 2012.

rob verdi on November 15, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Not to worry. Obama already announced that when he said ‘no lobbyists would work in my white house’ he meant ‘no lobbyists would work in my white house without a one year cooling-off period’. They cooled off already.

As was discussed on O’Blatherly, with the soon to come new face on Fox, Glenn the Beck, most people wanted to disregard Bill the Terrorist Ayers. Glenn said it seems the electorate are short on the pay attention and absorb side of things when it comes to morals or recognizing an unrepentent terrorist. Lucky us! Rush says we pay a tremendous price for ignorance and uneducated peoples in our nation. I bow the the correctness of El Rushbo! Wish this was one of the 2% of the time he can be wrong!

If THE ONE goes to the Left too fast it will not matter whether or not the MSM reports the truth. The 63 million morons will notice they have less money in their paychecks, or no job at all and with little prospects for a new one. The price of cigarettes, beer, food, milk, eggs, bread, cable, video games, DVDs, CDs, and gasoline is going to make these bozos very irritated. Snoop Dog and P Diddy are going to turn into Oopy Dog and Iddy when this happens because their sales are going to plummet!

I am thinking THE MESSIAH will go far Left because 1) He is far Left, 2) His voting record is far Left, 3) He is hiring far Leftist to be in his Cabinet and staff and 4) He is beholden to the far Left that placed him as POTUS “ruler”. He has two years to implement this Leftist/Marxist plan because we are going to work like mad to take back Congress in 2010. With the current Congress he can pretty much get whatever he wants; so it is now or never.

By the way, I was in Hawaii recently and a teacher at his elite prep school said that The One was just a B student in History and generally resented the prep school he attended. Most of that school doesn’t seem too fond of him.

A source also indicated that he seemed to resent Granny and that could have been projected to all of successful white America. I wonder how many pseudo-psychological studies of this theory would have been done if he were on the right? I could just read the op eds in the NYT now…

Politico has a big story up on this today too. One of the guys on the Justice Department review team was involved in selling pardons under Bill Clinton.

John Podesta’s brother, Tony, runs one of the biggest lobbying shops in D.C. You can’t tell me none of their lobbyists will end up in top Administration jobs.

Well, Dan Lungren won’t if he gets to be House Minority Leader. In between his stints in Congress and as California AG, Lungren was a lobbyist at Venable. So he won’t be able to throw any stones from his glass house.

The lobbying culture in Washington has attained Brobdignagian proportions. I am not sure an Administration of either party could staff up completely without hiring a few current or former lobbyists. You can’t swing a dead cat in Washington without hitting one.

From Politico:

One of the leading members of President-elect Barack Obama’s Health and Human Services transition team was an anti-tobacco lobbyist as recently as September, a position that would appear to break a transition team rule that prevents lobbyists from serving in policy areas they have worked to influence within the past year.

But in an example of how the tough-sounding rules can provide Obama plenty of wiggle room, the campaign explained how the lobbyist’s work didn’t violate the restrictions.

Bill Corr, executive director of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, unsuccessfully pushed Congress to give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate tobacco. But because the legislation granting that authority failed, there is no dovetail between Corr’s lobbying and HHS policies, said a transition spokeswoman, who did not wish to be identified.

Grafted on November 15, 2008 at 4:57 PM

Well I’ll come out and speak on the issue as I have been labelled a “troll” in the past.

Obama’s rules about lobbying are much clearer than this post gives them credit for. His rule is not that NO lobbyists can work for the Administration. His rule is that you can’t work on the issues that you lobbied for in the Administration. So if you were a lobbyist for healthcare for labor, you won’t be working on labor policy in the white house. Which is a huge change from the Bush years where lobbysts for specific industries began setting policy on those issues.

DeathToMediaHacks on November 15, 2008 at 5:18 PM

Obama plans on spending billions/trillions of dollars. In addition he plans on a massive increase of government regulations. Like flies to honey the lobbyists will over flow DC.

The way to reduce the influence of lobbyists in Washington is relatively simple. If the federal government is put on a budget, and over time the expenditures get lower and lower, the number of lobbyists will get lower and lower, too.

I’d like to see a President who came in and immediately cut spending by 10 % in very agency, encouraging agancy and department heads to find waste and duplication and eliminate them but still hold them to high expectations of what their agency/department would acheive. if they sqauwed too much, the Prez could ask for their resignation and offer the position to someone who COULD do more with less.

I recognize that and I’m not happy about it. But I was never one of those over the moon Obama supporters, he’s not a messiah, he’s a politician. But I strongly support him because he and my worldview line up on nearly every issue. And I need to review the policies concerning timetables for lobbyists working in areas that they lobbied for (or against). I’ve definitely seen him hiring quite a bit more individuals who are purely academics about issues than Bush did, who only seemed to hire corporate lobbysts. In Washington you simply can not run an Administration without lobbyists, there just aren’t that many people in the city with the deep level of expertise on the wide range of issues you need to have experts on as President of the United States. I will be satisfied if there is a balance, if there’s an effort to limit lobbyists from double dipping (which there is) and if the policy changes that are made reflect a less corporate first view.

What’s so silly about the right is that they claim that Obama campaigned on loftier goals than other politicians and therefore he must be purer because his rhetoric was purer. But was it? Check out Bush in 2000, check out Dukakis in 1988, check out Reagan in both elections they ALL ran on lofty rhetoric. Politicians do that. What I think the right is upset with isn’t the rhetoric, it was the effective and compelling way he SOLD that rhetoric (just like Ronald Reagan). But when Reagan got in office what did he do? He sat down with Tip O’Neal and they put together a series of compromise legislation with the Democrats.

On the upside this means that Hope and Change really and truly is BS.

Obama will not be keeping most of his promises – that might upset his followers but I can’t help seeing this as a good thing, even if his monumental cynicism leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Better that he turns out to be a cynical empty suit than an naieve yet driven socialist.

While we’re talking about Clinton take a look at the SNL behind the scenes photos up right now in the headline section. Look at the photos when Bill is shaking hands with Palin. Is it just me or is that the look of love in his eyes? I think Bill is fantasizing about the most forbidden love of all, a little Republican on Democrat action.

“Suckers” just somehow . . . doesn’t quite capture the fullness of it; I don’t think Ed would let me get away with posting what would.

Hey, maybe those badass Blackwater chaps will get pizzed about getting the shaft from BO after the magnificent job they have been doing in Iraq and Afghanistan and take matters into their own hands. I’m down with a good coup d’tat over here, can’t be any worse than it’s going to get with Mr. Asshat in chief for the next 4 years.

Which makes your judgment suspect, to say the least.
