He’s getting the hang of it. I woke up the other night at 3:00 AM in the morning and found him on the computer looking up information on arthritis. I’m really impressed that he’s still eager to learn something so new even at his age. My mother is impressed also. I have some good genes. And sheebe, thank you for your comment about your father. I’ve treasured every moment with my parents at their age. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Big John, my father is the same way. He reads instruction booklets all the way through! Your father doesn’t sound like he needs them, but for anyone else with senior parents, books by Visual Steps (www.visualsteps.com) for Seniors are VERY GOOD. They have large print and large printscreens as they step the user through tasks, step by step. My father’s copy of “Internet and E-mail for SENIORS with Windows Vista” is in front of me now. It looks like it’s getting pretty good use.

I leave in December but am leaving my desktop here. Dad will get some good use out of it.

Software is real interesting. At times that can be a real challenge. That can take a lot of time. Olga is the old lady’s name. I give Seniors a discount. I charge 130.00 an hour. But only charged her 65.00. She was wealthy but I felt like I was taking advantage of her. Money goes quick these days. My friend who is her Great Niece, told me that she lost a lot of money in stocks. So, her Great niece knows to call me. If her computer is messed up. She gave me her compaq. I sold it to this young kid. Upgraded the memory. It rocks, nothing was wrong with it. I love older people, but my nerves get the best of me. Sounds like you are a nerd like myself. Saw your above post. Age is what makes wine. The older, the better! I am up there and I love it.

Sounds like an awful situation, all right. Maybe you should fire her? It’s just that you sound so strung out and unhappy about it.

I can definitely recall clients I couldn’t make it with, even priding myself as I do on my teaching knack. Hard to maintain good boundaries when it means admitting I can’t do something, but it always seemed kindest to all concerned to bag it.

It really does sound like you don’t have time for students with all you do. I was lucky enough to make a good buck teaching desktop software up through MSProject, which kept me busy without having to do tech stuff simultaneously.

You’re right, you shouldn’t be her nurse. Just say no?

Try teaching an old lady with Alzheimer. I go to her home, and it is hot as a oven. She is only client that no one, including you couldn’t get through to her. She forgets she is sitting at the computer. Is sad, but am not a nurse. I have a lot of clients, they don’t go anywhere else. Standup Computer Training? Where are you from? Been at this for years. Could brag about my qualities. But, technology changes daily. You couldn’t even claim that. Is why Computer Techs are mostly morons that think they are. One has to research every day to keep up. Don’t have time for students. She was the only one that I felt sorry for. She is old and ill. I worked for Jorgens in Montecito, took care of all systems. My clients are hand picked. Most are upscale people that don’t like to be in public. I build custom systems,servers and I also do software.

Speaking as one who has done years of support, as well as standup computer training, I’d say that if you can’t communicate with a student or client the first thing to change is your approach.

Try to remember they’re not being paid to understand you. It’s your job to understand them.
