Video: Middle-class state of mind?

The latest ad for the run-off election in Georgia uses Democrat Jim Martin’s own words against him. Martin claims that middle class is a state of mind, not an economic status, which may surprise … well, just about everyone:

What does Martin mean by that?  Is poor a state of mind as well?  Rich?  It’s incoherent even as philosophy, but as policy, it’s really, really dumb.  If all we need for a middle class is a state of mind, then we can tax the real middle class into poverty without any problem at all.  Which, according to the NRSC, Jim Martin has already tried to do on a number of occasions.

Hopefully, this ad gets plenty of play on Georgia television.

Update: Apparently, it’s not going to be an ad.  Pity.  Also, I got the front page image from a friend at the NRSC, but it’s originally from Georgia Premium, a conservative Peach State blog.

I get it….Lord Obamamessiah will convince us all we are middle class…It’s just a state of mind you know.

ihasurnominashun on November 14, 2008 at 7:54 PM

People around here are shouting from horseback: “The obamabots are coming, the Obamabots are coming!” We are ready for them…heh, heh, heh.

beththebaker on November 14, 2008 at 7:55 PM

Never seen a pic of Martin before. He looks like he’d get whupped in a fistfight with Mr. Rogers. Sure hope Sax doesn’t lose to this guy.

Early voting for Georgia starts on Monday…I’ll be the first one in line!

virtue gal on November 14, 2008 at 7:58 PM

That’s not the middle class that I once knew.

My collie says:

These are not the members of the tax base that you are looking for.

CyberCipher on November 14, 2008 at 8:02 PM

A frame of mind? Ok, I get it — I only have to worry if I’m rich like Joe the Plumber.

Speaking of using Liberals own words,a website
would be advantageous in catalogueing all of
Hopey/GaffeBidens words to use against them
in the upcoming Obama Administration!!

canopfor on November 14, 2008 at 8:04 PM

What a blithering moron! Of course “middle class” is a state-of-mind if you’re talking about how people view themselves! The problem with this sort of thinking is that it can plainly be used to pass judgement calls on others.

I have absolutely no desire to appoint anyone in my state capital, let alone D.C., the arbiter of how much is “enough” or “too much.” Keep your hands off my pocketbook, Obama.

gryphon202 on November 14, 2008 at 8:06 PM

I don’t know… I would say that “rich” and “poor” are definitely at least reflective of a state of mind. There is certainly a “poor mindset” and a “rich mindset”. Why not middle class?

DaveS on November 14, 2008 at 8:08 PM

My state of mind tells me Georgia better vote for Chambliss or they will be in a welfare state of mind.

HornetSting on November 14, 2008 at 8:09 PM

So how is this different from the right’s “elitism is a state of mind” argument (used recently by you-know-who)? Is that “incoherent” as philosophy, “dumb” as policy too?

Grow Fins on November 14, 2008 at 8:11 PM

How are the polls looking for this race?

Which means, that if your ‘Middle class’,and you
make say over $30,000 grand, your probably in
the range of the ‘Filthy Dirty Rotten Rich,in
Liberal terms!!

I am curious about this middle class-Here is some information on America’s “poor starving masses”

The following are facts about persons defined as “poor” by the Census Bureau, taken from various government reports:

Forty-six percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.

Seventy-six percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)

Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars.
Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher.

As a group, America’s poor are far from being chronically undernourished. The average consumption of protein, vitamins, and minerals is virtually the same for poor and middle-class children and, in most cases, is well above recommended norms. Poor children actually consume more meat than do higher-income children and have average protein intakes 100 percent above recommended levels. Most poor children today are, in fact, supernourished and grow up to be, on average, one inch taller and 10 pounds heavier that the GIs who stormed the beaches of Normandy in World War II.

So America’s “poor” are much better off than the “middle class”? Is being “middle classed” really just a state of mind?

Jim Martin’s definition of Middle Class: One who aspires to someday live in a double-wide.

innominatus on November 14, 2008 at 8:18 PM

Martin is a bafoon. Saxby is an arrogant jerk.

What do I do? I’ve promised myself NEVER to vote for Saxby… Do I go back on my promise to myself, or do I sit back with a bag of popcorn. Truly an agonizing decision for me.

Maybe one my kids can fill out the absentee voter info, then ‘technically’ I didn’t vote for Saxby.

Why couldn’t a real conservative kicked Saxby to the curb during the primaries!!? Now we get to put up with this junk for a few more weeks – lucky us!

gatorboy on November 14, 2008 at 8:21 PM

It is a state of mind for liberals.

Look at the cities they run from top to bottom.
Chicago,New York,Washington DC,LA,Detroit,Cleveland,San Francisco.

They either have no middle class left there or they are trying to get out.

It is the elitist rich and then the welfare class to cook, clean, and wash their cars.

With the amount of people coming to North Carolina from NY,you would think it had turned into Cuba up there.

High crime, terrible schools, high taxes have made it impossible for these people to live there, even when a lot of them are working two jobs.

The only way you can find middle class in these places very
soon will be from memory only.

The main thing I tell them is not to vote in the same type of liberal idiots here that screwed up the state you are running from.

North Carolina went blue so I guess they just don’t get it.

canditaylor68 on November 14, 2008 at 8:16 PM

I have a question. Why does every one of “America’s Poor” have a damn cell phone?
According to the liberal, Obamaites, my husband and I are filthy, stinking, you don’t deserve your money regardless of how hard you work, rich and I don’t have a cell phone…….
My state of mind wants to be “poor” so I can text away all day while playing my PSP.

Hey, don’t knock it. Grew up in one in a little Texas town. Still go home to this day and feel like the princess of my parent’s double-wide.

HornetSting on November 14, 2008 at 8:32 PM

Am I the only one who thinks this ad campaign is so bad it might single-handedly lose Saxby the election?

Methinks our side over-uses the “gotcha!” technique a little.

How about, Martin’s economic policies suck, his values are way out of the Georgia mainstream, and if he wins, Democrats will have unlimited power to do what they want?

If I were NRSC director, that’d be the only message I would run for the whole campaign. Period.

Don’t forget, the poor also have: A Big Plasma Screen TV, at least 4 maxed out credit cards, lots of bling bling, a mortgage they cannot afford [that The One [we] will pay for, wink wink] and a obesity problem.

Don’t forget, the poor also have: A Big Plasma Screen TV, at least 4 maxed out credit cards, lots of bling bling, a mortgage they cannot afford [that The One [we] will pay for, wink wink] and a obesity problem.

Well, that settles it then. I don’t have any of those. No cell phone, only one (ancient, 20″) TV, no cable/satellite, one (paid off) cc, a modest mortgage (taxes now a larger percent of the payment than the mortgage itself), and the only “bling” I’m wearing is a single gold wedding band. Guess that makes us rich, huh? In which case, we can expect our taxes to rise to “spread our wealth” around to all those poor folks, auto companies, and banks.

CJ on November 15, 2008 at 8:06 AM

The wife and me will be sitting this one out. Can’t vote Chambliss, won’t vote for Martin.
And if Chambliss wins it will be time for conservatives to sit down and shut up. Saxby is a Republican but he isn’t a conservative, so all of this heated rhetoric and talk about getting rid of RINO’s is just that. He has a lot of the Republican establishment coming to GA on his behalf, all saying the same thing. Don’t let the Dems take control but not giving you a reason to vote for Chambliss.
Freedom’s Watch was the first to start airing commercials on his behalf and now with McCain in town and Huckabee due in this weekend I guess RINO is the future of the Republican party.
I urge conservatives to sit this run off election out. At least 6 months from now when Saxby is once again holding a press conference with his latest Gang of Whatever from the Dems like he has done in the past you can fairly criticize him.

I live in Georgia and we just got our absentee request forms. What the heck is Sonny Perdue thinking??? The dems are the only ones he is helping on this one!! All the old folks and Obama voters would be the only dems here now and they are the ones who can’t or won’t go to the polls!

Typical of all Republicans. They don’t understand the rules of the game. They bring slingshot to gun fights while the Dems bring AK-47s.

angryed on November 15, 2008 at 10:02 AM

Sadly, I’ve got to agree with the Democrat :(. ‘Middle Class’ IS a state of mind. I was told (and believed) we were middle class when my pop earned $486 a month, back during the Nixon years. I was told (and believed) we were middle class even when his paycheck went up to around $5,000 a month under Reagan. Clearly, those numbers aren’t the same, but our position in life hadn’t changed, although we had cooler stuff. We still considered ourselves middle class.

Dang, I hate to agree with a Democrat.

Kevin M on November 15, 2008 at 10:23 AM

Exactly. Sometimes I just can’t find the outrage to get mad at a person saying something that is
a) arguably true, and
b) probably irrelevant.

Why not just say, Martin wants to raise taxes on everyone because he’s a Democrat?

Oh wait, because Republicans aren’t taken seriously on the economy because we wrecked our brand.

By your handle I’m going to assume you’re military or were previously. If I’m correct, please consider our rifle range metaphor while you’re considering your options down there.

The obviously irreversible damage to the country that could be done by a filibuster proof liberal Senate is the 50 meter target. Electing real Conservative candidates is important, but that target doesn’t pop up until you get out to about 250 meters.

You help no one but the Democrats. Just saying.
