Video: Blogger stocking up on ammunition, canned goods for recession

posted at 9:21 pm on November 14, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

Two predictions, the first (amazingly) from former Ron Paul advisor Peter Schiff circa 2006-07, the second from Trends Research CEO Gerald Celente circa last week.

I plan on using my platform at HA in the coming months to organize the Order of the Hand, with me in the Will Ferrell role. Those who fear an apocalyptic Celente-esque recession are welcome to join me in the mountains. We shall subsist on corned beef and Jack, and worship as our goddess Rebecca Gomez.

Peter Schiff was right. Then again, there was more than one American talking about how ridiculously high housing prices were and how they’d end up falling. There was also more than one American who felt that we were on the verge of a financial downturn.

amerpundit on November 14, 2008 at 9:35 PM

Get out of your apartment, AP. Once law and order breaks down, cities will stop functioning the same day. Water and sewer service will stop when the electricity stops. The cities will become a killing zones, as hundreds of thousands of people start dying off. It will be like one of those zombie movies where you will have to fight off the hungry mobs of blood thirsty fellow New Yorkers.

I live in UT and I’ve come to learn that, apart from being wonderful neighbors, the Mormons are also very smart. Every Mormon household has a 1+ year of:

1. Food
2. Water
3. Weapons
4. Ammo

I used to make fun of it. Now, it makes me look like the fool.

First of all, I believe more people took issue with Obama telling a crowd of wealthy San Francisco donors that small-towners cling to religion and become bitter than the gun angle. Second of all, you’ll find that many people here didn’t start buying guns because of the downturn.

At least get it right.

“You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them,” Obama said. “And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

He said they are bitter (as a consequence of expectations) and turn into bigot who don’t like people like them. The great unifier at work.

“Felix the Cat, the wonderful wonderful cat.
Whenever he gets in a fix, he reaches into his bag of tricks.
Felix the Cat, the wonderful wonderful cat.
You’ll laugh so much your sides will ache
Your heart will go pitter pat
Watching Felix, the wonderful cat.”

Great Felix quotes: “Oh no, it’s the Professor (Ayers).”

That vidoe makes him look like a genius.

It also shows the folly of business channels. You have Schiff debating with Ben Stein, a wrestler looking guy, and someone babe with more make up than a porn star on and they are laughing at him. I think Wayne Rogers is a regular on that show too.

Paulson is an imbecile dumb ass. All these Wall Street types who ran their businesses into the ground are now the ones suddenly clamoring for subsidies left and right. Its better to let the market sort out the winners and losers, because otherwise it just starts an ugly precedent. Once one company gets bailed out, suddenly all American businesses are doing bad, and “oh, they need help, we have to help them or the economy will crash” nonsense starts, then we get to pay the bill.

Jeeeeeessssssss……… a Democrat Govt. program that caused this all, actual legislation to FORCE banks to give loans to a certain demographic that couldn’t pay it back under PENALTY, then have Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac buy it all up, Millions to the Democratic Cronies to run it, sell it off to the World Economy backed by the United States Government…….. then blame the whole thing on President Bush, when the system crashes because we have started to loan money to the “third world” in exchange for votes to get Mr. Obama elected to prime the pump to keep it going filling the Bureaucracies with cronies and far left goons to explode the problem………………..?

Yeah, typical Democrat solution, print more money and throw it at the problem…………..

Let’s just make fun of the people that say,

“Hey people, sooner or later, we are going to have to pay this stuff back…”,

and the longer this goes on without addressing the cause and holding the people and the political party {Democrat} party accountable, the worse it will be…………..

P.S…………… don’t forget to stalk up on the pop corn.

I figure if you stock enough food for 1 year, that’s good. But you also have to stock enough water for one year, that’s not so easy, even without washing, you consume about 1 gal of water per day, so you would need about 365 Gals for one person. Your house will have to be filled with water. But what about medication? Prescription medication can not be stocked as doctors only give you about 3-6 months supply. As far as heating fuel, you will have none if your place is heated by natural gas, or electricity. You could never stock enough propane to heat your house.

The only people that will make it okay will be those in rural areas with well water, septic tanks, and treed property for a wood burning stove. Everybody else is dependent on the city to provide for them.

I tried unsuccessfully to get my mother to move into the country for this purpose. But at 70, she has no concept of what could happen, and no fear that it might, and no will to do anything about it even if it did. I’m afraid most people are like her.

I read where they are letting homeowners up in wWhitefish keep up to 6 laying hens…here’s the thing, you are going to want some yardbirds, if you plan on living off the land. Now who do you think is zoning their neighbors, telling them how many chickens they can keep?

If you can hunt, you have to get a tag, and if you want a big fat Cow as in Elk, you gotta get in on a Lottery.

This is outrageous they want to charge people $990. To keep 2 chickens in their yard. Considering this is how rural folks get along in hard times, these beauracrats need to reconsider. Or else they may have a run in with those bitter clingers GRIN. Montana has the right to carry in the open. It’s a Mountain thing, you should be packin.

the first (amazingly) from former Ron Paul advisor Peter Schiff circa 2006-07

Unfortunately, Ron Paul is a crank. Also unfortunate is that so many people are ignorant of basic economics, even Ben Stein it appears. There were many warning that American consumers have been borrowing more than they can pay back that the result will be a severe economic downturn and possible depression.

I am just happy it is going to be on Obama’s watch.

OTOH, this is going to be the buying opportunity of our life time. That is if you still have a job in 2010.

If you look at the amount of debt we hold (both public and private), plus our ever-expanding entitlements, plus our under-funded pensions, you can reach only one conclusion: we are in a bad way.

Whether the pundits talk about it or not, people sense the trouble we’re in. That’s why Obama won. The voters know we’re near the cliff, and they hope magic can save us.

The bailouts have increased my concerns. When is it wise fiscal policy to increase a debt burden while under duress? The government is the sector where jobs never decrease – spending is going to increase.

Increased spending means more pressure on the individual taxpayer especially when the business environment is shaky and the tax situation in the US doesn’t encourage new investment. More pressure on the individual tax payer (and small business) means trouble for everyone. I don’t see an ‘out’ without a reframing of individual spending habits. And to me that seems especially likely as financials that stimulate consumer credit spending are in increased trouble.

Spirit of 1776 on November 14, 2008 at 10:12 PM

Man, oh man am I pissed at y’all!
I’m a newby here, and oh so grateful that they opened the window on registration right before the election, but my goodness, do I want to slap y’all! You’re saying we’ve lost the black vote, we’ve lost the Hispanic vote, we’ve lost the female vote, we’ve lost the fill-in-the-blank vote. Nope! Sorry, if those votes are lost, it’s because we gave them away, not because they were taken. Our problem has been that we have been unable to communicate the principle that it is up to the individual. Yes, there is help in this awesome Republic for those that can’t help themselves, and that’s as it should be, but we have a responsibility to get people to the point where they CAN help themselves…the old teach a man to fish vs. give ‘em a fish philosophy. Holly cow, how about saying something like, um, “Yes we can, Yes we can”…wonder why that resonated? Can you say REAGAN?? We allowed our mantra to be hijacked. Our fault, not theirs. They saw what works, ran with it, Kudos. Now, it’s time to move on.
I am weeping for my country. Ten, five, even one year ago, would any of you had believed the proposals that are on the table in THIS country?? We MUST take it back. We MUST look ourselves squarely in the face and say, we did not fight hard enough for our country. We did not fight smart enough for our country. We let ourselves be labeled as being stereotypical bigoted hatemongers…much in the way that a lot of minorities let themselves be labeled because they didn’t fight the stereotypes.
Our message has been, and should continue to be that the individual has power. We should not let others put their labels on us. We should be vocal…loudly so…that anyone, no matter their race, gender, religious affiliation has the capacity to not only suceed, but to excel in this country. That is what we are about, not this “Oh crap, we’re doomed” mentality. Dang it, sorry, but buck up!

Us chickenlittle already knew all this. there is $56 Trillion of credit default swaps out there that are becoming worhtless. that’s 5 years of pre 2008 GDP for the USA. that bill is going to come due rather quickly. We are a service economy. 70% of the economy is consumer spending. If the consumer quits spending we go from a GDP of 12 Trillion to one of maybe $6 Trillion. The Gov spending is now at 3.1 trillion. That means if the gov does not cut spending it will consumer more than 50% of GDP going forward. Obama wants to increase that spending by $1 Trillion.

Advice. buy a good used car that has no payments. Get some gas. If your 401k is still in stocks sell everything. Go to money market. Hope and pray that you keep your job.

Life is going to get real hard real quick. Us rat packs should be ok. Buy a rifle and learn how to hunt.

Order of the Hand. Thanksgiving Day, 2017.

Ed – “AP, I can vouch for him. He knocked off two razordogs that were about to approve my loan to buy the farm.”

AP – “Look Ed, I’m telling you, I saw the bastard back in 08 at the Toledo, OH ACORN office. I make the calls here. As long as I’m chieftain of the Mailed Fist chapter, I f’in make the calls, got it? GOT IT?

Ed – “Got it.”

AP – “He is an infiltrator, trust me. Feed him up with the others tonight for Thanksgiving, getting his guard down, take him out with Manly and two of you know what to do. You know how Manly likes to quietly empty there magazines before the stroll.”

Ed – “Aye.”

AP – “Ed, morale is kinda down now. Rumors are going around that they took out Arctic Fox up north due to us not receiving any news. I don’t believe it with no evidence. I need you and Manly to continue to Gamma Base 4 near Fargo and try to get the latest news and instructions after your stroll with this …’Mr. Oak’ we’ll call him.”

Ed – “No problem. Sorry for chattering up the new guy. It’s just that we could really use another top rifle in the tribe. Can Manly and I take the snowmachine?”

AP – “Sure. The fuel cost means little compared to the need. Godspeed.”

Ed – “UBETCHA”.

After Ed, alias “Beta-male” leaves, the grizzled veteran Allahpundit calmly pulls out a book, a book he once ostracized in the old days and turns to Psalms 23:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

terryannonline on November 14, 2008 at 10:10 PM

I didn’t venture a prediction about unemployment or soup kitchens. I noted only what is fiscally irrefutable: we are a debtor nation, and our debt will soon outstrip our ability to repay.

Don’t take my word for it. Listen to the U.S. Comptroller General. He’s trying desperately to get people to pay attention to the trouble we face, and he’s not talking about anything but entitlements. And entitlements are only part of our problem.

You are about to show me shadows of the things that have not happened, but will happen in the time before us,” Scrooge pursued. “Is that so, Spirit?”

“Spirit!” he cried, tight clutching at its robe, “hear me! I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I must have been but for this intercourse. Why show me this, if I am past all hope?”

Do you honestly believe we are heading for 19 percent unemployment and soup kitchens like in the 1930s. Are you serious???

terryannonline on November 14, 2008 at 10:10 PM

Yes. 6.5% unemployment. that’s $10 million already out of work. Say you double it. $20 million out of work. Government already $10 trillion in debt. 33% of the federal budget goes to pay on the debt. What happens when the gov must choose between paying the interest on its debt, its military, or its social programs. Government needs to cut spending at a time when its citizens will be crying for more aid. IT is unstainable. the only place the gov will be able to go is the rich. They will be able to fund things for a year or so. But that will destroy capital. Without capital you have no job creation.

Things are going to get bad real quick.

I’m not saying that tough financial times aren’t ahead. I just find it alarmist to compare it to the Great Depression. The people who went through the Great Depression suffered a lot so to flippantly compare the current weak American economy to the 30s I think is inappropriate.

terryannonline on November 14, 2008 at 10:29 PM

You know, I was wondering why nobody noticed that the market prices of housing was rising faster than inflation, a sure sign of a bubble.

Well, we now know at least one person with half a brain was focusing on the right statistic. Although it may be too late.

Look. I “get” what you mean. But you are talking as if the Obamanation is rational and can be reasoned with. They cannot.be.turned. A jewish man I respect a great deal with relatives in Israel said to me, “Let Israel burn. They can take care of themselves over there. Obama is our future President.”

Nothing short of a total shock to the system is going to bring them out of it and unfortunately we are all standing in salt water with our hands on the electric switch. So. Batten down your hatches, keep your head down with the rest of us and when this blows over then we will revisit your pep talk and make plans.

what we obviously need to do is go back to the late 1800s, that is when we had a nice stable economy … you know …. money panics, deflation, kids working in coal mines 15 hours a day 6 days a week, tariffs that led to monopolies

good times … good times

The present economy is no where close to that of the Great depression. the problem is that the present economy can not hold. We have a president and a president elect that believe that you can borrow your way to prosperity. It does not work. The bill is coming due. Someone has to pay the butcher’s bill and it will be us and our genration.

The polices that the left wants to enact will make things worse. It will raise unemployment. Will there be breadlines? Maybe not with food stamps. wi;ll stores be empety shelves? We are at a breaking point. What happens if we get a cold winter? A late spring? An early frost. Our food storage is at an all time low because of ethonel.
what happens if china and other countries refuse to lend us money? what happens if the USa gov defaults on its obligations?

the problem with being on the ledge if something else happens you tip over ithat ledge.

Things can turn around. we could go thru a small recession maybe a year or so. get our balance sheets in order and start spending again. I think like $4.00/gal gas Americian will be thinking twice this chirstmas. The economists are expecting a 1-2% increase in holiday sales. What happens if we have a 10-20% decrease in spending?

Walmart is the new breadline.

I myself didn’t say anything about the Great Depression, or make any comparison to it. So you’re responding to something other than what I wrote. I’m talking about fiscal policy.

Watch the video at the link above. (Here’s the link again.) And keep in mind that the comptroller is talking only about entitlements, and that he made his remarks in March 2007, well before we started adding to our debt with the bailouts.

paul006 on November 14, 2008 at 10:44 PM

what happens if china and other countries refuse to lend us money? what happens if the USa gov defaults on its obligations?

Ahem. China has already done that and they are in the process of selling off the T-Bills they own which means they have lost confidence in our ability to repay our debt. And who can blame them when we are printing money so fast the presses are melting down. Gold looks real good to me right now. Did he predict it would be worth $1000 an ounce in less than a year? Hmmmm

BrideOfRove on November 14, 2008 at 10:44 PM

Gomez…oooohhh. I’m thinking ammo, venison jerky, bourbon, the 1973 Ford Country Squire wagon, and RG, and it’s off to the Black Hills.

Similar here except Megyn Kelly for Gomez and sub in an ATV instead of the Squire. I’d probably work the Tennessee River and hook up with a militia.

not this “Oh crap, we’re doomed” mentality. Dang it, sorry, but buck up!

Chewy the Lab on November 14, 2008 at 10:13 PM

Most of us here are just havin’ a good time. And most of us, except maybe for stocking up on foodstuffs, have been prepared for “the revolution” for a long time. It’s just that we want the guh’mint to “leave us the hell alone!”

We are of the “hope for the best, prepare for the worst”, mentality. And nothing that Osamabamamessiah has said or done since 11/4 that would slow us down from preparing for the worst.

I’ve worked in transportation and retail for about three years now. Grocery stores have maybe two days’ worth of food–less if there’s a panic. Having a two week cushion of food and water is only good sense. A storm, brownout, earthquake, bird flueand a number of things which could hamper trucking and disturb one of a dozen different links in the supply line could mess up things. Factor in the very real possibility of another terrorist attack (think of a half-dozen malls or wal-marts being simultaneouslu blown up) or O!s policies actually being implemented, and we’re in deep do-do.

Boy Scouts have it right. Be prepared.

Gold works in an inflationary environment. We are in a deflationary cycle. Gold like all other assets will lose vaule.

The smartest best investment you can make right now is can goods.

Canned goods have gone up 20-40% this last year.

As long as things don’t get too bad, I’m looking forward to a little austerity. What scares me, is how bad things could get. And I’m not just talking about economic downturns. What happens if a nuclear device is detonated in America? What does that do? Imagine 9/11 x 1000. Imagine a small device detonate in lower Manhattan, wiping out the Dow Jones. Literally. The shock from that would plummet the whole civilized world into a pit.

And then there is the ultimate doomsday scenario: Iran launches a ballistic missile 300 – 400 miles into space over the east coast, off of a ship, and detonates an atomic device. Frighteningly, Iran has recently experimented with launching ballistic missiles from ships. The EMP, according to experts, even from a small device, would create an energy pulse that would destroy every computer that was not shielded. It would render our society helpless and motionless, with no way of repairing the damage for years. How long would it take to replace billions of computers and hundreds of trillions of lines of code when you have no computers to make more computers or write more new code? It would put us back to a time when our population was so much smaller than today. The rub is that we can not feed our present population using horse and buggy technology. Mass starvation would result in the first 3-6 months.
