Grahamnesty: Hey, I know an issue McCain and Obama could work together on

posted at 5:45 pm on November 14, 2008 by Allahpundit

A sneak preview of Monday’s tete-a-tete. The One’s going to need a point man on the right to help cram amnesty down America’s piehole, isn’t he?

Let the healing begin.

In an interview Friday, Graham said that Obama requested the meeting during a 20-minute phone call that the South Carolina senator described as a “pleasant” discussion about how they could work together effectively…

[Graham] said the energy package drafted by a bipartisan group of 10 senators, including himself, could easily serve as a model for cooperation with the Obama administration — and something that McCain could help lead on.

Graham said that McCain and Obama are philosophically alike on budget reform, Social Security changes, earmark reform and immigration.

“If the administration wants to move forward with immigration again, I stand ready to do that,” Graham said.

He’s actually inviting Obama to reintroduce the issue. Rahm, at least, has more common sense than that. Exit question: What could be more “statesmanlike” than partnering with the worst open-borders cretins among the Democratic majority to push a bill through? Exit answer: I think you know.

Blowback

This is what the Republican party needs to do to help regain relevance in the world. What needs to happen behind the scenes is that the Republican caucus needs to work with Democrats in heavily unionized areas to fight to make the amnesty plan something other than amnesty. The guest worker thing was a good idea. But, those negotiations have to be done quietly–something that isn’t Mac’s strong suit.

I still find it hilarious that after he gets his ass handed to him, the first two actions McCain takes are to: (1) hang Palin out to dry via his aides and (2) cozy up to Obama. God is punishing the Republican Party for nominating this joker.

Yes, that’s undoubtedly a bill that a majority of Americans would support now — a bill to give millions of illegal aliens the legal right to stay in this country and compete with Americans for scarce jobs. And I’m sure that the majority of Americans are also keen on the prospect of adding tens of millions of undereducated, underskilled, English-deficient illegal aliens to our citizenship rolls, so that they too can partake of all of Obama’s new “tax credit” welfare payments, extended unemployment benefits, “free” health care, etc. Yes, we can certainly afford to take on an additional financial burden that’s likely to cost us trillions more dollars that we don’t have, right? I’m sure every American will be jumping at the bit to get on board with this plan.

Hispanics are 12% of the population, tend to reside in swing states or the South, and are growing fast. They are people who work for a living, by and large, and have social conservative positions and are pretty regular church attendees. That is to say, I think there’s a lot of common ground the GOP has with Hispanic voters. We need to do a better job of reaching out to Hispanic voters by coming up with limited government, rule-of-law, market-based solutions to the concerns and problems facing the Hispanic community.

The last thing we need to do is to stubbornly alienate all Hispanic voters just to prove a freaking point, and turn Hispanics into the next blacks and Jews — i.e., people who will racial-bloc-vote the Democrats in no matter how poorly the Democrats treat them. You do that and you condemn the Republican party to permanent minority status, and then you WILL be living in the Socialist States of America.

Personally, I stopped talking about amnesty for the duration of the campaign (only because I consider Marxist thugs to be bigger threats than most anything else) and just figured that amnesty is going to be a major fight for the life of this nation, anyway. But, even in the best of all possible scenarios now, amnesty will probably go through (with Sen. McCain helping to push it all the way, with a grin) and the US will dissolve no longer than 10 years after.

progressoverpeace on November 9, 2008 at 7:47 PM

Yep. This is going to be a very tough fight. And it will require big rallies in DC, this time.

Watch out. This time they’re going to try and sell the amnesty as an economic pro-growth policy, claiming that foreclosures, … will all hit ‘main street’ and that we need the instant population growth for taxes and the rest. It is going to be very hard to stop them this time.

Are you sure?

Univision: As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?
Sarah Palin: There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant – there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants – not only economically is that just an impossibility but that’s not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Univision: Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?
Sarah Palin: No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. (Me: Yeah, McCain says the same thing.) You know, people have got to follow the rules. They’ve got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

Univision: To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?
Sarah Palin: I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

Hog Wild on November 14, 2008 at 6:01 PM

Sarah Palin support comprehensive immigration reform. She also supports border security. I did not get the impression that she was Tancredo on this issue.

I know a lot of people do not want to hear this, but the truth is conservatives did not do themselves any favors by going crazy on this issue. I am not saying they should support amnesty or anything of the kind, but I do think that some of the rhetoric that was being thrown around back in 2006 hurt Republicans then and even now. The result is a president who is a lot more liberal on this policy than Grahmnesty, Juan McShamnesty and Jorge Busho.

And I am not sure what difference making phone calls will make either because most of the Senators and Congressmen are Democrats and they don’t care what a bunch of conservative Republicans think.

The best chance there is for a tougher policy is those Blue Dogs who will be more vulnerable to voter feedback.

A few points for your consideration:
1. The reason why illegal immigrant labor puts Americans out of work is that employers can violate wage & hour laws, safety laws, minimum wage laws, 941 withholding, etc. with impunity with illegals, because the illegals have no recourse! Companies largely get away with that because they can plausibly say “the I-9 process sucks and we have no way of knowing who is legal and who is not.” So if you do a guest worker system (no path to citizenship) with a swipeable photo ID system, you end that whole abusive cycle. That will reduce the demand for immigrant labor by “leveling the playing field.” Meanwhile, you are telling Hispanics that you respect them and you want them to have jobs if they’re able to find them, etc.

2. Illegal immigrants are already entitled to free health care (EMTALA) and free education (some Supreme Court decision from 20 years ago I’m forgetting). Legalizing them only means you collect taxes.

3. In fairness to immigrants, our immigration system sucks. There is demand for immigrant labor, but if you want to legally immigrate to America from Mexico, it’s a three ring circus that takes years… And then ICE loses your paperwork halfway through. Our immigration system is such an embarrassment that it does not enjoy a presumption of legitimacy. That’s why so many ordinarily law-abiding Hispanics don’t buy into the “illegal immigrants are breaking the law” bit. That has to be fixed.

Outlander on November 14, 2008 at 6:03 PM

progressoverpeace on November 14, 2008 at 5:57 PM

Problem with that argument is that the majority of illegal aliens are poor — and that’s hardly the type of “population growth” we need in our current economic condition. Adding tens of millions of poor to our welfare rolls isn’t going to do anything but further burden our already overwhelmed economy.

And sooner or later, the general public is going to find out that the millions of sub-prime mortgage loans made to illegal aliens that are now in default were a big part of what caused us to be in the mess we’re in now.

44% of Hispanics voted for Bush in 2004. 44% of Hispanics are not Cubans living in Miami. They are persuadable, but if you convince Hispanics that the GOP viscerally hates them, they’ll go lock-step for Democrats.

The goal is not to gain a majority of Hispanic votes — for the reasons you suggest, that’s not terribly likely to happen. The goal is to make it so the Hispanic vote isn’t so lop-sided that the GOP has no chance of being relevant as a national party in the future.

44% of Hispanics voted for Bush in 2004. But in 2004, Bush got a lot of votes because people were still worried about terrorism. Those votes vanished this time around. This time people voted ideologically. Socially, Hispanics are no different from blacks. In fact, there are only two types of street gangs, black and Hispanic. Hispanics are generally low income voters and low income voters vote socialist.

I am aware that illegal aliens have the right to use emergency rooms in the U.S. without paying. Any American who has had the misfortune to need to make an emergency room visit can’t help but be aware of that, especially those of us who live in the southwest. But I was not referring to that particular abuse of our country’s generosity — as maddening as it is. I was referring to the “universal” health care that Obama has promised. Once illegal aliens are given legal status, they’ll be entitled to that coverage, at taxpayer expense. And since most illegal aliens have low incomes, it’s probable that they will not be paying the taxes that will be required to support the new health care coverage — but the rest of us will be.

As for the free public school education that illegal aliens already receive, that is primarily funded by local property taxes. Since the majority of illegal aliens are low-income, most of them will not be purchasing homes (especially now that the sub-prime free ride is over), so they will not be paying the taxes that support the education benefits they are receiving — but, again, the rest of us will be.

As for your contention that hispanics are somehow justified in ignoring our immigration laws because our immigration system does not work as efficiently as it should — that’s BS. One of the main reasons why our immigration system does not work efficiently is because it is so completely overwhelmed, and the reason for that is the tens of millions of hispanics, mainly Mexicans, who have flooded across our southern border in the law couple of decades, in defiance of our laws. They want to be treated with respect in my country? Fine, I’ll be happy to respect them and their rights, just as soon as they start showing some respect to me and mine.

The vast majority of Latinos want affirmative action and all of the freebies. That’s just the way it is. People with busted families vote for the freebies. That also applies to white single moms. The more the family structure gets busted up, the more government we are going to get stuck with, no matter what race or ethnicity it is

mydh12 on November 14, 2008 at 6:26 PM

The last thing we need to do is to stubbornly alienate all Hispanic voters just to prove a freaking point, and turn Hispanics into the next blacks and Jews — i.e., people who will racial-bloc-vote the Democrats in no matter how poorly the Democrats treat them. You do that and you condemn the Republican party to permanent minority status, and then you WILL be living in the Socialist States of America.

Outlander on November 14, 2008 at 5:55 PM

Hang on, hang on, take a deep breath…Whhhh. That’s better.
Quick thoughts:
1)Hispanics have the capacity to be more conservative than conservatives. The legal immigrants resent the heck out of the fact that they fought and clawed their way to come to this country and their bretheren are being given a pass…we can communicate this. Pro-immigrant vs. pro alien. (Cuban vote in Fl not withstanding, call me naive, I think they voted against McCain precisely for this reason, not for hopey/changey)
2)Pro-life: Hit it hard, hit it often and be unrelenting.
3)We WANT to continue to be the country of opportunity. So. Do. They.
Continue on insisting on securing the borders first. This is a winner with the LEGAL hispanics. (Oh, I guess I am naive, illegals can’t vote, right??? without their ACORN creds anyway)
Winner, winner, winner.
BTW: upinak, how’s your pup?

who gives a hoot?

Palin’s views aren’t going to matter now that the dems control the federal government

joey24007 on November 14, 2008 at 6:29 PM

Just what we need – McCain back full speed on the very issue conservatives disliked him for. Anyone else feel used?

Why would anyone expect Palin to have espoused an amnesty position totally opposite from the top of the ticket? Living in Alaska she may not have strong positions one way or the other. Hard to imagine that a lot of illegal immigrants flock to Alaska. So who knows what her own position is. Isn’t it the job of the VP candidate to support the positions of the Pres candidate? Imagine the uproar if Palin had said The Republican Pres camdidate is full of moose droppings – we should round them all up and ship them back.

Just what we need – more people in that 40% of taxpayers who pay NO income tax.

katiejane on November 14, 2008 at 6:29 PM

“If the administration wants to move forward with immigration again, I stand I’m salivating at the thought and ready can’t wait to do that,” Graham said.

fred5678 on November 14, 2008 at 6:30 PM

But then she had no problem disagreeing with him openly on other major policy positions. ANWR drilling, contraception, etc..

amerpundit on November 14, 2008 at 6:26 PM

You and I both know there is a difference between disagreeing over major policy issues and signature policy issues. There is no way she would argue against him on cfr or immigration reform while on the ticket. No way. No would it be appropriate, to be honest.

To get an accurate gauge of her views, you either need information before the vp nom or after the election.

Spirit of 1776 on November 14, 2008 at 6:31 PM

The illegals’ drain on the economy is one of the unspoken reasons for the current collapse.

profitsbeard on November 14, 2008 at 6:32 PM

What republicans should be saying:

Build the fence. Secure the borders to prevent more illegals coming in. Then, come to us, and we’ll talk.

lorien1973 on November 14, 2008 at 6:13 PM

The repulicans in Congress are along for the ride. This crap would have happened had Juan been elected too. Those of us who voted for him should have seen this coming either way.

thomasaur on November 14, 2008 at 6:33 PM

Boo hoo hoo! Tancredo was one of the few who tried to do something. For that, he was ridiculed by AP endlessly.

Blake on November 14, 2008 at 6:35 PM

McCain and Graham are MORONS. Amnesty for illegals would do massive harm to our economy and our national culture. The complete opposite needs to be done.

Just look at some of the sanctuary cities and border states that have been overrun by millions of uneducated, non-English speaking, and often criminal aliens from Mexico.

They’ve destroyed the quality of neighborhoods because of their third world standards for living conditions. They’re costing American taxpayers a ridiculous amount of money as we attempt to educate their often huge litters of children and provide healthcare for their entire families. They’re lowering wages for working class jobs and leaving many Americans looking for work that could feed their families.

Because of this very issue, there are major cities and even states that have been rendered practically uninhabitable.

Couple amnesty with Obama, Pelosi and Reid’s plans for massively expanded government (universal health care and preschool, especially), and you could be seeing the collapse of the United States of America.

Spirit of 1776 on November 14, 2008 at 6:31 PM

I’d have to disagree. Disagreeing on contraception and energy are pretty big deals, especially since energy is an issue that McCain tried to pick up the baton and run with during the election. I honestly don’t think she had a problem publicly disagreeing with his stances.

We shall see.

amerpundit on November 14, 2008 at 6:37 PM

For the record, I’d gladly eat crow on this.

amerpundit on November 14, 2008 at 6:38 PM

Bush did NOT will 44% of the Hispanic vote in 2004. That number came from the same exit polling that said Kerry won the election.

The real number is around 40%. Here’s the link:

Thresher on November 14, 2008 at 6:38 PM

I don’t really give a damn what McCain, or Graham, or even Obama want. It’s the House where this travesty was stopped last time, and it’s there that it will be stopped again. The majority of Americans didn’t want another amnesty when the economy was doing okay, and they sure as hell won’t want one now that our economy is in the toilet (and likely to remain there for some time to come).

If you’ll remember he came around on off shore drilling on his own (kicking and screaming) and she said many times that the ANWR deal was something she hoped to change his mind about. As for amnesty and her true views, I will have to bow to upinak’s better knowledge of her governor until I see or hear differently. But I can certainly understand your astonishment at the interview, until I really paid attention to what she was saying I wasn’t thrilled either. Politicians, they move between taking twenty minutes to say nothing or three minutes to say everything. CYA is an art form with them.

Cindy Munford on November 14, 2008 at 6:39 PM

Oh, and I forgot to add that McCain and Graham are only in it for the votes, which is idiotic of them because as this election demonstrated decisively those are votes they will NEVER get and the attempt only makes conservatives angry enough not to vote for anyone who supports open borders.

Sign of the Dollar on November 14, 2008 at 6:40 PM

I just read that Obama is going to meet with McCain to discuss the establishment of a “team of rivals”. For McCain it simply means, “if you can’t beat them, join them”. McCain never ceases to amaze me.

rplat on November 14, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Can you imagine how the election would have gone if only McCain had the opposite view on illegal immigration, and had sided with the majority of all American citizens? And if he had suspended his campaign to vote AGAINST the bailout?

One can only dream.

I get the impression that illegal immigration wasn’t a top issue in the Alaskan gubernatorial race. Her position certainly isn’t widely-published.
