AP: Palinmania may stop Romney from running in 2012

posted at 2:00 pm on November 14, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

Eh. If there’s any truth to it, I’d say Ambinder is a lot closer to the real reason than the AP is.

The surprising ascendancy of McCain’s eventual pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and her popularity among some GOP conservatives have left Romney wondering whether he could wage a viable second campaign for the White House, according to friends and advisers…

“While (Palin) may not be popular with the winning majority that Barack Obama put together, she’s enormously popular with the losing minority that John McCain put together — and that pretty closely mirrors Republican primary voters,” said Rich Bond, former chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Charley Manning, a Massachusetts Republican operative who has worked as a Romney adviser, recently told a local radio interviewer: “I’d be surprised if Mitt ever ran again for president. I sure don’t think it was the best experience of his life.”

Taking on the ‘Cuda is a fool’s errand only if two things occur: (1) the economy recovers, leaving Mitt without an obvious argument for why the base should prefer him to her, and (2) Huckabee doesn’t run, thereby ceding social cons to Palin. Number one is obviously more important than number two since a sustained crisis would give the GOP a shot at the White House; absent that, I’m not sure why any Republican would want to run in 2012, especially a guy like Mitt who had to eat a ton of campaign debt this year and would probably end up on the hook for a ton more trying to take down The One’s money machine.

For a guy who’s supposedly sour on the idea, though, he sure seems to be making the right moves:

Now the onetime front-runner for the Republican nomination is schmoozing influential party insiders on the National Review’s annual cruise — a gathering of 700 conservative activists and the same forum where Palin wowed the movement’s media elite last year, beginning her meteoric rise from obscure governor to vice presidential nominee.

But even as Romney publicly declares he has no intentions to run again, several former aides said they believe he will, and this week’s get-together with leading conservatives is only the latest sign the man who spent more than $50 million of his own money to vie for the party’s nomination last year is itching to do it again…

Romney also has maintained close relationships with key supporters in the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire, according to party officials there, and could easily revive the infrastructure he built should he launch another bid.

A free-for-all for the nomination between him, Huck, and Palin would be fascinating insofar as it would leave Mitt open to tack gently away from the culture warrior persona he cultivated last year and be more of the technocrat he seems better suited to being. He could never challenge either of them for the love of evangelicals, so why try? I never really understood his stress on social conservatism anyway, except as a form of gross overcompensation for his previous heresies on abortion. Anyone can say “life begins at conception,” but how many people can organize the Olympics?

Almost as fascinating, but in a distinctly darker way, will be seeing who emerges as the nominee if Obama’s first term is successful. Who’s old enough and ambitious enough that they wouldn’t mind the agony of a longest-of-long-shots campaign for the presidency? The only obvious person is Newt. Exit question: Er, who’s going to be the “national security candidate” next time? Is there anyone in the party’s top tier at this point with notable credentials in that area?

Romney plays his violin now dropping rumors that he “might not run because of Palinmania” in order to get the Romniacs to start speaking up in his support. Its like a pavlovian experiment to see who starts foaming at the mouth & take a headcount of his minions.

I don’t blame him, he has just as much right as Palin in 2012. They both lost this time out.

portlandon on November 14, 2008 at 4:20 PM

Unless I missed a it, you can tell how bad the trolls hate Gov. Palin when the mention of Gov. Jindal did not bring out the seance posts. She obviously must be destroyed first.

Is that the attitude of someone who wants to be CIC? He would do better to keep quiet for two years. All of them should be doing the best damn job for this country that they can do. Everyone is too busy freaking out about the guy who just got elected. I don’t want to hear about who’s feelings are hurt on our side. Bunch of babies.

Cindy Munford on November 14, 2008 at 4:25 PM

If Mitt Romney needs a job, let me suggest this one: The old Chappaquiddick Teddy Bear isn’t too healthy right now, and may need to retire soon. Mitt should run for his seat.

Unless he wants to run for his dad’s seat in Michigan. What’s good for General Motors is good for America, right?

Steve Z on November 14, 2008 at 4:31 PM

it might stop me from voting for the republican nominee. Look I like Palin just fine, but she is well behind other republicans in terms of ability, and in who would make the best President.

She is developing an Obama-esque cult following.

brandozilla on November 14, 2008 at 2:06 PM

Yah….. :) I was looking at the photo again of her with the shotgun on her shoulder from 2002.

I’m naming my next dog Sarah.

Sapwolf on November 14, 2008 at 4:34 PM

You know something? If Obama pulls to the middle before the next election in 2012, and appears to be too strong to run against, Mitt would make a very good and respectable candidate as a placeholder to lose to Obama but without damaging the GOP further. Would he do it? I don’t know.

I tend to be a person that would want to help, but I would only do it IF I felt the GOP was making the right moves to strengthen it for 2014 and 2016 as the conservative, limited government party of freedom for the future.

Also,

Does anybody think Petraeus will get into politics? He could be great civilian leader, maybe.

Sapwolf on November 14, 2008 at 4:39 PM

Southerners love their military. No need for a straight up socon-only guy like Huckabee with Petraeus on your ticket or top of the ticket.

I happen to think Palin/Petreaus or Petreaus/Palin would be good. It assumes that Palin gets more experience and education on national economic issues. We already know she is a fiscal conservative and government reform candidate.

Sapwolf on November 14, 2008 at 4:42 PM

well we have lowered the bar on what is acceptable knowledge of national security and foreign affairs for becoming President

joey24007 on November 14, 2008 at 4:17 PM

I agree to a point. Reagan was a Governor of California who could see Mexico from his backyard and successfully took down the Soviets. George W Bush was a Governor from Texas who has crippled the worst Terrorist Organization in the world. Governors display common sense (absent in Washington DC) that they gain from experience running their state as an independent test study on how they would run the Government.

I prefer President to be Governors because they have experience with making everyday, life changing decisions. The buck stops with them. They don’t live in the vacuum of Washington DC. When the **** hits the fan, Senators stand around pointing 100 fingers at each other spreading the blame around with a smile on their faces.

portlandon on November 14, 2008 at 4:44 PM

How about Haley Barbour? … I mean he doesn’t come across as a regional candidate!

joey24007 on November 14, 2008 at 2:08 PM

Yes he does. He comes across as a Southerner.

joey24007 on November 14, 2008 at 4:46 PM

I do not think General Petreaus will enter the political arena at all. Lots of people wanted Gen Tommy Franks to run for President, but he was too smart for that.

The good General will serve out his term as CENTCOM Commander, and if Obama has any sense he will beg to let him appoint him to that post again, or maybe Army Chief of Staff, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He will retire from the military sometime, but I don’t see him running for anything.

Brian1972 on November 14, 2008 at 4:46 PM

Portland,

You broke up my ‘Connect 4′. But I liked your post. Senators don’t lead. They do a lot of finger pointing. Reid is a master of it.

Sapwolf on November 14, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Palinomics!

It just rolls off of the tongue

joey24007 on November 14, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Why the hell would someone as popular with her constituents and her national party as Sarah is go into the Senate where their approval rating is %9? Where if you try to do anything constructive, the old guard will shut you down and cut you off at the knees? Just ask one of my favorite Senators, Tom Coburn (R-OK). He’s a voice in the wilderness.

Brian1972 on November 14, 2008 at 4:50 PM

Dumb questions from an Aussie:

(a) Apart from Governors rather than senators usually getting a guernsey in the White House, I thought it was natural for candidates to get drilled on the national security/foreign policy question. Didn’t Bush when he ran? And well it didn’t strike me as a big issue in the closing stages of this campaign anyway – it usually comes down to domestic issues anyway doesn’t it.

Good grief American didn’t just vote for the total neophyte Obambi (that word is banned at the Chicago Tribune by the way, even though you can slag Catholics and Christians and conservatives to your heart’s content; one must not touch the O – although personally I prefer an Aussie variations: ‘the metrosexual Mugabe’) but Biden!!!! At least Palin had some minor dealings with foreign trade delegations, fishing rights disputes etc. Minor but something.

(b) unless you guys want to vote in a lame duck president shouldn’t you be focussing on 2010?

Romney is done and Huck is useless.

Palin should do just what Charles Krauthammer advised last night. Over the next two years, read up on all the issues. He said he’s a very intelligent woman who just needs to sharpen up. If Obama pulls a Carter on us, she should run in 2012. If Obama is mediocre at best, hold off until ‘16.

If Obama has fair approval ratings, let Newt have a crack at it. I’d love to watch the debates.

You immediately pidgeon hole people that don’t agree with you…typical of some breeds.
She is an extremely accomplished leader, she has that special factor (that you don’t see) that connects to people. Listen, many people hated Reagan for the same reason. Many people don’t like leaders that attract a lot of attention, and that are natural leader born leaders. Everything she has done has been marked with success.
So it amazes me when someone says she is behind in ability (compared to what other Republican leader that has a shot at the White House)…what ability is she behind in and relative to whom?

What the hell is the matter with you people? If you don’t know why you’re a conservative at 44 you shouldn’t be running for office, you should be voting for a REAL CONSERVATIVE LEADER who actually walks the walk. Wouldn’t her inability to express her principles, principles based on issues she knows nothing about, get any of you knuckleheads to stop and think for a second? That’s why she should never be compared to Reagan, Reagan at least had a record of espousing conservative principles.

LevStrauss on November 14, 2008 at 5:27 PM

I like Palin but I’m willing to look at them all – see who wants it – see who seems ready – see what happens with Obama.

Hey there, all y’all “2012’s too far away” types …how many of you voted for, oh, say, Huckabee?

That’s what I thought.

The time for action is NOW.

Palin. Jindal. We can use the bench strength to undo the damage Obama’s about to do unless you all can persuade Justice Clarence Thomas to hear the case on Obama’s fraudulent Selective Service registration, which has just come out recently since Souter’s clerk REFUSED to pass it on to him. Pam Gellar has more on it for those interested.

In the meantime, half of you go to Georgia and the other half go to Minnesota -and DO NOT let Minnesotan dead people’s hanging chads give the Dems a 60 seat supermajority.

BemusedMalkinite on November 14, 2008 at 5:27 PM

I caught some of McCain’s appearance at the Saxby rally on CSPAN last night. One of the first things he said was “I bring greetings from the great Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin! (big big cheers) She’s goona make every effort to get down here and help Saxby back to the Senate!(bigger bigger cheers)”

So, Saxby Chambliss is not a total idiot. Sarah will get him some fundraising action going, and a nice big fired up crowd or two. The rest is up to him to beat the Obama turnout machine in Georgia. We shall see if they are still pissed enough at him over the gangs of this or that to stay home.

IMHO, “Palinmania” will not last until 2010. This cult of personality will die from hunger when she goes back to Alaska and leaves the national spotlight. Don’t get me wrong, she will be a darling of the right but Romney will not have to face the behemoth known as “Palinmania” as it is currently constituted. Let us not forget she’s been on the national stage for under 3 months. The momentum she made in those 3 months cannot and will not carry her 4 years, anyone who thinks otherwise should get their head examined.

I have watched them all and he said the exact same thing in every one. To suggest that Palin is not conservative is insulting to anyone who can think. Jindal is a very impressive guy, a staunch conservative, but boring. I hate to break it to you folks, but in the age of youtube and 24/7 news, charisma and communication ability is just as important, if not more important than a coherent message. Look at Obama. This is especially true after having a president for 8 years who is embarassing in that area. Palin is far from perfect and she clearly has some work to do, but like it or not, she is the new face of the party.

From the Anchorage Daily News:

“The Wall Street Journal has a short item today on the Republican Governors Association picking new leadership, noting that Gov. Sarah Palin isn’t on the list.

Yesterday, we talked to political science professor Frank Gilliam, dean of the UCLA School of Public Affairs, about Palin’s next move in national politics — including a potential senate run. Gilliam, who’d been following coverage of Palin’s appearance at the RGA meeting this week, had this to say:

‘There is some concern inside the Republican party that she has been circumventing establishment Republican circles, that she has been running a media campaign of which the party’s certainly not controlling and therefore either being self-anointed or media-anointed as the future of the Republican party.’

And: ‘The party likes to control things. You know, they think they control money, they think they control state party machines, and she may decide that she doesn’t need them, and that may be their concern.

That’s going to sound familiar to anyone who was here for Palin’s battle against the state GOP in 2006.”

Hhmmm…we all know how that turned out.

To Micheal regarding Palinmania dying away by 2010: it will only die away if Sarah wants it to die away, Sarah dies herself (please God no) or if she is involved in such a huge scandal that causes her supporters to regard her with the greatest contempt imaginable. Other than that, until she has retired from national politics Sarah will be beloved by her followers. Elvis died in 1976; his legend has not disappeared. Marilyn died in 1962; her memory has not died. Right now Sarah is as famous as Elvis, Marilyn and of course Tiger.

Yeah, they’d look really sharp and competent giving the post-mortem following yet another Republican electoral defeat.

ddrintn on November 15, 2008 at 12:23 AM

Jindal is a very impressive guy, a staunch conservative, but boring. I hate to break it to you folks, but in the age of youtube and 24/7 news, charisma and communication ability is just as important, if not more important than a coherent message.

I hate to break it to you, but Simple Sarah IS NOT charismatic and pleasing to listen to for the MAJORITY OF FOLKS which are needed to win elections.

Oh and just to clarify, maybe you guys should look at a youtube of any of Jindal’s recent appearances on TV and then look at Palin at her best, there is no comparison and there is only one conservative between them.

LevStrauss on November 14, 2008 at 5:31 PM

I also do not believe Simple Sarah is a conservative. She certainly seems NOT to be raising her kids with family values in mind. Do the FAR-RIGHT conservatives REALLY KNOW their beloved Ms. Right Wing Messiah???!!!

This website both confirms and debunks rumors and facts regarding Sarah, and includes references:

1. Yes, she was apparently pregnant when she got married.

2. Yes, there are people in Alaska who think she’s too liberal.

3. Yes, she did want authority to have wolves culled from the air. No, she isn’t shooting them herself. I mean, not that she couldn’t, but I’m sure she doesn’t have time.

4. Yes, she did smoke marijuana, when it was legal in Alaska. Yes, she apparently did inhale.

5. Yes, it appears that she has a Big Dipper tattooed on her ankle.

6. Yes, Bristol appears to have had sex with her fiancee. No, Bristol didn’t receive only “abstinence-only” sex ed.

7. Yes, her 17 year old daughter is pregnant.

8. Yes, she did try, clearly unsuccessfully, to get Bristol married off to her fiancee before the story came out

I’m assuming you’re referring to McCain? He lost because of Simple Sarah. Independents went to Obama by a 10% margin. The majority of ALL voters felt SS was NOT competent to be just a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Shelby on November 15, 2008 at 12:53 AM

Mmmmm

Speaking of following those who ‘want it.

You guys are deluding yourselves if you really think
HUCK = NO.

In the days since the election, he has launched a conservative policy and activism think tank, inked a deal with ABC radio that will reach 105 million listeners five days a week, and solidified his number one spot in his time slot on FOX every weekend, averaging approx 2 million viewers per show.

He finished 2nd to McCain, and you delude yourself if you think Mitt could have beat him in the deep red states that were coming up before he so ‘graciously’ bowed out of the race.

If the Huck haters plan on the power of talk radio to derail him, I remind you they’re 0 for 3. Not their nominee, not their vp, not their president in 2008.

Huck is bypassing the media filter and going straight to the people. To get to know him, is to be able to tune out the political spin for what it is when the time comes.

You want to know who wants it.. Huck wants it.. and from where I’m sitting he’s got a pretty good headstart on the rest of em.

He is, incidentally going to be in Georgia on sunday stumping for Saxby. Where’re all the other challegers to be?

Mitt? Schoozing on a cruise talking the ‘theory’ of conservatism while Mike is out trying to preserve the reality of it. Don’t know where the rest’ve em are at.. but not in Georgia..

This little ‘everybody hates Huck’ bubble that this community seems to live in is in for a rude awakening.

Romney seeks help for at-risk GOP senators
Mitt Romney is coming to the aid of two fellow Republicans still locked in election battles that could determine the shape of the US Senate, urging his supporters to donate to their campaigns.

Through his Free and Strong America political action committee, Romney is featuring Senators Saxby Chambliss of Georgia and Norm Coleman of Minnesota.

Chambliss faces a runoff next month with Democrat Jim Martin, after neither won a majority in a three-way race last week. Coleman is in a recount with Democrat Al Franken after a bitter, nasty campaign.

happen to think Palin/Petreaus or Petreaus/Palin would be good. It assumes that Palin gets more experience and education on national economic issues. We already know she is a fiscal conservative and government reform candidate.

Sapwolf on November 14, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Petraeus would get eaten alive by the Palinmaniac, TC crowd.

Lots of the MDSers were clamoring for Petraeus this year too, without realizing that the Good General is just as much of a centrist as McCain?

Squid Shark on November 15, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Sarah had nothing to do with Romney’s chances. He is Mormon. The Gays and many other Gay sympathizers will not give him a chance. I think Sarah would make a great President. I also love Hunter, Jindal, etc. There are a lot of choices. I love Romney, but not sure if he would win. We cannot afford a loser again.

Palin is dumber than Dan Quayle and Miss South Carolina combined. An Alaskan moose has more intelligence than Palin. Please stop this political suicide. Just because she can read the Teleprompter well and connects with Joe’s across America doesn’t make her Presidential. We need Newt-Romney 2012.

I heard her say same thing. What is with some, that think just because one is pregnant. They have to marry? Is no ones business on that. She is letting her choose, and not rush into marriage. Is why so many get divorced. They don’t weigh in the pro’s and the con’s.

sheebe on November 15, 2008 at 10:25 AM

I also do not believe Simple Sarah is a conservative. She certainly seems NOT to be raising her kids with family values in mind. Do the FAR-RIGHT conservatives REALLY KNOW their beloved Ms. Right Wing Messiah???!!! apparently you are from a different branch of the FAR-Right than the Palin supporters are – especially since you seem to ignore the Mormom baggage but somehow are still hung up on Palin’s personal life. A Romeney-Petraeus ticket would put the entire electorate into a coma. Romney would be good in a Cabinet position in spite of his rather plastic personna.

1. Yes, she was apparently pregnant when she got married. So what – do you think that the Right actually thinks that no teens have sex? More importantly she didn’t abort the child – based on being one month pregnant she may not have even known she was pregnant

2. Yes, there are people in Alaska who think she’s too liberal. Again – so what

3. Yes, she did want authority to have wolves culled from the air. No, she isn’t shooting them herself. I mean, not that she couldn’t, but I’m sure she doesn’t have time. That method of wildlife management is reasonable – no problem to me that she supported it or even if she did it herself

4. Yes, she did smoke marijuana, when it was legal in Alaska. Yes, she apparently did inhale. Another so what. If it was legal where she did it it still is better than Clinton and Obama.

5. Yes, it appears that she has a Big Dipper tattooed on her ankle. This matters to someone?

6. Yes, Bristol appears to have had sex with her fiancee. No, Bristol didn’t receive only “abstinence-only” sex ed. So all that proves is that teaching kids specifics about birth control isn’t any better than abstinence alone – teens do stupid things.

7. Yes, her 17 year old daughter is pregnant. And she is facing the consequences of her choices rather than aborting her child. That seems like a plus in my book

8. Yes, she did try, clearly unsuccessfully, to get Bristol married off to her fiancee before the story came out. Ever consider that she may have been trying to protect her daughter from nasty comments about the situation?
Shelby on November 15, 2008 at 12:49 AM

I actually don’t understand why anything in your list makes her not conservative. I don’t recall her ever being painted as being “The Chosen One” like Obama. Just because YOU don’t like her doesn’t mean others don’t see her as being charismatic and adding a good voice to the GOP.

There are thousands of Straight people that support Gays rights to marry. The Gays have not begun to start their Crusade! It sucks, I am against that. But, they have more pull then one thinks. How about Romney/Palin 2012? I woulda liked that this time around. They’re both sincere people of pretty good character. Mitt! has economics covered, Sarah has the social side covered, and national security … they’re Republicans, they naturally have that covered. Mitt’s dull though. Even McCain with his “Fight! Fight!
