AP: Palinmania may stop Romney from running in 2012
posted at 2:00 pm on November 14, 2008 by Allahpundit
Eh. If there’s any truth to it, I’d say Ambinder is a lot closer to the real reason than the AP is.
The surprising ascendancy of McCain’s eventual pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and her popularity among some GOP conservatives have left Romney wondering whether he could wage a viable second campaign for the White House, according to friends and advisers…
“While (Palin) may not be popular with the winning majority that Barack Obama put together, she’s enormously popular with the losing minority that John McCain put together — and that pretty closely mirrors Republican primary voters,” said Rich Bond, former chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Charley Manning, a Massachusetts Republican operative who has worked as a Romney adviser, recently told a local radio interviewer: “I’d be surprised if Mitt ever ran again for president. I sure don’t think it was the best experience of his life.”
Taking on the ‘Cuda is a fool’s errand only if two things occur: (1) the economy recovers, leaving Mitt without an obvious argument for why the base should prefer him to her, and (2) Huckabee doesn’t run, thereby ceding social cons to Palin. Number one is obviously more important than number two since a sustained crisis would give the GOP a shot at the White House; absent that, I’m not sure why any Republican would want to run in 2012, especially a guy like Mitt who had to eat a ton of campaign debt this year and would probably end up on the hook for a ton more trying to take down The One’s money machine.
For a guy who’s supposedly sour on the idea, though, he sure seems to be making the right moves:
Now the onetime front-runner for the Republican nomination is schmoozing influential party insiders on the National Review’s annual cruise — a gathering of 700 conservative activists and the same forum where Palin wowed the movement’s media elite last year, beginning her meteoric rise from obscure governor to vice presidential nominee.
But even as Romney publicly declares he has no intentions to run again, several former aides said they believe he will, and this week’s get-together with leading conservatives is only the latest sign the man who spent more than $50 million of his own money to vie for the party’s nomination last year is itching to do it again…
Romney also has maintained close relationships with key supporters in the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire, according to party officials there, and could easily revive the infrastructure he built should he launch another bid.
A free-for-all for the nomination between him, Huck, and Palin would be fascinating insofar as it would leave Mitt open to tack gently away from the culture warrior persona he cultivated last year and be more of the technocrat he seems better suited to being. He could never challenge either of them for the love of evangelicals, so why try? I never really understood his stress on social conservatism anyway, except as a form of gross overcompensation for his previous heresies on abortion. Anyone can say “life begins at conception,” but how many people can organize the Olympics?
Almost as fascinating, but in a distinctly darker way, will be seeing who emerges as the nominee if Obama’s first term is successful. Who’s old enough and ambitious enough that they wouldn’t mind the agony of a longest-of-long-shots campaign for the presidency? The only obvious person is Newt. Exit question: Er, who’s going to be the “national security candidate” next time? Is there anyone in the party’s top tier at this point with notable credentials in that area?

I’m thinking Romney may stop Romney from running.
Hey, voted for the guy in the primaries, but honestly I do not see him getting through his own image troubles to become President.
kybowexar on November 14, 2008 at 2:01 PM
Whether in 2012 or 2016, I hope he runs again. Mitt would make an excellent President, and he’d be perfect to clean up the monumental mess Obama is going to leave behind.

Good. Don’t need him running. He lost to effing McCain for gawdsake.

I don’t understand why he doesn’t resonate with people. He’s great on paper but I could never get excited about him.

it might stop me from voting for the republican nominee. Look I like Palin just fine, but she is well behind other republicans in terms of ability, and in who would make the best President.
She is developing an Obama-esque cult following.
brandozilla on November 14, 2008 at 2:06 PM
Dude, I don’t know where you’re getting this insane idea that The One’s term will be successful.
There is a HUGE recession coming, there’s no way to stop it. All he can do is tinker around the edges and try and hold it off for a time. He can’t even do a New Deal and grow government jobs since our economy is less fundamentally sound than it was in the 1930s.
This helps a free market captialist for 2012, but only if they can explain how capitalism can fix the mess, as Reagan did.
lodge on November 14, 2008 at 2:06 PM
I voted for him in the primary, but I think now he should go back to doing what he does best – running corporations and making lots and lots of money, which in turn will help our economy.

Sammy316 on November 14, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Energy issues, national security issues, problems with liberal policies, etc.
There’s a lot of issues we can’t predict that could put 2012 up for grabs and give Republicans a shot.
thirteen28 on November 14, 2008 at 2:08 PM
I don’t know why one would assume Obama’s first term will be successful. Unless the bar for success is being lowered to “he didn’t get us into a depression”. And hell, even that’s not a guarantee if he goes through with jacking up taxes.
Now that being said, he could be a disaster in his first term and still win reelection. The majority of the drive-bys will remain loyal, he’ll be able to raise hundreds of millions, and he’ll continue to benefit from a huge black voter turnout. All that could put him over the top no matter who the GOP runs against him.
Doughboy on November 14, 2008 at 2:09 PM
Doesn’t that disqualify the whole 2008 GOP primary field? No Huck, no Rudy, no Fred, etc.
SAZMD on November 14, 2008 at 2:09 PM
I think Mitt would be well positioned to run in ’12. I doubt Obama’s term will yield anything closely resembling economic prosperity. Dependent on how bad it gets, and when it gets bad (ie will be it be attributable to Bush), ’12 might be a rebound year.
Palin, imo, needs a second term as governor before a serious run at President.
Spirit of 1776 on November 14, 2008 at 2:10 PM
Four years is a long time. Will the next four be so bad that the country will swing back Conservative? Probably. Would a 65 year old Romney compete well with a 49 year old Palin?
On age alone, Palin beats Romney-he’s a great man, but the last great man McCain nearly buried us. I like both Palin and Romney, but would choose Palin
Also, consider that Dem President Obama will be hard to unseat. I don’t want the next Presidential election to be another “old man’s last chance to win”. Sorry, Mitt-I’m witt Sarah.
Doug on November 14, 2008 at 2:10 PM
2012 isn’t going to happen for Palin… she should take another turn at governor and try the Senate… we need someone who can execute and has a philosophical basis they can articulate which isn’t just reaganite sentiment…

Yet another reason why I want both the ‘Cuda and Jindal to wait til 2016. Why waste your shot if the media’s going to fawn over The One the whole time he’s in office? And if you think they’re not going to give him pass on everything but the most colossal screw ups in history, I think you’re kidding yourself.
Plus that gives more time to show governing chops, bone up on policy, distill governing philosophy and vision, build good will in the party, and build a first class team for the run.

The “problem” is that Obama might not be incompetent enough to keep the economy down for more than three years. If there is any upturn around the time of the primaries, the press will sell it as Obama leading us out of the darkness.

I love Palin, but I think Romney is the better person to support. However, both need to be on the same team along with all the other great conservatives, or we’ll be doomed to another loss.
ErinF on November 14, 2008 at 2:13 PM
I agree. Jindal might pan out nicely, but Pawlenty isn’t going to be President.
Spirit of 1776 on November 14, 2008 at 2:13 PM
There is no way the economy recovers by 2010, which is the most important election, so concentrate on that. It is unlikely to be much better by 2012, even if the turd does nothing, which is unlikely. If he manages to pass a fraction of what he wants, the ground is clear for any GOP candidate to wipe the floor with him. If Romney, Palin and Huckabee are the three front runners, Romney wins. Not an endorsement, just an observation. The economy rules for the forseeable future, and two social cons vs an economic con gives the benefit to the economic con.
Vashta.Nerada on November 14, 2008 at 2:14 PM
Great you have succeeded in exaggerating her resume, all you need now is a sweet slogan like “hope”.
Jindal has done more in less then a year than Palin has, he’s cut taxes, managed a huge emergency with great success and brought about ethics reform. Plus he is clearly more intelligent then Palin.
brandozilla on November 14, 2008 at 2:14 PM
I hope he runs. It will be practice for the others running in 2012. I like Romney, I like Palin. I do NOT like Huckabee. Maybe a Romeny/Palin or Palin/Romeny ticket would work out. Who knows. Its too damned early yet so why keep staring into a crystal ball that won’t be plugged in until 2010?

No, Mitt was pushing for the bailout. Hank was a Goldman Sachs CEO. Mitt was some economic CEO. They’re the same and would have taken the same course.

even though Joe Biden is probably the dumbest person to ever be elected to the U.S. Senate, the media still liked the idea of his “experience” to bolster Obama’s lack of it

Petraeus. If Iraq goes terribly south after we leave, Obama decides to quit on Afghanistan, or another terror attack here in the U.S., I expect a huge movement to get him to run.
Possibly MacArthur redux, but to his credit, Petraeus isn’t an egotistical primadonna. He also might not be much of a Republican, either– GO’s rarely are.

Why in the name of Heaven would any conservative want Romney to run for president again? That the party insiders and press is even contemplating this guy shows that the Republican party is LOST. This country is about to reap in a major way what it has sown over the past five decades. I just hope that there is something left to salvage when it is over. The Republicans are getting what they deserve (and when I say that, I don’t mean the conservatives who make up the party – I am talking about the party filled with politicians and elite snobs whose only goal is power) and until they pull their collective heads out of their collective asses, they will continue to lose to socialism.

nazo311 on November 14, 2008 at 2:31 PM
I don’t know why are we talking about 2012 already. Isn’t it a little too soon? We haven’t learned yet the lessons from this year and I mean how we got beaten by a grass root mobilization, by message and so on. And we are wondering who is going to be better positioned to run against Obama in 4 years?
As a personal opinion I don’t think Romney can do too much to rebrand himself and connect with the people. And Palin, if she really wants to run in 2012 she needs to learn a little more and add a little experience on her resume.
clemycali on November 14, 2008 at 2:32 PM
Agreed. It’s just too far away. I think who our candidate is will depend upon what is happening in the country and the world at the time. If our economy is in the dumps, Romney might have a shot. If we have another major terrorist attack on US soil, we may look for someone like Petraeus.
