Unbelievable: GOP governors sniping at Palin over press conference

To my fellow bloggers: The next time you get an e-mail from someone saying it’s time to organize a conservative netroots, bear in mind that it’s these morons, by and large, whom that person wants you to support. The same people who couldn’t muster a judgment on the bailout independent of Nancy Pelosi being a big meanie, the same people who can’t organize a press conference without having it descend into backbiting and recriminations.
Some Republican governors tell CNN they were not particularly happy with the way the Republican Governors Association press conference was executed Thursday, saying that they agreed to go as a show of GOP governors’ unity — but they ended up feeling like silent Palin supporters, since it was clearly a press conference called for her.
The GOP governors spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity.
One called it awkward: “I’m sure you could see it on some of our faces.”
Another Republican governor eyeing a presidential run in 2012 told CNN the event was “odd” and “weird,” and said it “unfortunately sent a message that she was the de facto leader of the party.”
This isn’t about Palin, it’s about basic competence on messaging. The McCain camp couldn’t manage it and now the governors can’t either. Who’s left?

Palin repeats herself too much when she talks and her sentences are often filled with non sequiturs. She really needs to join toastmasters or get a speech coach or something.

Did anyone care about this same Governors meeting the past 4 years? If Sarah brings them media, and attention because she’s one week out of a national campaign where she drew massive crowds, then those ingrates should be happy.

In that picture, my Governor, Rick Perry has a bitter look on his face. If he thinks for one second he has a big future in our party, then either he is deeeelusional, or we are frigged!
He is George Bush light, without all of W’s good characteristics.

“With only occasional exceptions, you’re on safe ground dismissing any statement containing the phrase “the Christian Right” as complete and utter crap.”
The GOP is a dead duck. They will try to destroy Sarah Palin, or anyone else who threatens their hold on power. Sarah Palin is just the lightning rod here. The Democrats/MSM will co-operate in this as it is to their advantage as well. Losing the next election is not as great a threat to these insiders as an actual conservative is. The George Will, Noonan, Brooks, and McCain crowd will not stop until one of their own is assured the candidacy for 2012.
McCain wasn’t all that upset by losing the election because in truth he really didn’t lose anything. He is still in Washington, he will still be invited to all the parties, and can ‘reach across the aisle’ to earn his daily bread. The insiders are no different. Losing an election is one thing, but giving the reigns of power to outsiders is another, and they aren’t going to do it.
They will not change the way they behave and IMHO there is nothing conservatives can do about it because they are the GOP. The GOP is not conservative and conservatives are wasting their time trying to ‘reform’ the GOP.
sharrukin on November 13, 2008 at 6:52 PM
The GOP is in a world of hurt until it can get it’s house into order. This isn’t the behavior of people that have the capacity to win.

I love all of you who talk about Palin as though she is the messiah of the GOP. I would like to see her do at least one semi hostile interview where she doesn’t come off as a bumbling clueless retard before I am willing to entrust the entire nation to her. Apparently, you have no such standard.

I doubt, very seriously if anyone said this. C’mon, this fits right in with everything else the press has done. The press and the dems DO NOT want Palin coming back for 2012.

…true, they both ran as “mavericks”…and the old-boy network, their party, as well as pundits from coast to coast, bailed…that is what I was referring to….
…they sure seemed enthusiastic at the convention…there was the usual “these hicks weren’t smart enough to pick me” faces in the convention crowd, but the rank and file seemed pretty supportive….
…but, the Chris Buckley’s and the George Will’s and now, it seems, even people within the McCain campaign all either skulked back to their ivory towers or wrote in glowing terms of the charisma and excellent demeanor of Mr. Obama…so, it seems that it was more the old-boy network’s bolting than Gov. Palin’s “shortcomings” which gummed up the works…that was what I was referring to….
…it would seem that the benighted conservative intelligensia have no more use for the base — to whom Gov. Palin appealed in spades — than did/do the Democrats….
…”No peasants need apply”….
Puritan1648 on November 13, 2008 at 6:57 PM
It was originally just supposed to be her right? Then during their morning meeting they all decided to go out with her. Then afterward they’re whining about it. Shut up you idiots. If they were going to whine later then they should have either cancelled it, or insisted that it be a joint press conference.
You gotta give credit where it’s due: Obama and the Democrats were and are a hell of a lot more on message and disciplined then the Republicans lately. We have got to get it together if we have any chance in 2010. Sure the Democrats are going to screw up, but they aren’t just going to hand power over.

Palin 2012, what could go wrong?
Dash on November 13, 2008 at 6:59 PM
They really are starting to become an embarassment. I said it on another thread and I’ll say it on this one: these other governors need to learn to lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way. Palin has personality, charisma, knowledge (nowhere to go but up building smarts and a resume), and a backbone. These idiots need to grow a pair and maybe even show a little personality if they want to be a part of the movement leadership. She is not the only leader in the GOP, but they need to understand that she is a leading contributor. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t even know that friggin’ conference was going on. Take advantage of it, don’t turn it into a replay of fourth grade “A” crowds and popularity contests. Good Lord, no wonder we lost.

Gina on November 13, 2008 at 7:02 PM
Though her opening was a bit long, she kept referring to the ‘team,’ of Governors, trying to include them in the conference. It is not her fault that reporters continually directed their questions to her and not to them. This whining, prima dona, crybaby routine Republicans have been doing since the election has got to stop. Seems like Sarah is the only one who refuses to boo hoo over every little slight.
Knowledge can be acquired, and knowledgeable experts can be hired as advisor, but finding someone with backbone is much harder, and Sarah has it. These ‘anonymous’ whiners and backstabbers don’t.
Mr A on November 13, 2008 at 7:02 PM
Seriously? Did she just walk in the room or was she just not paying attention to Palin’s statement five minutes before? And journalists wonder why people think so low of them.
Or perhaps that question was so nuanced that I didn’t understand. After all, we are entering an new “age of intellectualism.”
Mallard T. Drake on November 13, 2008 at 7:03 PM
I had never heard of the RGA before this. These other Governors need to realize the media has a fixation of destroying Palin – so they want to ask her questions and put her on the defensive.
Republicans are the Stupid Party. We shoot our own right in the back. Palin was just answering the questions that were pointed right at her.
These Governors should concentrate not on personal gratification but on conservative ideas.
They dont get it yet. Jindal was right – its not who as much as what ideas Republicans stand for.
2012 doesnt look good at this rate.

Excellent points made tonite on how hard Mrs. Palin must work on her delivery to others…but not to me. I have nothing to fear from a courageous individual who speaks on behalf of life, responsibility, and love of country. I just have a ways to go. She’s like the Tinman, Lion and the Scarecrow wrapped in one. Way better than I with more education and money than she.

That paragraph is a mess. Context or no.
She is smart, she is tough, she has many accomplishments, she is great.
Her communication skills need work.
It will only help the party for her not to be the entire focus. There are some other bright stars out there.

mad_cow on November 13, 2008 at 7:07 PM
I agree 100%
It is easy to Bash Palin because sexism is alive & well. I never thought of myself as a guy who would become a femacrazed defender. Her candidacy has opened my eyes to women in power.
Palin Mania is not healthy for the party, but when has a politician on the Republican ticket energized the base like this? She has a bright future and is an asset to the conservative movement no matter who gets the nomination in 2012. Her support behind the nominee will be concrete and welcomed.
Remember, this is our first GOP woman on the ticket. This is something to be celebrated because she was a conservative and not a RINO in a skirt. We as a party should be proud of this yet our wonderful RINO governors are stupid enough to be petty whine about face time to CNN. If this is how the party is going to be in 2010 or 2012, get ready for more loses. Who needs Democrats when we have RINOS to fight?
portlandon on November 13, 2008 at 7:07 PM
Does ’some’ constitute more than one?
So does this ‘another’ make two or three?
Well, seeing as this is CNN and anonymous quotes, and based on the hatchet job CNN did on the GOP and Palin, I’d say this is far from representative of the inclusive GOP governors and in the very least suspect as spin.
Texas Gal on November 13, 2008 at 7:07 PM

The back-biting treachery against a popular new face is without precedent. Palin is attacked by a bunch of power-grubbing dum-dums who couldn’t care less about the Republican Party or America. If this idiot faction of Republicans prevails, they will fail again. They will fail in two years and they will fail in four years.
The snobbery and jealousy over Palin will destroy things for all of us, which is why I believe it’s worth fighting these nit-wits in the Republican power structure. It’s a darn shame the RINOsaurs have less integrity than a few honest liberals.

The Osama Obama campaign continues!
The MSM is still working hard to destroy Sarah Palin, and the nasty sniping attacks on McCain continue, too.
I see the reason as a need to provide cover for Obama’s “change” agenda, which will plunge the nation into turmoil we haven’t seen in close to 150 years.
Nothing negative I’ve seen post-election has had attribution. I say it can all be attributed to Obama and his gang of left-wing domestic terrorists. Beat your enemy into pulp, and they’ll be silent.

…how many GOP governors are there? How many were in attendance? Can anybody do the math? Or, maybe we can just damn them all as smarmy, back-stabbing bastards…except for a favorite few?
…it’s like saying “‘One of the Jewish panelists of The View thinks that the Republican panelist is a b*tch, said a Jewish panelist on the same show who requested anonymity.” So, you can figure that it’s Behar or Goldberg (?), or you can write off the whole thing — and show — as worthless, as I do….
…personally, our governor here in Texas is there, or at least his suit is…it’s been empty, attending cabinet meetings and governor’s conferences for years now….
Puritan1648 on November 13, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Its window dressing to think that this woman should be able to explain why the bailout is giving money to corporations in trouble and not to people who are in trouble? THAT is now considered window dressing for republicans? We have almost become an embarrassment. Obama is selected as the nominee for the democrats, so our candidate HAS to respond with choosing a woman. Now Obama is elected president and we are going to put Michael Steele as RNC chair. We look like a bunch of idiots, just placating all of a sudden to minorities. Its like we are trying to play catchup with the democrats, and EVERYONE will see it as that.

What you are seeing, the fear of the GOP Establishment of Sarah, is very similar to what the GOP in Alaska feared of her. Her power goes directly from the ground to your gas tank meaning she gets power directly from the people as a populist. It is fun watching them squirm.
The conservative movement may have to rebuild at least at the grassroots without the GOP for now and then link up with the GOP if they are serious about being the party of freedom.

Yes, we do. Our standards are that a VP must be able to correctly identify the amount of letters in a word. (JOBS). Another is they must know when all major inventions were first introduced into the marketplace (TV’s). And yet another is they must know all the past president’s name and the dates of service (Roosevelt). And finally, we want a VP who can speak on their own rather than plagarize.

I suppose if she had said she would run for POTUS in 2012 if a Trig’s pooh told her to run, that would somehow be more soothing to some who automatically think we are entering something akin to the Reformation if Palin lets it slip she seeks the counsel of God. Also known as a higher power to those of you who like the higher power route.
Just as many of you do not want religion forced upon you, the are millions of us that are beyond fed up being labeled ignorant or intolerant if we believe in God. If you every once in a while picked up a book that defined what Christians are about, sort of like all those books you want us to read about every belief but Christianity; I think you would find we are not gathering torches, or religious devices to force you to submit to our way of thinking.
Might I suggest a history book? See there were a ton of Christians, and folks of all religious stripes hanging out along the East Coast, and they REALLY wanted to be able to worship a tree, rock or God as they so wished, and they were tired of being told how to worship, and spend their money. Because King George thought freedom was a bad idea; they then to told Georgie Porgy to take a super leap into the Thames without a life preserver! What ever happened to the respect we once gave each other for being different? Can we not just be happy Palin believes in something or someone and is not of the opinion SHE is THE MESSIAH or THE ONE? Geeze!
Is it just me, but occasionally it seems the folks that despise Christians the most and are the most vocal against any belief in God are in reality, the least tolerant?
GOD SAVE US! Now that should really send some of you over the edge! LOL! I just type prayed for God to save ALL OF US! LOL!

Despite all the clamor in Washington, remaining on the “invite/hirable list” is THE most important thing to everyone involved in this fiasco called the GOP. As some have said, at least the Dems are honest about it. Sarah Palin is truly an outsider in that she is not interested in any of this and anyone else who is not interested will be kept out of the circle – most likely anonymously.

freeus on November 13, 2008 at 7:24 PM
Well, as long as she’s out front, there is going to be people saying something. Especially those who feel like they’ve put in a lot of time and aren’t getting the credit.
And, whenever she’s in front, right now the media is going to ask her about these questions on the campaign. Whoever called the press conference and made her the face obviously meant to do it to get the press’s attention. Otherwise, how often in the past has anyone paid attention to the Republican Governor’s association except a quick excerpt in the papers.
those who are upset should not look a gift horse in the mouth and should have used the time more constructively to add to the message about Republican governors already dealing with and doing the job that the federal government is planning to do. Put their best foot forward and all that. I think that is the main problem is that these guys don’t know how to take advantage of the free publicity that doesn’t include nasty comments about someone else. Even simple statements are going to be taken out of context and used to show “disunity”.
Desperately wanted: Republican leadership.
They keep screwing it up. And none of them have a message they can put out on the public forum. Palin kept trying to give them the “in” with “we’re a team” and they decided they were not. Uugh.

XWing5 on November 13, 2008 at 7:27 PM
…OK…I’ll jump into this gross over-simplification….
…for one thing, misrepresenting that Gov. Palin is somehow “channelling” the Supreme Being makes her not so much a politician as a prophet…there’s been too much of this “keep your God out of my face, and your chocolate out of my peanut butter” rubbish lately…including the childish doings of homosexual activists, miffed at having lost a fair election in California….
…it also reveals a lack of any frame of reference for understanding ones Christian neighbors, which I find odd…2000 years is a long time to be in business…one would think that the public would have at least a basic understanding of the product, so to speak…there are books, after all….
…furthermore, this isn’t a confusion of church with state, or anything approaching that tired old chestnut about “establishing a theocracy”…the woman is a person of faith…and uses the values that the faith teaches to make decisions…God’s will…divine providence…all that…it’s even in the founding documents, for Jefferson’s sake….
Finally, our atheist friends need a wake-up call, being as sensitive as they are to mentions, even in passing, of any power in the Universe outside themselves…the world’s a big place…there are some folks in it who would make Sarah Palin or me or Dobson or even Justice Moore look like a libertine when it comes not only to piety, but to public displays of piety…need I mention the inadvisablity of putting any Middle Eastern prophets in your editorial cartoons?
…so lighten up…the nation was created as a place where relgion was not established, but where it was also welcome…let’s not forget that, either….

Totally agree with you. I had that same feeling myself lately.

Heaven forbid a woman should steal the limelight from a bunch of (mostly) middle-aged white guys.
Go Sarah.
redfoxbluestate on November 13, 2008 at 7:28 PM
…I’d suggest changing it from Nast’s elephant to the opposum…doing what it does best…playing dead….
…(for Red Green series fans) new party motto: “quando omni flunkus moratati”….
Puritan1648 on November 13, 2008 at 7:30 PM
That’s funny, I had no idea there was a Republican Governor Anonymous.
Are we sure this isn’t just another anti-Palin piece cooked up in CNN’s fertile imagination? You can’t tell me these jerks have any credibility left.
DaMav on November 13, 2008 at 7:31 PM
And do I need to repeat that I bet those govs are given Sarah some real high-fives tonight for putting there convention in the headlines? From the dems??? I HEAR CRICKETS!!!
(Whiney little crickets at that btw.)
Chewy the Lab on November 13, 2008 at 7:32 PM
Well, that will stop as soon as Barry O does something dangerous, outrageous, stupid, etc. This is just Spring Training before regular season.
What you see here is nothing compared to the total meltdown on some leftist sites complaining about Sarah getting all the media attention.
Sapwolf on November 13, 2008 at 7:32 PM
Idiots!
Running to CNN to express their “displeasure”. How f-ing petty. Keep feeding red meat to the libtards.
I don’t agree with the Repubs that stayed home this election, but I certainly see their point.
These asses that are whining to CNN are the ones ruining the party.
What could we call a new party, by the way?
13Girl on November 13, 2008 at 7:32 PM
A couple of other articles out today on the RGA mention that there are 220 media people there (which is a huge number for the RGA). And they’re all there for the ‘Cuda. And the other governors are whining about her taking up all the media oxygen; despite the fact that she’s avoided most of the events because a media horde surrounds her every time she steps out of the elevator and that during her presser and her speech she tried to downplay her star power and focus on the group.
Quit whining you babies! Man up, get on message, and use all this media attention to move a cohesive conservative message forward. You can do that and still move your personal ambition forward too. Crap like this is part of the reason we lost.
meltenn on November 13, 2008 at 7:33 PM
Plus it’s kinda funny to see Allah, of all people, complaining about people sniping at Palin.
MayBee on November 13, 2008 at 7:33 PM
And that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that McCain was at the top of the ticket, or that there was a “financial crisis” at just the moment that McCain was gaining Palin-ispired momentum, or daily polls that showed Obama leading in some cases by 14 points. Nope, nope, it’s Sarah Palin’s fault.
ddrintn on November 13, 2008 at 7:33 PM
Her life story also makes some people look at their own life choices and feel guilty or attacked. She doesn’t set out to do this, but it happens.
IMHO It’s the only explanation for their vehement and irrational response to her.
kcewa on November 13, 2008 at 7:33 PM
I guess I meant that they are honest about 1) their hatred of anything to the right of center 2) their hatred of Palin and that she cannot come to Washington.
On the other hand the GOP welcomes Palin and then gets passive aggressive behind her back. They also will not admit they love the Washington elite-ness.
Mr_Magoo on November 13, 2008 at 7:33 PM
Did the other governors make speeches? I know that the clip showed Gov Palin but were there others before her? I will admit that I didn’t watch the whole thing but I assume that the other governors were available for questions, correct? I think it is unfortunate that the reporters probably zoned in on Gov. Palin but that is hardly surprising given the recent election. The only criticism I would make, again not knowing what the full circumstances of the press conference are, is that she should have made sure that they were included. Many of these gentlemen have had longer terms and have more experience with these conferences. If any of these gentlemen want to lead the party they should stop acting like teenage girls. If they thought Gov. Palin was out of line, they should man up and speak to her, not a reporter. That is just creating more press for her. So I guess that means they are all too stupid to lead if they can’t figure that out.
Cindy Munford on November 13, 2008 at 7:34 PM
They are just jealous, and are the RINO’s who must go.
jcheney on November 13, 2008 at 7:35 PM
CNN=Tabloid. I’m so fed up with anonymous sources. What kind of reporting is that?? It’s some reporter hiding away in a bathroom stall with a bad case of diarrhea of the mouth.
Ozark_sky on November 13, 2008 at 7:35 PM
Incredible! These guys seem to know absolutely NOTHING about public image.
Sarah Palin brought the media to the NGA meeting. The focus should have been for all the governors to maximize the media exposure with a unified conservative message.
Instead, they made the headline how cold they were to Palin. I’ve seen different versions of this story in at least 4 places already! I’ve heard nothing regarding conservative solutions to anything.
I agree with Karl Rove (see his debate with Edwards) that she needs to bone up on national policy issues. She has time to do so. What I would have liked to see today was Palin bringing the media there for an extended press conference and having other governors answer questions that related to their expertise. Present a united front with the best conservative solutions.
DON’T EVEN GIVE THE PRESS A MILLIMETER OF ANYTHING THEY COULD USE FOR A STORY LIKE THIS!!!
Political malpractice!
willamettevalley on November 13, 2008 at 7:35 PM
ALL of These Sniping “Governors” INCLUDING Mitt Romneyu and Huckabee — SHOULD BE EXECUTED FOR SEDITION
Sarah Palin IS the future of the GOP – so GET OUT OF THE WAY!!

The Parties new mascot should be the armadillo. Since every time they feel threatened the curl up into a ball keeping them unable to fight back.
