Unbelievable: GOP governors sniping at Palin over press conference

To my fellow bloggers: The next time you get an e-mail from someone saying it’s time to organize a conservative netroots, bear in mind that it’s these morons, by and large, whom that person wants you to support. The same people who couldn’t muster a judgment on the bailout independent of Nancy Pelosi being a big meanie, the same people who can’t organize a press conference without having it descend into backbiting and recriminations.

Some Republican governors tell CNN they were not particularly happy with the way the Republican Governors Association press conference was executed Thursday, saying that they agreed to go as a show of GOP governors’ unity — but they ended up feeling like silent Palin supporters, since it was clearly a press conference called for her.

The GOP governors spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity.

One called it awkward: “I’m sure you could see it on some of our faces.”

Another Republican governor eyeing a presidential run in 2012 told CNN the event was “odd” and “weird,” and said it “unfortunately sent a message that she was the de facto leader of the party.”

This isn’t about Palin, it’s about basic competence on messaging. The McCain camp couldn’t manage it and now the governors can’t either. Who’s left?

There’s a difference between believing in God and saying that you’ll run for office if he tells you to.

amerpundit on November 13, 2008 at 6:13 PM

No, there really isn’t, at least not for a Christian. Christians believe that we can talk to God and that God speaks to us as well, not necessarily in words, but speaking nonetheless.

No disrespect here at all – just realism.

Ares on November 13, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Fine. I can accept that, from you but not from barry.

I still completely disagree with you and would argue that a Christian who admits she listens to God isn’t ramming anything down anyone’s throat.

Esthier on November 13, 2008 at 6:19 PM

Perhaps I misread that, but still: even though Palin has a huge uncritical group of supporters it’s alarming how quick her colleagues have been to stab the knife in her back when given a chance. Unlike the vast majority of HotAir readers (I suspect) these people have worked with her closely over the past few months and probably have a lot more insight into what makes her tick than her grassroots fans who are going on a few prepared speeches and campaign surrogates in the media.

Big S on November 13, 2008 at 6:15 PM

Of course you do – while you’re busy pointing your fingers at those who view her favorably, you’re giving carte blanche to every negative thing said about her because it confirms your prejudices.

Never mind the fact that so much of the substance of these leaks has proven to be pure and unadulterated bullsh!t.

Sarah, if I am the last one on earth I want to say I love ya!
You speak of uniting the country in laymans terms and your foes in the media seek to attack and tear you down as they did George W. Bush.
They don’t like your pedigree your non-lawyerly answers, your non-ivy league degree and the fact that in addition to talkin the talk you walk the walk!
Keep it up girl in spite of the lefty bastards no matter what party or disguise they wear we need more Sarah’s and fewer media ass kissers, lawyers, and RINOS!
You go girl, keep speakin the truth to darkness!

Anytime a consevative even mentions God they are some snakehandling loony toon. However, our new President-Elect sat in a racist neo-commie loudmouth church for 20 years and it’s no big deal.

Interesting how that works out.

Firebird on November 13, 2008 at 6:15 PM

The Associated Press covered it in 2006 as well.

…but, you just go along with the “old boy network” of the Party…it performed great guns this election cycle, didn’t it?

Puritan1648 on November 13, 2008 at 6:16 PM

Both McCain and Palin ran as outside of that network and lost. Or am I misunderstanding you?

amerpundit on November 13, 2008 at 6:21 PM

OK I will leave it here.

Maybe the people calling me a troll won’t buy it but I am a Christian and a Republican. The former is private, the latter informs my true desire to see small government. Bush failed us on that – spending exploded. I’d like to see Republicans rein this in and to do that they need to get elected.

I don’t see Sarah as electable on a national scale. Lovely lady etc. but not a national leader, no way.

Ares on November 13, 2008 at 6:21 PM

They should be thanking Palin for making this conference relevant on any level.

V15J on November 13, 2008 at 6:21 PM

Palin is simply putting a good face on a Bad year for Republicans. She is saying “Don’t look to Washington DC for what republicans represent. Look to your Republican Governors who live the principles & make a difference with time proven, practical theories of governance”.

Washington Republicanism is dead & buried. “Look to the West” for conservative principles.

Good & Pawlenty is a great Governor. If McCain picked him, he couldn’t even have deliver his own state. I like him, but he is not a motivator that Palin is.

Jindal is great, as is Barbur. If our party can’t get over the nit picky, backbiting TMZ PerezHilton attitude crap than the GOP will be the next thing tossed on the trash heap of history.

Uh…Floridian here with a stunning report: Charlie Crist is not doing anything here in Florida so don’t hang your beads on his chain.

Rockygold on November 13, 2008 at 6:22 PM

Crist is a major RINO and he really didn’t try to help McCain because he is a goof and puckered his lips on the camera enough to try and get the No. 2 spot. I swear there is something wrong with that man.

Pawlenty. I moved to AL from MN. Pawlenty is another RINO. He can’t even get it right in MN and make an election run right.

Texas Governor. Immigration lover. Enough said.

Jindahl. I like him alot, but it’s starting from scratch with him. By the time we get done with Obama, people aren’t going to be eager to elect somebody that is spanish, indian or any other nationality. They are going back to traditional. It’s just the way it is, sorry….

These guys are all just jealous of Sarah. She kicks butt and takes names of RINO’s and they don’t like it because she calls it like it is.

Blunt from MO seems a nice guy.

Personally, I’m not willing to make that assumption based on anonymous sources. Then again, disloyalty of any type – even if it’s for the ‘best’ of reasons, is unimpressive.

I think all the focus on Palin (negative or positive) is not particularly useful at this point. The GOP needs to find a message and candidates for 2010. Any other focus is just meaningless tail-chasing.

You have point. The press conference does appear “awkward.” However, did thy have to tell it to the media?

Ares, I don’t think you are a Troll. I respectfully disagree with you on Palin. She has had 76 days on the National stage. She has grown before our very eyes. I would not have voted for her as President, but gladly as a Vice-President. She will have YEARS to get better. If we as a party cannot let the “youth” of the party grow without getting squashed by every Politico than our future is left to the Obamacons. She is not the “chosen” pick for 2012. She will have her chance, but my goodness let her have the chance without all critical shots.

Esthier on November 13, 2008 at 6:27 PM

There’s a difference between believing in God and saying that you’ll run for office if he tells you to. I don’t have a problem with the latter but there are quite a few people who do.

amerpundit on November 13, 2008 at 6:13 PM

…good…then, we’re in agreement that the folks who get all itchy, get cold chills when someone mentions the Deity, are the ones with the problem…not Gov. Palin…or me…or the other Christian bloggers here, many of whom have enough of a sense of reality and proportion to see that Gov. Palin is saying, when she mentions The Eternal, that she is a person whose faith isn’t a Sundays-only thing….

…let’s not descend into marketing so much that we lose sight of our principles…Mr. Obama was a raging lefty during the primaries, a so-called “moderate” (whatever that is) during the general election, to the point that I’d challenge anyone here to tell me what, if anything, the man actually does believe….

…athiests, who are buying bus advertising in the DC area now with a “why believe in God” theme, say that they’re interjecting “reason” and “critical thinking” into the discussion…this is not only arrogant but fallacious….

…for one thing, religion isn’t the antithesis of “reason”, except when the few define “reason” or “critical thinking” as “not believing in anything beyond your own feeble powers of discernment”.

…for another, since when have these anti-spiritual “geniuses” ever been interested in a “discussion”…they usually content themselves with muddying up any intellectual exercise they enter, behaving like spoiled children, holding forth on how open-minded they are and how backwards everyone else is, all the while ready to stomp off at the first whiff of opposition.

…want a discussion? Have respect for your opposition, expecting that they might actually have a few good ideas…otherwise, it isn’t a discussion…it’s a lecture….

…or, if you will forgive me, a sermon….

Apparently not as I’ve dared to criticize Palin. This is eerily reminiscent of when BKennedy, csdeven, myself, Allah, and others were saying that Fred couldn’t win the nomination or the presidency. An overwhelming number of HotAir heads responded by living in alternate reality where he was loved by the masses and would become the next president. Any dissent was slammed.

Let Palin alone, they can’t resist stabbing her in the back, so that riles up her base. They don’t get it, she is a conservative Republican, part of the fold, tell her to her face, not to the press.
The Republican party needs to learn to be disciplined, and learn to keep their mouth shut.

Who’s supposed to be on message? The GOP has no leadership right now. Job #1 is appointing a new head of the RNC. I suggest Newt Gingrich be forced to take the job. Maybe Fred Thompson or Michael Steele. The new head of the RNC can coordinate all this stuff and make sure bad junk doesn’t happen.

First of all, I said that:

There are non-conservative Republicans. Obviously they’re vital to the party.

I’m not saying that it was her doing that 4.1 million people didn’t turn out. In fact, it was probably McCain’s doing. But there’s a whole bunch of Republicans vital to victory that she didn’t excite into the polls.

amerpundit on November 13, 2008 at 6:38 PM

All these other governors will have their chance in the next primary. The voters can sort it all out at that time. I personally have high hopes for Sarah but we can only wait and see.

Rose on November 13, 2008 at 6:38 PM

I watched the news conference. She didn’t put herself in the position to outshine the other Govenors, the press did. She clearly said they were ALL there and available for questions. She also gave a statement that was very inclusive of all the other Governors in attendance and the importance of the elections of 2009 and 2010.

Unless she has the ability to employ some version of an Alaskan Jedi mind trick that hasn’t been leaked by yet one more anonymous source, she can’t control what the press wants to ask her, nor make the others on the stage more appealing to question.

This reminds me of some of the bickering and tattling in my elementary school classroom and on the playground.

SassyDarlin on November 13, 2008 at 6:38 PM

Stupid of republican governors to say those sorts of things.

Palin did a great job with the press conference. I think she seemed to a little annoyed that it was all about her. She kept stepping back from the mic and I think hoping they’d ask a question of someone else.

The tunnel vision a lot of posters have with respect to Palin is as damaging as anything else. We make fun of Obamaites and we are doing the same thing with Palin – almost worshiping her.

gophergirl on November 13, 2008 at 6:39 PM

Nobody, and I mean nobody, in the conservative movement have moved the people like Palin has.
Nobody had the campaign numbers at the events she had in the past 20 years.
Her events were awesome, her speeches were crazy, and the people went nuts like no one has ever seen.
So why not take that great foundation, and work with it, hone it, develop it…the liberals are scared to death of her, no other conservative worries them, but she absolutely terrifies them. They feel the draw, and I bet many are drawn to her.
She can in the next four years bring so many “feminists” in, so many dis-franchised voters. He large family and the family unit would play well in the Hispanic community.
Take that resource and develop it, don’t destroy it.
But, alas, so many egos, and so little talent…

But what the eff are you talking about? WTF is a communitarian? Are you saying a libertarian communist? ‘Cause if so we already have those and they’re called anarchists.

Editor on November 13, 2008 at 6:40 PM

It seems to be the favorite indoor sport of GOP(and Dem)political insiders and jaded media to make fun of Sarah. Could this be because she endangers the very phony political fabric they have all mastered so well? When one talks about “change” I suspect it applies more to Sarah than it ever can or will to Obama. The more I see and hear of her, the more I like her. I don’t agree with some of her policies, but I appreciate that she puts them out there squarely and honestly and allows me to decide how I feel. With Sarah you get what you see and no apologies. She is the most refreshing politician I think I’ve ever heard. Win or lose Sarah, remain true to yourself and to hell with them all.

Theworldisnotenough on November 13, 2008 at 6:41 PM

Nobody, and I mean nobody, in the conservative movement have moved the people like Palin has.

Problem is that the movement is not representative of the electorate.

Ares on November 13, 2008 at 6:41 PM

Via Jake Tapper, here is Sarah on Wolf Blitzer yesterday, when he asked her if she had any new initiatives to introduce:

“Sitting here in these chairs that I’m going to be proposing but in working with these governors who again on the front lines are forced to and it’s our privileged obligation to find solutions to the challenges facing our own states every day being held accountable, not being just one of many just casting votes or voting present every once in a while, we don’t get away with that. We have to balance budgets and we’re dealing with multibillion dollar budgets and tens of thousands of employees in our organizations.”

Come on.
I really like her, but we need- for the party’s sake- to get some of the other governors in front of the microphone.

MayBee on November 13, 2008 at 6:42 PM

Now get the left hand off of you know what and hit the books. Let the adults do the heavy lifting.

Betcha Pawlenty was the “anonymous source”. He still can’t get over being done in by a girl for the ticket.

RightTurnOnly on November 13, 2008 at 6:42 PM

She is on record saying she might run in 2012 if God tells her to.

Come on.

You’ve never heard of a Christian? You really ought to get out more.

Re: Palin, I am so sick of this poisonous atmosphere surrounding her everywhere she goes. The gossip and smears and backbiting and jealousy — I’m SICK of it. Just once I’d like the lady to go somewhere and make a speech and have everyone say, “Oh, that was a nice speech.” She just gave a talk and answered a few question and clearly tried to keep the focus where it should be, on the event and the future. I wish for ONCE everyone could just GIVE HER A STINKING BREAK!!

Gina on November 13, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Love Sarah, and replaced the Ohio state flag with the Alaska state flag in front of my house. Sarah, please stop mentioning Juan McAmnesty. Make a note to yourself ….as of let’s say December 1st, tho shall not utter the name of McLame ever again.

ohiorebel on November 13, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Funny how Sarah makes a lot of people jealous, and brings out the worst in them. From my point of view (for whatever it’s worth), human nature generally finds abiding the success of others difficult, and it takes a person of strong character to not give into the temptation to pull down their betters.

In Australia and New Zealand, there is a cultural tag against those who are perceived to be too successful: those people are called “tall poppies” (in that the tallest poppies stick out and are cut down first). Many people in this part of the world struggle with the repeated successes of American culture, business, and military influence on the rest of the world because of it.

But what amuses me more is the sniping by people like barry norris on this thread who claim in so many words that having and practicing religious faith is inversely proportional to intelligence, as such. Everything I’ve read about Atheism shows that as a philosophy, it holds one’s individual choice – free will – sacrosanct. So therefore how does one’s own free will choice to believe in, and practice, a particular religion demonstrate a lack of intelligence, so long as that choice does not impugn the choices or well being of others?

And where it comes to conservatism, I agree with many others that the Republican Party has long lost its way. Conservatism at its root believes that the Federal government should only exist to do the following:

* Uphold the law across states where necessary;
* Provide for the common defense; and
* Defend US interests to the rest of the world.

That’s IT.

Everything else belongs either in the private sector, or in the government closest to the people (e.g., public education administered at the local school board level).

With the exception of Amnesty (which I hope she took only to pacify Open Borders John), Sarah Palin holds to those conservative principles. She practices what she preaches, and she has high moral standards.

I will support her and those like her. RINOs, as the Nuge said yesterday, can all go to Hell. The “big tent” is DOA.

/rant off

Wanderlust on November 13, 2008 at 6:43 PM

The GOP governors conference would not even be news without Palin there.

BINGO!! Did you remember the last one?

I believe Tammy Bruce when she says Christ’s personal life won’t be able to stand up to national scrutiny.

Rightwaywin on November 13, 2008 at 6:43 PM

@#$%!

CP on November 13, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Funny how people call Palin dumb but some seem to have reading comprehension issues. Her comment supposedly about running in 2012 was:

“I’m like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I’m like, don’t let me miss the open door,” Palin said in an interview with Fox News.

“And if there is an open door in ‘12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I’ll plow through that door.”

That doesn’t say SHE GOING TO RUN for Pres- it says if something works out that it’s a possibility, if it’s good for her family, her state, etc she would take the opportunity. She could be talking about a run for the Senate, a run for something else.

Sheesh what do you expect a politician to say? No I’ll never consider running for anything

I remember some crap from 2006 but not ‘07. And guaranteed that 99% of Americans won’t remember this one a month from now, either.

amerpundit on November 13, 2008 at 6:45 PM

Sexism pure and simple. These guys would at least defer to the last VP candidate if he were male. The continual angling for personal attention is petty and destructive to the party. She spoke of shared values and visions. Would this meeting get any real attention without her? Some of these guys need to grow a pair…and stop the damn whisper campaign.

Buckeye Babe on November 13, 2008 at 6:45 PM

They suck, big time.

John Boehner is going to lead us out of this mess?

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE JOKING.

benrand on November 13, 2008 at 6:46 PM

Who is there who will ignite the rest of the party? What moderate will draw the crowds and create the kind of enthusiasm that Sarah did? People can say that the base needs the moderates to win but I don’t see how the moderates can even come close without the enthusiasm of the base.

Rose on November 13, 2008 at 6:46 PM

Buckeye Babe,

Never attribute to mallice what you can attribute to stupidity.

Why are these people RINO’s if they don’t agree with her as the leader of the party? They may have a point.

The tunnel vision a lot of posters have with respect to Palin is as damaging as anything else. We make fun of Obamaites and we are doing the same thing with Palin – almost worshiping her.

gophergirl on November 13, 2008 at 6:39 PM

It’s the anonymous rumoring that’s bad , nothing wrong with criticizing Palin.

Considering many have their own presidential ambitions and putting that VP out of the spotlight would help them, I doubt it’d be much different.

Please.

amerpundit on November 13, 2008 at 6:28 PM

…shake it off…it’s only virtual….

…frankly, all this talk of “Palin in 2012″ a tad premature…if she’s revelling in it, if she’s encouraging it, she needs to go back to Alaska and do the job she was elected to do…not having been elected to do anything else, that is….

…if she’s not, and it’s another case of either the MSM needing content for a 24-hour news cycle — which, with Obama spitting out potential constitutional outrage almost hourly, shouldn’t be an issue — or the MSM and their Democratic totalitarian friends trying to further widen cracks in a wounded party, let’s not rise to the bait….

…the last election cycle was what, 24 or so months long? Now, is the next one to be 48 months long? Is the MSM going to gin-up Sarah Palin to be the “inevitable candidate” a’ la Hillary Clinton…so’s they can see her knocked down in ‘12, again a’ la Hillary?

…let’s do something new for a change: let’s actually be conservative. By that, I don’t mean “let’s be fiscally responsible”, or “let’s advocate limited government and a strong defense”…no, let’s be wary, and not jump on every bandwagon that rolls through town….

…want to rebuild the party? Well…going to the base and not b*tch-slapping ‘em as was done by Mr. McCain and his enablers, with the ready help of the country-club, old-boy and ideological-purity sets. Remember what we’re supposed to stand for. If that means being “everything to every man”…well…I’d advocate giving that a miss….

…apropos to the discussion of religion/atheism (into which I plunged with both muddy feet), I think that it was Chesterton who said that the problem with atheism isn’t that you believe in nothing, but that you’ll believe in anything….

…so, think of that in a social and political context: if you don’t have a firm grip on what you believe and why you believe it, you’re not riding into battle in shining armor, armed with Excalibur, and mounted on a great grey steed. You’re riding into the next electoral battle — which I can promise the Democrats, now drunk on their own achievement, will treat as a fight to the death — clad in cardboard, armed with a feather, and mounted on a greased pig….

…and, amerpundit, I hope that didn’t take it too personally…I earlier replied to one of your posts because your post encapsulated, in the shortest, most direct terms, what I wanted to reply to….

…sort of used you as a straight man…not very polite, I suppose…such is the blogosphere…such is life….

Not quite accurate. She represents a significant percentage of the electorate but not quite a simple majority . . . she needs to keep working on it. As for her dingbat colleagues; they need to grow up, stop pouting and get into the fray.

Really, is that the only thought you have ever had? Is that all you know is that one sentence (a partial one at that)? Is that the only thing you know how to post? We have got to get new posters on this site. I mean I really like you, but that is that all you said, you can’t even complete the sentence?
See how that works…
You are no better the Ares when he stated God told Palin to run for office, when the whole statement she made was completely different.

right2bright on November 13, 2008 at 6:47 PM

“I think that this group is going to be looked to and looked at for leadership that perhaps had been lacking in Congress and in Washington, D.C.,” she said. “This group is going to be uniquely qualified to provide leadership in this nation.”

Palin at Governors conference! Keep speakin truth to darkeness Sarah. Washington is the problem. It created the current crisis. Free market capitalism without congressional meddling is the solution.

The nation will be real sick and tired of D.C. in two years.
How’s that 700 billion dollar taxpayer blank check to the Treasury Sec. with no oversight workin out so far.

All McCain had to do to win is say hell no, no taxpayer bailout of D.C. created messes and name names. he didn’t Sarah will. You go girl!

Dirthead on November 13, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Hey, I shook the man’s hand and looked right in his eyes. He ain’t the ONE for the GOP. He is more likely to pay lip service to the base and then cross over the middle. Also, there were rumors he is gay or at least bi. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it was true. I can usually spot this stuff. I have an uncle who is gay and another one who died of AIDS. Coming from an admitted homophobe (don’t hate them, just gives we the willies), he may not be the one. Let’s keep looking.

Sapwolf on November 13, 2008 at 6:48 PM

The old school Republican era is out. Why don’t they get it?
Palin brings fresh ideas. Yep they are eating their own.

johnnyU on November 13, 2008 at 6:48 PM

I may change parties just to screw the Dems up anyway by changing to their party and dismantle them like they did the Repubs.

johnnyU on November 13, 2008 at 6:49 PM

I also question whether we really want as a Presidential candidate someone who would trash a fellow governor who was just the party candidate for VP via a cowardly anonymous leak to CNN.

If there was actually a leak, they are going to be perceived as jealous petty boys who are upset that she is getting attention. What is she supposed to do – she got vilified when she didn’t talk to the press and now people are criticizing her because she does. Should she have not attended the convention so she wouldn’t draw attention from them? Can anyone tell me how much press attention this convention got the last time it was held?

katiejane on November 13, 2008 at 6:49 PM

You have a point, Ares. However, let’s not go too far the other way and forget that freedom OF religion is not the same as freedom FROM religion, as some of the loony left would have us believe. This country was founded with the basic idea that our inalienable rights come from our CREATOR. The foundation of faith is very much a part of the system that relies on private property rights and individual responsibilty, charity towards others of your own free will.

Telling people not to mention their faith at all is a little sensitive among Christians, particularly politically active Republicans. Reminds them of ancient Rome when Christians had to worship in the catacombs under the streets in the darkness. There is also the issue of the first amendment, free speech and all. I’m not a religious guy myself, but I don’t like to see people of faith told they are offensive just for saying they prayed over something or mentioning God in a sentence. It is something that gets ugly on both sides real quick.

Sarah is not ramming faith down anyone’s throat, she’s just honestly speaking about what moves her heart. I appreciate that. Sarah has not governed Alaska as a bible thumping crusader. She has declined to back some of the anti-gay measures and anti-abortion measures that were put on her desk the past couple of years. This image has been created by a rabidly anti-religious press that tars and feathers anyone who dares to mention faith in a positive way.

Sarah Palin is very libertarian on alot of issues for governance, but her personal opinion on those issues for her own family are more religious conservative, if you look at her actual record in office, instead of what David Schuster says she stands for.

Not yet..and you might possibly be right in the long run..maybe.

The fact remains she has only had less than 12 weeks on the public national stage and most of that she was constrained by badly managed handlers and people that were not operating in her best interest.

I want to see what she can do without such constraints and using her own judgement. She has shown so far a natural ability to navigate the sharks and the intuition to handle herself with style and grace.

Show me one politician (or for that matter anyone in here) that has never mis-spoken..some more often than others.

Time will tell. She will learn the things she needs to know very quickly..she will make it her business to know and adapt. The one thing that all these anonymous leakers/tattlers better realize is..like her or not, she is a force to be reckoned with and you better do it carefully.
