The Democratic attack on the youth vote

Rahm Emanuel’s remarks about the civilian defense corps shows a blindness to a potential political cliff that fellow community organizers are about to lead Democrats over like lemmings. The danger here isn’t that the Obama administration is about to launch a 21st century Land Service program, but that a civilan draft will damage the volunteer military. And a relaunch of any kind of draft may hit the Hope-and-Changers right where they live: in the youth vote.
Let’s deal with the draft itself. What Emanuel proposes is what the nation had for over 30 years, a draft supported by both Republican and Democratic presidents. Like Emanuel’s proposal, draftees had to live in barracks and wear uniforms — but they had to do it for two years. Eventually, the draft got so unpopular that it had to go. When the voting age was lowered to 18, the writing was on the wall.
Unlike the draft, however, this time everyone will apparently serve — which will make it even less popular than the draft. Those who would volunteer to serve their country now would join the military anyway, but three months in a “civilian defense force” might blunt that desire, especially if it’s as pointless as Barack Obama’s description of it. The cost of it will be enormous, and it will end up competing for work that could be done by private-sector efforts that would actually employ younger workers rather than have them work as slaves to the government. If the term is only three months, then most of that time would go into training, leaving little time for productivity.
And how will the nation’s youth react to forced labor camps, which is exactly what Emanuel proposes? Community organizers might think of this as heaven, but the rest of the young adults between 18-25 will resent the hell out of it. After turning out the youth vote in 2008, they may find that 18-25-year-olds will discover their inner libertarians and vote out the Democrats who sold them into indentured servitude against their will.
The draft at least served real security interests of the US over its 30+ years of existence, and it wound up so unpopular that Democrats and Republicans use it to make voters nervous about the plans of the other. I doubt it would take 30 weeks for its return to reach the same depths of resentment among its targets.

I’d like to see Bill Clinton appointed draft czar.

I thought Bush wanted the draft.
If this takes place in the next 4 years my son would be forced to do this program. I have raised him as a conservite and there is no way that I would demand him to do this. I will have his back. At 16 he is already telling his friends why the one is not good for this country. I’ll have to have him read up on this. He has plans, he wants to go to college and one day open up his on line of restaurants. He knows how to get there hard work. Not this kind of Bull $#@#
Brat4life on November 13, 2008 at 8:08 AM
Let’s say they go ahead with this idea. Would it apply only to US citizens who live in the US? All US residents? Would it cause young Americans to flee elsewhere? Would it go the way of Obama’s agenda on change.gov?

The People will absolutely refuse to go along with this.

Emanuel’s idea is probably not so bad IF it is not compulsory. Made compulsory, it essentially removes any altruism or learning or demonstrating about same from the equation. For such a smart man, I wonder that he has not figured out this basic flaw in his thinking.
jeanie on November 13, 2008 at 8:08 AM
My daughter’s friends all voted for Obama because he is such a “good speaker”. They all argued with her and called her names for supporting Mccain/Palin.
So I told her last night to make sure she told them all about this compulsory civil defense training…3 months in a uniform, living in barracks, even if you have kids or are in college.
Well, she did…and they had no clue he wanted to implement this. haha Man..they are NOT happy now!

Something like this was first introduced by Chuck Rangel (D-NY) back in January 2007. It is still sitting out there. Known has H.R. 393.
Maybe they have been waiting till now to bring it up for a vote since The One will be in office and this is somewhat what he is looking for.

Is the MSM ever going to ask a question to Barack Hussein about this?
Debbie Schlussel is posting about a possible failure of BHO to register for the Selective Service. If true that would make Obama’s plan all the more easy to attack.
If BHO didn’t even register for the selective service who is he to require civil service of everyone else?

I’m afraid that the youts of America are going to be sing-songed into believing in this. Esp the inner city kids (see the video of the younguns in the pseudo military garb praising The One).
bikermailman on November 13, 2008 at 8:16 AM
Let’s also not ignore the fact that this is very much an effort in social engineering, and not one intended to serve any real higher purpose. Emanuel’s own words were that this would participants a “common experience” of what it means to be American.
If that’s what it’s about, how much of this would be practical training, and how much of it would be political indoctrination?
flipflop on November 13, 2008 at 8:16 AM
Oh, and I strongly suggest a massive mail-in campaign should this pig of an idea ever get floated after Obama gets sworn in.

This may be true for inner city kids, but my daughter’s friends are all kids who are in college and who have always had everything handed to them. They are self-centered and do not want to server their country for free. gasp!
My 21 yr-old has had to work for what she wanted and thank God she knows that Obama is evil. She is soo against abortion..not like her friends.

Why don’t we go all the way and make them carry little red books and wear brown shirts. The fact we are even talking about the idea of compulsive “volunteer” service speaks volumes about the Orwellian death spiral we are in. You would think with our embrace of central planning 101 in our financial markets that it would be warning enough.
We have gone around the bend. F’k it, lets bring Chavez here so we do it right! Ayers has his phone number if we need it.

rbj on November 13, 2008 at 8:22 AM
Ed,
Not sure how old you are, but I think you may be off the mark here. I ask about the age issues because a lot, and I mean a lot has changed since you went to school. Used to be you went to school to learn about, you know, reading, writing, math, history.
These days you go to school to learn about saving the environment and oppression of victim groups (anyone but white males pretty much). And throughout 12 years of school and there is the undertone that it is your duty to ‘give back’ to the community. And if there is time left over maybe you get to learning about 2+2=4. Or 5, if you’re doing new math.
It is only natural then that once you hit 18, ‘giving back’ is the natural thing to do. And today’s 18 year olds will look at this program as a positive thing. Kids today will make wonderful Obama Youth. Just cloak it in terms of ‘community’, ‘giving back’, and ‘outreach’ and you will get them to do anything, and do it for free.

ED,
You missed a very important point that get’s left out in this debate: At least with the draft, you got paid. You were entitled to all the benefits and obligations of military service. You still had rights.
Under Obama’s plan, you HAVE to serve and that without any renumeration. In fact, he intends to hold college financing hostage until you participate. I wouldn’t put it past him and his administartion to force colleges to only accept those who have completed their “volunteer” service, or to even withhold graduation, etc.
There is a world of difference between the compulsort military service we once had , and what some nations still have, and what the incoming administration is planning.

This is code for reeducation camps… if this is proposed as something “for our own good” (like the ban on trans-fats, etc.) I think the glazed- eyes pod people will show little resistance.
If they continue with the somewhat transparent description, however, it may not be pretty…

This is perfect for those collecting welfare, make them earn their gifts from taxpayers. My daughter will not be forced off into any training program. I am in the process of prepping myself tonight with a meeting with one of her teachers and her so called retraining program with her students which she enforced yesterday. I already informed the school as a capitalist I will not tolerate any marxist retraining by an educator and if she needs retraining I will be the one who will enforce it.
I am so looking forward to tonights meeting.
Let Emanual and Barry try to enforce this, we as Americans have a voice and we better find it and NOW

Tommy_G on November 13, 2008 at 8:26 AM
After college, I spent two years working in a special high school program for “explusion cases” in an inner city school system. It was designed to assist gang members in getting thier high school diplomas, and was promoted as a savior for these kids and the city. After two years of working on it, it soon became clear to me that the program was a joke. None of the “gang members” went to class more than once or twice a month. But they still got their diplomas based on made up grades. Every month or so, we would put on a dog and pony show for the school board where we would bribe the students to come in on that day with food. This program is one of the reasons I became a Republican. If Obama wants to educate young people about how wasteful and inefficient the government is, he will enact this program.

Odd as it may sound, I would not be surprised if a narrow majority of the “youth” vote approves of Obama’s nutty manadatory public service idea.
Remember, the “youths” have been so brainwashed and dumbed down by our public school system that most have lost all ability to think critically. Very few of them value rugged individualism. Most of them have been steeped in the appreciation of collectivism.
And do you think the media will allow the youth to “revolt” against the Obamessiah?” Not a chance.
The media has too much “invested” in Obama. He will be protected to the max no matter how stupid his ideas seem.

Israel has a military draft, with civil service for specific groups who will not do army duty. It’s interesting that Emanuel’s rhetoric sounds very Israeli. He will ‘forge a nation’, he will ‘give people a shared background’. Why do Americans need that? Are they a people who are trying to build themselves or a nation? Why do Americans need to ’strive’ to be Americans?

If this wasn’t so frightening, it would be utterly hilarious! How out of touch with the average 18 year old can one party be?! I guess they were overwhelmed with the cultish devotion of a few college Obamatrons. If the Dem’s started with kids born today and indoctrinated they and their parents into thinking this was a good idea, then “maybe”. Maybe. But to think the average 18 year old who’s been raised in our “me first” society, is going to willingly go to his concentration camp, he’s dreaming!
I do love that they’ve managed to totally over-reach before even taking the oath.

BHO wants to offset $4,000 of college tuition costs in exchange for 100 hours of community service.
That is $40 an hour.
You can hire some pretty experienced labor for $40 an hour.
You don’t need to pay a college kid to go through 10 hours of sexual harrassment training, 10 hours of inprocessing, 10 hours of orientation, 20 hours of getting his or her feet wet, 40 hours of actual work (in exchange for the $4,000, which makes the actual pay-for-work $100 an hour), and 10 hours of outprocessing.

mmmmmmmmm, buttery.
So here’s the thing on the banning of transfats, etc. Let me say up front, I’m not for Big Brother determining your diet- BUT, (beware the underlying truth) Something has to be done about America’s eating habits if ONLY to do something in regard to health care costs. Our eating habits have led to a plethora of diseases that are bleeding the health care industry dry- it’s very much a big ugly circle. The drug industry is making a fortune off the obese and diabetic, and if Barry has his immediate way, we’re all going to pay through the nose for it. If you extrapolate a fat youth into a drug dependent, wheel chair bound, therapy seeking, health care junkie adult, it’s disgusting. If you’ve ever had to wait in an emergency room with a kid with a broken arm, while hugely overweight adults are being treating for chronic “breathing problems” (their heart is being suffocated by their own fat) it kind of pisses you off!
It will be interesting to see how Barry treats his supporters on this one; Health care is, (in my opinion) a two way street. How much leeway will he give people who are draining the system via their own “free will” of living the way they want?
Sorry if this came off as a lecture, but as you can tell, it’s a big peeve of mine.

Compulsory service for everyone. Is that what the Founders shed their blood for?
Of course, they’re couching it as “civil defence” training. They’ll say that they’re preparing to respond to the next Katrina. But since it’s national, that means folks in Kansas will be trained to deal with tsunamis, and folks in Seattle will learn how to deal with drought.
Building a shared experience. So all can worship the Big O, or really, the State.

And the GDP goes down another xx%

Well..her friends all voted for Obama because they hated Sarah Palin. She is against abortion…Rachael’s friends are for it. None of them follow politics and they only wanted to hear that Obama was going to help the poor.
Lucky for me..my daughter grew up with me and I follow politics and I express my opinion to her. She is registered as an independent because she doesnt agree with all the Republicans opinions.
hmm..does that mean I indoctrinated my daughter? lol

What most Americans believe Obama promised: continue your lives normally, except with free health insurance, less war, less taxes, and no more George W. Bush.
What Obama actually promised: we will cut the military, betray our alliances, increase taxes on the rich, inflate the national debt, enact strict gun control, force the youth to buy health insurance they don’t need and volunteer much of their time in a non-paying job, and we’ll send a former US President to jail for defending the national interest.
This should go well.

My Friends (oops, sorry…channeling McCain for a second).
What we have been witnessing is the death of personal responsibility. Why take care of yourself and your problems when the government will do it for you?
Barry and Rahm are going to dangle the carrot of college money in front of the youths’ faces, thereby freeing them from the responsibility of providing for their own education.
And why should we take care of ourselves when the government is going to watch what we eat and provide goverment-sponsored health care?
Gang, we can not allow people to hop on this train. We have to speak out to our family, friends, and Congressmen.
Viva La Resistance!

But since it’s national, that means folks in Kansas will be trained to deal with tsunamis, and folks in Seattle will learn how to deal with drought.
o.k., i’ll sign my 16 year old son to do the tsunami training.

Maybe they could hold hands and walk the border from California to Texas. When you get to Brownsville you are released from service
