Do I really believe he said it? YES. It’s on video.
Do I really believe something like that can be done? Why not? It has been done elsewhere and they didn’t believe it could happen there either.
Do I think he could get away with it? Not sure. I wouldn’t have believed if someone had told me in 1985 that the Soviet Union was going to just announce one day that they were done and giving up the Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact and calling it a day. What a joke! Except it happened.
Do I think he meant what he said, rather than a WORM (What Obama Really Meant) explanation? His extremist radical ties with the weatherman underground who were talking about killing 25 million Americans kinda give me pause. Then there is Rahm Emmanuel talking about the exact same thing mentioning boot camp and Rahm Emmanuel has been appointed his chief of staff.
You tell me?

I think it was Palin coming out against ever increasing bailouts that gave GOP senators the balls to stand up agains tit. bush coming out after Palin helps too. I think until jan 21st the federal purse is closed. If the GOP were smart it would not vote for another bailout from now until 2010. vote for things that help the people impacted, increas in heating funds, food stamps for recent laid off workers, increased in WIc funded. Become the party of the people not the party of the CEO’s. The CEO’s made their choice with Obama. they wanted to back the winner. So be it. Make the dems defend their CEO fat cats now.

Fact Check needs to re-read Obama’s words. His discussion of the Peace Corps and a civilian security security force were exclusive of one another. If anyone has followed anything Obama has said in the past, they will quickly realize that he is very precise in his wording.
Obama calls for increasing AmeriCorps to 250,000. A noble gesture, for sure. But one that has nothing to do with his comment on the civilian security force. In addition:
-Rahm Emanuel’s comments clearly put any notion of an expanded Peace Corps to rest. A 3 month basic training. For ALL young men and women.
-Obama’s mention of a civilian security force was not restricted to the one comment Fact Check zeroed in on. Obama has mentioned it at other times, outside of the context of a Peace Corps.
-The US military curently has over 1 million members in uniform. His goals for Ameri Corps was a total compliment of 250,000. That is nowhere “just as strong” as the military.
-Our defense budget in enormous. Just what in the hell is the Peace Corps going to do with an amount equal to the billions of dollars we spend on aircraft or ships? Or the payroll for over 1 million?
Fact Check needs to check what they’re smoking (or perhaps AP can tell us, since it appears that they are sharing their stash with AP).
Jim M. on November 13, 2008 at 11:51 PM
Actually, the one audio clip I heard had emanuel saying that he would be ok if they wanted to add an additional 4 months (for a total of seven)..
going back to Allah’s original quote
DANG STRAIGHT it does.. Yep, it sounds eeirly like the Hitler youth, red guard, little octobrists, young pioneers, The cuban “Separate them from their parents” system..
It does NOT sound like the boy scouts, civil air patrol or coast guard auxilairay.
The administration isn’t even in freaking office and they are already starting to grate on me with their orwellian doublespeak.
I think it is a legitimate fear, based on historical facts, that this ‘civilian volunteer group’ could easily lead to
“Hello Ve are here from der civilain volunteeer group. You are invited to come mit us fur eine special schower..”
WE DO NOT NEED SUCH A GROUP… Ask yourself why the administration is pushing this…

I’m seeing some signs of that. I think Paulson changing the terms of the bailout upset people. They tides have turned on the bailouts. 70-805 were against the $700b bailout. Now with Paulson’s checkmate on the banks that number probalby went to 90%. I think people are starting to see the beggers lining up at the taxpayer mill and understand there is not enough bread to feed them all. It is time to protect what we have. Let the companies that made bad choices fail. Out of the destruction new companies will form.

As the ODS turns. In last week’s episode President Obama was a Manchurian candidate getting ready to institute Sharia across the land and cede our borders to our enemies. The plot thickens this week as he reveals his dastardly plans to have civilians helping out the poor and elderly and to beef up the state department. Wingnut Broadcasting reports that the real plan is to arm the civilian force, off the elderly to cut the social security burden, and enslave those who don’t know how to make the special O sign.
Don’t miss next week when a mysterious picture with the Hawaiian birth certificate appears to have the number 666 displayed in the center of the letter O….

It will come as regulation, taxation, and rationing. By rationing I mean more then commodities. It will be about ‘correct’ people doing ‘correct’ things. If you aren’t a ‘correct’ citizen your access to the wonders of freedom will be restricted. To accomplish that we will all be inspected. Business owners will require ‘community service’ references. City governments ‘community service’ verification. State and Federal government ‘community service’ tax breaks, or penalties if you don’t roll up your sleeves for a better America. Charity will come to you wearing a jackboot.

It is not one dang speech. Obama said the same thing at Columbia fourm. Talked about ROTC and civilian service. His change.gov website had talk of middle school and highscool kids being required to have 50 hours of community service, college kids 100hr. His books talk about a need to give back to the country. His wife talked about it on the campaign trail. It has been a major theme through out his campaign.

Think it through would you?
It is likely that the college angle will be a stipulation to qualify for federal student aid. High school age will be an “encouragement” to add that as part of the curriculum.
It may also be possible that welfare recipients might be required to “give back”. If he had said that in his campaign he would be accused of being a conservative in democrat’s clothes.
Bradky on November 14, 2008 at 12:03 AM
“Taken out of context”….yeah sure, the last resort for when someone has no justifiable explanation for something said.
That nonsense resembles nothing more than a bunch of talking points all glued together into paragraphs and is so fractured that even within its so-called context it stills sounds the same way as when the critical words stand alone. There is absolutely nothing in the surrounding text to suggest the idea has merit or that it can be understood to mean something more reasonable.
With or without that ridiculous article,
We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set.
We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.
still sounds like
We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set.
We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.
And then:
He was talking specifically about expanding AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps and the USA Freedom Corps.
Really? “Specifically”?
Since when does the Peace Corps aim to provide national security? If you want to talk about the Peace Corps for what it is supposed to do, Obama, then say that. Don’t evade questions and try to pass off a rat for a hamster, and then tell us we are misinterpreting “context.” And if you are so interested in national security, I would like to hear an explanation of why we can’t strengthen what we already have, and why you feel the need to reduce military spending.
Obama, I think it’s going to be a long four years for you.
fireweednectar on November 14, 2008 at 12:04 AM
I don’t know whether he can deliver on it, but his selection of Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff indicates he may very well intend to try.
What is the criteria now, by the way, for taking a president at his word? Does he have to say something in more than “ONE dang speech”? How many more times would he have to say it for you to take him seriously? He floated this idea on his change.gov site, too, you know – and he changed the wording quite significantly when people started talking about it.

They are now extremely left-of-center. My oldest was in GS in grade school, and after seeing a camp counselor here in MN using the camp name “Sappho” that put the end of GS for us.
Which is a terrific shame, since I was in GS for 10 years, and gained so much from it. The GS now is nothing like it was in the 70′s. The militant lesbian/left wing nutjob element runs the organization now. And they wonder why they’re having difficulty attracting new members; GSUSA have begun consolidating their nation-wide counsels from over 300 to around 100. In Ohio, where I was a Scout, there is now only two councils – one for the northern half of the state and one for the southern. Why should a 14-year old girl join Scouts when there are so many other choices for her?
Blue-eyed Infidel on November 14, 2008 at 12:06 AM
As a conservative I don’t want welfare recipients to be required to ‘give back’ anything. If they frakking deserve welfare then they deserve welfare. Not the play-the-game dole takers, the truly needy.

To understand Obama and what is coming one must only take his view on “price” He has stated time after time in every police that he believes you change behavior by price control. what to conserve electricty usage and reduce it by 15% increase the cost of electricity. what to reduce gasoline consupmtion get gas to $4.00/gal slowly. what to promote community service make it costly to not do it. no degree, no finacial aid.
Obama’s policy amounts to economic corecion of the state to mold individual behavior. If he believes in economic corecion it is not a big step to believe in physical corecion of the state. It is the mindset that the state must get the individual to follow a certain plan.
Get it yet?

So, in effect, nothing at all that Obama said during the campaign is to be taken as “true”, or even as indications of his overall outlook. It may actually be that he’s going to cut taxes across the board; he’s actually going to take a pretty firm attitude toward Putin and Ahmedinejad. Hell, he may even be for school vouchers or some such lunacy.

It doesn’t. It has to do with positive rights vs negative rights. It has to do with empowering government to legislate what you CAN do instead of what the State CANNOT DO.

Overraction? Ok…first time I heard taking someones REPEATED words at face vaule is overreaction. Obama’s energy policy states he wants to change the prift motive for electric companies. He wants to make electricty costs skyrocket, he wants to bankrupt the coal industry. He wants a CDF, he wants to reuire citizens to give back, he wants to stop off shore oil drilling, he wants to stop oil shale production and bnot buy the oil shale coming from Canada, he wants to rework NAFTA, he is ok with $4.00/gal gas. he does not consider Iran a threat.
His economic policy is based on price controls. He wants to control price to control the usage of things. Most people use taxes in this regard. He wants to set the price himself.
Overreaction? I’m just repeating what Obama has said. The arrogance you think you see is simply disbelief that people like you want to believe Obama means something other than what he has said.

The Age of Obama as a failed socialist experiment with dashed hopes for impoverished masses? Probably a result not much different than expected in large developing nations:

Considering the seemingly endless depth to Congressional corruption? Possible, as long as enough wheels were given enough grease.

Remember how Bush and the Conservatives were going to privatize social security, cut spending and the like. those were promises yet even with a majority it didn’t happen.
No difference.
Bradky on November 14, 2008 at 12:28 AM
bush did not have a digtial army of 3-4million that can be mobilized as simply as sending an email alert. He didn’t have a warchest that can and will run against incumbants in their own primaries if they don’t paly ball. the dems are not the reps. We do not have the filbuster like the dems had during the social security debate or the amnesty debate.

The leftists did march in lockstep under Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Mussolini, Pol Pot, and Kim Jong-il. The leftists have also started to do the same under the creepy cult like behaviour displayed towards Obama.

the entire sum of the “nah Bambi wasn’t serious” ‘argument’ seems to be….come on the idiot has no idea what he’s saying…..
oh ok…except…..
he just picked a guy for his hatchet man who deeply believes in Kibbutz Kidz as a model…..
“just coincidence”….
oh ok…..
and the rehabilitation of William “why yes I do know how to do an IRA impersonation” Ayers as a credible force and Billy shocker ALSO believes in indoctrinating youth “volunteerism”.
I grew up poor and even back in the late seventies the college whackjob guidance counselors they’d send to the projects were pushing the prototype “social justice” junk.
Mandatory voluntary will not get my child.

Not a matter of “better than that”, as one should always use the proper tool for the proper job – never use a sledge hammer when a fly swatter will do.

Perhaps I am more confident than you are that the country will survive an Obama presidency and in 2012 there won’t be reeducation camps, armed civilian pc police, and government price controls on every commodity.
There is being concerned and there is being scared of every word someone utters. the latter is no way to live.

They’ll be trained to work in the government owned factories of the nationalized automobile industry or as health care bureaucrats in the nationalized health care industry or as tree farmers in the nationalized
global warmingenergy industry. Can everyone say “the collectivization of labor and government ownership of the means of production”.
Maybe the LAWYER and LAW SCHOOL BLOGGERS might want to rethink their “let’s be moderate and loyal in our opposition”.

Racist!
Murphy9 on November 14, 2008 at 12:31 AM
I have learned to embrace my inner racist. I kind of like it. I do not suffer from white guilt. I am glad my ancestors destroyed the indians instead of Europe. I’m happy that my ancestors destroyed slavery. I am glad that America was born by white chirstians. Africa and Latino countries are not doing so well. To those that think the white man stoled what he has. screw you. We earned everything we have thru blood sweat and tears.

No, but their labor pool was raised to rebel while taking out the trash.
Some will be well trained and have the grit to do what they are told, but they will need to be spread out to provide a core to an untried, untested, and unmotivated cadre, and one who has no concept of community, only self.

If anything this may well be what destroys them in the end though. Empire building within the bureacracy gets insane in command economies….
HUD will want its own Commandos…..
funny stuff.

Considering Obama got a good portion of the under 30 vote I suppose you must believe in reincarnation. From the streets of Berlin to Grant Park….
Sheesh

THOSE PEOPLE WHO PAID $20,000 FOR OBAMA INAUGURATION TIX ON EBAY ARE GOING TO BE SOOO PISSED!</strong>
NightmareOnKStreet on November 14, 2008 at 12:44 AM
the media’s already trying to sell people on the idea that they want to “wait for tax cuts” while also laying the groundwork for “The REALLY New Deal”…..
wait and see has its place….
Bambi trying to codify the Bambi Youth so my child has to sing “Obama’s Gonna Change It!” or “American Prayer” ain’t the place for “wait and see”.

If he doesn’t intend to deliver on it, why did he say it? Who was he trying to appeal to?
Jim Treacher on November 14, 2008 at 12:45 AM
I understand what you are saying and largely agree. The thing is though, is that the leftists have no overt religion. They often look towards human agents and elevate them to demi-god status. Hitler, Lenin, Stalin are examples of these sorts of cults. If you see them as religious fanatics you can understand why previously unmotivated individuals can rapidly become something else.
