If it is to be funded as well as the military, does that mean that the military has to be cut or we have to spend 600 billion on the Peace Corps/Americorps/boondogle for Obamabots?

That’s a whole lot of numbers and dollars for just putting flowers in the ends of guns, so yes, I would say there is a there there.

Tell you what, if Omarxa says that one out of four volunteers would be sent to Haiti, Sudan, Liberia or Palestine to work, then I would accept the plan.
I’d like to see how many people would actually join if they knew they had a 25% chance of being sent to work in some hellhole rather than planting flowers in Belgium or ‘spreading goodwill’ in Paris.
Self-described “caring liberalism” would dry up faster than a puddle in the Sahara.

FWIW, I did send the eyeblast link over to FactCheck.org with a little note that given Rahm Emanuel’s expected position in the next administration and the comments made on the audio, the factcheck article presents an incomplete picture. I doubt it will go anywhere, but if everyone sent the same comments to factcheck.org, perhaps we’d see an update at some point. I wouldn’t put money on it, but eh, consider it my small contribution to “hope and change”.

Congress can define slavery and indentured servitude all it wants. The Courts will have the final say and as of now I don’t thing they will agree with BHO or Congress. I can see a consitutional crisis coming between the SCOTUS and POTUS and Congress. With Congress and the President having total control It will be the SCOTUS that applies the breaks. I don’t think Roberts, Alito, Scalia are going to chuck the consituiton in a moment of bipartisian obama worship.

I happen to think you’re right about a domestic defense force in the way a lot of people are talking about it. But this thing just dovetails too nicely with Rahm Emanuel’s words about a “civil defense force” (his words) made up Obama’s core voting bloc of 18-25 year olds.

1. Why use the term ‘Civilian’ when talking about something like the Peace Corp?
2. Why use the term ‘Security’ when talking about something like the Peace Corp?
3. Why even bring up the military?
4. Why say it should be just as ‘powerful’ as the military. What the heck does that mean in the context of a Peace Corp?
sharrukin on November 13, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Q: Is Obama planning a Gestapo-like “Civilian National
Secruity force”?
A:This false claim is a badly distorted version of Obama’s
call for doubling the Peace Corps, creating volunteer
Nteworks and increasing the size of the Foreign Service.

Lets see,i think volunteer Networks is a code or cover for
recruitment for registering the ‘Volunteers’ as Democrats!

a. FactCheck.org ignores (likely deliberately) the current context, which is Emanuel’s radio interview statements and quotes from his book, which have recently come to the fore,
b. The fact that language on Change.gov said “require” and then was altered (after all the “right-wing blog” excitement) to “setting a goal,”
c. The Gestapo has nothing to do with it now or in 1935. The Hitler Youth movements didn’t have police powers or guns either. That wasn’t their purpose. But they were excellent vehicles for indoctrination.
No, Obama is not Hitler, not even close. But I assume both AP and EM have heard the phrase “thin edge of the wedge.” By all means, don’t become “deranged,” i.e. lose your objectivity. But there’s no reason to casually dismiss relevant evidence just because those advocating these programs speak in calm tones of voice, either.

d. No one is saying they will even get this off the ground. The worrisome thing is that the soon-to-be leader of the executive branch of the government, and his new Chief of Staff, are the sort of men who want to do this kind of thing. That they are even talking about something like this is horrific. It’s collectivism run amok.

katy on November 13, 2008 at 11:19 PM
That’s kind of what I’ve been wondering. I don’t know what the numbers are, and frankly I’m too lazy to look it up at the moment, but running every 18-25 y/o through a three month program would have to be a massive undertaking.
Think of the infrastructure that would have to be built. Think of the impact to the services sector of the economy when a huge portion of their labor pool is gone. And, like you said, who’ll be delivering the training?
The more I consider this, the more I think even Obama and Emanuel must realize this just isn’t feasible.

Exactly. I wonder what the “civilian” counterpart is going to be just for our strategic nuclear arsenal or blue-water navy. That’s a lot of funding and a lot of power to mirror at home. I guess he might just point our arsenal at US targets and have nuclear subs running the coasts to keep the “civilians” in order … Happy days.

I tend to listen to peoples word when they say something. It is the spin you are listening too. Obama in his own words said these things. Will it be a group like the SS? I doubt it at first. But history shows that once these types of groups get started they take on a life of their own. Best not to even start down the path. We have been blessed in this country of never having an armed coup. Of not living in fear of the army or the civil authorities because of our policitcal beliefs. We do not need this force whatever it will become. Obama was stupid for suggesting it. If he wants to increase the youth giving back to their country fine. fund the boy scouts, give to the red cross, start progrmas to help the candy strippers. Government can help fund private voluntary efforts.

FactCheck: Obama’s detractors make much of his expansive (and exaggerated) description of such a force as being “just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the U.S. military.
Translation: FactCheck decided that Obama was exaggerating–therefore, FactCheck decided that it’s dishonest to quote Obama as if he really meant it.
That is NOT unbiased fact checking! That is FactCheck spinning an inconvenient gaffe for Obama’s benefit (I really hope it’s just a gaffe).
