Palin: If Obama governs with the “greatness” of which he’s capable, we’ll be fine

A choice bit from her speech to the RGA this morning; skip ahead to 3:18, or to 9:00 for an extended passage on the young girls she tried to inspire on the trail and the visibility she’s brought to special needs families. She’s in the minority among conservatives, incidentally, in thinking The One can be a good president — but just barely. Just like our readership is in the minority in wanting her to become a national political figure.

Will she run for Senate anyway? Frum makes the case that she almost has to.

Palin is raising expectations for Obama and making herself a less divisive figure. VERY SMART!

D0WNT0WN on November 13, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Yep. She ain’t Billy Jeff, but there’s a little of him in her. And I mean the political skills.

I mean what is she gonna say, “F’off Messiah, I’ll do it my way thank you.”

What she is doing is setting some of the record straight, and clealy beginning the process of political reabilitation from the horrific mudslinging of the MSM.

I do believe she needs to test her metal some more during the last two years as governor and lead Alaska’s budget solutions with oil now back down. I’m convinced she has the guts to make the cuts if they have to.

Sapwolf on November 13, 2008 at 3:28 PM

I believe in AK the wealth (oil) is owned by the people. I think their constitution calls for the rebate to the people from the oil sales. That was part of AK’s admission to the Union. They had to have it in their constitution that the oil wealth would be spread so that they would not be a drain on Fed resources. She mentioned something about that to Greta. The fact that oil prices have been way up has helped their economy. It will be interesting to see how things go with oil prices dropping. Maybe that’s in the back of her mind as she considers the Senate.

BrianBoru on November 13, 2008 at 2:07 PM

The thing is, there are two different means of dispersing this wealth to the Alaskan population in place now. The one you’re talking about is the Permanent Fund (PF), which Palin did not implement. It currently gives about $2,000 per year per resident. On top of the PF, Palin raised taxes on oil companies to allow for “resource rebates” of about $1,200 per year. These are not part of the Permanent Fund, nor are the constitutionally required. Interestingly, when Palin was asked about this in her interview with Greta, she got it wrong too. She was asked about the resource rebate and delivered an answer about the PF, which are different things. She either doesn’t know what she’s talking about or is misleading the public to avoid being tagged as a “wealth redistributor”.

Big S on November 13, 2008 at 3:28 PM

anyone watching the last weeks interviews can see that gov Palin absent of McCain’s handlers is a force to be reckoned with and as smart as anyother. She also has 3 months experience of presidental campaigning down.

unseen on November 13, 2008 at 3:20 PM

Blame McCain again. So her improved performance has nothing to do with her being in a friendly interview environment?

You are right about the campaign, she did good for most of the debates and showed she was a quick study, but the damage was done.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Hey, nothing wrong with raising the expectations for Obama. If he lives up to superhuman expectations without stepping on too many toes, great. If he falls short, then the voters punt him.

Greek Fire on November 13, 2008 at 3:29 PM

I did, one of the many many reasons I did not vote for him.

I stopped listening to his speeches in July and his town halls in August.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 3:26 PM

And it sounds like you stopped listening to Palin after the Gibson/Couric debacles….you might want to turn on the television again, Shark.
I don’t give a fig what Couric asked, she is a little perky cheerleader that has squid for brains, no offense to you, Shark.
Palin speaks our values. She is away from the leash that Old Dusty Rino McCain put on her. She can speak her mind and what she is saying makes me want to get out there in two years and rustle up some votes for the republicans. She makes me want to show up next week and ask my local republican chair for my county…what can I do to help get us the house, senate, and in four years, the presidency back from these ass clowns that are hellbent to destroy our country. McCain and his ilk NEVER HAD THE BALLS TO DO THAT! When he was made our candidate, I said, Well, that’s it. We are going socialist, no matter who got into the White House. When Sarah was chosen, conservatives had hope that we could win. She redeemed a crap ticket.
WE have a CHOICE now. Old, rino crap or New, conservative future………Sarah will lead the charge and with others, we will prevail. We will take our party back from those that are sympathizers of the democrats. We will be republicans again. Count on it.

I blame McCain because he was an idiot. His campaign were run by idiots. He allowed idiots to handle Palin.

As far as tying our forgien policy to energy. It is one reason we are in Iraq and in kuwait and in afganistian and protecting Georgia.

energy is the main reason we can not do anything in Dafur. china is in Sudan because of energy. If we go into dafur we anger China. Not understanding that most of the world outspots are due to energy is childish. sure we have some outspots that are due to other factors. Ideaological like NK and SK. China/tawain or chevez/South AMerica. Some relgious like Pakistain/India some like Iraq with a mixture of all three.

But like ti or not with 7 billion people resources and energy are going to increasingly determine our forgien policy going forward. IRt to Russia esp. In the artic and around Alsaka.

McCain sux. He is the past, old rino past. I am tired of talking about his old, dusty tired ass. Don’t care about him. He can go to Arizona for all I care. Don’t need him thumbing his nose at my ideals and cozying up with Ted Kennedy again. Go home, you are done, get out of my way. You are on the endangered species list, McCain.

No offense taken, Sting.
I generally like Sarah overall.
Her positions are suficiently centerist in areas where I differ from the T.C.’s. With more time I think she will be a good two term guv and maybe even a president. If not she would make a bitchin senator or Sec of Interior.

Sorry it was a typo.

The “white flag of surrender” quip was the point where the cringe came back.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM

I do love how if we dont like the pick of Palin, we are trolls and Obama plants, it reminds me of the old days of the primaries and at CQ when all the McCain types were trolls.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 2:39 PM

The McCain ones might still be trolls.

The problem about negative opinions about Sarah so far on HA is that they are either not true, illogical, or simply anti-religious bias. As she progresses over the next two years, the honeymoon will be over and we can really get down to differentiating the different candidates who join the primary BASED ON FACTS.

One thing we CAN agree on. The party should not go down the middle. You win by being right of center and then persuading the middle to move to the right with a philosophy of freedom and quality small government solutions packaged up with a charismatic candidate.

jp on November 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

I’m surprised that we still have HA people who believe it was a windfall profits tax. Nope. The money in effect belongs to Alaskans already by rite that the f’in oil is theirs. Anybody who calls this a tax is trolling period.

When Wall-Mart raises the price on milk, it is not a windfall profit tax on YOU.

If it was a windfall profit tax I’d be the first to bail on Sarah. But, unlike some people here I actually spent a boatload of time investigating it and was able to conclude it is a royalty situation not a tax.

Sapwolf on November 13, 2008 at 3:44 PM

I say drill, drill, drill so we don’t have to rely on the Middle East for our oil. Then, we can tell them to pack uh, sand. Don’t have to play nice with those that hate us. We need to make sure we have a piece of that oil pie in case the barrels of oil go over $300….

Now is the time to thing about selling if you have held since the election. If we do not get past dow 9511 we go down again and we will not hold the 7750 lows of oct and nov.

Still see no reason to buy.

the south that is affected by that kind of Rhetoric does not need any kind of reenforcement.

We in FL have not been “the south” for years, despite being one of the first to seceed. VA has been inundated with yankees and retirees (like FL), therefore that wont fly. NC was always squishy on the confederacy and needed alot of pushing to go for secession, therefore they have a tradidtion of not buying that line.

GA, well they have a hell of alot of black people and you can understand that they arent to fond of the whole Confederacy thing as a group.

I sort of liked Palin a bit better when she was ripping Obarfi a new one on a daily basis, but she’s had to shift gears, at least for a time. The election is over and she is at a function today where the GOP governors are trying to emphasize the positive.

What is most striking to me is, Sarah Palin has this week become the new face and voice of the Republican Party. I happen to think that is a huge plus for us, but time of course will tell.

james23 on November 13, 2008 at 5:01 PM

If Obama fails on National Security WE ALL FAIL.

If Obama fails on the economy WE ALL FAIL.

I could give a crap about the social stuff. We can undo most of it in 4 years. He is a fool on the social side, but he better get a sobering wake up call with Presidential daily briefings or we are all screwed.

I pray for some inkling of a backbone in Obama as EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD.

portlandon on November 13, 2008 at 5:04 PM

Gov Palin should stay as Gov of Alaska … much better position than just another stooge in the Senate. She will make a great President in 2012. I sure don’t see the Senate as the be all end all for anything except grief for the American people.

If you ask me, we would be much better off as a nation if we repealed the 17th amendment. That was the wrong turn we took long ago.

tarpon on November 13, 2008 at 5:34 PM

Listen to this crap at CNN:

“Some Republican governors told CNN they were not particularly happy with the way the RGA press conference was executed Thursday, saying they agreed to go as a show of GOP governors’ unity, but they ended up feeling like silent Palin supporters, because it was clearly a press conference called for her.

The GOP governors spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity.

One called it awkward: “I’m sure you could see it on some of our faces.”

Another Republican governor eyeing a presidential run in 2012 told CNN the event was “odd” and “weird,” and said it “unfortunately sent a message that she was the de facto leader of the party.”In an interview with CNN, it was suggested to Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour that there has been a feeling among some GOP governors gathered in Miami that Palin has been sucking up all the media oxygen.

Barbour shrugged off that suggestion.”That’s just somebody running down a rabbit trail. There’s plenty of oxygen here,” he said.
advertisement

In another shift, Palin, who had been slated to take questions for 20 minutes or so, took just four reporter queries before Texas Gov. Rick Perry ended the news conference.

“We were running behind schedule,” Perry said”

portlandon on November 13, 2008 at 5:37 PM

I’m with ya, man, if politicians talk the way people from their own area actually do, it’s a dead giveaway that they are morons.

I far prefer the sonorous, brain-melting, coma-inducing tenor of a guy like JFKerry, or the hip urban patois of The Grand Messiah Obarfa: “Hey wassup Deeetroyt!”

You betchas and oh gollys are indicative of flyover inbred hickness….we don’t have the sauve sophistication of the Manhattan elites. Sorry about that.

Bishop on November 13, 2008 at 2:24 PM

There is an anti-elitism strain in the Republican party that is as extreme as the moonbat tendency.

I like the woman and respect her, but on prime time you can’t deny she came across as a dimwit. That is not to be celebrated – for one it doesn’t play well with the electorate.

There is another way. Fred Thompson, like him or loathe him, somehow managed to come across as articulate and genuine. Not bad for an actor eh? And they call him lazy – she seemed to make no effort and her public showing was simply embarrassing.

Ares on November 13, 2008 at 5:41 PM

I forgot to add that she was a wonderful demonstration that the hardcore social con agenda simply doesn’t sell.

This isn’t a christian country contrary to popular belief – and bible bashing freaks a whole lot of people out.

Ares on November 13, 2008 at 5:44 PM

CNN is misreporting Sarah’s speech today. The little reporterette is omitting all the talk about policy ideas and the future of the party and saying something like,”despite presenting a focus on the future, she largely talked about the past campaign” then a short clip of her saying what was good about being on the trail, things she will never forget.

They are trying to use the possible rivals in 2012 to continue the theme from the anonymous leaks also. They are asking all of the other Govs about Sarah instead of themselves to get them annoyed at questions about Sarah. Now some “unnamed” Govs are being quoted not endorsing her strongly. Well, could that be because some of them think they are going to run themselves? They are still playing games with all Republicans, turning one against the other on TV. The media is trying to turn this conference into 2012 backbiting, and ignoring the real stuff going on.

Can’t say I’m suprised. They will use her for ratings one day, then stab her in the back the next day.

Meanwhile, a very intelligent and capable person like Pawlenty wont get a 2nd look from you cretins. Maybe if Pawlenty bites the head off of a bat and rants about Obama being a socialist baby-killer you’ll give him a 2nd look.
