Palin: If Obama governs with the “greatness” of which he’s capable, we’ll be fine

A choice bit from her speech to the RGA this morning; skip ahead to 3:18, or to 9:00 for an extended passage on the young girls she tried to inspire on the trail and the visibility she’s brought to special needs families. She’s in the minority among conservatives, incidentally, in thinking The One can be a good president — but just barely. Just like our readership is in the minority in wanting her to become a national political figure.

Will she run for Senate anyway? Frum makes the case that she almost has to.

It IS amazing how a Sarah thread brings the Trolls out.

kingsjester on November 13, 2008 at 2:38 PM

You have to soak them in buttermilk, like moonbats, to tenderize them.
HornetSting on November 13, 2008 at 2:36 PM

Better to stake them out in the sun and wind, preferably alive, and make liberal jerky.

If they are tough eating, you can burn them in a wood stove or pelletize them and utilize a corn burner.

Maybe in 4. But she was not a positive influence on the ticket this time.

Also, she sounds fine on FP, so long as she can tie it to energy, which she is very very good at.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 2:36 PM

I will say this again without Palin McCain would have lost 49 to 50 states. I doubt he would have even won AZ.

But she was not a positive influence on the ticket this time. Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 2:36 PM

That is a very foolish notion. She was the conservative on the ticket. I think you could easly attribute a minimum of 10 million votes to her being on the ticket.

The problem was McCain and his “I know how to reach across the asile” crap.

Marine_Bio on November 13, 2008 at 2:39 PM

I do love how if we dont like the pick of Palin, we are trolls and Obama plants, it reminds me of the old days of the primaries and at CQ when all the McCain types were trolls.

If I didn’t know better, I’d say you’re wishing bad times on this great nation.

David Frum’s claim to fame is he took the credit for inventing the phrase “axis of evil”.

Actually I believe his wife had a party to celebrate his Axis of Evil phrase getting so many headlines and the email nvite leaked and word got out. He left the White House shortly thereafter and became an international affairs expert somehow.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 2:27 PM

Funny, that. She answered quite a few questions on foreign policy in the VP debate, without sounding like a moron. And without making things up out of whole cloth, like her debating partner, Joe the Biden.

ProfessorMiao on November 13, 2008 at 2:44 PM

I love her because she actually has a record of accomplishment. I enjoyed her speech, but it would have been nice if she threw down the gauntlet to the Republican Party by laying out an agenda for the next 4 years. She said the right things, just not forcefully enough. Maybe she was worried about coming across as a Prima Donna.

Before Palin McCain was down 8-10pts in national polls. He was broke and the RNc was having trouble getting funding.

After Palin. McCain went ahead of Obama got 10’s of millions in funding and the RNC got its funding in order.

Those are the facts. Places like NC, GA, Alaska, Montana, ND, SD were all trending Obama’s way before Palin.

If the McCain canmpaign would have used Palin correctly he could have been closer in the end.

what is your proff she hurt the ticket? Don’t see a loty of people saying they voted for Obama because of Palin. I do see the reverse and hear countless people say they voted for McCain because of Palin.

I got the “McCain Troll” alot, I recall No Donkey getting it to. Alot of it came from a fellow called HNAV. But that is not here nor there.

I am not ruling out a vote for the ‘Cuda in the future, but she is not presidential material right now, IMHO.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 2:48 PM

You mean the McCain types weren’t trolls? Well, I’ll be darned… Seems to me that those of us who fought so hard to get a true Conservative on the ticket were treated as trolls until we finally had no choice but to avoid the danger of Obammy any way we could. TLOTE syndrome was hard to kick, but we have done so. Never again…you RINOs think you’re so smart …live with this mess, it was part you’re doing too, you know.

So which side are we on? Or is that decision waiting for another ‘poll’?

The ‘Cuda hasn’t sold out. She’s just saying that if Obama holds true to all the lofty promises he’s made of how he’ll run this country well, we’ll do fine – just as Obama claims we will.

However, I don’t think she nor anyone else here is foolish enough to think Leper Messiah will be able to live up to his own rhetoric.

Anyone who follows politics closely knows that without Palin, it would have been a stunning defeat for McCain…unless he’d picked Romney whose cred re the economy might have turned things around. BUT – and this cannot be overstated – Palin did NOT hurt the GOP ticket, she kept it from suffering a historic defeat. It was McCain that hid her from the media that killed the campaign.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 2:54 PM

Obama isn’t stupid, and may be capable of greatness–he IS a great campaigner. But if the past is any guide to the future, and Obama listens to his radical, socialist, and anarchist mentors, as well as the Pelosicrats, we’ll soon be looking elsewhere for greatness.

Who knows, maybe in Alaska.

It was like oil/water between Palin and the McCain camp. The McCain camp did not believe in conservative principles thuis they did not want her to speak her mind. They wanted a figurehead to bring the base. They got it but they could have had the middle too if they would have allowed Palin to show people something to vote for as well.

Sarah was being gracious…and SMART. She basically said,
“If you govern in the best interest of Americans and do what you promised, cool. If not, prepare to hear about it.”

It was a smart move.

kingsjester on November 13, 2008 at 2:57 PM

Wishful thinking at best. The T.C.’s would have turned out out of fear of Obama for whatever reason. Palin just gave cover so they could keep their dignity.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 2:46 PM

I don’t think so. I know of 5 individuals, my wife being one of them, who don’t normally vote. I’m convinced that the inclusion of Gov. Palin pulled out more folks who are what I consider marginally active voters. I have no idea how this could ever be teased out in a survey, but there it is.

I however fall into the other category. I’ve voted in every election since I was 18 and was definitely one of the true conservatives you talked about who would have voted out of fear of the one. The selection of Palin was not a deciding factor.

Marine_Bio on November 13, 2008 at 2:57 PM

MNDavenotPC on November 13, 2008 at 2:58 PM

Still, if Odimmy’s own history is any guide, his shot at greatness will be a spectacular dud.

Interesting, that in a republican/libertarian state, she became popular by spreading the wealth (of the oil companies) around. Right?

lorien1973 on November 13, 2008 at 1:58 PM
She didn’t get the money from taxing oil companies. She got the money by raising the lease price on the oil fields that Alaska owns and leases to the oil companies. She did nothing differently than what a private landowner would do in the same circumstance. And yes, that’s a meaningful distinction.

Outlander on November 13, 2008 at 2:20 PM

I heard Palin say that, based on the State Constitution, Alaskan citizens own the resources underground, so it makes sene that their elected representative would find a way to obtain revenue for them, doesn’t it? And if she didn’t, there’s be a chorus of people criticizing her for not helping her constituents?

I am new here, and trying to choose my words carefully as to not ofend, but I am alreading noticing patterns of behavior from certain posters, where it appears they already know their opinion on a topic based upon the person involved, and seem to not need any actual facts inserted into their equation to determine who’s is right, who is wrong, who is well intentioned, and who is evil and scheming…..

Half right and half wrong. We do need to rebuild, on the principles that brought Reagan and the 1994 GOP Congress to power, and Palin exemplifies them, among others.

If Obama governs from the center, he could be successful President, but given his history (which he cleverly hid from the voters) and large Democrat majorities in Congress chomping at the bit, he will probably veer as far left as he can until public opinion starts turning on him.

Let’s face it–Obama won by being anti-Bush, pure and simple. By 2010, to paraphrase Nixon, there won’t be Bush to kick around anymore, only Obama and the Democrats. We do need our own positive program and proposals, but anti-Obama will look better in 2010 than now.

We can’t be ONLY anti-Obama right now because we don’t yet know what he will do, and neither do those who voted for him. But we do need to criticize Obama’s mistakes as soon as he makes them.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Before Palin McCain was down 8-10pts in national polls. He was broke and the RNc was having trouble getting funding.

After Palin. McCain went ahead of Obama got 10’s of millions in funding and the RNC got its funding in order.

Those are the facts. Places like NC, GA, Alaska, Montana, ND, SD were all trending Obama’s way before Palin.

Anyone with half a brain knows Palin turned around McCain’s chances and excited the base like no one in recent memory. McCain was a drag on his own ticket.

Governor Palin is repairing her image as we speak.

Watching Governor Palin on her own is further proof that the McCain handlers totally blew it. She has no fear of the press or the MSM. It was the McCain team that smothered her. Now that she is unleashed Governor Palin is very impressive. She has a confidence that can’t be faked.

You must have missed the Greta interviews, totally unscripted, and informative.
Interesting how Greta obtained more information, personally and politically, without ever attacking.
As an interviewer, she puts O’Reilly back into the sandbox.

The press conf. is hilarious. All the governors are on stage but Palin is the only one they want to talk to

As much as her dis tractors try to minimize her, she is the one that galvanizes the party.
The people really are attracted to her on a very personal level. I can see why she was at 86% approval in Alaska.

How does it scream troll?

You think the Media needs an excuse to go after a republican? They never had before, they just make crap up.

When she went off script she gave the media more inflamatory crap to throw at the ticket, no matter how true it was (i.e. palling around with terrorists. It was true but sure as hell does not play well, it gave Obama another opportunity to bring up the Muslim stuff)

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 3:07 PM

And that’s what’s important, if it plays well in the media…right? It doesn’t matter if it was the damn truth or not. I don’t give a fig what the media thinks, those that were stupid enough to believe their dribble and vote for the “muslim” were not going to mind that their messiah was paling around with known terrorists, hated America, and has a socialistic agenda. As far as you are concerned, I don’t know what your problem is. You can’t get over the fact that McCain was an albatross around Palin’s neck, not the other way around. I can’t help you there. You’re gonna have to dust off that old naggin of yours and think deeply.

I enjoyed the Great interviews, too, because they obtained substantial information for me, but also added personal details about their lives which helps me better understand why they (her family) think and act the way they do.

Despite all this Red State Blue State stuff, I think the real driving dynamic is more about rural and small town values and attitudes about the role of government versus urban attitudes about that role, and typically these are radically different. I believe the biggest challenge for Conservatives lies in showing how Constitutionally based, smaller, leaner, more transparent government can better address their problems and concerns.

Yeah, No kidding. I don’t know if it would have helped much in the end, as the country seems to have lost its mind, by giving control of both the house and senate back to the dems as well as the executive branch.

Squid Shark on November 13, 2008 at 3:09 PM

Everyone has weaknesses and strengths.
Her (Palin) strength is in the casual interview setting. She is not good (now) in the formal “gotcha” hang on every word. She interviews to connect to the people. I suspect she will allow interviews where she knows the every day normal people meet. She will accept Oprah (if asked) because she knows that audience, better then the “Meet the Press” audience.
She communicates and connects to the everyday person, no one can connect to everybody, the closest was Reagan. Her strength will be with the masses, and not the “masters”.

IF Sarah Palin had been running for President and McCain for Veep she would have beaten Obama.

Jdripper on November 13, 2008 at 2:59 PM

I’m not sure of that. Obama’ machine was very good. Still it would have been a lot closer and states like NC, IN and Oh would have gone to Palin. FL, Pa,NM, CO, NV? I’m not sure about them

unseen on November 13, 2008 at 3:01 PM

Who knows how much more impact she could have had. Remember, she only had 9 weeks on the campaign trail compared to 2 years for Obama. Her rise was astronomical by that standard alone.

I definitely like Greta’s interviewing style, but I have posed this question (somewhere on HA) recently…is Greta doing her job and asking, albeit it politely, tough enough questions of Palin? Or is she lobbing softballs?
I think I’ve seen so much MSM ‘coverage’ that i am no longer sure what i consider to be fair versus biased, regardless of which way that bias trends.
I think Greta’s style brings out more substance of the person she is interviewing. Anyone have an opinion as to whether or not Greta is being fair and not going too easy in these interviews?

If you want to protray Palin as a airheaded bimbo that’s your problem and reflects on your intelligence more so than hers. anyone watching the last weeks interviews can see that gov Palin absent of McCain’s handlers is a force to be reckoned with and as smart as anyother. She also has 3 months experience of presidental campaigning down.

“He hasn’t done anything wrong yet. It’s foolish to criticise him before he takes office. The media wouldnt like it.
Be gracious, wait until he slips up and the media has doubts about him, and then criticise.
lodge on November 13, 2008 at 2:29 PM”

This confuses me. I think Obama has already done a number of things wrong, even as a candidate, and now as a President Elect. “Call me if you need me” still echoes in my head.

I think it’s absurd to wait for the media of all entities to have doubts about him before we are critical. We must stay critical, and be critical. It’s not a matter of being an anti-Obama party, it’s a matter of sticking to your fight. If you were sincere before the election, then why has your anger calmed because he’s elected?

Sarah is a politician, and she’s savvy but part of this is the climate people like Hannity, etc. that she clearly listens to,and has referenced, are creating. This is just a biproduct of the whole “Republcian Black Helicopters”, Obama derangement syndrome, let’s delete any post that isn’t sad about Obama’s gramma attitude. I’m a Democrat who doesn’t wish Obama well. I hope he fails, because I don’t think his success would spell out my success as a Middle Class American who unlike Obama’s family and friends, loves America.
