Palin: If Obama governs with the “greatness” of which he’s capable, we’ll be fine

A choice bit from her speech to the RGA this morning; skip ahead to 3:18, or to 9:00 for an extended passage on the young girls she tried to inspire on the trail and the visibility she’s brought to special needs families. She’s in the minority among conservatives, incidentally, in thinking The One can be a good president — but just barely. Just like our readership is in the minority in wanting her to become a national political figure.
Will she run for Senate anyway? Frum makes the case that she almost has to.

Interesting, that in a republican/libertarian state, she became popular by spreading the wealth (of the oil companies) around. Right?
lorien1973 on November 13, 2008 at 1:58 PM
I’d like her a lot more if she’d bone up on current events, national issues, threats to the nation, economy. It’s time for some concise, articulate responses. No more wandering all over the map.
Get her a good communication coach.

Given that he’s only shown us that he’s capable of skyrocketing ambition and shameless self-promotion, I’m not quite clear what exactly she’s talking about here.
It’s good to be optimistic, but this is like saying that maybe those magic beans we traded for the cow, will grow into a beanstalk.
Probably not gonna happen.

My own favorite part on what’s changed in the last year: “I had a baby. I did some traveling. I very briefly expanded my wardrobe. I made some speeches, I met some VIPs, including those who really impact society, like Tina Fey.”

That’s deceptive. Most people probably think Obama could be a good President. We just find the concept extremely unlikely.

Whether you can call it that depends on whether it was the oil companies’ money or not. There may have been some land leasing deal with the state in place, or something – sort of like the Indian tribes do with companies who operate on reservation land.

Palin is raising expectations for Obama and making herself a less divisive figure. VERY SMART!
D0WNT0WN on November 13, 2008 at 2:03 PM
Obama has two models for a Democratic president in the last 40 years – Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Who was viewed as a success? Who was viewed as a failure? Who was reelected? Who wasn’t?
I continue to have a slim hope that Obama’s desire for continued political power will cause him to govern more like Clinton than Carter, despite Obama’s profound leftist tendencies. (Whether he actually has the administrative talent to implement good policies, assuming he wants to, is unfortunately a different issue.)
In any case, I think that Palin is proposing the right approach – oppose Obama over what he actually proposes and actually does, rather than on speculation regarding what he might do. Much better political strategy.
Realist on November 13, 2008 at 2:04 PM
benny shakar on November 13, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Nah, Obama can be a political failure (remember HillaryCare back in the ’90s?) without harming the country.
innominatus on November 13, 2008 at 2:04 PM
She is smart to put him on the pedestal. Raise his expectations, build him up, nothing wrong with that.
We should all say we expect great things from Obama, we expect him to live up to his promises, what he has campaigned on, and if he balances the budget, gets us out of all wars, decreases our energy use, and gives us clean energy, lowers our cost of living, gives us free health care, heal the sick and infirmed, lower our taxes, build our economy, encourage new business…then good for him, he should be president…but if he doesn’t, he has fallen far short of his promises, and he is a failure.
So Obama, I too say you can and should do all that you promised…and anything short and you are a just another politcal charlatan.

Frum is talking nonsense. This oil price drop is due mainly to the dollar rally which is from this perceived flight to safety, devleraging and meeting margin calls – which won’t last. Once all Bernanke’s crazy money printing hits the system the dollar is going to drop and oil will go to $200.
The end result is that only those states producing something that can be exported or is essential will maintain a good economy as consumer spending takes a massive hit.

Vashta.Nerada on November 13, 2008 at 2:07 PM
I think that’s her way of twisting the knife. The MSM and all the followers says he’s great – who are we to say otherwise? She already knows the answer to the question of “Will Obama be a great president?” We all do too.

I believe in AK the wealth (oil) is owned by the people. I think their constitution calls for the rebate to the people from the oil sales. That was part of AK’s admission to the Union. They had to have it in their constitution that the oil wealth would be spread so that they would not be a drain on Fed resources. She mentioned something about that to Greta. The fact that oil prices have been way up has helped their economy. It will be interesting to see how things go with oil prices dropping. Maybe that’s in the back of her mind as she considers the Senate.

Bad times are needed to get the electorate to dump Dear Leader before the insanity of what he represents gets a foothold. Bad times got rid of Carter and brought us Reagan. Right now bad times are the only thing that could save the Republic from an electorate willing to surrender to a dangerous socialist if only he helps them pay their mortgage.

The federal governmenbt purchased Alaska from Russia – so the gov’t owned all the land (and still owns most of it – very common in western states). When Alaska became a state the mineral rights were given to the Alaskan people so the state would be self-sufficient. Thy sell those rights to oil companies and receive a royalty in return.
This has been the cause of a lot of coruption in the state. One of Palin’s success stories has been to reform this proces and clean up the corruption.
kcewa on November 13, 2008 at 2:15 PM
Thank you Abby, Brian, and anybody else who explained the oil revenues issue – I don’t want to see Governor Palin accused of something she didn’t do, and I was almost certain there was a legitimate deal in place between the state and the industry, so I appreciate the confirmation of that.

She didn’t get the money from taxing oil companies. She got the money by raising the lease price on the oil fields that Alaska owns and leases to the oil companies. She did nothing differently than what a private landowner would do in the same circumstance. And yes, that’s a meaningful distinction.
On a related point, it shows great class for Palin to come out and say that Obama has the capability to be a great President. The reality is that Obama will NOT be a great President, because he’s way too much of a commie. But to hope for the best is what she should be doing.

This being positive and patriotic thing Conservatives are doing around Obama’s win really bugs.
Stick to your guns, be sincere, and save America by speaking the truth not putting on a false face front. Palin is a class act, but we’re not politicians, and I see the same attitude on conservative blogs trying to keep Obama from becoming as hated as Bush. Well Obama is adopting radical politics from both side of the fence (wealth redistribution on one side, diminishing separation of church and state on the other side, etc.) and he’s earning the ill will. Let it fly.

Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,010 national adults, aged 18 and older, conducted Nov. 7-9, 2008. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points.
Interviews are conducted with respondents on landline telephones (for respondents with a landline telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents who are cell phone only).
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

Bad times are inevitable under Obama’s proposals: raising the capital gains tax, removing tax protections on 401Ks and destroying an entire investor class, creating worthless WPA-like makework programs and do-nothing agencies, destroying the coal and auto industries for the sake of spurious, Greenpeace-inspired science, gutting 25% from the military and diverting half of remaining defense funding to a nebulously described ‘Civilian Defense Force’ whose implications are creepy beyond measure, and so on. But here’s the thing: the mainstream media wasn’t just in the Obama tank for the election cycle. They’re in it for the long haul. The MSM is committed. All criticisms of the Obama Administration will be obscured, ignored, omitted, or deflected. Those making the criticisms will be shouted down and shut down, their reputations ruined, and ultimately scapegoated for whatever Obama policy failures that do somehow emerge into public view.
