McCain source to Lowry: “Look, she wasn’t ready for this, obviously”

A few more handfuls of dirt chucked at the ‘Cuda via the Corner, and one last shot at piecing together who the leaker(s) might be:

The split over Palin, of course, poisoned everything at the end. One of the dividing lines was between her communications team and the policy advisers. The communications team seemed to consider her a dolt, while the policy people—like Steve Biegun and Randy Scheunemann—were impressed with her and her potential. As one McCain aide told me, “It’s the difference between considering her someone who lacks knowledge and someone who is incompetent, and they [the communications aides] treated her as the latter.”

By many accounts, the relationship between Palin and the staff assigned by the campaign to travel with her on her plane was dysfunctional and even hostile from the beginning. “She would have been better served if she had asked a couple of people to be removed from her traveling staff,” says one McCain aide.

Some McCain loyalists think the Bushies assigned to Palin let her down and then turned on her. This is a representative quote from someone from McCain world holding that view: “Look, she wasn’t ready for this, obviously. Their job was to make her ready for this and they failed. So they unloaded on her. If they had an iota of loyalty to John McCain, they wouldn’t have done it.”

Were there any Bushies assigned to Palin? Indeed there were. Were any of them communications people? Indeed: Tucker Eskew and … Nicolle Wallace, who was absolved by Chris Wallace but accused by more than one Palin ally of backbiting. Another possibility is Tracey Schmitt, who’s not a Bushie as far as I know and who spoke up in defense of Palin recently (as did, er, Wallace), but who fits the profile of a communications person whose confidence in the ‘Cuda seems to have been less than optimal:

Reporters really began to notice the change last Sunday, when Palin strolled over to a local television crew in Colorado Springs.

“Get Tracey,” a staffer called out, according to The New York Times, summoning spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt, who reportedly “tried several times to cut it off with a terse ‘Thank you!’ in between questions, to no avail.” The moment may have caused ulcers in some precincts of the McCain campaign, but it was an account Palin’s admirers in Washington cheered.

joey24007 on November 13, 2008 at 8:30 PM

Let it go. Palin needs to go back to Alaska, continue doing a good job as governor, learn more about world affairs, spend a lot of time talking on the Sunday morning talk shows and stay the hell out of the Senate. This will prepare her for a possible 2012 run. This lady is neither stupid or corrupt. Washington will make you both very quickly.

If y’all want to see Sarah’s base, go to GretaWire. Greta can put up a one-sentence post that says “What do you think of Governor Palin’s interview today” and get thousands of posts – most of them from rabid Palin supporters who eat trolls alive. That audience seems to be mostly older women. They make the most avid Cudaphiles at Hot Air or Ace of Spades look like pikers.

If you’re wondering why Greta is All Sarah All The Time, it’s because she knows which side of her bread is buttered.

Lots of bashing on Sarah Palin still going on. Sound to me like they are already trying to discredit her from a 2012 run (remember how early they started building up Obama). McCain was the drag on the ticket; not her.

Tommy_G on November 13, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Allah,

It needs documented, she is a fighter and she isn’t done. Governor Sarah Palin isn’t finished in Politics. Why don’t you and other bloggers, do her the favor, none afforded her during the election. Get some of these B’Tards, and nail the lid shut tight on them. Why let them go to fight another day. That isn’t how they do it in the Military, you get them now (While They Are Exposed) that way Sarah Palin doesn’t have to fight them twice. The Progressives won this battle but the war isn’t over.

Every criticism of Palin is really a criticism of McCain’s judgment. It’s his judgment that’s on the line in picking her. If he didn’t know what he was getting, he shoud have found out.

And he should have exercised some leadership in getting everyone on board and clearly stating a policy of no leaks that harm the campaign. If he can’t inspire loyalty in his staff, how could he do it with the country? Sadly, he couldn’t.

tru2tx on November 13, 2008 at 8:36 PM

So the policy people (substance) were impressed with her, but the communications people (style) didn’t like her. What does that say?

SAZMD on November 13, 2008 at 8:36 PM

I wanted Mac to pick her in June…

I was thrilled he did…I wish they would have just cut her loose…

No one expected her to know Foreign Policy…the problem is that she never got a chance to talk about her reforms and leadership as a governor. She was mishandled. The woman you see today would have been a even bigger asset that the one we saw during the Gibson/Coouric interview.

Bottom line…McCain blew it. If he thinks Palin lost the election for him (and we know she didn’t) he should look in the mirror…Trust me, Tom Ridge, Joe lieberman and Tim Pawlenty could put a Starbucks addict to sleep.

Palin charged us up. She carried the base, McCain pissed them off and lost indies…his “base”.

kybowexar on November 13, 2008 at 8:45 PM

Sarah is up against a RINO machine built and fueled by Bush for the last eight years. This election has taken quite a bit of steam out of them and now they are flailing around trying to fill a vacuum. Sarah doesn’t have to try. Regular Americans are pushing her to fill the void. That’s going to panic a lot of establishment talking heads and we can see the results.

They are trying to pressure Sarah into a mistake and they are using typical torture tactics to do so. They attack her relentlessly for a week. Then they make nice to put her at ease. Then the long knives come out again and take away hope and any gains she fells she made. They will continue this until they are cast aside by those of us left standing, or they destroy her. If they had anything substantial to use against her, they would. No affair, no drug use, nothing. So what is left? Just what they think is her weakness…..a unfamiliarity with Washington insider politics.

I’m telling you guys….I’m weeks ahead of this like I was on the war schedule and how Obama would win…..this is a critical point for her right now. I believe she is capable of staying focused like no other politician since Reagan. She knows who she is and that being herself is what we want. She will drag these slimbag RINO’s back into line by simply being who she, communicating her values, and thus creating a new base of conservative support in the Republican party.

Mark my words.

McCain’s campaign is an even bigger load of crap than I thought it was. It was like an enormous beanbag chair full of horse sh!t that McCain kept patching with pages from Reagan that he never read. Then, when he finally lost, McCain said “to hell with it” and just let the big sack of horse sh!t spill open where it may.

Kind of interesting the Bushies seem to be the sabotuers in all of this.

Hmm… Almost seems like that didn’t want McCain to win.

Hmm… Seems like they want Palin to fail as well.

A failed Obama administration could do wonders for Bush’s legacy in regards to “Wow, at least we weren’t eating shoe leather when Bush was president” or “Wow, at least Russia would think twice before invading Ukraine when Bush was president”. A failed Obama administration — and a pissed and tired Republican base with no clear “conservative” to turn to — could do wonders for… Jeb Bush, perhaps?

His wife is Hispanic. They’re catholic, Conservative, and he is a popular ex-governor of a southern swing state with an *extremely* diverse electorate.

Sigh… I do enjoy contemplating the grassy knoll a little too much.

Were there any Bushies assigned to Palin? Indeed there were. Were any of them communications people? Indeed: Tucker Eskew and … Nicolle Wallace, who was absolved by Chris Wallace but accused by more than one Palin ally of backbiting.

All this certainly jives with the original Politico article. I’ve been a little suspicious of Eskew for a while. Maybe he’s just on vacation, but we sure haven’t heard anything from him on the record. Look at his history with Bush, in South Carolina especially. He doesn’t mind playing very dirty, and hiding while he does it.

I don’t know about Nicolle Wallace, but whether she did the leaking/smearing or not, I think it’s obvious that she (and the rest of the senior staff for that matter) and the ‘Cuda did not get along. I’m still wondering a little about Nicolle’s hubby Mark too. Didn’t he make the Alaska trip with Palin And wasn’t he part of her debate prep?

Well said. I just wish the GOP knew better than to nominate McCain in the first place. He couldn’t overtake GWB in 2000 and we expected him to beat a young, charismatic black man? Right…

Field dressing a moose does not teach you how to to field dress the liberal media. Two unrelated, but highly praiseworthy skills. Cuda got the first, and not the second (yet).

indythinker on November 13, 2008 at 9:05 PM

We will probably have to wait months to get news from the cuda warrior…

Please… do we really think that they won’t follow her? She’s gold. And I think she should give them all the face time they want – while the MSM isn’t on the offense. Take advantage of this honeymoon period with the new Leader.

pinkelephants on November 13, 2008 at 9:05 PM

I wish it would stop too, but as long as moronic, anonymous statements keep happening, it’s news. They shutup and this will stop. Or at least the bad stuff. I wouldn’t mind hearing about her successes in Alaska.

Exit question: Time to stop blogging this soap opera? We’re never going to get closure so we might as well stop watching.

…I don’t know…let’s keep digging…get some names….

…I’m thinking Madame DeFarge here…remember ‘em for next time….

…it’s the villains who you think are allies who can best put the dagger where it’ll do the most harm….

Puritan1648 on November 13, 2008 at 9:05 PM

Pardon me if I yawn.

You sound quite a lot like Nero…

HebrewToYou on November 13, 2008 at 9:05 PM

(And why couldn’t she bring some of her own staff from Alaska?)

Those are government employees, not personal staff. Sarah is not rich. That’s why she needs a PAC, to cover the expense of stuff like that, and for other things like her family’s travel, etc.

I’ve heard some estimates that Sarah can command $7 million or more for a book deal (the source of Obama’s personal wealth). She can get even more for speaking engagements. We need to get her some money of her own to put her on an even playing field with the rich RINOs she’ll be taking on in the primaries.

Jim62sch on November 13, 2008 at 9:06 PM

Every day that Sarah does not set up a PAC is a day that she is losing thousands of dollars of potential donations. People are fired up to support her.

Jim62sch on November 13, 2008 at 8:47 PM

I emailed TeamSarah and told them that yesterday…they’ve reached over 57,000 members last time I checked. They need to convert to a PAC now, while the excitement is high.

You’re the one steering the conversation Allah. It’d be nice to talk about substantive ‘Cuda issues rather than these “Mean Girls,” sexist, peripheral topics. Let’s pretend she’s a male and see what we talk about? Think it’d be any different??? How about energy policy, taxes, governing style, ethics, whatever, just anything issue related would be nice.

conservative pilgrim on November 13, 2008 at 9:07 PM

I think the longer she stays on the radar screen the better. She is doing a fantastic job and it is resonating out there.

As for this charade/mystery with the supposed leaks, I am sure it is just a matter of time before that little weasly Frank Luntz offers to rent a hotel ballroom and wire up the entire McCain staff to test their every reaction to her speeches with his little dial-toys. He is dying to get himself on television one more time. I swear he is a lie-detector analyst trying to pass himself off as a professional pollster.

…nothing about the post…I’m wondering about the name….

…does “HebrewToYou” mean that you would object to the word “Jew”?

…or, do you run a delivery service?

“Hello? HebrewToYou? Could you send over two Ashkenzis, a Haredi rebbe, one JAP, one Messianic and a side of fries, please? No…hold the guilt.”

Puritan1648 on November 13, 2008 at 9:11 PM

This is essentially about telling the American people to STFU, sit down and do as you’re told.

spmat on November 13, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Exactly

If the coward won’t step forward, let them all pay for it. They’re all part of the team that not only lost, but disgraced themselves in defeat. Anybody who ever hires any them again will never get my vote.

Jim Treacher on November 13, 2008 at 8:48 PM

Seriously… We need to convey to the rest of the politicians that this kind of pettiness won’t be tolerated. These people were supposed to do a job and they failed miserably by half arsing what they were hired to do, solely because they felt their charge was beneath them. This requires political Seppuku.

Exit question:
If one half of Team Palin (who spent every waking hour with her) dismisses her as a dolt, while the other half politely says she “lacks knowledge” — and a bunch of people on the internet who hadn’t even heard of her three months ago declare her the the salvation of the GOP… who are the real dummies?
