Iran: On second thought …

posted at 11:35 am on November 13, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Iran has spent the last two years demanding unconditional, direct talks between themselves and the US before negotiating on their pursuit of nuclear power/weapons.  Now that the US has elected a President who agreed to those terms, Tehran has changed its mind.  Now they claim that the differences between the two nations are too great for unconditional talks:

Since 2006, Iran’s leaders have called for direct, unconditional talks with the United States to resolve international concerns over their nuclear program. But as an American administration open to such negotiations prepares to take power, Iran’s political and military leaders are sounding suddenly wary of President-elect Barack Obama.

“People who put on a mask of friendship, but with the objective of betrayal, and who enter from the angle of negotiations without preconditions, are more dangerous,” Hossein Taeb, deputy commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, said Wednesday, according to the semiofficial Mehr News Agency.

“The power holders in the new American government are trying to regain their lost influence with a tactical change in their foreign diplomacy. They are shifting from a hard conflict to a soft attack,” Taeb said.

For Iran’s leaders, the only state of affairs worse than poor relations with the United States may be improved relations. The Shiite Muslim clerics who rule the country came to power after ousting Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, a U.S.-backed autocrat, in their 1979 Islamic revolution. Opposition to the United States, long vilified as the “great Satan” here in Friday sermons, remains one of the main pillars of Iranian politics.

Thus dies another Bush Derangement Syndrome fallacy.  Critics of the current administration here and abroad blamed Bush for not having normal relations with the Iranians.  In truth, the Europeans didn’t — and don’t — want the US to have direct negotiations with the Iranians yet, because it would reduce the leverage they have on Iran as trading partners.  The Iranians never wanted direct talks; they hate the US and Israel and aren’t interested in being buddies.

This is the point that Obama and his allies never seem to understand.  Some people just hate us, and not because of our policies on trade and security.  Iran is a nation run by radical Islamist mullahs who see secular democracy as the enemy of their religion, and Western values as a temporary heresy which they plan to correct with a global caliphate under Iranian control.

Irans’ mullahs see America as the bastion of these values, and Israel as our outpost for them in the region.  Europe is mostly irrelevant to them; they can deal with Europe after eliminating the arsenal of democracy, or hobbling it so badly that we no longer make a difference.  That’s why Mahmoud Ahmadinejad holds symposiums on a world without the US and Israel.

Addendum: The Iranians also claimed that they tested a long-range missile yesterday, but apparently no one else saw it:

On Wednesday, Iran test-fired a two-stage, solid-fuel rocket, Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammed Najjar announced on state television. He said the missile had a range of 1,200 miles — meaning that it could reach Israel and U.S. targets in the Middle East.

In Washington, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said that he could not “independently confirm media reports indicating an Iranian missile launch,” but added that “Iran’s missile program is a concern that poses a threat to its neighbors in the region and beyond.”

A two-stage rocket launch is hardly a secret, especially with American satellite technology.  If no one can confirm it, it probably didn’t happen.

Well, The One should go to Iran, with no pre conditions. Talk to them and play Basketball, or Bowling. This will be interesting to see. Iran lies a lot. But I wouldn’t play with them. They do want Israel to be destroyed. If we take troops out of Iraq. The Iraqi’s will befriend Iran. What else can they do? Yesterday was a violent one in Iraq. I sure hope that The One realizes that we are needed there for a while longer. But, I hope in a way Israel does something soon. Hate to say this, but things are not going to get better.

Opposition to the United States, long vilified as the “great Satan” here in Friday sermons, remains one of the main pillars of Iranian politics. — Capn Ed

Once you have eliminated all the Jews, it becomes much harder to claim that Jews are the reason things still aren’t right with the world. That just gets in the way of continuing the mullahs’ oppression of their own people. Ask Hitler. Once the “Final Solution” is complete, you have to find someone else to rally the nation to fight. Like Bolsheviks, gypsies, homosexuals, blacks, anyone with impure thoughts or blood.

Once you claim Americans are not such bad, evil people, you remove all pretense that their previous policies and actions were ever bad at all, and the entire “Death to Satan, Death to America” house of cards comes crashing down. In fact, then you have to start apologizing for calling for the deaths of all Americans and deaths of all Jews in the world for the last 30+ yrs. You might even have to acknowledge that you were wrong about some things.

No mullahs would ever do that. Might find out he was gay or something. And that would never do in Iran would it?

The words used by Iranian politicians these last 30+ yrs cannot be wiped away like chalk dust. They advocate for Death of any and all who don’t agree with the Islamic faith and the Islamic style of government. I remember every word. Those leopards cannot change their spots. They hate us. They always will. And there is only one way to deal with them. As hostile.

Some of us did. This was a “welcome to the big leagues Mr Obama” message.
More directed messages are surely being prepared. What did Biden say, test the mettle of this brilliant new president?

Iran intends to test it, that seems certain.

The US and Israel could vanish tomorrow, and the mullahs would simply transfer theiur hatred to anohter. Love ya too Beth! My hair is curly and natural white blond. Was past my knees, but that was to much. I am a Heavy Metlaist, real Hard Rock, Old Rock. A tiny Country music too. Would be great being your neighbor too! We are serious about this. Only problem is, How much our home value went down. It will take time. If you like, my email addy is sheebe43@yahoo.com. This way won’t be interrupting the topics to much. I will give you real addy also. Could use your advice. They had a Earth Quake drill a few minutes ago. The sirens might have aged me now though. :)

Oh isn’t this juicy,Dinnerjacket wanted talks without
conditions, along comes ‘Perfect Hopey’,and Iran backs
out!

Iran also wants the United States Military to leave Iraq,
and in their wacked minds will get back some kind of
respect in doing so!!

The bottom line:

Iran wants nuclear weapons!

Iran on pre-conditions has been a stalling tactic
and smoke screen for acquiring their ‘Manhatten Project’!

Iran wants America and Israel to vanish, the sooner
the better,according to Dinnerjacket!

Once thats out of the way ‘Persia’ will be reborn and
they will expand across the globe!!

Iran does not want peace,if Dinnerjacket is saying that
hateing the US is a cornerstone of Iranian Politics, and
Hopey(song from the who)is the same as the last boss, then
there will never, ever be peace with Persia, period!

Iran will be at war for the next 5000 years until they
finally get what they want!

Its time for some underground nuclear facilities to
be vapourized and be left as a smokin gaping hole,
and if there’s active plutonium, let it sprinkle all
over Tehran!

The North Ridge Quake is something I will never forget. In Ventura, the duplex I lived in. Was totally destroyed. Had a 200 gallon tank. All my fish gone. Guess they had this one planned today. Forgot of course. The young ones on here are incredible. Makes me have more hope for our Future. This site gives me a comfort. I have learned a lot from all of you. I got a tad snippy last night on the Gay marriage thread. Been a good girl. So, where is Trailboss been? Very impressive person.

You’ve got mail :)

beththebaker on November 13, 2008 at 1:26 PM

Sad thing is, So many Iranians do not like how their Country is. Gays think they have it bad here without being able to get married. They hunt them down over there and execute them there. They should have researched Mr. Hoppy more thoroughly.

The two stage rocket attack, Stage One: Warren Christopher as Secretary of State, Stage Two: Jamie Gorelick as Attorney General.

Can you believe that? I am still sick at that thought.

sheebe on November 13, 2008 at 1:32 PM

In a sad, sick way, this is kind of funny. Hopey O’Dopey brings unicorns and rainbows to the middle east — NOT. Of course, anybody who ever believed that the barbarians hate us because of our “policies” is incurably naive. They only “policy” of ours that they hate us for is continuing to exist. So much of what the gullible masses voted for is going to turn out to be similarly foolishly optimistic. I hope they figure it out by 2010, before we have $12/gal gas and $4/KwH electricity (just wait, it’s coming!).

If I didn’t have a 16 year old son that will probably have to register for a draft, I would think that watching Obama’s descent into catastrophic failure hilarious. If the Democraps handling of the financial crisis is any indication of how they will handle a foreign crisis, I’m going to learn arabic.

Not long ago it was spicy Moonbat Ribs, with bright and happy memories of late summer evenings around the barbeque. Time passes so quickly now…

Did they ever confirm that “President Tom” in Iraq was on of the “Hostage Takers” in the ’80’s Hostage Crisis?

By the way, ladies, as I said on the “Trig” thread, I’m y’all’s age, too.

Can I get some shipped to China? Moonbat used to be everywhere and cheap here, but somehow the population crashed and now they’re hard to find.
