AF General: Keep missile defense

Saying that American security interests will suffer significant damage if missile defense gets derailed, Air Force Lt. Gen. Henry Obering called on Barack Obama to maintain the programs in place. Obering said that people have an outdated sense of the potential for missile defense, and hopes to start briefing the incoming administration soon on its importance:
The Air Force general who runs the Pentagon’s missile defense projects said that American interests would be “severely hurt” if President-elect Obama decided to halt plans developed by the Bush administration to install missile interceptors in Eastern Europe.
Lt. Gen. Henry A. Obering III, director of the Missile Defense Agency, told a group of reporters Wednesday that he is awaiting word from Obama’s transition team on their interest in receiving briefings.
During the campaign, Obama was not explicit about his intentions with regard to missile defense. The program has tended to draw less support from Democrats over the years, particularly during the Reagan presidency when it was seen as a “Star Wars” effort to erect an impenetrable shield against nuclear missile attack from the Soviet Union. More recently the project has been scaled back, although it has again created an East-West divide by stirring Russian opposition to the proposed European link.
Obama has said it would be prudent to “explore the possibility of deploying missile defense systems in Europe,” in light of what he called active efforts by Iran to develop ballistic missiles as well as nuclear weapons.
Actually, Obama made a pretty explicit statement about missile defense early in the campaign:
He did leave himself some wiggle room by talking aboutunproven missile-defense systems, but that’s standard boilerplate on the Left for the entire program. The thrust of his message was a wholesale disarmament on new systems, especially missile defense. He wanted to position himself to Hillary Clinton’s left and win the support and enthusiasm of the MoveOn/Code Pink wing of the Democratic Party.
Now that he’s won the election, the question will be whether he actually committed himself to that path, or whether it was just a campaign tactic. The signals since Election Day have been mixed. He confused Poland with his vacillation on missile defense earlier this week, but in any case did not rule out a continuation of the program Obering commands. He has a free hand to do so, and his reluctance could signal a more open approach to missile defense than he gave in the primaries.
Of course, Obama received his national-security briefing this week as well. Former national-security advisers liken that experience to a cold dash of water, as a new President absorbs all of the threats the nation faces for the first time. We’ll see if Obama has decided that an umbrella against nonrational, asymmetrical threats like Iran makes sense soon enough. A quick acceptance of Obering’s offer certainly seems in order either way.

I’m betting Obama $hit his pants when he got the briefing.
He’ll be singing a different tune I’ll wager.
I pray to God he doesn’t want to white flag it.
We’ll never survive Russia & China’s rising power.
I’m starting to pray real hard.

More seriously. With the government starting the year with a 230 billion deficit which could inch up to a trillion dollars. The Fed loaning out 2 trillion dollars that it will not make public; what is affordable anymore.
It’s an important question and discussion that needs to be had.

Besides, who needs missile defense when you have the power to make the oceans recede and the air cleaner just be being elected?
Missile flies toward Poland, Super Majestic Dude merely waves his hand toward the east and the missile disappears.
Ooooohhhh, Obama! *swoons*

So does he listen to General “Betrayus” or MoveOn.org…I bet he sides with the Generals.

Which of our enemies would want to shoot missiles at the US while Hussein is prez? I mean, they might hit him, and that would be counterproductive from their perspective.

Its already in the works…
Romeo13 on November 13, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Something that has been on my mind, not what you stated but something closely related.
Remember when they said the only way out of a depression or recession was a war? Guess that theory is out.
When we spend for military, that money, of all things the government spends, is spent in America.
All of the defense missile system parts are American, I am pretty sure we don’t have China build our missiles.
So, although it is a drain, it is spend here, and the money that the workers are paid is spent here, the true cost to us is the cost of raw materials, and government oversight. Everything else, money wise, is recycled into our economy with jobs, houses, cars, etc.
That is why the military budget is so effective in a capitalist economy. Now when we send soldiers overseas, and stationed there, that is money drained out of our country. Or we refuel tankers, buy food, re-fuel planes, etc, out of country, that is a money drain.
But developing a missile system? That is better and more effective then any other government program.
And then selling the system to another country, that works.

Nah. I imagine he probably disbelieved it.

But Obama, with his vast military experience and savvy (re: the surge is a failure), said, “Nah. We don’ need no stinkin’ missile defense.”

Always, that is their job, to assess the effectiveness of a defensive missile system., militarily.
right2bright on November 13, 2008 at 2:59 PM
This was one of the many reasons why I did not vote for Obama. IMHO I believe he is going to gut our military, intelligence, and defensive capabilities (like Clinton did) to have a “budget surplus” he can brag about to the American people, which won’t mean squat after one of our cities is vaporized by an Iranian nuke!
If Obama does scrap missile defense he is placing our nation and its people in a very precarious and dangerous position and by doing so one has to wonder what Obama’s true agenda and path for America is. After all with how little we know about him and how little he was vetted by the MSM many people that voted for him really don’t know much about him, and while many of us here on this site know enough about Obama to be very concerned about his agenda and ideology, it is obvious those that elected him are blinded by THE ONE’s charisma and are not concerned in the least, like lemmings marching toward a cliff!
If he scraps missile defense and guts our military and intelligence capabilities at this dangerous time in our history then it is logical for those not blinded by his celebrity to question what his real agenda for America is!
Be afraid, be very afraid and keep an eye on THE ONE!

“but the good news is the WORLD LOVES him”
And yet another good reason not to support him or his ideas. World envy has long attempted to weaken us to the level of less than stellar countries and by supporting someone that will lead us to that point, “the world” tips it’s hand. I’m really being to think Isolationism is the way to go.

HornetSting on November 13, 2008 at 3:26 PM
He is not stupid, he wants another 4 years and unless the economy is clicking he won’t get it…and the only way for it to click is by spending on the military.
He hasn’t figured that out yet, but when he starts “cutting” the military budget…he will see how much of our economy is tied to that little defensive missile system, how much our economy depends another sub, or another fighter.
And nothing like a couple of fighters to a friendly nation, to make them more friendly.
If Obama wants 4 more years, he won’t do what Carter did.

“In their meetings, the group stressed the bipartisan nature of support in congress for missile defense, and highlighted the existing medium and short-range missile threat from the Middle East, as well as the projected threat of a long-range ballistic missile threat.”
Got that googling. Sounds like we are supporting democracy in the region?
Mr_Magoo on November 13, 2008 at 3:38 PM
I think Europe should be the ones out front pushing the missile defense issue. Europeans should also pay the bill. If they won’t, then the US military should leave and come home. With Obama, I’m sure our European friends will glady assume responsibility for their own defense.
luckybogey on November 13, 2008 at 3:45 PM
To those who think we can ignore the rise of fascism and criminality overseas, how long before we pay the price and the threat becomes to great. If the worlds greatest democracy acts weak, our friends and enemies will act accordingly.
rob verdi on November 13, 2008 at 3:45 PM
Barry will never have enough proof for a “proven” missle defense system. Look for him to balk at the Russians, try to make nice, turn his back on NATO and Poland, scare our allies, embolden and green light our enemies and then try to blame it all on Bush
sladenyv on November 13, 2008 at 3:49 PM
Wonder if the nutroots will call him a warmonger if he decides that after reading that incredibly long and stunning morning briefing (which Clinton did not seem to think was important enough to meet with Tenet about) that he decides that Bush and his anti-terror policies were not so dumb after all.
He is F*&@#$ either way he goes: If he governs from the center, he will get hammered by the nutroots and will constantly fight his own party’s libtards, and if he governs from the left he will leave us open to disaster and will not be able to blame W for it.

Lt. Gen. Obering, bless him but he is probably going to be ushered into retirement by Obama’s people by Spring.
We already know the Pentagon is being muzzled by Congress to pave the way for the arrival of the Obama defense cuts. Just ask retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney.

This is going to be a very dangerous era for our country, made even more dangerous when the military and the president are publicly not on the same page. The president-elect needs to begin consulting with military brass and defense so that mixed messages aren’t being sent to the world. The London Telegraph reported yesterday that Mr. Obama has already indicated to Polish President Lech Kaczynski that the chances of a United States-led missile shield in Europe now stood at no more than 50 per cent. Mr. Obama may consider himself to be a ruler, but if he has convinced himself that his flawlessness is capable of conducting foreign policy “on the fly” we should all be very concerned about the results. He is reckless. I don’t know why the voters can’t see it.

And here’s where I jump in — yet again — to tell folks why we’re putting missile defense in Europe.
Yes, it defends Europe. But most importantly, it defends the continental US — it’s the first line of defense against any US-bound Iranian ICBM. Go here, read about halfway down, look at the map. The Polish and Czech sites were not picked out of a hat.
Re: Lt. Gen. Obering. He retires later this month. Army Gen. Patrick O’Reilly has already been confirmed by the Senate to become director of the Missile Defense Agency (of which I am a contractor).

I don’t understand this continued ‘hope’ that Obama will do what is right with this type of stuff. Well, I guess I understand it in a way – we all hope that Obama wil govern wisely and do what we wish him to do, based on a reasoned analysis of the facts.
Obama doesn’t have a defense minded bone in his entire body though. Look at this rhetoric, his positions and his past. Missile defense was already proven when he recorded that little diddy above. He’s already “not committed” to an ally on this very issue.
Even if Obama were to keep the defense batteries in place which are already operational, does anyone really believe he will continue to fund them and allow for R&D for continued improvement? Allowing something to remain and then allowing it to wither on the vine would be something I wouldn’t put past him.
Obama already has military advisors anyway – McPeak and Clarke – and both of them are against said defense! Clarke is just a partisan moron and McPeak, well, if it didn’t originate on a power point slide, it doesn’t exist.

I would advise them to leave the military. they’re going to be screwed royally during the obama years.
look, the whole point is that we went to war to defend this country when they hit NYC. the democrats did nothing but oppose those efforts…so why should we defend them against attack at all?? they don’t want to go to war against those who attack them…so why bother?

My fear is that Obama is going to make ego-based decisions. We all know he has no idea what he is doing in this job. But his rhetoric and flowery speeches made him King of the World. How does he now admit that what he said isn’t what he is going to do? His ego is inflated to the point that it may take over his logic (what little there may be).
I think his biggest fear is to walk into a room and have people dislike him rather than faint or throw roses.
It takes a big man to admit he may have been wrong and I don’t think he has the character to do such.

what deceitful idiots. I should go into reporting, it really requires no standards whatsoever. you can either be a complete fool or a complete liar.
They mention “Star Wars” which was a non-functional Reagan era plan meant to bluff the Soviets (it worked) but they didn’t mention that todays missile defense, supported by Clinton, is quite funtional.
They claim Obama has not been explicit about his intentions when he has repeatedly attacked it and promoted cutting it drastically.
And then the above quote, where they outright blame the missle defense program on Russian aggression. Russia, if they were truly our friend, would have no problem with a missile DEFENSE program being built on European soil. they could have been a part of it if they wanted and the program is meant to defend against the likes of Iran anyway. Also, Russia misses their old Soviet Empire and wants the oil reserves in the Caspian Sea, their recent behavior has nothing to with missile defense. They just use it as an excuse and the limp wristed dunces at the AP buy into it word for word.
