Surprise: Gun sales through the roof since election

The LA Times piece is even more vivid than the clip. What’s the problem? Can’t a guy flip-flop egregiously on a watershed Second Amendment case in the middle of a campaign without people questioning whether he’s serious about gun rights?
At this rate, The One might end up being the best friend the NRA ever had. Exit question: Will the Rahm Emanuel Civil Defense Corps be lending a hand in gun “registration” enforcement, or will we be leaving that to the pros?

For those buying guns for the first time, do these things as well:
1) Get professional gun safety training
2) Join the NRA

I have Jim Moran as my Congressman, Mark Warner and Jim Webb as my Senators and will soon have Barack Obama as my President.
How much worse could death be? Especially if I’m buried in a Democrat-free veterans cemetery?
NoDonkey on November 13, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Jim Moran is another co-sponsor of H.R.1022.
xtremeangler on November 13, 2008 at 11:46 AM
Of course.
Jim Moran doesn’t need a firearm when he assaults 10 year olds, Catholic Priests or when he badmouths joooooos, or when he takes bribes.
Moran is a man’s man in the Richard Simmons style. Word.
NoDonkey on November 13, 2008 at 11:52 AM
I will call your Moran with a Baghdad Jim McDermott and raise you with Patty Murray (Osama Mama) and Maria Cantwell. The three of these are probably having orgasms each night dreaming about how to make things even worse than they are (except for Patty. She probably dreams of voting for more unicorns…)

My $.02 on 9mm…
I favor the Ruger SR9. It is small, thin and the gripes about the SR9 trigger are coming from individuals who are exceptionally well-versed in firearms and as such tend to have ingrained biases and preferences won from long experience. A novice or infrequent shooter doesn’t care if the trigger is slightly “gritty” or that it might be a quarter of a pound heavier on the pull than a Glock 19, or whatever. Joe Shooter (or Six-pack, or Plumber) really just needs something that goes bang, puts a lethal amount of lead downrange, is reliable, simple to clean and maintain, and doesn’t bust the budget. Your mileage may vary, but my preference is the SR9. However, there’s a million great choices out there.

Thanks for the advice. I recently joined the NRA. My next step is to take care of number 1. As for a personal firearm, I think I’m leaning towards the Glock 19.

I bought as of right now:
1 30.06
1 10/220 .22 rifle semi auto with accutrigger
1 AR-15 with a nice accutrigger and comfort stock
tomorrow I am getting a 12 guage shot gun.
Ammo is running low everyone. If you can’t find it go out more towards the country towns near you and look for ammo and gun stores there. they will have ammo if you are looking for it. That is what I had to do.. go to Wasilla.

I would recommend the people’s weapon an AK 47 (semi) it shoots the 7.62 x 39 round…the most abundant round in the world.
if I had to have one gun, and only one gun, it would be the AK..it always works…and it provides a good pop.

AR-15 or AK-47?
kelly Tejera on November 13, 2008 at 12:28 PM
This thread’s been an interesting read, I seriously doubt that things will deteriorate to the extent some fear, though. I honestly wonder if those who proclaim that no one will take their weaponry would actually resist in the manner claimed?
Having said all that, I will only reiterate–should anyone want me, I be here where I’ve ALWAYS been, 20 rounds up the driveway.
irongrampa on November 13, 2008 at 12:30 PM
A glock is nice. 9 mm usually are. What I would do (and this is MY suggestion) is go to a nice gun store or if you have a Sportsmans warehouse (like a cabella) and let the clerks (who are ALL certified) let you hold a few different hand guns. If it is NOT comfortable (depending on hand size) go with something bigger if you have large hands or smaller. It does matter. Don’t be a “man” about it, be comfortable with what you buy.
Since you really have never shot or held a gun… this is MY suggestion. Take a couple classes with the Wild Turkey Asso. if the NRA classes are full.
Also try a couple shot guns and rifles. You will NEVER go wrong with those either.
I am female… I like my rifles better (my AR-15 is my favorite) then my hand gun… it is more comfortable to me then my .40 cal. But it is all about what you prefer.
The reason is… and this sounds dumb to most…. but what feels comfortable in your hand will help out with your shooting ability.
Good Luck!

D2Boston on November 13, 2008 at 12:45 PM
For those with limited amounts of money to spend, I would endorse the SKS and a Ruger 9mm autopistol. Use the money you save to buy ammo.
And set aside at least one day a month as a Shutztag:
practice, practice, practice…
pseudonominus on November 13, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Buy one of each, shoot both and keep the one you like best. Sell the other for a profit to pay for more ammo for the keeper!
My AR is more accurate and is of much higher quality. I haven’t had any problems with reliability, but keep it clean and use good brass-cased ammo. The steel case russian stuff can cause issues for several reasons. The cool part is all the different ways you can configure it – different upper/barrel setups, stocks, rails, scopes and sights.
My AK is accurate enough at reasonable range, shoots cheap steel-case russian ammo – dirty or not. The fit and finish is marginal, but it doesn’t hurt reliability. Right now it costs about 60% of an AR. There are some options on stocks, but not near the flexibility of the AR platform.
Decisions, decisions…
But right after I wrote this, both mysteriously disappeared.
Mini14 on November 13, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Either one is a good choice. Get one of each. I’m thinking that a lot of our armed forces and LE would refuse to participate in a gun grab. If so, they would have 5.56/.223 to contribute to the cause. In that case, AR gets the nod. AR is supremely acccurate, but it must be maintained scrupulously. The responsible gun owner cleans regularly, so no problem. The AK is not as accurate at distance, but it was designed to operated and maintained by peasants more familiar with shovels than rifles. Thus, it will run even when filthy and grimy.
All real Americans are riflemen, or should be. So, I lean toward the AR or the M1A (7.62×51/.308). Marksmanship, alas, is a dwindling art for most of the country. This is not to say that the AK is not effective. It is. And, if cost is an issue, by all means get the AK. Bottom line? Buy a rifle and get thee to a firing range. Practice, practice, practice. Check into the Appleseed project. They are trying to “seed the nation with riflemen.” Good idea, IMO.
Barntender on November 13, 2008 at 1:12 PM
In defense of the AR…
If it jams the three most likely causes are:
1. A cheap magazine
2. A cheap box of ammo
3. A dirty weapon
If someone wants a works-every-time-no-matter-what weapon the you need to buy a Louisville Slugger. It needs little care other then keeping it dry.

I think you’re definitely right about the armed resistance, especially for non-gun folks like myself.
If a cop comes and asks for my gun and has a legal reason to do so, I’m not going to lie and say I lost it and I’m not going to resist either. I’m more like the chick from 1984 – do what you need to do to get along but keep your mind free.
I think the value in people like me buying guns, should it get really bad, is that A)The government will have to spend time rounding up our weapons to which gives resisters time to figure out what they are going to do and B) if the number of gun owners in the U.S. goes from 60 million to 70-80+ million, it might make the government think twice before they decide to try anything.
I think it’s never a bad idea to have one (with the training and know-how to care for and use it) for self protection, even if society doesn’t break down.

Why is it I have the sudden urge to go to the country tonight to exterminate the raccoons eating my deer corn…. All this gun talk is making me froggy.
Doppleganker on November 13, 2008 at 1:31 PM
Exactly – I’ve been in the military and worked next to the federal government long enough to know that if they try confiscation, it will be an utter fiasco. It will be a complete cluster handed down from up high and it will fail miserably in the implementation.
Jackasses like Obama and his worthless Democrat Congressmen have never spent one blasted day working in the trenches in government. They are stupid enough to think that their money and power can jumpstart a leviathan government into doing their bidding.
The non-military government does one thing well – it wastes money. Everything it does costs way more than anyone would possibly estimate and the results are always piss poor.
If Barack Obama wasn’t such an unqualfied, inexperienced dope he would already know that. He’s about to get an education.

I have no problem with gun control, AS IN HITTEN WHAT YOU AIM AT!
driver on November 13, 2008 at 1:35 PM
From the appleseed website:
FWIW, the effective range of the AK is about 300 meters. Beyond that, it’s ability to hit a man sized target is largely left to chance. With the AR you can stretch out to 600 meters. Step up to the M1A or even the vaunted Garand, and you can move out to the 1000 yard line. All of these distances are dependent on many factors like bullet weight, barrel length and, most of all, capability of the rifleman. Don’t expect to buy a rifle capable of 1000 yd hits and expect to accomplish such a feat. Heck, I’d do good to see the target at 1000 yds.
Barntender on November 13, 2008 at 1:48 PM
Great point. They now seem to be incapable of doing anything about 12 million illegal aliens. What are they going to do with 80 million gun owners? It would bankrupt them to try to build enough jails. Then of course you look are past gun confiscation plans, i.e. Austrailia, and see that 80 million owners may mean about 10,000 resisters.
MikeA on November 13, 2008 at 1:52 PM
Is there a rifle out there that fires the same ammo as the AR-15 but is a Russian make? The idea is to get the reliability and less maint. needed combined with a common ammo type.
Sapwolf on November 13, 2008 at 1:52 PM
It will be enforcement through fines and taxes. They don’t need jails. They just need a demand letter from the IRS.
Limerick on November 13, 2008 at 1:54 PM

Seriously, how much do you suggest?
Venusian Visitor on November 13, 2008 at 2:09 PM
You may be right. But I suspect the reaction may vary from region to region. New Englanders would almost certainly react as you suggest. Southerners are much less likely to go along. I have a hard time imagining Tennesseans and Texans willingly giving up their guns. And most would see registration as a precurser to confiscation. If Obama pushes, things might get out-of-hand. If he pushes really hard, his country might shrink by a few states.
My initial thought is to say I hope not. That didn’t go over too well last time. If he pushes too hard, hopefully Americans will be their usual ornery selves and push right back.

TheSitRep on November 13, 2008 at 2:32 PM
Speaking of cheap russian ammo, how many minutes after being sworn in will Obama ban ammo imports by executive order?
Mini14 on November 13, 2008 at 2:34 PM
7.
Doppleganker on November 13, 2008 at 2:45 PM
Main points that I’ve seen from here and other places in favor of either type of weapon:
AK-47
More reliable – less prone to jamming
Larger caliber – greater stopping power
Weapon and ammo cheaper
AR-15
Smaller caliber but higher muzzle velocity – less weight for a given amount of ammo and better accuracy over greater ranges
American designed and manufactured
I realize that you need to clean the weapon, not matter what – your life is depending on it. And you would want a weapon that is compatible with what the military has – no matter the eventuality.
Okay, another question to throw up on the wall – who makes the better quality versions of the AR – 15?
kelly Tejera on November 13, 2008 at 2:47 PM
I wrote that. Please know I cannot stand the thought of violence or the balkanization of the country. That said, groups of like-minded states seceding is far better than tyranny. We need to awaken our friends and neighbors. The pushback must begin now.
flyfisher on November 13, 2008 at 2:47 PM
I was simply pointing out what was possible with a good rifle. I realize that, in practice, shots are rarely taken at those ranges, except in competition. NRA Hi Power is 600 yds, I think. I know they have a 1000 yd match at Camp Perry every year.
You can get a gas piston upper for your AR. Best of both worlds. But, just the upper costs about the same as an entire rifle with standard gas impingement. If they were cheaper, I’d jump on one.
Dang, I love it when we have gun threads.
Barntender on November 13, 2008 at 2:53 PM
I spoke with a former member of the navy today. She said she thought that 50% or maybe more would side with the government in a gun grab. I asked why. She said that most of the people she ran into in the military were there for the college money and didn’t give a rat’s butt about their country or constitution. I wonder how accurate she is.

I just bought the Bersa Thunder T380DLX pistol for my wife last Monday. She’s been wanting a pistol ever since I bought my M&P .40 this spring. I was going to wait until Christmas, but I saw how sales were WAY up here in Georgia, and I thought I’d better get one now, in case the price goes up due to demand.
.
BTW, the Bersa is a great little Walther knockoff, and I was shooting 4 inch groupings from 15 yards.

Doppleganker on November 13, 2008 at 2:57 PM
You do. Just buy a quality lower (DPMS, Bushmaster, Armalite, many, many others) and slap it together with quality upper parts (model1sales, M&A Parts, many others).
You can have it all togher in about an hour. Less than that if you know someone who has done it before. It’s like playing with lego’s.
Barntender on November 13, 2008 at 3:03 PM
Here is my opinion of the good ones, and in no particular order: Rock River, Bushmaster, DPMS, Olympic Arms, Knight Armament, and JP Customs.
xtremeangler on November 13, 2008 at 3:04 PM
My choice, Bushmaster. There are only four major suppliers of lower receiver assemblies and all are comparable in quality. They private label for the majority of AR knockoffs. Again, my choice is Bushmaster simply because of taste, not substance.
A word of caution about ‘private’ sales. Be careful you know what you are getting. An AR with improper headspacing or improper barrel cleaning (crowning) can turn a damn good weapon into a heavy club. If you buy new you get it to specs right out of the box. No need to worry about how Joe Public treated it before you.

flyfisher on November 13, 2008 at 3:18 PM
Never fired one but one worrying point…it uses Russian 7.62 not NATO 7.62. Fine and dandy in an orderly world, quickly rare if crap hits the fan.
Limerick on November 13, 2008 at 3:20 PM
Good point. I just checked the net and you can order a tin of 440 Russian surplus rounds for $130, which seems cheap. If someone were to buy a Mosin, I suggest they simultaneously stock several thousand rounds for it.
flyfisher on November 13, 2008 at 3:28 PM
At gun shows it is common to find Russian made 5.56. The misfire rate is high compared to American ammo. No backup link, just one of those common topics over beer with other wannabe facist gun owners like myself. Take it for what it’s worth (about 1.5 cents on todays market).
Limerick on November 13, 2008 at 3:30 PM
Mosins fire 7.62×54Russian which is about the same ballistically as 30′06. It is cheap and plentiful now, but not if Obama bans ammo imports.

Doppleganker on November 13, 2008 at 3:45 PM
Avoid, unless you are into Sado-Masochism.
Those things kick like a mule. If you can shoot more than 20 rounds in one session you are a better man than me.
Sure they are cheap, but they are no fun to shoot.
I’m a .223 guy because recoil is light and its trajectory is so flat that you can use the same aim point out to 300 meters (something that will result in a miss with an AK), so you can concentrate on aiming, rather than how badly your rifle is abusing you. Of course, this also means quicker follow-up shots too.
Although I’m seriously considering a 6.5 Grendel AR build or two….I’ve shot out to 1000 yards with my Ruger M77VLE bolt action rifle, but don’t like getting thumped by the .308 (which can be a savagly kicking essobee in a bolt gun).

I’ve been debating between .270 and a 30-06. I’ve got a Marlin 336 (30-30), but I want something I can count on beyond 150 yards.

Look into an AR chambered for the 6.5 Grendel cartridge.

270 is great, too. A 270 is just a 30-06 necked down to 0.277. It shoots a bit flatter and is king when it comes to mule deer.
There are quite a few calibers based off the 30-06:
35 Whelen- 0.358
30-06- 0.308
280- 0.284
270- 0.277
6.5-06- 0.264
25-06- 0.257
My favorite is the 25-06.

That is my dream gun. That or a 6.5 Creedmoore. Do you know of any other company making uppers other than Alexander Arms for the Grendel?

Yes, because the result of the election was a person who would outlaw the manufacture, sale, and ownership of many of these guns. He indicated as such numerous times.
Try again, douchepuddle.

Actually, that’s what inspired me. I haven’t fired a weapon since 1971 when I left the military. The arrogant and elitist comment Obama made about “people [read: white trash] clinging to guns and religion” was the last straw. I never felt the need to have a firearm available for defense before, but America has become a powderkeg over the last six months and I need to be able to protect my family. So after the primaries I bought a rifle virtually identical to the one I trained on, and I’m going to fire as many rounds as it takes to reacquire my former skill and, if possible, add to it. I want to hit what I can see.
It didn’t hurt that an M1A with a bayonet lug and 20-round magazine (thanks pseudonominus) had formerly been banned as an assault weapon, and will probably be banned again shortly in the current political climate. I bet there are tens of thousands of people in my situation who did exactly the same thing, for the same reasons.

Speaking of which, educate yourselves on proper terminology:

Did that already, thanks.
Whew. This is a tough house.

I want to pick a good caliber that stops the assailant but doesnt knock me backwards doing it.
