Surprise: Gun sales through the roof since election

The LA Times piece is even more vivid than the clip. What’s the problem? Can’t a guy flip-flop egregiously on a watershed Second Amendment case in the middle of a campaign without people questioning whether he’s serious about gun rights?
At this rate, The One might end up being the best friend the NRA ever had. Exit question: Will the Rahm Emanuel Civil Defense Corps be lending a hand in gun “registration” enforcement, or will we be leaving that to the pros?

You invest in your education. You invest in your home. You invest in the market. Invest in your freedom.
As others have said, it isn’t that you will use it, it is the fact that you possess it, that will keep the government out of your closet.
Right now a Bushmaster M4A3 is between $950 and $1250, depending on vendor. I would expect the same weapon to be $3000 to $4000 by summer. Maybe more.

Anyone else notice that dude from Brady say “President Obama”? It’s not 20 January yet.
It’s anybodies guess how this will play out, if it does at all, but hypothetically it seems to me that while Obama’s domestic military force could make the rounds in our schools asking children whether their parents have any guns in the house
Any suggestions on how to strike a balance between creating a gun-friendly mentality in a growing child (I have a five year old) and dealing with what you just mentioned?

In The Federalist #29, Alexander Hamilton wrote, “if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens.”

$150 with a box of 9mm shells. It works great. I’m convinced it will stop anybody stupid enough to break into my house.
They will NEVER take it away from me. Hey… things happen. It could get stolen. “Sorry Mr. Civilian force man… somebody stole that handgun that was registered to me. Maybe you can find them and get the gun from them” he said with a smart-assed grin on his face.

Mojave Mark on November 12, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Stick to basics. A 9mm, .40cal or .357. Ammo if plentiful (right now) and most all modern handguns have drop safety features.
1911 .45s are sweet (if tuned) but not for a first gun.
Revolvers cost as much as a semi-auto. Six/Seven shots vs fifteen/sixteen. You can’t go wrong with more shots.

sharrukin on November 12, 2008 at 10:07 PM
This increase in sales is no exaggeration. I had a few minutes to burn before I went to work the other day so I stopped in a gun store which is on the way. The place is excessively expensive but I just wanted to look around and see what was on sale wondering if a sale might make a box or two of ammo semi-affordable from this place. I walked in and not only were there quite a few people in there but the gun racks were half empty. Also, I saw a news crew pulling away as I walked in so I’m assuming a local network was doing a similar story on the increase in sales.

I don’t have kids myself so I’ll let others respond in regard to safety training.
To the matter of teaching your children not to tell the nice people visiting their schools about your guns, I would suggest stressing the history of our nation and the importance of freedom and liberty and why the 2nd amendment is crucial to that, combined with the fact that the enemies of freedom will need to take away our firearms in order to fully realize their goals, “and they’ll tell you with a comforting smile on their face that your parents are sick and need Obama’s help.”
So if anybody at school asks if there’s any guns in our home, say, “Heck NO! Guns are EVIL and my parents LOVE Obama!“

Depends on your budget. Most will say Glock, Glock, Glock. If you go that route, I suggest the Glock 17. One of the best handguns in the world. Runs about 600 new, although there are tons of used ones you can get ahold of for 450-500.
Myself, I didn’t have a lot to spend. I got a Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact. 13 in the magazine, ideal size for concealed carry if you should wish to do so, and from the engineers of Beretta. Fantastic little piece for 325.
More great ones:
Sig Sauer
Beretta 92 or PX4 Storm
Browning Hi-Power
Ruger P90 series
My personal but unaffordable favorite: Heckler and Koch USP
Plenty of choices. Just stay the hell away from Hi-Point. Ugly as sin, cheap as hell, and worth what you paid(little to nothing).

In Canada we had the gun registry which required all Canadians to register their firearms. Gun stores began selling ‘Rock Proof Piping’. Allan Rock being the minister in charge of the gun registry at the time. The point was that if they come to search your house you can claim you have no firearms.
Thankfully we have a Conservative government now and for now that threat seems to have receded.

Many believe someday a government agents will show up and search their property for guns. During Katrina they went door to door and took all the guns, so it isn’t an unreasonable fear. I don’t believe they searched homes for guns, but they did take those citizens admitted owning.

Sorry… Itchy trigger finger I guess. Good luck jumping through the hoops in California. In Massachusetts whether you get a permit or a license-to-carry is up to your local chief. Mine stipulates all the usual fees, forms, ETC., but also the following requirement: “Notarized letters of recomendation from three (3) persons of good character, excluding relatives.” How then, I wrote to my chief, is the Second Amendment an individual right as per the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in ‘District of Columbia v. Heller’ if it requires the mandatory involvement of three other private citizens in order for me to exercise it? Dead silence so far…

I have a 12 gauge, but I bought a .410 for home defense that both my wife and my oldest daughter find less intimidating. I keep it loaded with triple ought buckshot.
I decided to get the .410 for them after reading this:
As women and older children could be using this home defense shotgun, bulk, weight, recoil and noise are definitely factors to consider. Thus, a .410 bore shotgun is a great choice. A 3 inch .410 shot shell fires 3/4 ounce of shot at 1100 feet per second, resulting in approximately 800 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle, and a 2 ½” .410 with ½ ounce of shot produces approximately 600 foot pounds at the muzzle. The delivered energy at the defense ranges considered here are greater than a .357 Magnum revolver cartridge, but the longer barrel and greater weight of the shotgun results in less than half the noise and recoil. More important, the shot pattern is about 8 inches in diameter at 20 feet (full choke), and does not generally penetrate a wall, whereas a .357 Mag bullet pierces walls easily…and unintended victims on the other side.
flyfisher on November 12, 2008 at 10:40 PM

roux on November 12, 2008 at 10:43 PM
I’m not a big shotgun fan myself but there is a lot to be said for the fact that the round will generally not penetrate walls and doors. I’ve never really given any thought to a .410 for home defense but I think you make a good weapon for the wife and daughters.

Thats KOOL Thats Cool
driver on November 12, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Nothing wrong with a .410. Nothing at all.
Again, my point to people here is that the gun itself is nothing. It gives you no power. The power comes from you, the citizen, exercising you RIGHT to a weapon. Without that right you can do what? Protest in the street? Turn over a car or two? Then what? You have to run for cover when GOVERNMENT LEAD heads your direction. Believe me, the government will be a whole lot more levelheaded if they know you haven’t thrown your weapon in a smelter.

doubleplusundead on November 12, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Now I have to add my meager advice to those who want a first time home defense weapon.
first choice: a 12 gauge shotgun with 22″ barrel and tactical ammo. The short barrel length for turning in cramped quarters like hallways and doorways, and the tactical ammo because, as much as the name makes one think it more powerful, it is actually less so. It has plenty of takedown power, especially at close range, but is less likely to have killing power if you miss and blow a hole in the drywall of your house.
After all, you are trying to protect your loved ones, not maim them.
Second choice: Now remember, this is for home defence, and if you are only going to buy one firearm, ignore the semi-automatics and get a revolver. Seriously. I would recommend a .357 magnum, because you can practice with .38 ammunition, which is a hell of a lot cheaper. And please, use hollow point ammo, because it breaks up on impact, as I mentioned before, when you miss and start blowing holes in your walls, less impact force on the other side of the wall.
Why no semi-auto? Because a revolver NEVER jams. Pull the trigger and it goes click? Pull it again, it goes Boom!
If your semi-auto jams when you need it most, you have a very expensive rock.
OneEyedJack on November 12, 2008 at 10:45 PM

Do you mean tell you kid you don’t have a gun? I would be honest about the issue so that, even with safety training, they aren’t surprised if they find it someday. If our concerns about Obama actually come to fruition and you want to take the other tact you can always tell your kid(s) you got rid of it or something.
Besides, if Obama turns out as bad as some fear he might, (which isn’t a certainty), kids are going to have to learn to lie to the authorities for other reason besides gun’s anyway, so I would concentrate on teaching them why lying in such circumstances is actually their patriotic duty.
