Surprise: Gun sales through the roof since election

posted at 9:00 pm on November 12, 2008 by Allahpundit

The LA Times piece is even more vivid than the clip. What’s the problem? Can’t a guy flip-flop egregiously on a watershed Second Amendment case in the middle of a campaign without people questioning whether he’s serious about gun rights?

At this rate, The One might end up being the best friend the NRA ever had. Exit question: Will the Rahm Emanuel Civil Defense Corps be lending a hand in gun “registration” enforcement, or will we be leaving that to the pros?

I imagine it is. Both among conservative Catholics and Evangelicals and other conservative Christians as well as Obama supporting black churches. In fact, I’d bet money on it. Plus with the economic downturn thrown in expect to see huge church attendance for Christmas.

What if the Rahm Emanuel Civil Defense Corps is later known as a militia?

Not to get all Ronulan on everyone, but could this be an attempt to sidestep the 2nd amendment by creating a “militia” who would be protected by the 2nd amendment while “civilians” would not?

Instapundit posted a strange poll question:

If you knew Barack Obama supported a plan to place a 75% excise tax on the sale of firearms – where a $500 rifle would now cost $875 with tax, would that have made you…
More likely to vote for Obama
Less likely to vote for Obama

Who asked the Q is unknown but it could be indication of what’s coming in the future.

Heh,

I actually went and bought a shotgun on election day.

3 months ago I stopped renting an apt and purchased a home.

Because of my home purchase I always planned to buy a better home defense weapon then my .45.

After pouring money into my home for 3 months, election day was a good day to buy a shotgun because I had it off and needed a better home defense weapon then my pistol.

The Yelling Box on November 12, 2008 at 9:13 PM

AR’s and AR Hi-Cap Mags are selling like hot cakes right now (the most popular magazines are out of stock and backordered everywhere). It’s worse than a bank run around here. Within 3 days of the election, one local gun store had sold every AR-15 in stock.

dugan on November 12, 2008 at 9:13 PM

Earlier today I talked to a quiet and mild-mannered Southern man who is not given to extremism. He told me he plans on buying an AR-15 so he is prepared for Obama’s gun-grabbing brownshirts.

I don’t believe these polls that say 75% of Americans believe Obama will do a good job. A big percentage of the population is spooked by this man in a manner I’ve never seen.

My wife bought an H&K 9mm USP Compact last week.

So, yeah, my family is doing its part.

Funny Note: My youngest daughter (age 6) wanted me to take her out for a Daddy-Daughter Day. She got to pick whatever she wanted to do. She wanted Daddy to teach her to shoot. Then she wanted to go to Hooters and watch football.

Man, it just doesn’t get much better than that.

It’s anybodies guess how this will play out, if it does at all, but hypothetically it seems to me that while Obama’s domestic military force could make the rounds in our schools asking children whether their parents have any guns in the house, they’re main role will probably come later during the confiscation phase. Not only will there be millions of homes to be searched and people detained, there will probably also be a civil war, which Obama will want to win.

This is where I continue to emphasize the need for real calm when people start freaking out about “civilian corps”.

Always a good suggestion, but I wouldn’t bury them in your yard. That’s the first place they’ll look (after your house) after you tell them that, gosh darn it, someone broke into your house and stole your guns and you just didn’t get around to reporting it. Better to bury them somewhere far from home, in a remote location that you can still access if the country really heads south.

MadisonConservative on November 12, 2008 at 9:27 PM

From the NRA-Institute for Legislative Action:

(This was written last Friday).

After months of telling the American people that he supports the Second Amendment, and only hours after being declared the president-elect, the Obama transition team website announced an agenda taken straight from the anti-gun lobby–four initiatives designed to ban guns and drive law-abiding firearm manufacturers and dealers out of business:

“Making the expired federal assault weapons ban permanent.” Perhaps no other firearm issue has been more dishonestly portrayed by gun prohibitionists. Notwithstanding their predictions that the ban’s expiration in 2004 would bring about the end of civilization, for the last four years the nation’s murder rate has been lower than anytime since the mid-1960s…

“Repeal the Tiahrt Amendment.” The amendment–endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police–prohibits the release of federal firearm tracing information to anyone other than a law enforcement agency conducting a bona fide criminal investigation…

“Closing the gun show loophole.” There is no “loophole.” Under federal law, a firearm dealer must conduct a background check on anyone to whom he sells a gun, regardless of where the sale takes place. A person who is not a dealer may sell a gun from his personal collection without conducting a check…

“Making guns in this country childproof.” “Childproof” is a codeword for a variety of schemes designed to prevent the sale of firearms by imposing impossible or highly expensive design requirements, such as biometric shooter-identification systems.

What I find interesting about the MSLSD video is that the opening pic is of “assault” weapons. That’s sure to get everyone all spun up.

I am a concealed carry permit holder and just recently added four new rifles to my collection. I did so not because I am worried about instability, although that is to be considered, but because I wanted to get them BEFORE Obama has a chance to rewrite the Second Amendment to his own image and likeness.

I do not trust our President-elect. I will not reach across the aisle, I will not learn to live with it. I will not support him or the liberal socialism he represents. I will, however, do my utmost, in concert with my local and state elected officials and within the constraints of election rules and regulations, to ensure that he only serves one term as President, and that his liberal horsemen of the apocalypse, i.e., Reid, Pelosi, Frank, etc., do as little damage to our country and our way of life as possible.

(Preview is playing tricks on me, so not sure this will show up as a link)

I’ll be doing my American duty in helping increase those gun sales.

But what’s the alternative to burying in the yard…frozen ground, ya know?

There’s a range close by. Parking lot packed.

I said I think I will go and raid the shelf of the G-18 “like” 33 round mags at my local store. I think they are for a G-19 but not really sure since I don’t own a firearm that works with them.

Do so. As I recall, those suckers regularly went for more than 200 bucks during the AWB.

I would be VERY curious to see the racial demographics of the gun buying explosion. Something tells me it’s similar to the racial breakdown of southwest Ohio.

This is ODS to the max. Look no one is fooled. We progressives know the REAL reason gun sales are going up. Why don’t we just get honest with each other, shall we?

”””’
I can’t believe I’m going to reply to another paid basement blogger from the one…

You might want to check your own replies to other comments about people and guns on these boards death, before acting like we have not said all along that we were buying guns to protect ourselves from the coming onslaught of the ones lil’ neighborhood soldiers. The report came from the ones own private propaganda service, nbc, so if you find fault in anything why not go to their boards and whine for lack of honest reporting on the topic?

I was surprised to find, since having children, that when you go to a pediatrician, one of the questions on the little questionnaire that they make you fill out is: do you have any firearms in your home? We always leave that part blank.

Weight of Glory on November 12, 2008 at 9:22 PM

Did they also ask if you had a swimming pool? A pool is far more likely to kill or seriously injure a child than a gun is.

Does anyone thing Shep Smith will report what is happening on the ground now that BO has been elected?

swami on November 12, 2008 at 9:50 PM

I’ve been planning to get one, but I’m not sure which guns I should focus my research on.

Any recommendations for a 5’2″, 115lbs girl? I’ve got limited experience with glocks (mostly 38 special ammo some bigger), a revolver (.38 again) and a 12-guage shotgun.
