Fred to challenge Steele for RNC chair?

I like it, but Steele embodies “change” a lot more than Fred does and Change is, after all, the order of the day.
“I’m extremely excited that he’s considering it,” said Scooter Clippard, a Middle Tennessee businessman who spearheaded national fundraising for the Thompson and McCain campaigns. “It’s time for a change. Fred Thompson would be the absolute best person to articulate that message for the party.”
Thompson’s appeal, his supporters say, is that he has no future presidential ambitions for himself — only for his party. The former actor is also an able communicator — once famously described as a “southern-fried Reagan” — in a party sorely in need of a new message and a new direction.
“The party’s going to be looking for a messenger. Here’s a guy who’s looking toward the future of the country, not looking to pad his resume,” former Thompson campaign staffer Bob Davis of Nashville said…
Thompson has not said anything about the RNC chairmanship publicly, but the prospect has his supporters intrigued. Even former Republican presidential nominee John McCain is in on the speculation.
Whether he’s really considering this or whether it’s his fans trying to draft him by building buzz — not unlike how he ended up running for president — I leave for you to judge. One’s preference for him, Steele, or Gingrich depends on what one thinks the GOP most desperately needs: A return to traditional conservatism, an expansion of the party’s base, or an infusion of new policy ideas, whether those ideas are especially sound or not. (Notably absent: An emphasis on managerial competence.) That’s not to suggest that any of the three couldn’t pull off more than one of the above, but we’re talking symbolism and priorities here. One possible strike against Fred: The party’s now so identified with the south that RNC members might actually consider it a liability to reinforce that impression with a chairman as overtly southern as Thompson. One possible strike for Fred: Turns out Michael Steele’s in no hurry to overturn Roe v. Wade, per his 2006 appearance on Meet the Press.
Maybe it’s as simple as asking which one you’d most like to see on TV over the next four years. They’ll all be on Hannity’s show regularly no matter what; one will simply have a little more authority than the others. Exit advice to the eventual winner: Try to avoid implicit comparisons between the opposition and South Africa’s apartheid regime.

Could be Fred sending out feelers as well. Again I have problems with Steele in that he has already been in the RNC since Jan 2007 and is part of the group that lead us to defeat.

So Fred will bring the same get up and go to the RNC chair that he brought to the Presidential campaign?

Fred!-power.
Steele is nothing great, I’d rather have Fred! or Newton.

What exactly does the RNC do exactly?
I want to hear some ideas of what these people are going to do instead of just listing a name.
Ar we going to do anything to recruit unregistered conservative voter or at least see how many exist?
Are we going to field and fund canadates everywhere there is an election?
You can’t win if you don’t play

I’m real curious what they did in 2008.
Mark pryor my senator from Arkansas ran for reelection in 2008 unopposed except for a green party canadate.

He excites a thin section of the base — apparently the GOP blogosphere — but otherwise didn’t even make it close to the GOP nomination. He had a laid back, relaxed campaign style that really didn’t work so well. We need a new, fresh face that will be able to draw people to the party and fire up the base.

Speedwagon82 on November 12, 2008 at 1:33 PM
Howard Dean wasnt a great organizer (Witness his Presidentual run) but he picked good people for key positions.
Fred would be great as the face of the GOP in confronting Obama. Can you see either Steele pushing Obama very hard ? Or Newt being able to confront Obama without being shrill ?
The organizers can be placed lower down in the establishment.
William Amos on November 12, 2008 at 1:33 PM
At least I do know about Fred. That is a tough choice. Steele is younger, hopefully a fighter. Fred is great. He was just to laid back during the election. Kind of reminded me of my favorite Cartoon Character. Deputy Dog. Not meaning it as a put down. Both are admired.
sheebe on November 12, 2008 at 1:33 PM
I hope so. I think Steele is a nice guy, but I think he is more moderate then the avg R thinks he is. Fred would be good.
Spirit of 1776 on November 12, 2008 at 1:34 PM
This is what’s maddening. We have talent, we just don’t have them where they’re needed.
I don’t see anyone rounding up the party leaders, and their natural allies and hammering out an approach to take back the country.
Fred should be the spokesman. Newt can be the idea man, but we need someone to crack the whip. Someone with organizational experience.

journeyscarab on November 12, 2008 at 1:35 PM
How about Jeri? :-)
I’ve seen her as a commentator on Fox and she knows her stuff. And the libs would dispise her for many of the same reasons they hate Governor Palin. It’d be great!
Fred can stay home and take care of the kids.

I have always liked Michael Steele, but anything less than steely resolve to see Roe overturned will push evangelicals even further away.
Fred!

Which Fred are we talking about? The Fred who unfortunately was more than lackluster during the primaries, or the attack dog Fred that re-emerged during the general election?
If it is to be Fred, I hope it is the latter.

I have concerns as well about posting Steele in the GOP leadership. The RNC Chair will be the leading spokesman for the GOP during the Obama years. That means he will have to confront Obama on all the issues.
The first time Steele tries to confront Obama on any issue the left will grossly and unfairly label Steele as “Uncle Tom Steele”. That would be both unfair and unfortunate but knowing the left its a very good possiblity.
Id hate for Mr Steele to be smeared simply because of his race but any minority GOPer faces that possibility. The question is does Steele have the fortitude to rise above that or would he pull his punches to appear conciliatory towards Obama ?
William Amos on November 12, 2008 at 1:41 PM
Wait … I thought that doesn’t matter any more?
Jaibones on November 12, 2008 at 1:41 PM
And we need an RNC head who understands the need to use the internet as a fundraising tool, to build grassroots, and get people excited. Thompson was a lazy campaigner who excited just a small segment of base that already liked him before he got into campaign mode.
amerpundit on November 12, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Fred Thompson was my top choice for the Republican nomination, and I only switched to Romney when Thompson turned out to be such a dud in the campaign. I love his stand on Federalism and I think he would be great as RNC chair. I also think he’s great in Law & Order and that ESPN commercial with Charles Barkley. :) Oh, and Hunt for Red October.

Ask yourself one question, should the Republican Party move to the center/left (Steele) or the conservative/right (Fred).
I can’t think of a better “new beginning” for the Party than a Fred/Mitt co-chairmanship.
AP should put up a poll.
ChrisM on November 12, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Although I am still enamored with teh Fred, Steele would most likely be better at the job. As for Roe v. Wade ever being overturned…it ain’t gonna happen. Ever. Much as I’d love to see it overturned.

In order to win, the party needs to return to the values of the party of Reagan. After Barry gets through, people will be aching for these values. The public will reject a second left-leaning party.
Who ever will steer the party back to these values is the correct choice.

Fred was entirely loyal, and didn’t let up. One of the few Republicans who didn’t fawn over Obama at some point just to seem moderate.
Best criteria yet….He doesn’t have a secret crush on any of the Dems.

I am totally against Michael Steele. He’s a mush mouth and there isn’t a camera he doesn’t love to rush in front of. There’s just something about him. I like Fred, but he’s a little too laid back. His wife, Jeri, is interesting and has the same values. I say we draft either Mark Levin or Rush (tongue in cheek, because they’d never do it, but we need somebody like that can articulate true conservatism).
My first pick is still… Tom Delay.

OT: Everybody go to http://www.blogtext.org/naturalborncitizen/
The NJ case to make the Sec of State certify the eligibility of the candidates as per state law is being sabotaged by Stay Clerk, Danny Bickel. He mislabeled the case so it won’t be sent to Justice Clarece Thomas.
We need to write to Justice Thomas and Chief Justice Roberts ASAP. PLEASE do this. The Constitutional definition of “natural-born” as per US v Rhodes is a person who has never owed allegiance to another country. Has nothing to do with Obama’s birth certificate. Has everything to do with his dual citizenship.
PLEASE, PLEASE go to that site and then write. My letters are in the mail right now.

No! He’s proven that he’s too lazy.
Before flaming me, consider how little effort he put into his presidential campaign. He’s a great speaker, a pretty good conservative, got a beautiful wife, but no fire in his belly. We need fire-breathers now, not laissez-faire attitudes.

Fred — Michael — Fred — Michael — oh, this is just too hard! I love them both. Could we get the two of them plus Newt at the top and have it be an oligarchy?

A bunch of bull!
People are gonna run skeered of the possibility that someone may unfairly label Steele as an “Uncle Tom” as the reason not to have Steele as RNC char? That’s mind-blowing…dumb.
How about say, “I don’t like Steel for RNC chair” and be done with that instead of bringing up the “Uncle Tom” scenario nonsense?
Kokonut on November 12, 2008 at 2:03 PM
Agreed. He’s also incredibly boring and painful to listen too on occasion. He’s great on issues, but it’s not a good role for him.

Fred? is the laziest man in America. The thought of him “working” is laughable.
Vernon Hardapple on November 12, 2008 at 2:05 PM
I said I dont like Steele as RNC chair. But that doesnt mean it will not happen. Do I want it to happen ? No. Do I think it might happen ? yes. The left has always mistreated conservative minorities and has shown no sign it would give any black conservative any breaks.
I am simply pointing out a fact. Its a shame that is the way it is but its still the truth. The left has always been unhinged on this subject.
William Amos on November 12, 2008 at 2:07 PM
I think the RNC needs to reach out to minorities more, via concerted and strategic efforts. (They’ve really sucked at this.) I live in a predominantly Hispanic area, right next to a predominantly African-American area. Too many people here do not know what any candidate stands for.
It makes me ill.
