“Fantasy” Cabinet: Gore as Climate Czar, Powell at Education?

posted at 9:10 am on November 12, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

US News has an org chart that supposedly floated out of the Obama transition team, showing the short list for each of the Cabinet-level positions in the incoming administration.  The above-the-fold news comes from the inclusion of Al Gore as climate-change czar and Caroline Kennedy as a potential UN Ambassador.  More interesting, though, are other key positions in the chart:

Obama transition team boss John Podesta threw open the curtains of his operation today to reporters, signaling that the president-elect wants to move quickly, but not hastily, to set up his government. In a pen and pad meeting with reporters—that means no cameras—Podesta, tieless, was at ease and confident as he proposed ethics rules governing the transition, promised top cabinet picks by December, and gabbed at length about the friendly and professional relationship he has with the Bush chief of staff, Josh Bolten. He made little news at the packed briefing but pledged that news was coming as he promised to conduct the most transparent transition in history. What we know: He has a budget of $12 million, $5.2 million in federal money with the rest from donors. Some 450 aides will be picking through résumés and policies as they create the government for the 44th president. …

Now the above transition flowchart. It is making the rounds in Washington tonight, though our source would not reveal the actual source of the document.

You can see the names clearer in the PDF version, as well as get the background on each of the listed candidates.  Some of these names will garner little more than a shrug, but a few raise serious questions:

  • Al Gore as climate-change “czar”: Why does this need a “czar”, the term used in this org chart?  Wouldn’t this be the responsibility of the Department of Energy?  Both Republican and Democratic presidents have used “czars” for various issues like energy, the drug war, and so on, and all have had the same thing in common: they never work.  Gore himself is no surprise as a selection, but Congress should insist he give up his interest in his carbon-trading firm.  That would be a big conflict of interest.
  • Colin Powell for the Department of Education?  He’s also shortlisted at the DoD, which makes a lot more sense, but what qualifications does Powell have to head Education?  Other than giving an endorsement to Obama, that is?  He’s also listed at State, but I’d be very, very surprised if he returned to that position.
  • Penny Pritzker at Commerce: So, Obama would nominate someone who cost taxpayers millions in a bank collapse to a Cabinet position, eh?  Why not exhume Charles Keating and put him on the Cabinet at Treasury as well?  I can’t wait to watch the confirmation hearings for a Pritzker nomination.
  • Eric Holder at Justice: Holder pushed the Marc Rich pardon through the DoJ as a Clinton-appointed deputy AG, bypassing the prosecutors despite procedures being in place to get their input on proposed pardons.  It turned into the biggest scandal in the last days of the Clinton administration, and prompted a Congressional investigation into potential payoffs for pardons.  So much for a higher ethical standard from an Obama administration.
  • Richard Clarke at Homeland Security: Actually, the line-up there looks decent, with Tim Roemer, Raymond Kelly, Bill Bratton, and James Lee Witt on the list.  Witt’s the weakest of the five, and Clarke was part of the team that failed pre-9/11.  Bratton might make the best selection, but I wonder if Obama might appoint Joe Lieberman instead to resolve the standoff in the Senate?
  • Artur Davis at Justice:  This is the same Artur Davis who took part in the intervention against OFHEO regulators in 2003 on behalf of Franklin Raines.  Can he be trusted to enforce the law?  Not after that performance.
  • Republican Watch: Chuck Hagel at State, Powell in the slots mentioned above, Robert Gates to potentially stay at Defense … and that’s it.  That’s exactly what I predicted.  I’m a little surprised to not see either Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins on this list, but maybe Obama thinks he can use them in the Senate.

It is funny that the definition of the word “change” has a different meaning after an election. Obama’s change is to revert back to the same list of losers that caused the problems we are having now. This is not political, it is a movement to bring the masses under control for their own good, whether they want it or not. This is insanity that the American electorate has brought on themselves.

The point of a “czar” is to coordinate activities across all departments, but the reason these fail in the past is that they are headed by politicians and not program managers. Put a general in a “czar” position and give him a clear mission and referential authority and watch the feathers fly.

Retreads from the Clinton era, buffonish losers like Kerry and Gore and people who have actively brought down the housing market…where’s the change for America in that?

Haunchie on November 12, 2008 at 9:32 AM

The good news is: Americans won’t stand for all of this “carbon control” stuff after it continues bankrupting just about every business imaginable. Think of all the crap that Ethanol mandates have done, and multiply that by 10.

And since the climate is controlled by the Sun, I am praying to the Egyptian Sun God for the next Ice Age to come really, really soon. Not a major one, just one that lasts 50 years or so, so that people can come to their senses and never trust eco-marxists ever again.

Colin Powell founded and chairs America’s Promise Alliance, a bipartisan nonprofit organization that promotes better education, reducing dropouts, better health, and opportunity for disadvantaged kids. It’s a fantastic organization that has cut through a lot of the education bureaucracy and helped millions of kids. A good friend of mine is one of its executives, and its CEO is Morton Kondracke’s wife.

Here is a video of Gen. Powell and his wife, Alma, talking about it.

No kidding! I thought Obama was all about infrastructure.

Ed Rendell wants the Transportation job badly. I’m surprised to not see his name on there.

A name to watch at HUD or in the new Urban Policy job in the White House is Sharon Sayles-Belton, former mayor of Minneapolis. She was probably going to be HUD Secretary if Al Gore had been elected in 2000.

rplat on November 12, 2008 at 10:21 AM

By the way, I am calling BS on that chart actually coming from the Obama transition office. For one thing, it has the current HUD Secretary wrong; it is Steve Preston, not Alphonso Jackson. No way Podesta makes that kind of mistake. Second, it describes Penny Pritzker as a “business tycoon” and I cannot imagine even an unofficial document using that kind of verbiage.

So I would not put much stock in this list, though many of the names have been floated elsewhere and are not surprising.

Jeff on November 12, 2008 at 10:40 AM

I don’t understand the need for a climate change czar…

Why not have a secretary of meterology also..?

What these idiots don’t realize is that AGW, and it’s new moniker-climate change-since the temperatures have started falling, is hardly a proven fact; indeed there is widespread difference of opinions on the mathematical models used by the UN and Hansen at NASA as well as the effect of solar activity.

This subject clearly needs more study before we go off, into the deep end, and ruin our economy in order to make some small group feel better about themselves. Reducuing pollution is a laudable and necessary endevour, but implement junk science on the basis of emotion isn’t…

Frequently, Al gore and the other AGW proponents talk about the consensus surrounding the notion of climate change. I’d remind them that only the social sciences work on consensus; the real, hard, sciences rely on repeatability as well as universal application of the principle when developing a new theory or discipline…

Despite mounting evidence of Global Cooling, Mr Al “Apocalyptic Global Warming” Gore, aka Fat Fraud Albert, still manages to keep his Flat Earth Luddite Piltdown Man cult following. Amazing.

Gore himself is no surprise as a selection, but Congress should insist he give up his interest in his carbon-trading firm.

Congress should also insist that he have electroshock treatment at least 3x a week. He should also be put on lithium and be given an enema.

Get ready to eat grass because that’s all you’ll have left after these fools implement all of their liberal giveaway programs.

If it comes to that I’ll be eating liberals. Though similarly low in protein, liberals have a much higher caloric content and require no more effort to snare. Sure, they need to be washed thoroughly and carefully for safe consumption and rot fast, but fresh supplies are always plentiful.

Al Gore?! Are you serial? What’s Man-Bear-Pig going to do other than drive a bio-degradable recycled wood product stake in the heart of our economy?

The Detroit News reports that both “Bush and Obama are signaling they may favor appointment of an auto czar to oversee the government’s efforts to funnel emergency assistance to automakers.”

And we all know a czar is gonna need a staff, and some offices, and some more staff, and some travel and entertainment expenses, and a bunch of office supplies, and… That’s gonna cost some money. Probably end up costing more than what the auto industry needs to start with.

John Kerry as Secretary of State? Is that some kind of bad joke?

Bonior and Gephardt, my stars.

And the Pritzker thing would be a delight to watch.
