Audio: The obligatory “Rahm Emanuel talks about compulsory civil defense service” clip

We already knew this, but it’s one thing to know it and another thing to hear it. I hope he presses Obama to implement it, as the weeks of fun we’ll have with “Imagine if Bush had proposed this” scenarios will amount to a new golden age for the right-wing blogosphere. Promise me this, Rahm: Not just barracks but uniforms, too.
Exit question: They don’t have enough Obama cultists willing, able, and sufficiently underemployed to volunteer? On second thought, that’d be an exceedingly bad idea, wouldn’t it?

The sad thing is, most kids my age would jump at the chance to join the boot camp in order to please Dear Leader.

Filibuster any proposal. This is just more evidence of the failure of the obama administration.

Well, it cam’t be compulsory without some punishment for failing to cooperate. Camps? I doubt that we’ll see that — at least for a decade or so — but refusal to issue/renew your passport? Removal from the mandatory health care program? Refusal of college loans, scholarships, etc? The has to be some kind of punishment or it isn’t compulsory.

johnsteele on November 12, 2008 at 4:35 PM
I’m going to get crucified for this, but I would not mind at all limiting the voter pool in this country in some way shape or form to public service. Whether that means bringing proof that you paid a positive dollar amount in taxes the year before (income, not SS or Medicare) or a honorable discharge / proof of active duty service or whatnot, I don’t care. But to me, this idea has potential.
I figure we ought to limit those who vote to those who have a vested interest in the nation. I think you should be able to vest universally, but vesting should not be free.
Not that I think this is what they have in mind.
k2aggie07 on November 12, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Watch out, Rahm. The Night of the Long Knives didn’t end well for a guy named Rohm… close!
rhodeymark on November 12, 2008 at 4:35 PM
I like 9mm. Sig Sauer is a great gun but expensive. You can get a good, solid gun from Remington, S&W, or Ruger to name a few.
DerKrieger on November 12, 2008 at 4:36 PM
I just gotta ask why? Why would we need thousands of 18-25 y/o trained in civil defense under the justification of an attack on our homeland? That is the reasoning I heard him say. Is Obama fixing to adopt Israel’s approach to protecting our citizens?
Texas Gal on November 12, 2008 at 4:36 PM
if they do something reasonable and we shouldn’t be freaking out, many in GOP and Bush probably like the idea.
its something a GOP president could never do
jp on November 12, 2008 at 4:37 PM
Accusations of ODS be damned: The leadership of the Democratic Party has been suborned by what can only be described as its far-left fringe. The only equivalent would be if Pat Buchanan and his AIPAC-baiting and concentration camp guard-defending buddies somehow managed to take over the GOP. Thinking the very worst of one’s opponents is normal, but it’s usually an exaggerated reaction. Witness that ‘Bush-Hitler’ vitriol for the last several years. However, based on all historical experience and example, thinking the worst of Marxist socialists is simply being pragmatic. So when Obama and Emanuel start talking about mandatory youth service in ambiguously described ‘civil defense’ units, we have a right to be worried, I think.
troyriser_gopftw on November 12, 2008 at 4:38 PM
So that they can get in the way of the first responders and National Guard that know what they are doing. Its the Democrat way.

Seriously, this is scary, but we could get some like minded conservatives in there to muck up the works if Obama is crazy enough to implement this.

Sapwolf on November 12, 2008 at 4:42 PM
The reaction all the Obamatrons will have to actually having to do something is the only good part of this. The downside is its a short ride from this to reporting on their neighbors — ask a Cuban.

progressoverpeace on November 12, 2008 at 4:44 PM
Exactly, those are private and state resources. He also said as did Obama that the military should not be the only ones responsible for national defense. And I can only think of one time in our history that the federal government order the US military to be deployed on the homeland.
As a matter of fact Gen Franks warned against that use of our military even in light of the 9/11 attack. That’s one reason the Coast Guard was moved to Homeland Security.

You know what is really frightening about this is not that it’s not an well thought out idea, but that it’s an example of the concept level of the entire hopeNchange platform. Now the other thing that is worrisome to me about this concept is not so much the details… but.. WHY? The why of WHY is this concept tied to the alternative to the military and focused on civil defense of the nation?
OTHO, I guess this clip sure shoots down that theory Obama was just talking about some kind of peace corp type force to be deployed into nation building activities as ambassadors of peace.

I’m reminded of a scene from Hogan’s Heroes when two majors from the Adolf Hitler division of the SS visit Klink in his office asking for donations to the Beautify Berchtesgaden fund.
When Klink begins to decline they interrupt him and show him a white book listing all of the names of those who’ve contributed and a black book with all of the names of those who didn’t. The white book is nearly full. The Black book is empty. Both books will be given to Hitler.
They tell Klink something like, “let it be said that Colonel Klink led all the rest.”

They really need to start this on younger folks. Leaving it until they are 18-25 is too late to completely indoctrinate all of them.
SOME young folks actually have actually developed their own thoughts and their own sense of right and wrong by the time they are 20 or so. The ones that have, will just cause trouble to their cadre, and may even lead others to rebel.
If they really want to make this work the way they want, they are going to have to start making them attend boot camp at 14-16 years of age.
And they should start even earlier with 8 year olds … an hour of after school indoctrination every week should get them in the right mood to be more pliant at teen boot camp…. Although I suppose that they could make it a daily part of the curriculum. Replace History class with Sing Praise to the Dear Leader and Inform on your Parents Hour.
