Audio: The obligatory “Rahm Emanuel talks about compulsory civil defense service” clip

We already knew this, but it’s one thing to know it and another thing to hear it. I hope he presses Obama to implement it, as the weeks of fun we’ll have with “Imagine if Bush had proposed this” scenarios will amount to a new golden age for the right-wing blogosphere. Promise me this, Rahm: Not just barracks but uniforms, too.
Exit question: They don’t have enough Obama cultists willing, able, and sufficiently underemployed to volunteer? On second thought, that’d be an exceedingly bad idea, wouldn’t it?

I dont think liberals are motivated enough to serve in something like this!
That would entail putting down the XBox controller, taking a shower and actually doing something!

A mandatory 3-month period during which every 18-25 year old shares a common experience to impress upon them what it means to be an American. Given the fair, objective, unpolitical and bias-free handling of ideology that currently exists in public schools, on college campuses and in the media, what could possibly go wrong?

I keep imagining a stadium filled with phalanxes of young men and women wearing gray uniforms and black berets, chanting Obama’s name. From what or whom, exactly, would they be defending us? Am I an alarmist to find all this talk about groups formed for community service and civil defense profoundly troubling? What are Obama and Emanuel thinking? Create a service tradition alternative to the conservative-leaning military? What?
troyriser_gopftw on November 12, 2008 at 4:12 PM
SMITH: I meant to ask you about the universal service piece of the plan. Can you tell me about it? Like, how is this going to work? Are people going to live in barracks?
EMANUEL: Universal Civil Defense Training…I think he had it at 18, but we were saying somewhere between the ages of 18 and 25, you will do three months of training. You can do it in your(inaudible). Some point in college you can do just that. There can be nothing wrong with all Americans having a joint similar experience of civil …what we call civil defense training or civil service…some sense of service to country in preparation, which will give people a sense of what it means to be an American. We propose three months. At the end of the day someone says it should be four more. I’m not going to sit here and hold it up.
SMITH: I mean it’s a lot more than the U.S. government asks of anybody right now.
EMANUEL: Guess what? We have a lot more challenges, so we are going to need a lot to do it.
SMITH: I mean I don’t mean to get hung up on the aesthetics of it, but like uniforms…is it like Europe…people go absent
EMANUEL: If you’re worried about going to have to do 50 jumping jacks, the answer is “yes.”
SMITH: Are you kinda shifting the “country-esque” Army bases in the Summers? I mean… I wonder how it’s going work. This is people’s experiences. It’s so abstract. Do you go nine to five in some course in a Red Cross building?
EMANUEL: The whole idea there is it will be worked on you can do it through your State-National guard could be the vehicle for that. The goal here (inaudible) to work on piece of legislation for ya’ and all that, but that’s one venue of doing it.
Smith commented on the NY Daily News blog about Emanuel’s reaction to his curiosity on the “universal service”:
We also talked a bit about his new book, The Plan, written with Bruce Reed, and particularly about his argument for instituting some kind of universal service, in the form of civil-defense training. He found my interest in whether there will be barracks more amusing than I’d anticipated.
The mainstream media continues to ignore this plan, which is not necessarily unusual for them. However, considering the amount of youth voters who lined up for Obama this election season, it is truly unfortunate they are the last ones to find out about this “requirement” of the new Obama administration. The audio is uploaded at Eyeblast.tv.

(Believe me, you don’t have to understand Ukrainian to get the ad – not NSFW, but you might not want to watch it in a straight-laced workplace.)
Oh wait – the ad is politically incorrect, isn’t it? The Obama variant won’t promise girls to the 18 year old recruits, but rather free carbon credits – that will bring them in. /sarc

Normally I’d agree Allah, but this is getting creepy. Obama himself talks of a civilian security force as powerful as the military, his goons set out to sue people and basically shut down outlets who criticized him, the media’s broadly unwilling to question him, critics of his are shouted down as racists, and now he has a Chief of Staff who wants Americans to undergo compulsory training.

God forbid people be very concerned about a charismatic leader with a large cult-like following in the middle of a major worldwide crisis. A leader with known radical, racist associations. It’s not like anything really bad has ever come out of similar conditions.

Pretending it couldn’t happen is exactly how it happened before. It is a very short ride from mandatory service to punishment for not agreeing. And it is an even shorter ride from punishment for not ‘going along with the leader’ to ‘changing your mind for you.’

For example, saying outright that Obama is a not-so-closeted Marxist socialist who maybe possibly might do what all Marxist socialists do once in power is a sure sign of creeping ODS. Who knows? Guys like David Brooks and Christopher Buckley might be right: if we close our eyes and wish it hard enough, maybe Obama will magically drift to the middle and govern from the center.
