Surprise: FEC plans to audit McCain’s campaign funds — but probably not Obama’s

Why would they want to audit Obama? The biggest fundraising operation in political history, infused with hundreds of millions of dollars from contributors whose names the campaign refuses to reveal, dependent upon a donation mechanism whose security measures were suspiciously and inexplicably disabled, and accused by reputable publications of having looked the other way at fraudulent donations that would have been detected immediately with cursory oversight.
Aside from that, I mean, why would they want to audit him?
The punchline? It’s because he’s rolling in dough that they’re less inclined to check him out.
Obama is expected to escape that level of scrutiny mostly because he declined an $84 million public grant for his campaign that automatically triggers an audit and because the sheer volume of cash he raised and spent minimizes the significance of his errors. Another factor: The FEC, which would have to vote to launch an audit, is prone to deadlocking on issues that inordinately impact one party or the other – like approving a messy and high-profile probe of a sitting president.
McCain, on the other hand, accepted the $84 million in taxpayer money, which not only barred him from raising or spending more – allowing Obama to fund many times more ads and ground operations – but also will keep his lawyers busy for a couple years explaining how every penny was spent…
[I]ronically, the historic volume of Obama’s small contributions, which may have made it tough for the campaign to weed out problem donations, may also help spare Obama an audit.
That’s because the byzantine formula the FEC staff uses to determine whether a campaign has engaged in “substantial” violations of federal election rules – the trigger to recommend an audit to commissioners – takes into account the size of the campaign’s coffers, according to David Mason, who served as a Republican appointee to the FEC until this year.
“So if a House campaign makes a $100,000 error, that’s huge and they’re likely to get audited,” he said. “If a campaign the size of the Obama campaign has a $100,000 error, then maybe not. It would depend on what the error is, obviously,” he said, explaining that mere accounting snafus are unlikely to prompt an audit. More serious and systemic problems, such as illegal contributions, result in campaigns getting tagged with more “audit points,” Mason explained. “If you get enough audit points, you get audited,” he said, adding “nobody outside the commission would know how many audit points the Obama campaign has.”
The RNC’s requested a full audit of The One’s operations, but unless I’ve misread the statute, it’ll take a vote of four of the five commissioners to trigger review; hence the reference in the blockquote to political deadlock. File this away with last month’s post on how Barry O drove a stake through the heart of public financing: Not only will the ‘Net make it easy for any future campaign to outraise the meager $84 million cap currently provided by law, but going private practically guarantees you’ll avoid the expense and hassle of an investigation and fines. And the more you cheat, the more you raise, the less “substantial” any single instance of cheating is and thus the lower the likelihood of an audit. Perverse incentives all around, with none of them to be corrected legislatively before 2012, at the very least.
Exit question: Wasn’t “transparency” one of the core planks of the new pope’s platform? What happened to that?

The FEC is looking at the McCain campaign because he took federal campaign funding would be my guess. The Obama campaign would have to be audited by a different type of accounting entity.

Why even have campaign finance rules??? This is Total BS!!!
Is there something we can do? There has to be something we can do. We saw there was obvious fraud with the screen shots and billing statements. This is making me ill, literally. I am sick to my stomach after reading that. After Obama got elected I kept saying that this fraud will come out. Everyone will see it when the FEC investigates.
What has happened to my country??? It isn’t the great nation I thought it was. It is corrupt, hypocritical, and full of shit!
This election has been truly enlightening. I realized as a white woman I don’t have equal rights in this country. The hanging of Palin (supposed Halloween display)was proof. Why didn’t the guys that did that to Palin(a white woman) get arrested? The same thing was done to Obama and the people responsible for it were arrested and charged with a hate crime. So it’s not a crime unless you are black.
My country isn’t the greatest nation on earth.

Just remember, an intrepid reporter at the Wall Street Journal did find out about Norman Hsu and all those shenanigans going on in Hillary’s campaign. The WSJ also carried the Whitewater story for months after Bill Clinton was elected. The WSJ is not exactly in the tank for Obama, nor is the Washington Times or the Chicago Tribune. Even the Philadelphia Inquirer has some good-government people who would at least pick up on a story about illegal fundraising (it ran numerous followup stories on Norman Hsu, and has been all over corruption among Pennsylvania Democrats.)
The fact is that Obama can’t be un-elected now, so there is no consequence to investigating his illegal fundraising, but a big upside if there is a real story there. So somebody will do it, even if the FEC doesn’t.
rockmom on November 11, 2008 at 2:45 PM
is there a possibility that we make too much of these stories? I hate to think that Obama is the devil, although his face makes my spine shiver.
i remember, for example, when I was a child, conservatives complained about how the auto industry seemed to be ignoring gas-efficiency technologies. suppressing.
what do we care, if Obama is arrogant enough to unleash these types of technologies on an unsuspecting oil industry? I would not be surprised if Stan Meyers hydrogen fuel technology is owned by the federal govt, as Meyers claimed.
I seriously think this “team” and all events look dire and worse. But, maybe, just maybe, we are missing the forest.

If we value “fair elections” in the United States, then this should get scrutiny. This is disgusting. It makes me really angry! If they deliberately ran a false contribution scheme and turned off the security measures in order to raise money, then that is criminal. But with this, he’s free to do the same thing in four years with no consequences, hm? Great job on campaign fincance reform there, McCain.
CP on November 11, 2008 at 2:54 PM
McCain is getting audited because he took public financing. Simple as that. After this year, NO ONE will take public financing, because it comes with so dam many controls and limits. Get outspent 3:1, and get audited for your trouble. A great system you came up with, there, Sen. McCain.

All too true. Because there is no organization. But there is something we here at HotAir can do – right here, right now – that represents solid action against what is unfolding in our nation.
Do you want to know the real reason why Obama’s financing won’t be looked into? Because the Democrat Ministry of Disinformation – aka, the US news media – will sink any such effort with a propaganda torpedo. The single biggest crime committed in this election cycle was the US news media’s shameless political activism for Democrats. And I for one, will no longer support their activities in any way, shape, or form.
I will not – under any circumstances – watch ABC, CBS, or NBC news. I will not – under any circumstances – purchase the newspapers of or visit the websites of the NYT, the Washington Post, or the LA Times. I will restrict my television news to Fox News and I will restrict my major newspaper news to the Wall St. Journal. And I will spread the word as much as I can in order to do as much damage to these shameless propaganda outlets as I possibly can.
Enough is enough.

Rockmom at 2:45>>>>>>
Obama is not the president-elect until the electoral college votes on Dec 15th.
New Jersey has a law that the secretary of state has to certify as eligible everyone on the ballot. A retired attorney there spoke to someone in the sec of state’s office who said that they had not verified either McCain or Obama as eligible. He has filed a lawsuit against the state of NJ, saying that as per state law both Obama and McCain were placed on the ballot illegally. The remedy for the lawsuit filer is for the sec of state to certify the eligibility of both candidates.
This suit doesn’t have the issue of standing. The Supreme Court is clearly the court to handle disputes involving a state government. And this was the strategic legal route that Bush’s lawyers took in Bush v Gore in 2000. The precedent to take the case in a timely fashion is there.
“Natural born” is defined in US v Rhodes as a matter of exclusive allegiance to the US. A person who has ever owed allegiance to a country other than the US is not “natural born”, regardless of whether they are a citizen at birth. And even FactCheck.org has admitted that Obama was a British subject because his father was a Kenyan citizen. Regardless of anything on his birth certificate, according to US v Rhodes, Obama is ineligible.
If he is found to be ineligible before Dec 15th his name will be removed from the ballot of the electoral college.
It’s not over ’til the fat lady sings, and she hasn’t sung yet.

George Soros certainly was quiet this election cycle, wasn’t he… Or was he?
And… If anyone can gather proof that Obama’s little gadgets were used to post in foreign blogs, chatrooms, and forums to raise funds for his campaign, it certainly woudl be interesting.
What would be even more interesting, if our media had any balls, would be to find out how much of Obama’s campaign was funded using stolen credit cards. People probably are cracking open their statements this month to find that $2300 charge to their account.
HOPE! CHANGE!
