I think Shep is suffering a bit of Stockholm Syndrome

Agreed. He’s due for an on-air meltdown.

pmanley on November 11, 2008 at 11:25 PM

What you have here is a feedback loop. MSM is not in the business of giving us honest reporting. They are in the business to make money for their corporation. So if spinning the news to the left gains more viewers thats the way they go.The truth has nothing to do with with reporting the news. All media has a bias or an agenda. This is nothing new.
Go back in history and look up how in earlier times the press pushed whatever agenda the publisher supported.
So don’t quit complaining about MSM but don’t complain to your friends and neighbors instead write a letter to the editor ,e-mail MSNBC and tell them they suck and your not going to watch any more. When they start losing market share and money they will change thier ways.
This does not apply to the New York Times they seem to be bent on suicide.

If the MSM did their job and reported the facts instead of running interference for The One, he’d still be a community organizer in Chicago.

The American people just elected the shadiest President in history because the MSM didn’t have the balls to report stories about Khalidi, Ayers, Wright, illegal campaign contributions, etc..

So when did journalism schools start teaching that the media was suppose to “reflect the mood of the nation”? Stupid me, I always thought it was about reporting the facts.

katablog.com on November 11, 2008 at 11:33 PM

Shepard Smith, who hosts a popular program on Fox News and received widespread praise for his work covering Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, also dodges questions about his sexual orientation.
Smith once chatted me up in a New York City gay piano bar, bought me drinks, and invited me back to his place. When I declined, he asked me to dinner the next night, another invitation I politely refused.

We sat at the bar chatting and drinking martinis until 3 a.m., our conversation interrupted only when he paused to belt out the lyrics to whatever showtune was being performed.

A guy who is not entirely honest about who he is can’t be taken too seriously.

Jim M. on November 11, 2008 at 11:33 PM

If we start turning him off the station will notice. We always have him on when preparing dinner. Guess it’s time to return to Vanna and the fortune wheel. That’s kinda scary too.

Ozark_sky on November 11, 2008 at 11:33 PM

It is true that the media did not lose the election for John McCain..he did a fine job on his own with a poorly run campaign and garbled message all by himself.

On the other hand, the media DID show a side of themselves that has been steadily emerging for years. They now feel safe enough to try and make the news themselves rather than just report it. It will not get better in the years to come and those of us that are not liberal will have to learn to beat them at their own game and use them to our advantage for a change.

Change..durn, is it just me or does anyone else HATE using that word right now?

SassyDarlin on November 11, 2008 at 11:34 PM

Shep is a frikkin idiot!! He considers himself the MSM? C’mon!! Fox News is not considered part of the MSM! It is despised by the MSM and liberal freaks. Shep’s head is stuck in the sand. Has he not been paying attention?

If the media actually had a shred of honesty in their reporting of the Fannie/Freddie mess then McCain would have won. Joe the Plumber, Sarah Palin, John Edwards, etc. – their handling bungling of those stories is just icing on the cake. Shep’s argument is the one that’s preposterous here. I liked him better when he was snarking about Hilton… and J-Lo.

OneGyT on November 11, 2008 at 11:40 PM

The American people just elected the shadiest President in history because the MSM didn’t have the balls to report stories about Khalidi, Ayers, Wright, illegal campaign contributions, etc..

pmanley on November 11, 2008 at 11:32 PM

You’re right, the American people did just that.

You’re also right in that the MSM did not step up to the plate fairly in their reporting..and yes, that is an understatement.

However, it’s also a fact that a lot of people that voted for BHO would have done it regardless of what was reported in the media. They were unwilling or unable to understand or care about mere things like facts and were determined to put him in office. For whatever reason, many of them were almost hyponotized by his aura and still are.

In six months we’ll see if they feel differently when the “change” they wanted to take hold with a wave of his magic wand isn’t immediately appearing.

SassyDarlin on November 11, 2008 at 11:45 PM

LOL. But he was serious, here. He was angry, even – though part of that was that he wanted to put himself in with the MSM, for some reason, which was the really funny part. I don’t think Shep’s audience is nearly as big as he thinks it is.

progressoverpeace on November 11, 2008 at 11:52 PM

Glen Beck should replace this guy. I would watch fox again if that happened.

goldeagle11 on November 11, 2008 at 11:54 PM

This confirms my impression that Shepard Smith was and is in the tank for the Big Zero and the no-hope and no-change policies he learned from Jimmy Carter. Who knows, we might even have another hostage crisis just for old times sake.

The list of good guys keeps dwindling. I think there’s something to be said for the notion that by catering to the left the media thinks they are going to get more viewers, listners, readers – but I very much doubt it will be the case. Just more left wing bs.

shmendrick on November 11, 2008 at 11:54 PM

By the way… I read an article that stated of over 60 college newspapers surveyed, Ole Miss was the only one to endorse McCain. The rest went for Obama.

behiker on November 11, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Heh. As a former college newspaper staffer who’s been around plenty of student newsrooms, I’d call that another ringing endorsement AGAINST Obama.

Sign of the Dollar on November 11, 2008 at 11:56 PM

Come on. Just say, “Shep, why did the media sit on the Obama ‘Energy Prices Skyrocket’ video? Why did they sit on the dinner with anti-Semites? They never looked into Obama’s past, but they gave Sarah Palin one excruciating colonoscopy. Please explain how these actions do not reflect a media heavily invested in one candidate of an election?”

Nethicus on November 12, 2008 at 12:09 AM

Hey Shep, the media BURIED the truth about the culpability of the Democratic Party and Obama himself in the housing crisis. McCain wins without the housing crisis. The media buried it. Frank, Dodd, Emanuel, Raines, Gorelick et al. They fuck*ng buried it. Now, you want to stake your claim to the middle on Fox, by all means but get off your high horse because you’re full of bleep.

AYNBLAND on November 12, 2008 at 12:13 AM

Shep may be a neodouche but he’s right about the point he so poorly makes – the election was not won by Obama because he had the media on his side.

SlimyBill on November 11, 2008 at 11:27 PM

disagree. Did McCain lose entirely due to the media? Of course not. there were lots of reasons, not just ONE.
The media was definitly one of the reasons.
Would Bush have the low approvals he has if the press ACTUALLY reported the Iraq successes with HALF of the gusto
as when Iraq is going in the dumper?

I think Shep is off on this. I like shep usually. But for him to deny that the media was NOT in the tank for obama is either incompetence on his part or just plain denial.
I’m more prone to say denial. The way that the press has so damaged itself in this election has got to put any REAL media types to either hide their heads in shame or hit a defensive crouch.
I think thats where sheppy is. But it makes him look stupid though. Really stupid.

Curious that these “journalists” always fail to mention that Bush also had the HIGHEST approval rating of any President in the history of modern polling.

And that’s when the War on the War on Terror began in earnest, with leaks coming from partisans Dems in the CIA and State Dept. They knew they needed to undermine Bush if they ever wanted to get back in power… and it worked, eventually.

What the? Let’s try that again!

No bias? OK, then, we must know what Obama’s qualifications are for being a candidate in the first place. And of course, we have his college transcripts, his medical records. The media did their jobs. Yes, we know who paid his tuition, his travel expenses to Pakistan and Africa, and how he could afford his McMansion in the Farrakhan/Ayers neighborhood.

All normal questions were investigated and answered by the unbiased media.

Time to tune out Shep.

lwssdd on November 12, 2008 at 12:58 AM

Someone should rub his nose in Harry Truman’s approval ratings … which were lower than Bush’s. Bush does not have the “lowest ratings since they have been recording them”. Truman does.

Jimmy Carter was at 34 percent at the end of his term. Nixon was at 24 percent. Harry Truman got to 22%. The last numbers I can find on Bush are from Rasmussen in September at 34 percent.

In my lifetime CARTER was the worst.president.ever.

crosspatch on November 12, 2008 at 1:04 AM

If the MSM had done their job and simply filled in the blanks on Obama’s background, associations and policies during the campaign he never would have run against McCain, Hillary would have beaten him in a walk.

Shep has a point though…Mccain had no message…bashing libs is not a message… saying “my friends, i know how to fix it” for x y & z is not a message…a lot in the media ARE in the tank for Obama…and the economy DID suck big time..and Bush’s ratings and disapproval WAS pathetically low…but is it not scapegoating to say that that was the case? I would say 90% of the people who voted for Mccain…like me, were Anti Obama votes..not Pro Mccain votes…I know almost no one her was happy with Mccain as the nominee until the Palin pick…so i would agree with Shep on that point…lets be a little objective here and not be as narrow minded and party driven as the libs are…

That’s some pretty weak logic by Shep. He thinks everyone in American just spontaneously began wondering about the parentage of Trig Palin? Or Sarah’s wardrobe? Or Joe the plumber’s taxes? He thinks the media spent an equal amount of time analyzing the Obama parodies on SNL? Or Obama’s health record? Or Obama’s children? Come on, Shep. You’re either oblivious to the world on which you report, or you’re a liar.

Ronnie on November 12, 2008 at 2:20 AM

To me this is or was, no different than when Clinton ran BOTH times for POTUS. We in Arkansas, we knew what Clinton was, and we tried to get our message out and there were no takers in the media.

The media during the Bush years have been quite the opposite. We have leakers in the State Department who give info to the NYT, and then we have sheer lies created out of whole cloth via CNN, NBC, CBS, and MSNBC. Little if any good news coming out of Iraq ever made headlines in the media. If it did, it was buried on the back pages, or was a brief blurb in the media.

Now we have the arrival of Obama, and many of us of independent minds went on searches on our own to find out just who this guy was, and would he be good for America. Wright, Ayers, Davis, Khalidi, Farrakhan, Pflegger, Rezko, and many more bad dudes were NOT what we wanted to have connected to our POTUS. Other than CNN and Fox, I do not think one other cable or broadcast tv show EVER mentioned any of these men with the significance in which the public deserved in making an informed decision about Obama. Shep can get all hoddy, toddy about being slammed for the truth, but it is what it is! Maybe Fox was not in the same category as all the other news networks, but it was clear to the PEOPLE watching the networks that indeed the MSMs were biased in their reporting. 65% or more thought so when polled. In fact, I believe Newsweek admitted they were biased. Oooops, there Shep goes again, going off all half cocked without knowing the facts. Did we not see this in the aftermath of Katrina? Me thinks Shep has an itchy trigger finger or something. Little too sensitive there. I half expected a manbag to come out and konk the guy on the head!

long_cat on November 12, 2008 at 2:30 AM

Tis a sad day when the political and military force without historical equal is dismantled and defunded in order to blindly support domestic placation. May entitlement and redistribution bolster the created definition of self worth and be called upon to defend the extinguished principles that once defined and denoted freedom. Somehow, the very values that define America have been compromised solely to accept the color of ones skin. (Wow he wears sunglasses)

Ahh, Shep. He’s as petty as he is provincial.

Can’t say I blame him – well, okay, yes I can – but I can see his point of view. His whole schtick is rooted in the perceived credibility of “news” reporters and he’s watching that rapidly slip away in a flood of unmasked and frequently comical bias.

Shep Smith, he fancies himself some kinda bastion, dontcha know. A heavily-pancaked, overly-mascaraed defender of journalistic integrity that never really existed, ‘cept in the mind of the self-obsessed UMiss sophomore he once was and always will be.

He deserves pity more than derision. Although, with this exchange, it’s clear he’s earned both.

S on November 12, 2008 at 4:15 AM

I read so many irrational, misleading and even false statemetns as “headlines” by the “media” in the last year to more than prove the media drove and drives public perception.

You get some writer or reporter somewhere who has issues about specific positions held by (in our contemporary times) President Bush and Administration, who then writes resentful, even damaging suggestions posed as assumptions, then some headline-writer adding their snarling assumptions to “prove” or “emphasis” the content, and what appears afterward is a standard AP or Reuters article about any number of political occurences, when and if it’s opposed by the Left.

I’d say, in my experience, the media most definitely has and continues to shape and mislead public perceptions.

I think back to the days as a very young child, watching the likes of who was posed to be grandfatherly Walter Cronkite presenting information, which, of course, I’d take to heart because, after all, it was Cronkite, grandfatherly, who wouldn’t rely on what he was saying…

Only to find out years later that Cronkite was a pro-Communist to essentially Communist in his politics; no way would that not be revealed in how and what he “reported” as to where he lent support, sympathy and criticism as he reported what.

I think many of us are shaped and modified in our perceptions by media figures, particularly the wire services that are used by nearly all other media as information sources. And broadcast hosts do a great deal to influence perspectives (I know I found Shep’s hysterical statements from the highway in flooded New Orleans to be affecting).

We can all argue and analyze specifics and concepts and all, but we are and remain, as human beings, largely influenced by emotion and tone, the “bright shiny objects” appeal. Which is what the Leftwing media understands, by the way, so they exploit that.

S on November 12, 2008 at 4:27 AM

Obamalama Deprogrammer on November 12, 2008 at 4:37 AM

Yeah, Shemp, the media’s refusal to do any substatial reporting on Obama, their refusal to ask him anything but softball questions or for clarification of some of his incredibly vague policy statements, their refusal to do anything at all to inform the public about some of his more questionable policy stances or even more questionable associates, ranging from shady to down right criminal had absolutely nothing to do with him winning this election[/sarc (for the sarcasim preception impaired)

Got news for ya Shemp, if a quarter of you douchebags had done your damn job, there’s no way in hell this dangerouly unqualified, incredibly naive, empty suit, who may very well be a Marxist, could’ve gotten elected President of The United States.

Mr. DiPaolo doesn’t blame the media for McCain losing the election. He says the media was in the tank for Obama. There is little doubt about that.

They simply never followed up on his questionable associations or covered his stumbles along the way as they would with a Republican candidate. Voter fraud, questionable campaign donations and his ACORN ties were completely ignored.

IT continues at the federal level since the FEC is going to investigate McCain’s donations – and they aren’t going to give Obama’s more than a cursory glance of approval.

I am stunned at the depths of this blind willingness to rush Obama into the White House at all costs. This reeks to high heaven – something is very, very wrong here.

Mr Purple on November 12, 2008 at 4:46 AM

Sheepherder Smith is an idiot on par with Keith Olberwoman. Isn’t it time to boycott Fox during Smith’s spew-fests? Maybe if Fox figures out that no one wants to hear Smith’s drivel, they will finally remove his smarmy buttox and the folks can watch someone decent. I can’t wait for Glenn Beck! I personally won’t watch Fox when the Narcissist, Smith or mealy-mouthed Jerry Rivers has air time. If I want to watch idiots, I’ll unblock PMSNBC from my cable.

nelsonknows on November 12, 2008 at 4:49 AM

Preposterous? I guess that is why advertisers never buy ads on the MEDIA.

The media is made up of two kinds of people inane imbeciles and hard core commies.

TheSitRep on November 12, 2008 at 4:52 AM

Nice to know where he’s coming from. Clueless. Another reason I don’t watch TV.

paul1149 on November 12, 2008 at 4:53 AM

Shep Smith is one of the reasons I don’t watch FOX. He and O’Reilly are left-wing nuts and I get tired of listening to their drivel

Hal-9000 on November 12, 2008 at 5:04 AM

I haven’t turned on Fox News since the election. Really no TV news. Sick of all of them. Where was Fox with Fred. Where was Fox with Romney? They blew this election because they wanted to be liked by the other networks.

Zimvg on November 12, 2008 at 5:22 AM

That’s exactly what someone acts like, when the GERBIL gets stuck.
Time to head back to Fort Myers/Key West.

nimrod on November 12, 2008 at 5:31 AM

They aired pics of Palin’s High School REPORT CARDS on the “news”, yet couldn’t find the time to find out what Obama did at Columbia with Ayers and Said. Lunatic Leftist Radical Thesis? What Thesis? but PALIN GOT A “b” IN GYM!!!

marklmail on November 12, 2008 at 6:33 AM

That’s why I don’t watch Shep anymore

grapeknutz on November 12, 2008 at 6:45 AM

Shep has gone to la la land if he thinks that the MSM wasn’t in the tank for Obama and if he thinks that the MSM isn’t responsible for Obama’s win. The sheeple in this country didn’t know anything about Obama because only a few in talk radio bothered to ask and questions. Shep’s an idiot.

orlandocajun on November 12, 2008 at 6:47 AM

Just when you thought Sheppard Smith couldn’t be more of an out-of-touch imbecile, a new day dawns.

Alalazoo on November 12, 2008 at 6:52 AM

Glen Beck should replace this guy. I would watch fox again if that happened.

goldeagle11 on November 11, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Amen brother.

Fuquay Steve on November 12, 2008 at 6:58 AM

This is why I don’t watch FNC any more.

Shep is an idiot – he can’t even read his teleprompter like his LEADER -the great ONE- can.

stenwin77 on November 12, 2008 at 7:04 AM

And how f-ing dare anyone out there make fun of Sheppard after all she’s been through! She loves Obama. She’s been through two f-ing elections! She’s a human! All you people want is more, more, more. Leave her alone *sob*, you’re lucky she even performed for you bastards! Leave Sheppard alone! PLEASE! Leave her alone! *sob* Leave Sheppard Smith alone. Leave her alone *sob* I mean it. Anyone who has a problem with her, you deal with me. She’s not well right now! BOO HOO HOO HOO *sniff* Leave her alone!

Laura in Maryland on November 11, 2008 at 11:37 PM

I see what you did there… And frankly, I’m upset. I just spewed coffee on my keyboard laughing… Thanks a lot for the mess *sob*. Just leave my keyboard alone!! lol

As for Shep… I think he and Chris Matthews need to get room and share a tingle.

Passed on November 12, 2008 at 7:05 AM

Glenn Beck should replace this guy.

goldeagle11 on November 11, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Yup, Glenn would be a big improvement. Heck, Shep could have another time slot… say, the one after Red Eye.

petefrt on November 12, 2008 at 7:15 AM

Wow!

Shep went a bit heavy on the guest there.

Problem,

The guest was correct, the MSM helped Obama win, but it could be clarified a bit.

The majority of the news media’s “journalists,” and the bulk of the News Media outlets, and the bulk of the news and editorials, are favorable to Barrack Obama, and negative toward both John McCain and Sarah Palin.

The fact that Shep attempts to whitewash that fact, that event, does nothing to obscure that fact from many of us.

William2006 on November 12, 2008 at 7:18 AM

Smith is an arrogant, narcissistic, loud mouth buffoon and when he appears I turn the channel.

rplat on November 12, 2008 at 7:18 AM

Shep’s an empty suit with a teleprompter. Hmmm.. sounds familiar.

redfoxbluestate on November 12, 2008 at 7:21 AM

Tap, Tap, Tap!

Is this thing on?

Lost a post…

Mark Garnett on November 12, 2008 at 7:28 AM

Shep comes out of the closet (no pun intended).

kevinkristy on November 12, 2008 at 7:29 AM

Shepard Smith demonstrated his IGNORANCE during Katrina when he joined the blame Republicans crowd while ignoring the incompetent Democrat Mayor & Govenor along with the history of Democrat control of Louisiana since the end of the Civil War’s Reconstruction Era.

Max47 on November 12, 2008 at 7:31 AM

I can’t believe that came out of his mouth! I agree with an earlier comment…..Glenn Beck should take this clowns job! To bad he just got his contract renewed for millions of dollars!
